Introducing Om Shanti Om
A movie review by a major Bollywood website was extremely positive. Oh well, how could I trust a reviewer who gave fantastic movies like Chak De India, Black, Rang De Basanti (and so many more) such low ratings? I believed the reviewer is quite fond of masala flicks, flicks which have major box-office appeal. (Are movie reviewers actually paid for positive reviews? I wonder..) So before I entered the movieplex, I had huge expectations from Om Shanti Om. The biggest entertainer in the country in a masala potboiler, positive reviews, great hype, 31 of the biggest stars in one item number – what more could one ask for?
Om Shanti Om Story
Om Prakash Makhija (Shahrukh Khan) is a junior artist aspiring to become a superstar one day and live life of luxury and comfort. He is a die hard fan and a secret lover of popular actress Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). His mother and Papu (Shreyas Talpade) are the only true believers of his talent. A fire accident on one of the shooting sets introduces Shanti to Om. As Om finds happiness and satisfaction he finds out an untold truth of Shanti being married to film producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal) who kills her after she admits her pregnancy to him. As a witness to this crime, Om gets killed in a fight with Mehra’s men.
Om Prakash comes back to the world now as Om Kapoor, a star-kid. Om Kapoor is all set to take revenge on Mehra for killing his love Shanti. He plans a conspiracy with Shanti’s clone Sandy, his mother and friend Papu to make Mehra (who is now a big producer in Hollywood) confess about his deadly crime. Will the purpose of Om’s rebirth be fulfilled? Will Mukesh Mehra confess his crime? Whats the future of Om and Sandy?
Om Shanti Om Review
Technically Om Shanti Om is good, but as an entertainer, a major disappointment. The fact that it is such a terrible let down, is yet to sink in. What was Farah Khan (director) thinking? How could she make such a bad film, after directing a decent entertainer in Main Hoon Na? What was Shahrukh Khan thinking when he approved the script? How could almost everything go so wrong in a movie?
The movie has major flaws. Both the first half and the second have a lot of similarities, a few scenes actually are repeated! So if you miss the first half or you decide to walk out during the interval, dont worry, you haven’t missed much. The biggest flaw is you never feel for any of the characters, you laugh when the characters cry and vice versa. The transformation of Om Kapoor to Om Prakash in the second half, isnt handled well and is far from convincing. The transformation part is so very important in reincarnation movies, something which was handled brilliantly in Karan Arjun. The death scene, rebirth, flashbacks – needs expert direction, Farah unfortunately fails.
The script, screenplay and the direction is flawed. The dialogues are irritating. The only saving grace of the much hyped movie is the music. Main Agar Kahoon and Dard-e-Disco stand out.
Om Shanti Om Performances
Now the performance of the King Khan. After a career-best knockout performance in Chak De India, Shahrukh Khan hams in the first half. In the second half, as the new-age superstar, he fails to convince. A soda without fizz kinda performance by SRK. Personally for me, this is undoubtedly his most disappointing performance this decade. Deepika Padukone is promising in her debut, great screen presence. She expresses quite well through her eyes. Definitely a actress to look forward to, in the future. Shreyas Talpade’s role doesnt demand any histrionics, he is decent as the side-kick. Arjun Rampal is good in a negative role. Kirron Kher is over the top throughout, the only scene she excels is when she is supposed to scare Mukesh Mehra, in the second half.
In the special appearances, Akshay Kumar stands out in the filmfare awards scene. Even his nomination video is hilarious. He gets the house down with his typical trademark antics. Hrithik Roshan is also a part of the movie and so is Abhishek Bachchan (both are part of the Filmfare scene). Amongst the 31 stars in the item number, Kajol got the loudest of cheers.
IndiCine Om Shanti Om Verdict
Overall, another biggie that disappoints big time this year. I would be surprised if, die-hard SRK fans enjoy this. The only reason to watch it could be the technical brilliance!
So If Chak De India got 5 on 5 stars, this one deserves not a bit more than 1.

OSO has really evoked xtreme reactions. people either hate it or love it. first of all i hate masala movies. only went to see deepika as i had no xpectations from farah but OSO IS A REVELATION. a lot of thought has gone into its making. it is a fitting tribute to bollywood. everything that we so loved or hated in b’wood is there. since decades the whole nation used to love watching the filmy dialogue delivery, the over emotional mothers, the theatrical facial xpressions, double roles etc. we have grown up watching those cliches. we have also grown out of them. oso is an amalgamation of all that and more. that might have put off many viewers. they cud’nt make out any sense as to what was going on in the movie what with stars or star lookalikes appearing and disappearing regularly. but seriously u need to look at it from a different perspective.it is not your regular boy meets girl love story which everyone can easily relate to or understand. it seems many have not been able to catch up with the director’s vision. oso is a tribute to everything that b’wood represents and a lovely one at that. it has portrayed b’wood in a colorful way and at the same time it does not pretent to b a smart observer from outside(ala page3). it is very much a part of the masala genre it so beautifully shows.there are no pretentions. it is a true blue mass entertainer. technically and visually it is brilliant. srk is ordinary, deepika is lovely,direction is imaginative, script is thoughtful,editing is xcellent. but the latter part and the ending have some flaws. were it not 4 that it wud have been the perfect masala entertainer. so Sholay still wears that crown. but i dont believe that farah and team went on a shopping spree and bought all the big film critics. i agree with all the renowned critics(who know a thing or two about evaluating movies) of well known publications and channels who obviously saw it in the correct light and gave credit where its due. OSO LIVES UP TO THE HYPE and deserves all the success thats come its way. (comments r welcome but they shud make sense)
dil chahta hai, rang de basanti, company,roja, etc are ofcourse superior but they belong to a different genre. OSO, 4 all its flaws, is still one of the better movies and is a welcome addition to b’wood masala types. And oh the music too is gr8.

however why r the srk fans so obssesed with him??? c’mon his acting was nothing to write about. arjun rampal and deepika were the notable performers. farah erred in the final scenes but she’s come a long way since ‘main hu naa’

Its a great movie, deepikas a good actress, and im not being rude or nothin, but indicine team, your a bit harsh to the movie. i mean f*ckin chill out. its a movie. (a great one too)

Movie accha tha. Not a top class though. Watch it for some relaxation for fun time. And let ShahRukh do some work with difference guys. If he played serious role in Chak De he proved his brilliance in comedy. Though the movie would have been much better if it had found a better comedy director.
And for those anti SRK s, Please don’t watch the movie because BOSS pe Buri Nazar pad jati hai. Its safe for him if u guys avoid the movie.

only king kong and godzilla can sit through the film…you have to be a mutant to like the film
all those who think oso is a good movie,please do make it a point to watch madhumati(atleast a 1000 times better than oso),Shah rukh khan(no doubt one of the finest actors) has ended making mockery of himself trying too many things,as for entertainment none of the jokes made me laugh and shah rukh khan has definitely given one of his worst performances.The script trying to include too many things was completely flawed.As for direction,i have no words,i was sometimes reminded of my school day skits while watching the film.My advice-do watch Madhumati if you really want to watch a movie based on reincarnation(a classic,will keep you glued till the end,stunning performances by both the leads,the entire second half of oso was nothing but madhumati enacted by school kids,sorry srk),and if u are looking for entertainment,there are so many comedies around,so why oso?Lastly ,classics will always remain classics,please leave them alone,come up with something new!

anyway, i thought this movie was actually really good. because it tageted all types of audiences, the first part, parents would have loved, and the second, is good for all. :d and the story was good too, like if you compare it with all these movies these days, the story was very diffrent and good for people who are tired of watching indians strip on the big screen. and for deepika, being new to acting, i think she did pretty good. so over all, i give this movie a 8 out of 10.

I APPLAUD YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR SPEAKING OUT THE TRUTH. SOMEONE HAD TO DO IT! AM I SURPRISED THAT THE MOVIE IS A BIG HIT? NOT REALLY…………. SINCE THAT’S HOW IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN, SRK JUST NEEDS TO BE IN THE MOVIE, THAT’S ALL IS REQUIRED FOR IT TO BE A HIT!!!!I HOPE MANY WILL AGREE!
OSO COULD HAVE BEEN A HUGE ENTERTAINER BACK IN THE 70S OR 80S, BUT TODAY, WITH SO MANY INTELLIGENT AND ENTERTAINING MOVIES OUT THERE, I AM SURPRISED THAT FARAH KHAN COULD TAKE THE RISK OF MAKING A MOVIE ON THE CLICHE SUBJECT OF REINCARNATION AND THEN NOT MANAGE IT WELL.

Om shanti om rocked .. the person who wrote the review has totally lost his mind or has no taste . the movie had everything ( romance ,triller, action and much more) .Loved it ! And i assure you that you will love the movie … Go and watch the movie i assure you that you’ll love it !!
I totally agree with this review, OSO isn’t a good movie, I didn’t like it as it was weak in direction and felt sorry for the King Khan that he signed the script and did this movie!!!
Mehona was much better in direction – although I didn’t like the action scenes in Mehona – but the direction was good and was a better entrtainer movie.
OSO songs not bad, Deewanegi Deewanegi was the best part in the movie, and I think if SRK wasn’t the hero of this movie and it didn’t have this scene of 34 or less fillm stars, the movie would have been the biggest flop of the year. And I don’t understand how people enjoyed a 3 hours boring movie and considered it as a big entertaining and Saawariya which was excellent, outstanding, and a very interesting movie considered as a sleeping pill?!!! Saawariya is the best of SLB’s movie , I saw it 3 times and didn’t get enough of it and still want to see it again and again.
SRK deserves a better movie, and would consider (Chakde India) as his best in this year.

The Om Shanti Om movie is crap like 90% of the Bollywood movies. Giving this movie a bad review is like comparing a typical cheap Indian buffet with a fine cuisine. The movie has all the ingredients of an oily stale $8.99 buffet. It is what it is, a typical Bollywood film.
I like shahrukh khan in his long hairs and 6 pack abs! this films rating is 10 out of 10 (10/10) meaning 100%! i really like this film, for the first time i have seen a completely different movie. This film is very fun to watch in the cinema, the songs are great and fun, my favourite song is deewangi deewangi, ajab si, darde disco and jag soona soona lage. this is the best shahrukh khans and farah khans film i have ever seen. if the rating was out of 100, i would give it 100 out of 100 (100/100).

OSO may be disappointing to a few with respect to the actors’ performances, makeup (especially for the “old” characters, etc, but the movie was downright entertaining! Top class music and a great story line. Farah did a fantastic job when visualising and encorporating the “past” bollywood into the movie…truly a tribute to those actors & actresses of yester-year! Wish Kajol could have gotten a longer screen time though. Couldn’t she have been the one to introduce the Deewangi song instead of Rani? And SRK was his usual typical self on screen which for certain is what we love about him! Can’t wait for KJo’s KHAN to be released…it’s about time for us Kajol-SRK fans to see them together again!
Although I’m a big fan of Shahrukh Khan, I watch all his movies, but I didn’t like this one, didn’t like the direction of the movie, this 3 hours boring movie people found it interesting!! funny!! amazing!!
SRK deserves better movies
OM SHANTI OM is the wholesome entertainer I have seen after a long time because there was no single movie made after MAIN HOON NAA also directed by Farah Khan who has directed OSO and MAIN HOON NAA was Farah’s first movie as a director which could provide us with everything-romance,action,drama,comedy,good music especially SRK’s six pack abs song ‘Dard-E-Disco’which became a hype for the public few months ago of the release of OSO.SRK excels in his role of Om Prakash Makhija but does a fantastic job as Om Kapoor or OK.Deepika Padukone looks beautiful in the role of Shantipriya but is very funny and confident in the role of Sandhya or Sandy.Arjun is looking very handsome and good in his villainious role of Mukesh Mehra or Mike just like Sunil Shetty was in MAIN HOON NAA and Arjun deserves the best actor in a negative role award in the all the award functions this year.Shreyas is rocking as Pappu.Kirron is rocking in her overacting mother role of Bela.The music is good for hearing for both young and old generation especially Dard-e-Disco.The whole crew has done a good job.Farah has proved it yet again that she is the only one who can make commercial masala films after MAIN HOON NAA and OSO.
The story:-
Om Prakash Makhija is a junior artiste in the Hindi movies of 70s.He loves the superstar Shantipriya.His mother Bela always overeacts which Om hates very much and his mother refusing his surname to be changed from Makhija to something else bcoz his best friend Pappu Master advices him to change his surname Makhija-shoo away filies.One day during shooting of Ma Bharti Mother India Shantipriya refuses to shoot until the producer of the movie Mukesh Mehra will come to meet her for some reason.After they both meet the shooting is started and just like in MOTHER INDIA Sunil Dutt jumped in the fire and saved Nargis Ricky Sandhu,an actor is told to jump into the fire to save Shantipriya but he refuses to do so so Om jumps in the fire to save Shantipriya risking his own life and they soon become friends.One day he invites Shantipriya to meet him.One day Om follows Shantipriya after a film shooting.Om hides in the store room which is near Shantipriya’s make up room.He listens to the conversation between Mukesh and Shantipriya where it is revealed that she and Mukesh are married for last 2 years and Shantipriya is pregnant.Mukesh decides that he’ll get married to Harsh Mittal’s daugther to get Mittal studios as a wedding gift and make Om Shanti Om.Om feels he is been betrayed by Shantipriya so he begins to avoid her.One day he notices Mukesh bringing Shanti to the sets of Om Shanti Om-the biggest film ever made in India but he reveals that there will be no shooting of Om Shanti Om and the set will be dismantled but before that Mukesh and Shantipriya will get married in front of everybody but afterwards he reveals his real plans and he decides to burn the whole set along with Shantipriya.Om tries to save her but is beaten by Mukesh’s guards.Somehow he manages to enter the set to save Shantipriya but due to a cylinder blast he is thrown out of the set and is hit Rajesh Kapoor,the ‘king of romance’ of 70s’s car.Rajesh takes Om and his wife Lovely to the hospital because she is pregnant.Rajesh gets a song but Om dies.30 years later Om is again born as Om Kapoor or OK,the star of 2007 and son of Rajesh but Rajesh is unaware of the fact that the person who died 30 years ago after being hit by his car was his son OK who was Om Prakash Makhija 30 years ago.One day he is offered a script of being a deaf,dumb,blind and handicapped person in a film but agrees only if an item song-Dard-e-Disco is added in the film.One day Om along with his secretary Anwar goes to RC studios which is totally burned for a film shooting of a superhero-Mohabbat Man whose real identity is Mongesh Da.He starts remembering some of the things of his past.He does the shooting but due to the rain he has enter the building where the starts make up rooms were.He enter Shantipriya’s make up room where he sees the conversation between Mukesh and Shantipriya where he sees Om Prakash Makhija and gets shocked.He gets the best actor in the FILMFARE awards after which he throws a party where 31 actors from the Bollywood attend it and dance on the song-Deewangi Deewangi.He meets Mukesh who has now became Mike who made movies in Hollywood for last 25 years after marrying Harsh Mittal’s daughter.OK tells Mike to remake Om Shanti Om which he decided not to make 30 years ago due to Shantipriya.Mike agrees and goes to America for a month so that OK can select the heroine for OSO.OK meets Sandy,who resembles Shantipriya and decides to use her to scare Mike so that he can reveal the whole truth.Mike starts liking the heroine of the film OSO-Dolly.One day during a song Mike follows Sandy and when he sees that blood is flowing out from Sandy’s hand after her hand knocked a candle down on her hand.A chandelier comes down and hits him.When Mike gets up OK tells the things which Mike told Shantipriya when they were alone and OK reveals that that night when Shantipriya was burned alive OK as Om Prakash Makhija also died.Mike tells that OK tried to fool Mike by making Sandy as Shantipriya to make Mike assume that Shantipriya is back.A girl comes there and says that he came that night after the fire had extinguished to bury Shantipriya alive under the chandelier.Mike tries to shoot her but is stopped by OK and a fight happens between them.Mukesh takes a object and tries to kill the girl but OK shoots a bullet at Mike’s right leg due to which he falls down.The chandelier comes down over Mike followed by his death.Sandy comes there along with Pappu and Anwar.Ok realises that it was Shantipriya’s ghost who burned the photograph of Shantipriya during the muhurat of OSO and used the chandelier to hit Mike after the song Dastaan-e-Om Shanti Om.Shantipriya’s ghost goes away and everything becomes alright.The movie is exceptionally good and a well made movie by Farah Khan.I give it *****=5 stars.
