Box Office Predictions of 2015 Bollywood Movies: Part 1

We all know box office is extremely unpredictable, but it’s always fun to predict the lifetime collections of films at the very beginning of a year. In fact, we got quite a few films right last year. Below, we have the box office predictions of 12 Bollywood films that are scheduled to release in 2015.

Note: Predictions are based on trade expectations, star cast and genre of the film.

Tevar (50-55 cr): Arjun Kapoor had a good 2014 with two of his films doing good business – Gunday and 2 States. So when he pairs up with Sonakshi Sinha for the first time in Tevar, expectations are automatically raised. But it is the first big release of the year and typically the first or second week of the year isn’t very fruitful for Hindi films. Also, PK will continue to remain strong in Week 4. We expect it to do average business of around 50-55 crore but Tevar has the potential to surprise us all.

Baby (80-85 cr): Akshay Kumar’s Baby will be arriving with a lot of buzz. The trailer has been very well received but it doesn’t have any songs to boast of and it will also be clashing with Dolly Ki Doli on Republic Day weekend. However, the initial buzz has died down in the last couple of weeks as the trailer was released way too early. Ideally, the makers should have released the trailer with PK. We expect it to better the business done by Special 26 two years ago, but the 100 crore mark could be out of reach, unless the content is extra-ordinary.

Shamitabh (40-45 cr): Amitabh Bachchan and R Balki team up once again in this film. Dhanush stars in his second Hindi film and Kamal Hassaan’s younger daughter Akshara Hassaan makes her debut in Shamitabh. Going by the premise, we expect the film to be liked and the performances of both Dhanush and Amitabh will be appreciated.

Roy (55-60 cr): Roy arrives on the coveted Valentine’s Day weekend. It stars Ranbir Kapoor in an extended guest appearance and the publicity of the film will be centered around Ranbir which will guarantee it a better than normal opening. The music also seems very strong from the promos which will add to the opening.

Box Office Prediction 2015

Gabbar (80-85 cr): Akshay Kumar returns to the masala genre where he hasn’t had much success off late. Gabbar is the remake of a very well received South Indian film and it enjoys that advantage. However, it is not likely to be a solo release and that will take a few crore out of the opening. The title is very good and can redeem the film’s opening. 100 crore seems like a tough task but if the content clicks, who knows?

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (50-55 cr): Sushant Singh Rajput has worked extremely hard for playing the Bengali Super Sleuth Byomkesh Bakshy from the news trickling out of the YRF headquarters. Dibakar Banerjee is one of the best directors we have, and Byomkesh Bakshy seems to be one of his more commercial endeavours. The film could get a lot of critical plaudits which will marginally improve the box office collections.

Piku (60-65 cr): Piku stars Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan. The star cast is a heavy one and the film is directed by the magnificent Shoojit Sircar (Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe). Piku is supposed to be a heartwarming father-daughter story and if the film and the story are accepted, then nothing can stop Piku from going on a long run at the box office. We expect a good film out of Piku and if it turns out to be good, box office collections will automatically follow.

Phantom (80-85 cr): Saif Ali Khan teams up with Kabir Khan in an action thriller, also starring Katrina Kaif. After a disappointing 2014, Phantom should prove to be a saving grace for Saif and thankfully, the film has fairly good reports. Kabir Khan knows how to stylishly shoot his films and he can make his films looks grand. Phantom will get the multiplex audience in numbers.

Bombay Velvet (90-100 cr): Bombay Velvet is the riskiest film to predict in terms of its box office business. Anurag Kashyap is the king of indie cinema and Bombay Velvet is his film big budget film (and that too with a budget of 90 crore and more). We know the film is going to be fantastic but how well is it going to play with the general paying audience who watch movies just for casual entertainment? 100 crore seems like a steep task for BV but we are going to go with it nonetheless.

Welcome Back (70-75 cr): Welcome Back is the sequel of a highly successful comedy film like Welcome but it arrives 8 years too late and the big stars of the original film Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif have not returned. Still, Welcome is one of the most well-liked comedy films on TV and the supporting cast is the same so there should be some curiosity in the public to see how it has turned out. We think it will make about the same money as the original film did.

Dil Dhadakne Do (90-95 cr): Dil Dhadakne Do is in the same vein as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, in the sense that ZNMD was a multiplex oriented film shot in exotic locales in Spain with a great ensemble cast. Dil Dhadakne Do is about a dysfunctional Punjabi film whereas ZNMD was about friendship. We expect Dil Dhadakne Do to be liked and hence the lofty box officer figures.

Humaari Adhuri Kahaani (70-75 cr): Music. We have heard great reports about the music of this film which is said to have one of the best soundtracks of 2015. Also, the film stars Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan and the talented Rajkumar Yadav. Mohit Suri has been on a great run lately and it should continue with Hamari Adhuri Kahaani. And, we know how well Vidya Balan and Kahaani go together!

Part 2 Box Office Predictions of Bollywood movies in 2015 will be published tomorrow. Since most biggies release in the second half of the year, all those films will be covered in tomorrow’s article. Stay tuned to Indicine!

  • It seems like Indicine has become little conservative this time around.

    2. Baby- 103 cr
    3. Shamitabh- 37 cr
    4. Roy- 53 cr
    5. Gabbar- 69 cr
    6. Byomkesh bakshi- 63 cr
    7. Piku- 55 cr
    8. Phantom- 60 cr
    9. Bombay velvet- 100 cr
    10. Welcome back- 90 cr
    11. Dil dhadakne do- 115 cr
    12. Hamari Adhuri kahani- 85

  • @indicine gabbar and Mr.X 3D are clashing according to insiders of industry. Can u plz confirm?
Mr.X 3D is invisible superhero film.I know it is directed by vikram bhatt who gave creature. But vikram has given good films in 1920 evil returns, Haunted. Plus vikram n emraan have a good track record. And Mr.X is risky film as these kind of films can go wrong which are of sci-fi fantasy genre.
    Mr.X 3D on 17th april.

  • hahaha indicine is predicting just 55cr avg business from tevar, byomkesh and just 100cr from bv while they r expecting 80cr from hamari adhuri kahani!!!

still can’t control my laughter.indicine has again played to the galleries thats y such horrible analysis where a flop emraan hasmis film is expected to bcm a big hit and films of arjun, sushanth r expected to fail!!!plus bv is a huge budget film.100cr will also mean a failure for the film while 80cr for an Emmy film is huge hit

    hahaha

  • seriously..RK,arjun rampal, jacquline starrer movie with good music ..and prediction just 50-55 crore.its a joke

  • humari adhuri kahani is story of mahesh sir n it is also period drama.Mr.X wil be dark horse of underrated emran.

  • Gabbar business might be affected as emraan hashmi ‘s superhero Mr.X clashes with it.Both films will eat each other business. But both will be superhit.

  • My prediction:

    Tevar: 55-60 crores
    Baby: 110-120 crores
    Shamitabh: 55 crores
    Roy: 90 crores
    Gabbar: 110 crores
    Bombey Velvet: 120 crores
    Dil Dhadkne Do: 120 crores
    Hamari Aduri Kahaani: 80 crores

  • am not agree with most of movies…specially with dil dhadkne do…humari adhuri kahaani and bombey vevlet…..
dil dhadkne do have hudge star cast….but the main thing is movie releasing on post ipl week…profitable release date after christmas…diwali…and eid…so atleast 130 crore is sure for this movie…and if the reports come as good as znmd…than it can definately go beyond 160 crore…
now come to humari adhuri kahaani…there’s a lot of buzz about this…mohit suri after aashiqui 2 and ek villain…with again awesome music…minimum 100 crore is on….
barfi combo again with bombey velvet…you can’t expect only 90-100 crore with this movie

  • Hahaha… Indicine .. 60cr for tevar.. 60cr will be 1st day business of tevar.haha..
Arjun son, don’t worry, i have sent fat payment to all critics . They will not bash your performance like they bashed you for your 3rd class performance in 2states,fanny,gunday.

  • @nipun I thought u were my friend and here u r also predicting a low 55cr for tevar!!!

good good, everybody has ganged up against this film but it will too much fun 9th jan onwards to see their disappointed faces when tevar will rock the bo and indicine like last year will again admit that another young actors film has ‘exceeded expectations’

  • Baby doesn’t have any song. I feel it’s a very good step. I hope Baby contains good BGM! Expecting a excellent movie from Neeraj Pandey. Collectionwise, it may not wonder.
I personally feel Special 26 was one of the Best 5 movies of 2013.

  • If dolly ki dolly maker change their release date than baby have a chance for touching 100 cr but now its tough task for baby now my prediction for baby opening will be around 10-12 cr and lifetime will be less than 80 cr because srk fans didn’t see the film because ajay and akshy attack on srk abs.
Prediction for dolly ki dolly 35 cr
    80+35=115

  • No comments as my predictions are pathetic. They fail always without a FAIL :P .

But @indicine : I think , “Welcome Back” and “Dil dhadakne Do” have an outside chance to cross 100 cr . If welcome back will be 60% as good as Welcome(Part 1), then 100 cr should be a cakewalk for it.

  • while it is been said that RK has just an extended guest appearance, some sources say that Ranbir actually has quite a meaty role, infact he is playing the title role in the movie.
Infact going by the glimpses we have seen in the movie, if fhe movie somehow manages a 30 cr. + weekend, it will eventually end up collecting above 80 cr. lifetime for sure.
Tevar does have a lot of scope, but the Big problem with the movie is its actress – ‘Sonakshi Sinha’, in the same type of role for the ‘nth’ time now, just sick watchinh her onscreen now.
Bombay Velvet will go the Barfi way .. atleast a 110 cr. + on cards for BV in any scenario.
Baby will end up anywhere between 70-80 cr.
Gabbar will end upp in Akki’s favourite numbers, between 60-70 cr.
Byomkesh will be a game changer for Sushanth, expect the movie’s collections to surprise everyone big time :)
Indcine’s predictions for Dil Dhadakne Do, Phantom, Humari Adhoori Kahani seem to spot on !!

  • 1. Tevar- 40 cr
    2. Baby- 75 cr ( 100+ crore if film as good as special 26)
    3. Shamitabh- 37 cr
    4. Roy- 70 cr
    5. Gabbar- 70 cr
    6. Byomkesh bakshi- 65 cr
    7. Piku- 75 cr( don’t know have feeling about this movie going to be extraordinary)
    8. Phantom- 75 cr
    9. Bombay velvet- 120 cr
    10. Welcome back- 70 cr( don’t expecting too much.
    11. Dil dhadakne do- 135 cr
    12. Hamari Adhuri kahani- 105 cr
    Adding more movies
    Hawaizada-45 cr
    Badlapur-50 cr

  • @kusH I agree with you but I have a little doubt about baby director and holiday director
Ghajini director >special 26 director in term of box office numbers .

  • facts for some movie in the list
tevar: though tever created huge buzz…but people already spend there money on pk…and they are waiting for baby…seems like tever will stuck around 40-50 cr
baby: thats a gud thing that it don’t have any music…i like this thing…bollywood going this way…last year mardaani this year baby…as well as great director as neeraj pandey…you can expect much more from this movie…but they release trailer too early…
roy: many people thinking ranbir has lead role in this movie…specially after video of tu hai ke nahi song which features ranbir not arjun kapoor….and also movie name is on ranbir’s name….and also music is looking good…this movie going on high on the numbers….
byomkesh bakshi: expecting too much from this movie….looks like indian sherlock is coming…..teaser is good too….this movie gonna surprise…
humari adhuri kahaani : mohit emraan combo after awarapan…murder 2..raaz 2…mohit is one of the finest and underrated director…and there’s always a thing…he comes up with a chartbuster music always….he can make two scenes on one dialogue…and as well as…mahesh said that this movie based on his life…expecting too much from this movie…

  • Roy will do business anywhere from ., 40-48 core

    Bombay velat will do 60-70cores

    Gabar will be 40

    Tever : 35-40 core

If these goes right I will consider myself better and true trade.

  • mohit suri was a talented director who gave some hits and some flops with emraan.

but the moment he did films with youngistaan he became a blockbuster director.

now he is back with emraan.so the question will hak recreate the magic of murder2 or bomb at the bo like awarapan and crook

  • @Indicine, not fair for BABY and Gabbar but i can’t blame you because it’s predictions only.
    My predictions;
    Baby 100cr
    Gabbar 100cr
    Badlapur 80cr
    Tever 75cr

  • so everyone here is expecting tevar to fail and earn 55cr lifetime.

BUT MY OPEN CHALLENGE TO ALL
    TEVAR WILL EARN 55CR IN IT’S WEEK1 and lifetime 90-100cr. verdict-hit/superhit

Remember,I rarely get my predictions wrong

  • my predictions
tevar – quite good buzz due to music nd genre 75 cr
alone- can well be surprise package of the year 45-50cr
dolly ki doli – clash could damage the film 30 cr
baby – has a great potential to collect 110-130 if the content is liked
shamitabh – has a good potential to collect in 60-70 cr region
roy – could go either way 50 cr
phantom – this may come out as good product 70-80 cr
gabbar – the tilte is mass appealing nd so is the genre 100-110 cr
hamari adhuri kahani – cant say much bt mohit suri can make it big 70 cr
welcome back – the sequel factor can may take it to 100 cr club
dul dhadakne do – a zoya akhtar film with good star cast nd if the content is good then it could go on to be highest grosser of first half
