Bollywood Biggest Grossers

With the boom of multiplexes, the life of films at theaters has reduced drastically. Gone are days when a film needed a silver jubilee (25 weeks) or a golden jubilee (50 weeks) to be considered a success. These days, most films are out of theaters in a week, yet recover their investment. Films that run longer though, go on to earn bucket loads of money and are termed money-spinners or blockbusters by the trade. Below is a list of 5 such films, which are Bollywood’s biggest grossers ever! (Figures include collections from both overseas and India)

Box office: My Name Is Khan vs 3 Idiots vs Veer vs Ghajini

My Name Is Khan has opened to a huge response in India, but SRK fans expecting the film to beat the opening weekend collections of 3 Idiots, would be disappointed. The film opened to a great response on Friday, but lost close to 2 – 3 crores due to a limited release in Maharastra and few others cities. Saturday saw an unexpected drop at single screens and again lost close to 1 crore in Maharastra. On Sunday, with a release all over, the collections were upto full potential, falling just short of beating the 13.5 crore nett of 3 Idiots. As promised, here is the weekend comparison between My Name Is Khan, Ghajini, 3 Idiots and Veer.

Salman Khan’s Wanted – Release date

Salman Khan’s much anticipated Wanted : Dead and Alive, a remake of the Tamil blockbuster Pokiri,  was all set to release on July 3rd this year. But unfortunately due to the Producers – Multiplex owners strike, the release was postponed indefinitely. The release date was announced soon after the strike ended and the film is all set to release on 18th September 2009. Prabhu Deva who also directed the Tamil film makes his Bollywood debut as a director. Interestingly, Salman’s character name (Radhe) in the film is similar to Tere Naam (Radhe Mohan). In Wanted, he plays the role of a hardcore gangster!
