Kismat Konnection Movie Review

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Kismat Konnection, as the title says is all about Kismat. The movie marks the return of veteran director Aziz Mirza (Yes Boss, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Chalte Chalte, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani). The one common feature in every Aziz Mirza film has been Shahrukh Khan but for the role of Raj Malhotra in Kismat Konnection, Aziz wanted someone about 15 years younger to SRK. Shahid Kapoor was roped in; Vidya Balan was signed opposite Shahid. There was a lot of curiosity around the lead pair, for most believed Vidya looked much older to Shahid. So does their chemistry work? Is Aziz Mirza in form after a long break from direction? Is Kismat Konnection worth a watch? >> More <<

Kahani Hamare Mahabharat Ki Review

Kahani Hamaray Mahabharat

This is not a movie review but the review of a television serial on the epic Mahabharat by Ekta Kapoor.

I was eagerly looking foward to Ekta Kapoor’s version of Mahabharath titled Kahani Hamare Mahabharat Ki, so much so that I even paid for an add-on package from Tata Sky just to catch Mahabharat every night from Monday to Thursday. Was expecting something not just bigger than the previous Mahabharat by B.R. Chopra, but a better product overall. Very high expectations, i know! >> More <<

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Movie Review

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na marks the acting debut of Aamir Khan’s nephew Imraan Khan. Abbas Tyrewala of Munnabhai M.B.B.S and Main Hoon Na fame (as a writer) has scripted and directed this fun flick mainly targetted at the youth. This is also the first movie from Aamir Khan productions to not feature the superstar himself. But any product that Aamir lends his name to, is keenly anticipated and be rest assured, high on quality. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is no exception! >> More <<

Love Story 2050 Movie Review

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Harman Baweja finally makes his much-awaited debut in a lavish 50 - 55 crore movie titled Love Story 2050! Directed by Harry Baweja, his father, of Qayamat fame (the Ajay Devgan movie that released in 2003). Since Qayamat, Harry has been busy working on Love Story 2050, his son’s mega debut. Priyanka Chopra is Harman’s co-star in the movie. Expectations are high, mostly due to the high-on-special-effects trailers and good promotion. Does it click? >> More <<

Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic Movie Review

Friday, June 27th, 2008

The only trailer of Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic that created some sort of a buzz around the movie was the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ trailer featuring Amisha Patel in skimpy clothes. Yashraj in the last 2 years or so, have stopped promoting their movies as aggresively as they used to. And the result.. a slow start at the box-office. An average opening means, a lot depends on strong word of mouth, for which the movie has to connect with the audience. Last few movies of Yashraj Films, with the only exception being Chak De India, have failed miserably. Can the Saif Ali Khan - Rani Mukherjee starrer, directed by Kunal Kohli of Fanna and Hum Tum fame create magic? >> More <<

Mere Baap Pehle Aap Movie Review

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Going by the trailers, Mere Baap Pehle Aap looks exciting, an out-n-out comedy flick directed by Priyadarshan! The name Priyadarshan itself is reason enough to visit your nearest movieplex, and when the ace director combines with Paresh Rawal and Akshaye Khanna, the expectations rise further. Does Mere Baap Pehle Aap entertain? Lets find out.

Mere Baap Pehle Aap Story

The movie is about Janardhan Vishvanbhar Rane (Paresh Rawal), who has spent his entire life in the upbringing of his two children, Gaurav (Akshaye Khanna) and Chirag (Manoj Joshi). Gaurav, now grown up, takes care of his father, like a father! He shouts, screams, orders and even threatens his baap (father) but all in love. The father and son duo manage the business as well as the household chores. Janardhan is good friends with Madhav (Om Puri), who is almost desperate to get married, but Gaurav is dead against their friendship. The reason being, Janardhan and Madhav are forever on look out for a bride and almost always land themselves in trouble, Gaurav has to bail them out and face the embarrassment.

One day, Gaurav stars receiving calls from a girl named Rose, who claims to be his classmate. Rose is in real Shikha (Genelia D’Souza) and she is just playing a prank with Gaurav, Shikha accepts the prank and they become friends. Shikha lives with her Teacher Anuradha (Shobhana). The moment Janardhan sees Anuradha, his life changes forever. What happens next forms the rest of the tale.

Mere Baap Pehle Aap Review

Before I entered the movie-plex to watch Mere Baap Pehle Aap, I was literally hoping Mere Baap to be an out an out comedy movie. Priyadarshan has made it a habit to make movies with a hilarious first half, but a utterly disappointing emotional and dramatic second. Unfortunately, Mere Baap Pehle Aap is no exception.

The movie starts off great, the first half although it tends to drag extensively just before the interval, is hilarious. Some scenes like the scene between Akshaye Khanna and Rajpal Yadav is extremely funny, but atleast 15 mins from the first half should have been chopped off from the final print. The second half, takes a dramatic turn, its emotional but doesnt make any impact. But the biggest problem is, the second half completely lacks comedy. There is not a single scene in the half that makes you laugh. The post interval portions drag endlessly and severely tests your patience. The run time of Mere Baap Pehle Aap is an unacceptable 2 hours and 50 mins. The movie should have ended 20 mins before it actually did, its hard to sit through the climax. Vidyasagar’s music is strictly okay. The cinematography is great, Kerala has been captured beautifully.

Coming to the performances, Akshaye Khanna is consistent throughout. Paresh Rawal has a meaty role and does a good job, nothing exceptional. Genelia D’Souza looks very sweet and her extremely expressive face and eyes are superb. She makes a lasting impact, you carry her performance even after the credits roll. Om Puri is funny. Rajpal Yadav is great but non-existent in the second half. Shobhana, a great actress has very few dialogues and no scope for histrionics. Archana Puran Singh is decent. Naseeruddin Shah in a special appearance, is okay.

In short, except for a few scenes, Mere Baap Pehle Aap disappoints. It has its moments but not enough to warrant a trip to the theatres. At the all important box-offfice, with a average start at the ticket window, the next few days should seal the fate of Priyadarshan’s latest offering.

Avoid!

Sarkar Raj Movie Review

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Sarkar Raj is widely believed to be the make or break film for Ram Gopal Varma, director of the epic disaster Aag (remake of Sholay). But one must not forget the unforgettable classics like Satya, Company, Rangeela and Sarkar that RGV has delivered over the years. Back to Sarkar Raj, the expectations are high for several reasons.

  • The Bachchans - Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya - share screen space for the first time since the much celebrated Ash - Abhishek wedding last year.
  • Sequel to the 2005 blockbuster Sarkar, which was critically acclaimed too.
  • Ram Gopal Varma is a master in this genre.

So does Sarkar Raj manage to live upto expections? >> More <<

Jannat Movie Review

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Jannat is yet another offering from the Bhatt’s camp that boasts to be a cricket centric film. But mind you, the movie just gives you a superficial idea of match fixing and cricket betting and does not reveal the operations in detail. In simple, it just tells you something you already know.

Directed by debutant director Kunal Deshmukh and produced by Vishesh Films ‘Jannat’ stars Emraan Hashmi and marks the debut of Sonal Chauhan, the female lead of the film. Also, Vishesh Bhatt kicks starts his career as a screenplay writer with ‘Jannat’. Does the movie succeed in entertaining the audience?

Jimmy Movie Review

Jimmy marks the debut of a star-kid Mimoh Chakraborty son of yesteryear superstar and extremely talented actor Mithun Chakraborty. Directed by Raj Sippy (Satte Pe Satta, Inkaar) Jimmy also stars Vivana, Zulfi Syed and Rahul Dev. Is Mimoh even half as talented as his father? >> More <<

Bhoothnath Movie Review

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Bhoothnath directed by Vivek Sharma stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aman Siddiqui, Juhi Chawla, Rajpal Yadav, Satish Shah, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Shahrukh Khan. Some good news for Shahrukh Khan fans. SRK has a good 30 mins long role in Bhoothnath! The movie is targeted mainly at the kids, so how good is it? Is there something in it for the older generation as well? Or is it an out-an-out kiddo movie? >> More <<
