Indian Box Office Verdicts

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Indian Box office verdicts are usually confusing. A few movies are called Blockbusters by the media even though they are just Semi-hit to Hit. A few movies which go into overflow are termed Flops.

Also many of you might have wondered on what basis a verdict is given out on a movie. How does the trade define a movie as a Hit, Flop, Superhit, Blockbuster. Hopefully this article will clear all your doubts. >> More <<

Economics of a Shahrukh Khan Film

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

ShahrukhAn article from Film Information. Currently SRK is indeed the Undisputed King of Bollywood.

It pays to be a Shah Rukh Khan, more today than ever before! Why? Because ShahRukh as actor-producer is minting money like nobody else! On a very realistic estimate, Shah Rukh’s home production, Om Shanti Om, starring himself must have cost Rs. 35 crore to make. Now to the revenues: >> More <<

Apne, Awaarapan and Aap Ka Surroor

Monday, July 9th, 2007

From IBOSNetwork

Much as the trade circles were going gaga over collections of 3 releases last week, none of them actually did the kind of opening business even many of the acclaimed flop films this past year have done. Aap Ka Surror was surprising to the extent it opened well in some C centers. Apne and Awaarapan on the other hand, despite being big budget starrers fetched very poor opening collections. The 21 crore Apne for example netted only 1.49 crores in Mumbai on 67 prints where big films open typically in the vicinity of 4 crores; and 17 lakhs in Gurgaon, East Punjab up north; which is again well below average; and tellingly a 1.7 lakh fare in Allahabad, UP which is again subpar for the Hindi belt center. The film is a washout in the south. It should be mentioned the 2nd weekend is relatively steadier in some centers; but it is steadier on the lower side.

Awarapan is a complete washout all over. Aap Ka Suroor too has come down after its surprising weekend. However as it is only a 4 crore budgeted film, it’s an earner commercially.

My friend Ganesha and Bombay to Goa have had modest openings in limited releases

Sivaji continues a phenomenal run even in limited release in the northern centers. In Bombay, it is drawing 60% despite being in 4th weekend. It had collected over Rs. 25 lakhs on nearly full houses opening week there. It has done very well in Delhi and Calcutta also, first for a south Indian film. It has been released in Baroda this week.

From Box Office India

Journey Bombay To Goa and My Friend Ganesha - Both films opened to a poor response of 20% and will find it tough to score at the box office.

Aap Kaa Surroor - Did very well in first week. Extraordinary at places. The film started giving overflow all over after just 3 days. It did start to drop midweek but should emerge Hit/Semi Hit in most circuits. Prints have been added in week two. First week business is approx 10 crore. (Note - Could possibly be a typo here, IBOS has reported the first weeb of Aap Kaa Surroor as 23 crores)

Apne - The film did well in the North India. Record breaking in East Punjab, good in Delhi/UP and Rajasthan. But other circuits saw just fair business but it has chances in these circuits as 8th day is rock steady all over. First week business is approx 13 crore.

Awarapan - The first week business was not encouraging. It did approx 5 crore in week one.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom - Crashes further all over. FLOP

So there you go. Aap Ka Surroor is a big hit while Apne has worked big time in the north and is steady all over. Awaarapan is below average. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is the biggest disaster and disappointment of the year.

Hilarious Box Office Analysis by Ibosnetwork on Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. They seem to be pretty biased towards the Bachchans.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom1. Underwhelming title and a flaky plot sitting on a central premise not easily digestible

2. Casting Bobby Deol in a bigger role than was warranted for the film’s benefit. He is comptetent in double role, but competence is not the same as natural charisma. The first half footage of Deol and Preity Zinta was not well received at all. His screentime should have been only in 2nd half and no more than 20-25 minutes. Shaad Ali made the same mistake as Mani Ratnam in Yuva which he only corrected in Guru. You have to let Abhishek Bachchan carry the show.

3. Abhishek Bachchan can carry a film now but he still hinders some of his own key scenes by holding heroines and doing film-ending kissing scenes awkwardly. >> More <<

Response to Aap Ka Surroor

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Aap Ka Surroor could end up as the biggest grosser of 2007 so far. The opening is on par with blockbusters like Dhoom 2 and Krrish. The opening is also bigger than Abhishek Bachchans Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
Indicine.com

The opening response is mindblowing. It has surpassed Dhoom-2 & Krrish! It is like the response to Rajnikant starrer Sivaji-The Boss, with the big difference that Rajnikant is the superstar of the South & Himesh is only a debutant actor

Critics dutry is to criticise, but it’s the Janta Janardhan that has the final say, and they have declared Aap Kaa Surroor as a >> More <<

Bheja Fry - First superhit of 2007

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Bheja Fry had opened quite well at Rs 2 crores and is still doing extraordinarily well at multiplexes. This 50 lakhs film might well do business of over 8 crores.

2007 has so far seen two bona fide all-India successes - GURU and NAMASTE LONDON. Now add on BHEJA FRY to the list.

Released at select cinemas 2 weeks back, the film has shown an improvement over its first week collections with cities like Mumbai and Delhi showing a jump from Week 1 to Week 2. >> More <<

In the UK, Salaam-e-Ishq’s opening is the 9th best ever. The magic numbers are an extraordinary ?294,000 with the screen average of a thunderous ?6,000. It has surpassed several biggies including Lage Raho Munnabhai, Paheli, Rang De Basanti, Baabul, & Bhagam Bhag.

The USA opening was perhaps the biggest surprise. The opening is the 4th best ever, behind Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Dhoom 2. The figures are an earth-shattering $1.01 million for a ground-breaking screen average of $11,700.

In Australia, the film’s opening is better than every single movie out there except Dhoom 2 & Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Thats right. Salaam-E-Ishq had the 3rd biggest opening ever for a Bollywood film in Australia. It had an extended release because it opened on Thursday instead of Friday. The film’s opening is an unbelievable $162,000. What magnifies the historic opening everywhere is that the films contains no bankable star except Salman Khan.

In India, the film’s occupancy on Thursday was just 50%, which is poor for a film of its calibre. The reason, unawareness of an early release. On Friday, occupancy was an excellent 90%+ all over, which is quite rare nowadays. Although reports are mixed, the superb initial and wide release will ensure a fantastic first week gross and quick recovery in several circuits.

Salaam-E-Ishq’s Overseas Weekend Gross (In Rupees) : 2.55 crores (UK) + 4.46 crores (USA) + 0.55 crores (Australia) = Rs 7.56 crores

Guru - The MovieUnited Kingdom (UK) : The film has collected ?80,400 (Rs 66,00,000) from Monday to Thursday. The total - ?237,400 (Rs 1,95,00,000) Verdict - Hit

United States of America (USA) : The film has collected $241,000 (Rs 1,10,00,000) from Monday to Thursday. The total - $1.00 million (Rs 4,60,00,000) Verdict - Blockbuster

Australia: The film has collected $47,135 from Monday to Thursday. The total - $145,000. Verdict - Superhit

India: After a slow start on Friday the film picked up well to record 90% collections at multiplexes in metroes on Saturday and Sunday. Monday recorded decent collections of 60%. As things stand today the film will earn in Mumbai and Mysore thanks to good business in Mumbai/Thane, Pune and Bangalore. Delhi/UP, West Bengal and Nizam should cover costs due to decent business in Delhi/NCR, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Collections on the 8th day were still 55-60% & the film has managed a fabulous 18 crores in the 1st week, mainly due to great business in multiplexes. The opening is 7th best ever. Mumbai alone contributed 9 crores. Verdict - Above Average to Hit

Box Office Update : Guru

Friday, January 19th, 2007

The movie got a splendid opening overseas (UK and USA), though it didnt start off well in India it is certainly picking up. It is breaking all records in the North India. The film is a big grosser in centers like Chandigarh, Punjab recording 90% collections even during the weekdays. It is doing extremely well in Mumbai. It is a hit in South India as well.
