Years when a megastar didnt have a release, like Salman in 2013

The working style of mega-stars has seen a significant change in the past 2 decades or so in the Hindi Film Industry. Big stars used to have multiple releases in a year and such a phenomenon was quite prominent during the 70s, 80s and to an extent even in the 90s. But due to wide expansion of global markets for Indian Cinema and the continuous inflow of big corporate investors, the pressure to deliver has grown manifold on the stake holders.

A big star is no longer just a Hindi Industry superstar but a ‘Brand’ that is expected to return profits for all its investors. Two decades back, stars could get away with even 5-6 consecutive flops but today even if a single movie fails to open well, the stardom of the ‘Brand’ becomes questionable. As a result, most major stars are opting for one or a maximum of two releases a year. The break from the big screen raises the curiosity level amongst the audience and hence increases the prospects of the movie at the ticket window.

Salman SRK Aamir Hrithik

Salman SRK Aamir Hrithik

2013 is going to be the first year without a superstar, who is arguably the biggest in the industry today. Ever since Salman Khan  made his debut with ‘Biwi Ho To Aisi’ in 1988, he has had a release every single year. For fans of the actor who will miss him on the big screen this year, Salman will be seen as a regular host of television reality show ‘Bigg Boss’ which will start from September 15. Apart from that, he will also be seen in cameos in movies like ‘Ishqk in Paris’ (already released) and ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero’. His last release was ‘Dabangg 2’ in the last week of 2012 and his next ‘Mental’ is scheduled to release in January 2014. Hence, 2013 will be the first break for Salman Khan in a career spanning more than 25 years!

Salman’s good friend Aamir Khan started doing fewer movies since the early days of his career. He is leading the list as far as the break years are concerned, and is credited for starting the trend of shooting for only one movie at a time. He took a huge 4 year gap between ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ and ‘Mangal Pandey’, and followed it up with a 3 year gap between ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Talaash’ if we discount a non-commercial film like ‘Dhobi Ghaat’. Hence there are 5 years – 2002,2003,2004,2010 and 2011 – when no Aamir Khan movie released.

Coming to the third Khan, Shah Rukh Khan did not have a major release in 2009. Although he was seen in a cameo in ‘Billu’, this was the only year in his career without a major release. Hrithik Roshan, on the other hand, also plays it slow and steady. As compared to other mega stars, Hrithik’s career is only 13 years old but in that 3 years have passed by without any release – 2005, 2007, and 2009. However, in 2009 he was seen in a small cameo in ‘Luck By Chance’.

Years when a one of the top stars didn’t have a release

  • Aamir Khan – 2002, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011
  • Hrithik Roshan – 2005, 2007, 2009
  • Shahrukh Khan – 2009
  • Salman Khan – 2013

That brings us to the one and only Akshay Kumar. The Khiladi has defied all logic and has amazingly managed to maintain his superstardom even with multiple releases. In a career that began more than 22 years, there has been not a single year when an Akshay Kumar hasn’t hit the silver screen. Infact, there are only 2 years in his career when he had less than 3 releases in a year – 2001 and 2003. In terms of number of releases, Akshay is only competing with himself today. No wonder he is the only star whose movies have cumulatively collected a whopping 2000 crore of net business.

How many movies would you want to see your favourite star in?

  • I used to think that there the star craze (system) is not in the US but it is false, when a film
does well, these names are common warner bros, columbia, 20th century fox,
paramount, universal, james cameron, steven spielberg, peter jackson etc . In the US there
are so many local films that fail to gross $1M, please dont be misled by figures 0f over $1.2B
for some hollywood products in the US, there are less than 80 films every year grossing above
    $10M in lifetime collection.

  • @Rishi dont be so hipper. DCH was a great movie and was a trend setter, i liked it and is one my favourite movie. But business wise not more then Above Average. Fact is fact eithr u accept or not. Boxoffice story is dfifferent. And as for as Lakshay is concern it was a flop and was critisized by it slow pace and also a copy of one of Pakistani Drama which was converted into movie (Lakshay) badly. U can ask to any analyist about what i have written. u can check the Lifetime collections of DCH, Don, ZNMD & Don-2, everything will be crystal clear. I never speak biased or blindly. I speak always with facts and figures. So better to do home work and research about reality. Cheers

  • And for all pplz here is the reality according to the popularity worldwide.

    Worldwide Popularity:

    No. 1 SRK
    No. 2 Salman
    No. 3 Aamir
    No. 4 Hrithik
    No. 5 Ranbir
    No. 6 Saif
    No. 7 Akshay

  • @Gurav thanks. But its true nothing baised. I am reading researching about all since 1992. And its also a true since 1992 Only Khans are ruling big time. Their boxoffice fight is like Tom & Jerry. Many came & disappear or still struggling to reach Top spot but the Top sport is juggling only between 3 Khans. But the Most Successful Khan is SRK no doubt about it either anyone like this truth or not. Truth with remain truth. Bollywood find Oversease profitable just right after DDLJ & KKHH. After that Bollywood became popular in Oversease as well.

  • MENTAL SHOULD BE A SURE SHOT FLOP AS PER MY PREDICTION….how many times cut and paste of south masala works…this Salman has only 1 thing in mind nowadays i.e,to copy paste from south..kick also same

  • bade miyan chote miyan (amitabh + govinda) vs kuch kuch hota hai (shahrukh + kajol +
    rani)
mission kashmir (sanjay + hrithik) vs mohabbatein (amitabh + shahrukh)
    lagaan (aamir) vs gadar (sunny)
jaanemann (salman + akshay) vs don (shahrukh)
saawariya (ranbir) vs om shanti om (shahrukh)
god tussi great ho (amitabh + salman) vs bachna e haseeno (ranbir)
main aur mrs khanna (salman) vs blue (akshay + sanjay) vs all the best (ajay)
son of sardaar (ajay + sanjay) vs jab tak hai jaan (shahrukh)
Higher grossing films on the right.
Actors who rarely won clashes at the box office all of a sudden became biggest stars in India
    because of a few blockbursters.

  • Azad name reminds me of Auzar
2 things common in both films. Same Director same Hero. I hope 3rd common thing will happen as well and that is Boxoffice collection.

  • Ajay – Many large scale distributors and producers coerce exhibitors to show movies to the
detriment of others in this industry.
YRF – We make about 2 films in a year while Eros makes at least 4 films in a year.
How can you say we are a big firm.
Observer – YRF announced their release first and why are you bothered about the number
of single screens they have booked
Ajay – YRF is making my product so limited in box office reach.
Observer – (5 months after) Himmatwala 3100 screens lifetime collections 47cr
Son of Sardaar 1900 sreens lifetime collection 105cr
Ajay – Next time i have an expensive film i will ensure i clash at the box office with
may be shahrukh, ranbir or salman.
I was informed by the astrologist that in 2013 and 2014 i need to clash with a
    big film to make it.
Observer – How is that reasonable
Ajay – For instance a big film can promote my film indirectly and persons who
dislike the producers or stars of the other film can offer my film solidarity and watch
    it.
This comment is just for comic relief, no offense to anyone.

  • Aamir did not take break due to quality. World knows his life was in doldrums after DCH.
Akshay works too much. SRK and Salman have only one year in which they did not have a release.
Ideally a star should have atleast 1-2 films releasing every year. No more.

  • Exclusive E-24 Update:
Arbaaz Khan is Planning to Take Srk as a Villan in Dabang 3……
The Biggest News of the Year Arbaaz khan who is very much closer to Srk is dreaming something Bigger….
Arbaaz Khan in his Latest Interview to a News Paper said: It was My Dream to Direct Salman Bhai and Srk Together bcoz we r like a family some missunderstandings occurs bt tht is Clear nw and i Hope My Dream becomes true as i wants Srk to play a Main Villan in Dagang 3 Opp Salman Bhai….
He Added: It will be a Treat toboth the Fans of Salman bhai and Srk lets Hope for the Best….

I think SRK should say no to this. Whats ur opinion SRKians?

  • i think Aamir and Hrithik should do one movie per year because they are most dedicated actors and will provide good movies sure.
for srk Salman they can give either 1 or 2 movie ok for them as both having great star appeal and less content oriented movies.

for Akshay i still hate his decision to do 3-4-5 movies in a year my advice him to give max 2 movies in a year one like OMG,Special 26 kinda and other Rowdy rathore kind containg action/comedy drama.

but this year missing of Salman definitely helped SRK surely as his absence of EID give srk a chance to bounce back strongly….

  • @CEROCKS : Sunny doel was the baap of all the khans in 90’s and early 2000’s, GHAYAL and DIL released together and ghayal did more business, then aamir was also overshadowed by Sunny with GHATAK, released along with Raja Hindustani, then came Gadar that was released with Lagaan and everyone knows the result. As far as SRK is considered: Border overshadowed Pardes in boxoffice collections as well as content, then Asoka and Indian released together and Asoka was flop and INDIAN Was hit. Coming to Salman Khan we know how he was overpowered by Sunny in Jeet, at that time he was kid in front of him, now he shows his muscles, the raw body of Sunny deol cannot be compared with Salman’ cuts, IN Damini in that single seen where he beats up the goons while saving meenakshi, no one can ever match that intensity, that looks so real, I am fan of all the khans and Akshay but to me Sunny is the real action hero.

  • @navin. oh i forgot u had reiterated that tsunami express wouldnt cross ett.. as usual all ur predictions go wrong
    pity on u
ur comments deflect ur state of mind
    i completely agree
from calling it to be disaster to grossing 400 plus crores worlwide.
salman tried very hard in last 1234 attempts
but srk withh just one busted u people wide open. ha ha ha

  • @Noam : If you are saying Srk did what Salman could not then will you also agree Salman did what no other actor did in 1994? That is breaking Sholay’s life time collection with HAHK. Srk doing do things which Salman did 20 years ago.
