Will Kick remain the biggest grosser of 2014?

Q. With India collections of Rs 233 crore, will Salman Khan’s Kick remain the biggest grosser of 2014 or will Aamir’s PK collect more? – Rohit Sibal (Surat)

A. Too early to predict if PK will eventually go on to beat the lifetime collections of Kick. Both movies have opened to similar collections (26 crore). Kick collected around 83 crore in its first weekend, while PK should collect a little more. The opening weekend business of Kick was affected by the Ramadan period, but the film did exceptional well after Eid. PK too has plenty of holidays (Christmas, New Year, apart from the weekly holiday Sunday). It also has 3 open weeks at the box office, and the word-of-mouth seems to be better too. But the difficult part for PK is, it has to make-up for poor business at mass-centres with extraordinary business at metro cities. Kick collected around 82 crore from single-screens, PK might struggle to touch 50 cr – which was what Happy New Year collected from single-screens. A comparison between Kick and PK will be interesting, except those articles here on Indicine in the next few days.

Q. Do critics review really affect Box office collection? – Nipun Kumar Purohit

A. That would depend on a lot of factors like the response a trailer gets, star cast, director etc. For a film like PK, as long as critics don’t thrash it, critical acclaim wouldn’t make much difference at the box office, as most moviegoers would want to watch the film once anyway. For smaller multiplex-targeted films like Queen, reviews do make a big difference. Also, the impact of reviews way lesser than word-of-mouth. What your friends say about a film, always carries more value than what a critic has to say. Having said that, a lot of people living in hostels depend on ‘Times Of India’ review. The reach of their newspaper review is tremendous!

Q. When will the film Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karun starring Kapil Sharma and Directed by Abbas-Mustan will release ? – Sam

A. The release date of Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karun hasn’t been announced. The film went on floors in November. The makers have only said ‘Summer 2015’!

Q. How is the trailer of Roy received and what are its box office prospects? – Siddhanth Shenoy

A. The response has been fairly good. Ranbir Kapoor’s presence will ensure a decent initial, but the film doesn’t feature him in a full-fledged role. Arjun Rampal has a meatier role to play. Business will be restricted to multiplexes in cities, it will get a limited single-screen release.
