Punjab NGO moves Supreme Court to halt release of ‘Udta Punjab’

A Punjab based NGO, Human Rights Awareness Association, on Wednesday sought to put on hold the screening of controversial film ‘Udta Punjab’ as it projected the agrarian state in a bad light.

The NGO told a Supreme Court vacation bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice L.Nageshwara Rao that the Bombay High Court, which on Monday had cleared the screening of the film with one cut, could not have interfered with the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The Bombay High Court, had directed the producer of ‘Udta Punjab’ to make one cut and insert three disclaimers saying, among others that the film did not promote drugs.

Earlier, the CBFC had directed more than a dozen cuts in the film – down from the previous 89 – coupled with other directions before its release.

  • I don’t remember the last time any movie got embroiled in so many controversies . There are only 2 days left for the movie to release so I don’t think the release can be halted . If the NGO can provide something concrete today or tomorrow than the release can be stopped . There is a little possibility because they are going to SC and if the Apex Court declares than UP will not be released this Friday . Nothing is bigger than SC and let’s wait and watch what happens in the next 2 days . If this is a publicity stunt even than it will increase the buzz of UP as people will always be in a suspense regarding the release of the movie . Come this Friday we will see what happens to UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Punjab NGO is doing this nonsense because they are trying to hide their weekness. They are failed to solve drug problem in punjab so they are trying to do this to show that they have done their job very effectively in punjab. Shame on punjab NGO.

  • looking to the promos songs of udta punjab its look like they r promoting drugs
its not look like they r against of drugs

  • @aman really? Movie like Udta punjab is very needed for indian cinema but commenter like you are bad for Indicine.

  • @MIRZYA(COMING SOON) can’t say udta punjab will be hit or flop? But mirzya will be definitely huge disaster. Best of luck for MIRZYA to be disaster.

MIRZYA is earlier in my watch list this year but I willn’t watch it because of you. Now it is not my awaited list.

  • Check if it is Shahid behind this NGO to file a complaint and then create some more hype around this movie. This guy is so desperate now with all the movies flopping can go to any extend…but movie will surely be disaster.

  • people want to stop the movie from being released because it shows punjabs drug problem and they dont want to realize that this is true..
the makers dont care about small box office of punjab

  • Why movie like udta punjab has get in trouble after trouble? NGO’s work is to work in welfer of society and people. But why are they against udta punjab which is about serious social issues i.e drug abuse. Many people will be aware after watching it. Or, atleast get something to know about the social evil i.e drug abuse.

They have to support udta punjab instead of doing this nonsense.

@sasha I agree with you that punjab NGO is failed to do their work properly so they try to hide truth.

  • No matter UP releases on this Friday or not it is already a big success. It has created huge awareness among the masses regarding the drugs problem of Punjab. From last couple of days all the major news channels have been organising plenty of talk shows on the issue. Even common masses are talking about drugs..
