Vote: Best Karan Johar Movie

As Karan Johar celebrates his 40th birthday today, we take a trip down memory lane and look at some of his best films.

In a directorial career spanning over 14 years, Karan has only directed four films, with this year’s Student Of The Year being his 5th.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna My Name Is Khan

  • 1998: It all started with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan. The film remains, arguably, his best work ever and one of the best Hindi rom-com’s of all time.
  • 2001: After KKHH, he directed another landmark film with the biggest star cast in history – Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Jaya Bachchan, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. It was pure at heart and the tagline “It’s all about loving your parents” worked wonder as the family audience thronged to theaters. The film shattered box-office records both overseas and in India.
  • 2006: Johar returned with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, a film on adultery and extra-marital affairs. It was his first film without his favorite leading lady Kajol. While the business in India was disappointing (although it did manage HIT status), KANK broke the 5 year old record of K3G in the overseas markets.
  • 2010: With My Name Is Khan, Karan reunited SRK and Kajol after 8 long years. The film was different, as the lead character had a autistic disorder called Asperger syndrome. MNIK won Karan the Filmfare Best Director trophy, his second after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Apart from direction, Karan has also produced films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Wake Up Sid and Agneepath. This year, his first film without Shahrukh Khan – Student of the year – featuring several newcomers is scheduled for release in October.
