Video Trailer: Kites – Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori

The first official action packed trailer of Kites was recently unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival and although the quality of the video isn’t great, its a must watch!

Hrithik Roshan, the lead actor of Kites, charmed the audience at Cannes. Unveiling the movie Hrithik said “Kites is an international film shot in the US, in English, with a Mexican actress. There is no Bollywood song-and-dance. There is dance, but it is realistic, not Bollywood style. In Bollywood, if an actor has to sing, there is playback, and there are dances out of nowhere, that’s obsolete now. This is a film for a world platform.”

Directed by Anurag Basu (Murder, Life in a Metro) Kites stars Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori and Kangna Ranaut in key roles. The film is expected to release worldwide this Diwali.

weird!! is hrithik not frm bollywood?? just didn’t like the comment…

  • RR, we have to start accepting the fact that, if we have to compete with Hollywood and get western non-indian viewers to watch Bollywood films, the song and dance routines have to be ditched.

Hrithik isn’t saying song and dance will not be a part of Kites, there will be songs, there will be dances. Just that it wont be unrealistic. Remember the Haila Haila song from Koi Mil Gaya or Pyaar Ki Ek Kahani / Koi Tumsa Nahi in Krrish? Thats Bollywood style dance numbers, which Hrithik believes is obsolete or doesnt work with western audience. It doesn’t really take the story forward does it..?

  • Absolutely amazing, October can’t come soon enough! Hritihik is such a great actor you could fall in love with him very easily!

  • I hope Bollywood doesn’t go too Western (and I’m a Westerner). The songs and dances of Bollywood (as well as the heart and depth of emotion) are the reasons I’ve moved from Hollywood to an almost pure diet of Bollywood offerings.

It’s fine to have them more ‘in context’ as many Bollywoods do when they make excuses to have dance numbers in clubs and things. However this stuff is the magic of Bollywood.

I also suspect that as Americans seem very parochial and don’t seem generally to cope with accents well (they don’t understand our Australian accent for instance), making a movie all in English with 2 people with accents may not get the wider audience. It isn’t that the 2 actors don’t speak good English as Hrithik is easy to understand to my ear and I only have English) but they seem to be wanting him to be the breakthrough into Hollywood and bring hindi movies to the wider world. There’s a danger they’ll be seen as second-rate Hollywoods instead.

For me hindi movies are great just as they are: a not so well kept secret that is already reaching an expanded smaller niche market in the West. In Melbourne where I am, I heard recently of an ordinary local Aussie childrens party going ‘Bollywood’ and there are quite a few Bollywood dance classes and venues.

When the hugely successful Aussie TV program ‘So you think you can dance’ was on, they regularly set them Bollywood numbers. In fact it’s a pity they didn’t get Hrithik as a guest host on that program, and to do a number, as there would have been huge instant interest without needing to change a thing I’d bet.

For me Hrithik has so much more appeal than any Brad Pitt so I hope he doesn’t get lost to Hollywood in some way as they also seem to be good at swallowing up and spitting out other country’s actors ofter – though some of the Aussies have fared a bit better of late e.g. Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman – though the latter would be better with some Bollywood loosening up!)

You may have noticed though that Westerners don’t do this Bollywood stuff nearly as well. I often cringe when they put western women in Bollywood movies dancing. They always look so bony, rigid and unsensuous (but perhaps Bollywood directors like them as they can find women happier to wear more revealing clothes – though it’s sad that then conveys more to the Indian men that all western women are happy to be more sexual as that’s not the case – and I’ve met quite a few traumatised women who were groped and propositioned by men when travelling India as they had that idea). And I haven’t liked many movies like Bollywood Queen that tried to do Bollywood within an a Western context (nor ‘Marigold’ either or some other cross-cultural clones). Hindi movies have the natural mix that’s really hard to emulate it would appear.

I will be eagerly anticipating Kites but I hope this isnt the death knell of Bollywood. I just find many of the non song and dance ‘real’ Bollywoods less exciting (with the exception of a ‘Rock On’ or ‘Luck by Chance’,

  • looks like a truly international film. can anyone tell whos doing the vfx and di for the film?

  • I’m an African American westerner, and I love Bollywood just the way it is. Hollywood movies are just awful. I don’t care for nudity and foul language, so I’m very glad to have found Bollywood movies. They are clean and my whole family can watch. I personally hope that Bollywood doesn’t go Hollywood. I know actors want to stretch and grow, but be innovative and don’t let Hollywood continue to be the accepted standard. We love Hrithik as a role model!

  • I can’t wait for Kites to come out. I do thnk it will take Hrithik international. He has an unusual set of acting skills where he can work in both Hollywood and Bollywood movies, and I think that’s part of what he meant by his comment. He’s reached his level of fame in Bollywood; not only as an actor, but he’s considered one of the best dancers too! Perhaps he wants to become more challenged and more serious in his acting, and I think Hollywood movies will allow him a bit more room. I do love Bollywood movies, and like Eleanor mentioned, that is the reason I began watching them in the frist place…I saw the dance routine from Kaho Na Pyaar Na Hai on channel 35, and I saw Hrithik Roshan and I was like…this is interesting!! I think the dance routines are a large part of what makes Bollywood movies, and I don’t think they will cut them out…
