Udta Punjab has done well in its first weekend at the box office, as the film was running at high occupancy throughout the weekend. The growth from Friday to Sunday was limited, but since the opening itself was above par, the film had a healthy weekend at the box office.
The Abhishek Chaubey film still has a long way to go before it can recover its cost. The film doesn’t have much value as far as the satellite rights is concerned, so a huge chunk of the 45 crore investment has to come from theatrical business.
On the positive side of things, the film has two open weeks at the box office, before the release of Salman Khan’s Sultan. If the hold is around 5 crore today (Monday), it’ll mean the film is set for a long and successful run. Around 4-4.5 crore would be a normal drop. Anything less than 4 will be alarming.
The first weekend business is the highest for a film starring Shahid Kapoor in the lead. Udta Punjab is around 10% higher than his previous best (Rs 30.7 crore total of R.. Rajkumar), but this wasn’t exactly a solo film because the film benefitted from the presence of Diljit Dosanjh who is the biggest star in Punjab.

If it manages to hold well on it’s first monday, i.e., upto Rs7cr, then it can cross Rs70cr mark in it’s lifetime otherwise it will finish with a lifetime collection of upto Rs60cr.

I saw Udta Punjab yesterday . It is a well made and a hard hitting film on Drugs . Shahid and Alia both have given terrific performances . Diljit was Superb as Sartaj and showed his class on debut . Kareena was good as Preet . Satish Kaabil has also done a fine job as Tayaji . The 2nd half is a bit dull and after a point is dragging but overall a pretty good movie with a honest intention . I liked UP more than K&S, Wait and TJB . Abhishek Chaubey is getting better with Ishqiya, Dedh Ishqiya and now Udta Punjab . Hats off to Anurag Kashyap and the entire team for fighting for this movie . This movie deserves to be seen without any cuts . The weekend collections are very good and it is doing excellent business in Punjab which is really well . I think it should be Shahid’s Highest Grosser beating the Crapfest Rajkumar . I think it will do well as it getting the support from audience and critics . But still today’s collections will make the picture clear as to where it is going . Not the Best Film of 2016 for me but a well made one . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you can not praise shaahid alone for the good opening and fantastic weekend collection then why did you praise shahrukh alone for fantastic opening of dilwaale and unbeliveable overseas collection and forgot kajol? if shahrukh alone is a crowd puller and deserve a solo appreciation in a multistarrer project than why he did not break my name is khan overseas collection when he released various project like ra 1, hny, ce e.t.c. before dilwale?

I’ve watched it yesterday and I must say it’s one of the best movie of the year so far ! Great performance by Shahid and Alia, well done to Diljit Dosanjh too. Overall I really hope that this film will hold well and cross 70 cr, it deserves to be a big hit !
