‘Tubelight’ has flopped at the domestic box office and Salman Khan has failed for the first time this decade during Eid. The film failed to show the kind of growth that it needed on the big holiday for Eid. It has collected Rs 83 crore in 4 days at the box office, with the lowest collections coming on the Eid holiday.
The circuits and centres that were affected by Razman showed good growth on Monday, but business witnessed major falls at places where the impact of Eid was limited over the weekend. The film could collect around 110-115 crore by the end of its first week and the second weekend will decide whether the film can go on to become the highest Hindi grosser of the year.
The struggle for a film like ‘Tubelight’ during Eid to easily beat a 132-crore grosser like ‘Raees’ has sent shock-waves within the industry. It also shows the extremely unpredictable side of film business, as most in the trade were expecting it to comfortably cross the 100 crore mark by the end of the Eid holiday on Monday.
Meanwhile, Salman’s golden run during Eid has finally come to an end after 6 consecutive box office blockbusters. Between 2010 to 2016, the megastar had 6 Eid releases – Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan – and almost all of them went on to be record-openers and major box office grossers.
His latest release, directed by the same man (Kabir Khan) who gave him his biggest grosser and arguably his career-best film (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), is also likely to give him his biggest failure since ‘Veer’ in January 2010.
The consistency that Salman has shown over the years – making even the most mediocre and critically rejected films, into major commercial successes at the box office – by his sheer presence and stardom, is incredible to say the least.
Questions over his stardom are now being raised by the very people who hailed him as the top star not too long ago – which also goes to show that the only thing that matters for the film industry and trade is the last Friday – even if it is for a star who carried two out of his last three films over the 300 crore mark.

I still dont want Salman to go back to masala entertainer like Dabang 3 which is now being rumored to be releasing on EID 2018. Dabang 3 is not going to work in today’s time how hard anyone may try. And as rumored, if Prabhu Deva directs it, it will be another setback for SK on EID 2018. He must choose scripts wisely which can cater to his mass audience as well as can bring family audiences in multiplexes for his movies. I still have high hopes on TZH but will not be surprised if too fairs average at the box office because ETT was a mediocre product and did not require a sequel. ETT worked due to some good action scenes, excellent trailer and good promotion strategy but ETT does not have a high recall value.

From this movie it is clear that stardom has very less impact on the film, It is about good trailer, chartbuster songs and the most important is the content. In this decade we have seen major flops of the biggest stars like Talas of Amir, Fan of SRK, Mohenjodaro of Hrithik, and the most recent TubeLight of Salman.
Doesn’t really matter. SRK’s Fan with good reviews and WOM did 80cr+ lifetime. And that film had one partial holiday on its first day while Tubelight only had one major holiday on its 4th day. If u take the eid holiday out then Tubelight basically released during a normal weekend and the holiday on Monday only contributes around 9cr to its entire lifetime. Film will worst case do 120cr lifetime and 120 minus the 9cr brought in on eid is 111cr. So even at his worst Salman is much ahead of Srk becz Tubelight doesn’t even have half the support that Fan had in terms of reviews and WOM.
To Hrithik and SRK fans –
Stop fighting each other. Everyone knows that both RAEES and KAABIL would have grossed more than 180cr on EID solo. Both were content movies and deserves festival release.
Bad luck for both Salman and SRK(as JHMS looks bad and flop)
Btw I have a question for Indicine.
I have seen in the past that your LBO predictions are incredibly good! When Indicine predicted 148 crs for Dilwale I mocked Indicine and expected that Dilwale would do 170 crs at least. But time proved me wrong, and Indicine came out as winner with 98% accuracy.
This time when Indicine predicted 146 crs for Tubelight I was taken aback again but once again Indicine will surprise everyone as Tubelight probably won’t event reach 140crs.
What is the secret behind this? I bet no other trade website or magazine has this amount of accuracy.

@The Phenom, we are better at analysing (LBO / Lifetime) than outright vague predictions (FBO / opening day). The dynamics of business is changing, so FBO accuracy has dropped well below our 2015/16 standards. Word-of-mouth is coming into play as early as noon these days, so predicting that a Raabta will fall under Rangoon is very difficult. We’ve to look at ways to improve there.
Anyway, thank you. People are quick to highlight and remember all the wrong predictions, but most don’t credit or even notice the accurate ones.
In last 17 years from 2000 to 2017 Aamir gives only 1 Flop – Mela.

Indicine, why you have written the obituary of the film. Why are you in tearing hurry to write off the Film. The movie has made 80 crore in 4 days. Although it has not set the box office “ablaze” but that was never meant to be. It’s a tear jerker & Salman fans seems to have less enthusiastic about it. That’s it.

my opinion about this film, the negatives:
The story is during Ghandi’s era.. but the costumes and the plot doesn’t reflect those days.
Salman is wearing those ugly shirts with the vest from the starting of the film till the end ( only in the last seen where he meets his brother he changed)
It’s slow in the second half of the film.. got bored
He doesn’t look good to act as an idiot.. his role in Bajrangi was different
Noticed any film with his brother Suhail would flop and would not do well
The scene where a car or a jeep flops.. it was a (toy) only.. looool do they think the audience is stupid?!! like the old movies!!
If this film was released on regular days.. 100% it would have flopped everywhere also in overseas countries.

It is ridiculous to say that Salman has lost his star power………maybe we can start saying that if a film like TZH doesnt open well and sustain well……….
However, we all know that TZH will open very well even if it is an average film due to many factors like Salman, Christmas (Falling on Monday), YRF production, sequel to a successful film etc……
I’ve said this earlier, Tubelight was an offbeat film and the reason Salman did it is because of the super success of Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Salman is smart and experienced enough to know that he will fast lose his core audience if he doesnt cater to them for long………
Many people including Indicine say that Salman’s stardom has made average films work. But people dont realise that those films worked because they were more than just average for Salman’s core fan base.
Point being that a bad film can become a hit due to star power. But a bad film can never become a Blockbuster due to only star power. The content has to be appealing to certain section of the audience which in Salman’s case has been the single screen audience and the interiors market.
For instance a film like Bodyguard wasn’t liked much by the multiplex audience in the big metros but it worked big time with the masses. Thus was a big success overall.
Tubelight has shown that Salman films can fail if they dont cater to the masses and im sure Salman is intelligent enough to understand that.
BTW Success of Bahubali and failure of Tubelight will once again raise the importance of festive releases. I have just one thing to say – If Tubelight released on a normal weekend, it may have struggled to cross 100 cr as well……..Whereas Bahubali may have collected the same even if it released on Eid. Thus in a nutshell, festive periods are even more important when content is disappointing !!!
