A lot has changed since the last Top 5 actors list that we published in September 2013. Quite a few big films like Besharam, Boss, Ram Leela, R.. Rajkumar and of course the two blockbusters Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 released in the last 3 months of the year. The failure of Besharam has pushed Ranbir, who was previously in the Top 3, lower down the list. Akshay Kumar is out of the Top 5, as BOSS under-performed at the box office.
- This list would be based on the approximate box office outcome (Nett collections) of their last five movies
- Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration
- Dated movies won’t be taken under consideration
- Only domestic box office performance is being taken into account
Top Actors In Bollywood
Salman Khan – Dabangg 2 (160 cr), Ek Tha Tiger (199 cr), Bodyguard (141 cr), Ready (121 cr), Dabangg (141 cr)

1. Salman hasn’t had a release in 2013, but no other ‘superstar’ has managed to come close, even though Aamir now has two 200 crore grossers! That pretty much sums up how consistent Salman has been in the last 3 years or so — 5 back-to-back record-breaking blockbusters in a row, with the total collections of his last 5 movies adding up to a mind-boggling figure of Rs 762 crore.
His first film in more than a year, Jai Ho, releases this month. And unless it fails miserably and collects less than 70 crore, Salman will continue to be the top star at the domestic box office.
He also has the keenly awaited Eid release ‘Kick’ which is expected to challenge the records set by Dhoom 3.
Aamir Khan – Dhoom 3 (270 cr – expected from Hindi), Talaash (90 cr), Dhobi Ghat (14 cr), 3 Idiots (202 cr), Ghajini (115 cr)

2. Dhoom 3, which is now the highest grosser of all time, has taken Aamir Khan to the second spot. Not only has the actor overtaken Shahrukh Khan at the domestic box office, but has also challenged his supremacy in the overseas markets.
His upcoming release – Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K is expected to be yet another sure-shot 200 crore grosser – and if it does, it could well be yet another mega battle between the three Khans for the top spot in 2014.
Shahrukh Khan – Chennai Express (227 crore), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (122 cr), Don 2 (106 cr), Ra. One (115 cr), My Name Is Khan (73 cr)

3. The super-success of Chennai Express took Shahrukh Khan to the second spot, but with Dhoom 3 breaking all records, SRK has dropped down the list. The superstar has ‘Happy New Year’ releasing this Diwali and Maneesh Sharma’s FAN that is expected to release in December this year. It’ll be interesting to see if the two films can take SRK to the top spot.
Hrithik Roshan – Krrish 3 (233 cr), Agneepath (120 cr), Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara (90 cr), Guzaarish (30 cr), Kites (49 cr)

4. For the first time since we started ranking the actors, Hrithik Roshan makes it to the Top 5 with the Hindi version of Krrish 3 collecting Rs 233 crore at the domestic box office.
Hrithik has an out-an-out commercial film Bang Bang, also starring Katrina Kaif, lined up for release this year. While he’s unlikely to challenge the Khans, he could get pretty close to the Top 3 by the end of the year.
Since Bang Bang is expected to release before Happy New Year, the film would need to collect Rs 169 crore or more for Hrithik to beat SRK and take the 3rd spot.
Ranbir Kapoor – Besharam (59 cr), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (189 cr), Barfi! (110 cr), Rockstar (68 cr), Anjaana Anjaani (40 cr)

5. Besharam was expected to take a good start at the box office and it did, what with the film collecting close to Rs 20 crore on its opening day. But the response was so bad that the film ended with lifetime business of less than 60 crore. It was arguably the worst received biggie of the year, as even a film like Himmatwala held up better over the weekend.
Ranbir has two releases this year – Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos and Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, which is scheduled to release during Christmas 2014. It could well be a battle between him and Akshay Kumar for the 5th spot this year, as the latter has A.R. Murugadoss’ Holiday releasing in the first half of 2014.

- The average collections of Shahid Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi and Imran Khan is way too low at this stage. But Shahid’s last release R.. Rajkumar did very well at the box office, so he too, along with Emraan (who is going through a career low), could make it to the Top 5 in the next few years.
I wanna see shahrukh/hrithik at the top followed by aamir(i hate him as an individual) saif akshay ranbir/shahid.

What a strange list…. I wont get too excited about whos top or second- its irrelevant for me.
Everyone knows after 2013’s Box Office numbers ( 3 200 cr grossers) that moving forwards most Big Movies featuring the Top 4 plus Akshay /Ranbir can potentially collect 100cr over any given extended Holiday weekend so in 2 years time I predict the Top 6 actors to be able to attain min of 5 100 cr grossers and more in their last 5 film catalogue…!!! The list will then be more FAIRER to differentiate between each actors domestic clout because the guy with say more 200 cr grossers to his name will be the star whose movie was not affected by bad mouthing media persons or poor public WOM…!
Arguing about the impact of the list today is not accurate in my opinion as earning 100 crs is an easier task than say 5 yrs ago when Ghajini did it. In afew yrs we will be able to easily ascertain true value of a stars clout when his film go to 200 cr and beyond and only then will we see who the public really adore as a 250 cr plus film has truly sustained beyond a holiday week…!
@indicine For once I will back you up on something which is Aamir did have a ‘lead role’ in Dhobi Ghat but there were some 4/5 ‘lead roles’ in the movie- I saw Aamirs episode on ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ where he mentioned this in late 2010 so technically speaking you are right to quote Aamir on this but if we use common sense then we would realise his role wasnt the ‘Main’ role in film though… It be like saying Thakur Of Chennai Sanjeev Kumar had the Lead Role in Sholay when at the time of release Dharmendra was promoted/ judged to be the films Lead role…!

Star Popularity vs. Box Office: Not The Same Thing!

Last week, @OrmaxMedia tweeted annual results of its star popularity tracking research called Ormax Stars India Loves (OSIL). As per the results, Akshay Kumar ranked as the third most popular male star in India, in 2013, behind Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. Katrina Kaif led the female stars list, well ahead of Deepika Padukone.
Every time OSIL results are tweeted, we get some standard questions in response. These examples capture their essence:
1. How can Katrina be no. 1 when Deepika has given four big hits this year?
2. Akshay Kumar at no. 3? All his films this year have flopped except Special 26.
3. Rani in the top 10! Are you kidding me? When did she last do a film?
4. Salman at no. 1 without any release in 2013? But Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 are the biggest grossers. Your survey is wrong.
Most of these questions (largely from fans and fan clubs) have a common and rather simplistic answer. That popularity and box office are two different metrics.
Box office depends on a wide array of factors. While star cast is the leading factor amongst these, other factors can play more than a significant role in determining the box office fate of any film, be it the opening or the lifetime collections. Some of these factors are genre appeal, music, promos, director, word-of-mouth, reviews and franchise appeal.
Popularity, on the other hand, is only about the star’s recall value and equity amongst the audiences. No other factor, including those listed above, have a bearing on a star’s popularity. In simple terms, star popularity, as captured through OSIL, is a measure of a star’s fan base. OSIL covers an annual sample size of more than 40,000 cine-goers in 29 cities in India. Statistically, that’s as representative as we can realistically get in estimating a star’s fan base.
Let’s take the case Akshay Kumar. His fan base being bigger than that of Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, as per OSIL 2013 results. So when his films flop, it simply means that he is not using his equity well. He is either working with the wrong scripts and directors, or signing up films in dead or declining genres (such as masala action in Boss). If he continues to do this for a while, his fan base will obviously take a hit. But fan bases, fairly loyal as they are, don’t desert their favorite stars overnight.
Then there is the other aspect of acting abilities, often mentioned in the Katrina vs. Deepika debate. Katrina can’t act, is a social media argument often given for her supposedly undeserving place on the top. This argument rests of a flawed assumption – that acting skills play a pivotal role in building and strengthening the fan base for a star. In fact, there is very little research evidence to this effect. Katrina’s “personality”, defined in India as a mix of looks, presence, speech and attitude, has driven her fan base for more than five years now. Her careful selection of roles that allow her to use her personality well, has played a crucial role in making her as popular as she is today.
“No. 1 star” and “No. 1 actor” are two entirely different things. And the day they merge, the concept of stardom will die a natural death. Thankfully, we are nowhere close to that happening.
This was a clarification post to settle the incessant twitter debates on OSIL results. Hope it does that at least in some measure!

amir movies are more than an event because it took 6 years from amir to deliver 5 movies while srk and salman took 4 years soo the impact of time period must be included in ranking anyways happy for srk that he is always in the top 3 actors from last 17 years mostly at no 1 but from 2009 i admit that he is fail to get is no 1 position but if anyone knows calculation so this year srks mnik will be obsolete from the list which collects just 73 crr and if happy new year collects 180 to 200 hundred crr srk per movie avd goes near to 160 crr..

My list as per acting credibility 1.Aamir khan 2.Ajay Devgn 3.Ranbir Kapoor 4.Hrithik Roshan 5.Srk Salman can’t have place in top 5 due to his acting limitation but he is top entertainer no doubt. Ranbir is ahead in my list as he successfully done comic roles in Apkgk, while Hr haven’t tried total comic zoner yet and Srk is also too overact while doing comedies so they are not best in all zoner as i noticed, and if i will make list having actor from non commercial movies in the list than top spot taken by Irfan Khan and Aamir moved down to 2nd spot in my list.
next year, same time..indicine..when u release this same article…i bet Akshay will be top..no:1. if not i’ll stop commenting on this sie..not even visit this site. its my pledge…and i’m a man of words.

Can you accept the collection of 15 crores (Sholay) with 227 crores (CE) ? Stop hypocrisy n accept that its Aamir n Salman who are ruling since 2009. Srk still in top 3 but failed to beat AK n SK in last 5 years.
Without a release still on no.1 speaks volume of popularity Salman has. This is definitely a popularity basis analysis n not acting wise. It will be Irfaan Khan, Manoj Bajpai n Naseeruddin Shah if we have to rank only on basis of acting. Aamir n Hrithik are gem, Salman is entertainer n Srk is overacting shop !!!!!
