Top Actors in Bollywood: January 2014

A lot has changed since the last Top 5 actors list that we published in September 2013. Quite a few big films like Besharam, Boss, Ram Leela, R.. Rajkumar and of course the two blockbusters Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 released in the last 3 months of the year. The failure of Besharam has pushed Ranbir, who was previously in the Top 3, lower down the list. Akshay Kumar is out of the Top 5, as BOSS under-performed at the box office.

  • This list would be based on the approximate box office outcome (Nett collections) of their last five movies
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration
  • Dated movies won’t be taken under consideration
  • Only domestic box office performance is being taken into account

Top Actors In Bollywood

Salman Khan Actor

Salman Khan – Dabangg 2 (160 cr), Ek Tha Tiger (199 cr), Bodyguard (141 cr), Ready (121 cr), Dabangg (141 cr)
Salman Khan Total Movie Collections: 762 crore (Average per film: 152.4 cr)

1. Salman hasn’t had a release in 2013, but no other ‘superstar’ has managed to come close, even though Aamir now has two 200 crore grossers! That pretty much sums up how consistent Salman has been in the last 3 years or so — 5 back-to-back record-breaking blockbusters in a row, with the total collections of his last 5 movies adding up to a mind-boggling figure of Rs 762 crore.

His first film in more than a year, Jai Ho, releases this month. And unless it fails miserably and collects less than 70 crore, Salman will continue to be the top star at the domestic box office.

He also has the keenly awaited Eid release ‘Kick’ which is expected to challenge the records set by Dhoom 3.

Aamir Khan Actor

Aamir Khan – Dhoom 3 (270 cr – expected from Hindi), Talaash (90 cr), Dhobi Ghat (14 cr), 3 Idiots (202 cr), Ghajini (115 cr)
Aamir Khan Total Movie Collections: 691 cr (Average per film: 138.2 cr)

2. Dhoom 3, which is now the highest grosser of all time, has taken Aamir Khan to the second spot. Not only has the actor overtaken Shahrukh Khan at the domestic box office, but has also challenged his supremacy in the overseas markets.

His upcoming release – Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K is expected to be yet another sure-shot 200 crore grosser – and if it does, it could well be yet another mega battle between the three Khans for the top spot in 2014.

Shahrukh Khan Actor

Shahrukh Khan – Chennai Express (227 crore), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (122 cr), Don 2 (106 cr), Ra. One (115 cr), My Name Is Khan (73 cr)
Shahrukh Khan Total Movie Collections: 641 crore (Average per film: 128.2 cr)

3. The super-success of Chennai Express took Shahrukh Khan to the second spot, but with Dhoom 3 breaking all records, SRK has dropped down the list. The superstar has ‘Happy New Year’ releasing this Diwali and Maneesh Sharma’s FAN that is expected to release in December this year. It’ll be interesting to see if the two films can take SRK to the top spot.

Akshay Kumar Actor

Hrithik Roshan – Krrish 3 (233 cr), Agneepath (120 cr), Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara (90 cr), Guzaarish (30 cr), Kites (49 cr)
Hrithik Roshan Total Movie Collections: 522 cr (Average per film: 104.4 cr)

4. For the first time since we started ranking the actors, Hrithik Roshan makes it to the Top 5 with the Hindi version of Krrish 3 collecting Rs 233 crore at the domestic box office.

Hrithik has an out-an-out commercial film Bang Bang, also starring Katrina Kaif, lined up for release this year. While he’s unlikely to challenge the Khans, he could get pretty close to the Top 3 by the end of the year.

Since Bang Bang is expected to release before Happy New Year, the film would need to collect Rs 169 crore or more for Hrithik to beat SRK and take the 3rd spot.

Ranbir Kapoor Actor

Ranbir Kapoor – Besharam (59 cr), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (189 cr), Barfi! (110 cr), Rockstar (68 cr), Anjaana Anjaani (40 cr)
Ranbir Kapoor Total Movie Collections: 466 cr (Average per film: 93.2 cr)

5. Besharam was expected to take a good start at the box office and it did, what with the film collecting close to Rs 20 crore on its opening day. But the response was so bad that the film ended with lifetime business of less than 60 crore. It was arguably the worst received biggie of the year, as even a film like Himmatwala held up better over the weekend.

Ranbir has two releases this year – Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos and Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, which is scheduled to release during Christmas 2014. It could well be a battle between him and Akshay Kumar for the 5th spot this year, as the latter has A.R. Murugadoss’ Holiday releasing in the first half of 2014.

Actors who can break into the Top 5 in the next few months

  • Akshay Kumar – Boss (59 cr), Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (63 cr), Special 26 (70 cr), Khiladi 786 (71 cr), Rowdy Rathore (133 cr). [Fortchoming film: Holiday] - Total: 396 cr (Average per film: 79.2 cr)
  • John Abraham – (Madras Café (45 cr), Shootout at Wadala (62 cr), I, Me aur Main (9 cr), Race 2 (102 cr), Housefull 2 (114 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Welcome Back] - Total: 332 cr (Average per film: 66.4 cr)
  • Ajay Devgn – (Satyagraha (63 cr), Himmatwala (45 cr), Son of Sardaar (102 cr), Bol Bachchan (101 cr), Tezz (17 cr)) [Forthcoming film: Action Jackson] - Total: 328 cr (Average per film: 65.6 cr)
  • Saif Ali Khan – Bullet Raja (36 cr), Race 2 (102 cr), Cocktail (76 cr), Agent Vinod (45 cr), Aarakshan (42 cr) [Forthcoming film: Happy Ending / Humshakals] - Total: 301 cr (Average per film: 60.2 cr)
  • The average collections of Shahid Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi and Imran Khan is way too low at this stage. But Shahid’s last release R.. Rajkumar did very well at the box office, so he too, along with Emraan (who is going through a career low), could make it to the Top 5 in the next few years.

  • My box office predictions for some films in 2014:-

    1. Salman Khan
    a. Jai Ho : 135 crores
    b. Kick : 145 crores
The above 2 films cannot be directly predicted based on the performance of the south originals. The taste of south audience is different from the north audience. The masala genre is strong in south but in north it is losing appeal now because of overdose of such films. But both films are holiday releases so should get some initial benefit. And if there is good emotional and family content then collections can be much more. Right now only entertainment for the masses can be expected.

    2. Shah Rukh Khan
    a. Happy New Year : 250 crores
Musical thriller heist film. This genre-combo will work best on good thrills and chartbuster music. This kind of film appeals to both classes and masses. The multi-starcast is added bonus. Not sure about content but music of Farah Khan’s films have been chartbusters (so similar expectations).
    b. Fan – 130 crores
Maneesh Sharma directed romantic film (Band Baaja Baarat, Shuddh Desi Romance) and YRF production. SRK and YRF can take it to 100 crores but nothing except content will take it much further.

    3. Aamir Khan
    a. PK : 250 crores
Aamir-Hirani combo gave 3 Idiots. But can they repeat it again? Raju Hirani films are always super-strong in content and Aamir is also a perfectionist when it comes to scripts. So as far as content is concerned, we can rest assured that it will be good. Only problem is this film is a satire on religion and godmen so it may get involved in political and legal controversies. And it is doubtful how much it will appeal to the masses (class audience will like such satirical films). Good supporting cast with Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajput. And I read somewhere Aamir plays an alien. Interesting.

    4. Hrithik Roshan
    a. Bang Bang : 150 crores
Spy film with top list actors Hrithik and Katrina. Just hope it is not another Agent Vinod since the orignal Tom Cruise starrer (Knight and Day) got poor reception. But if there are good action sequences and the film is made to Indian audiences liking it will be a run away hit.

    5. Akshay Kumar
    a. Holiday : 200 crores
If this film is anywhere as good as the Tamil Thuppakki , nothing can stop it from making 200 crores. Should be Akshay’s highest grosser.
    b. It’s Entertainment : 70 crores
Seems like one of the usual Akshay Kumar’s comedies like Housefull. Sandwiched between biggies Kick and Singham 2. Nothing but good content can save this film.
    c. Gabbar : 100 crores
Remake of Murugadoss tamil film Ramanna. Huge critically-acclaimed blockbuster in south. So good word of mouth like Special 26 and Oh My God can be expected if the content is good as original. But Akshay should stop releasing more than 2 films a year as it leads to viewer fatigue.

    6. Ajay Devgn
    a. Action Jackson : 70 crores
Prabhu Dheva film so masses will love it. But clashing with highly-awaited Holiday. Not much going for it. Content can be the only saviour.
    b. Singham 2 : 200 crores
Ajay-Rohit combo. Among the top 5 most awaited films of the year. Holiday release. Biggest commercial director today – Rohit Shetty. Box Office dhamaka. Only terrible (not even bad) content can stop this film.

    7. Ranbir Kapoor
    a. Roy : 60 crores
Thriller film. Not much is known about it. Stars Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline alongside Ranbir.
    b. Jagga Jasoos : 130 crores
Ranbir – Katrina starrer. Entertaining content will be the key to success.
    c. Bombay Velvet : 90 crores
Anurag Kashyap film set in 1950. Off-beat film with Ranbir and Anushka; Karan Johar in special cameo. Might clash with SRK’s ‘Fan’ during Christmas.

    8. Saif Ali Khan
    a. Happy Ending : 40 crores
Romantic comedy multi-starrer film with Saif, Govinda, Preity Zinta, Ranvir Shorey, Ileana D’Cruz, Kalki Koechlin and Kareena (cameo).
    b. Humshakals : 60 crores
Sajid Khan film. Means content = ZERO. Stars Saif, Ram Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh.
    c. Phantom : 100 crores
26/11 based anti-terrorism film directed by Kabir Khan. Stars Saif and Katrina. Kabir Khan films have good action and content so this film might be Saif’s much needed hit.

  • u shouldn’t add Aamir’s art film dhobi ghat … Aamir did special appearance in the film .. Aamir is best :)

    • @Ace Khan, Dhobi Ghat wasn’t a special appearance. Aamir himself said that it was a lead role. Either way, the list will remain the same. Removing Dhobi Ghat would mean including Taare Zameen Par. So it would only reduce the gap between Aamir and Salman by a few crores.

  • Why only India nett collections….???
A perfomance of a student is assessed on the basis of all subjects..not just 1 subject!!
Make a list according to Worldwide(total) nett collections.Only then it would be Fair!

  • Again “Dhobi ghat” added instead of “TZP” for Aamir.Anyways i m happy that Salman is at the top but it should have not been included bcoz its collection just 14 crore shows that it was a art non commercial movie bcoz for commercial movie nowadays it does not take even a single day to earn 14 crores even with newcomers but still Aamir’s other 4 movies collected more than Srk’s 5 movies.lol

  • Dhobi ghat was a 400 theatre release art film with 8 cr budget. How is it included.Due to DG,it will affect all future ranking of Aamir.

  • My question is why hrithik is always placed behind the khans? ?
IMO,best actor rank should be based on quality, performance, compliteness and stardom as well.so my ranking is

    1.hrithik roshan/SRK
    2.amir khan(i didn’t like dhoom 3)
    3.ranbir kapoor
    4.ranbeer singh
    5.Akshya kumar

salman khan’s last four movies are craps for me.so i didn’t include him.
    It’s my own view.so i don’t need anybody’s opinion.

  • @ Indicine: Can you please generate a report for last 15 years with similar calculations to find out who is in real Top 5 and who are potential super stars.

As per my knolwedge on bollywood, considering Box office Collections in last 15 years, Stars ability to perform Versatile roles/movies & Acting following should be Top 5:

    1) Aamir Khan
    2) Hrithik Roshan
    3) Salman Khan
    4) Sharukh Khan
    5) Akshay Kumar..

  • 2014 pridiction by romance

happy new year 2014, hope for the best.

  • Dhobi Ghat is a non commercial film, and says nothing about Aamir Khans star power, or his clout as a box office draw.

In any case, I would put SRK as number 2, as he is a bigger star than Aamir Khan at the box office, if you disregard other factors. An SRK movie is a sure hit at the least, Aamirs Talaash failed to gain that status.

Also, everyone knows bollywood movies are for the most part pure crap. This is not about top actors, its about top stars. Those are two differen things.

A top actor list would have Irrfan Khan on number one spot.

  • @ indicine its been so good if u publish wordwide ranking too as v have normally seeing CE first movie to cross 400 cr WW,Dhoom 3 first movie to cross 500 cr WW

  • SRK’s starer #HNY will easily cross 200 Cr++ , then SRK’s last 5 movies collection would be around 770 Cr++, and dnt know about FAN movie atleast 140+ or if the content was good then 200 Cr++ is on the card, SRK Aamir & Salman will be there in Top 3, up and downs will be there for the 1st 2nd & 3rd spot.. So far no place for another actor in Top 3

  • @indicine where is BoxOffice Prediction for
2014 movies. Its very intresting article of
your site & i am keenly waiting for it. Please
    publish it soon.
    Thanks

  • @nipun nobody cares about your opinion, I just want to let you know. I have nothing against hrithik he is super star like salman but i love salman more. I don’t like people who hate salman for no reason.

  • @nipun agree that SRK is #1
    1. SRK
    2.Hrithik
    3.Aamir
    4.Salman
Hrithik’s 13 year old career is nowhere near SRK’s 25 year old career

  • @Indicine
If Dhobi Ghat is for Aamir then add Billu for SRK also. It was promoted as an SRK film.
% of SRK involvement in Billu > % involvement of Aamir in Dhobi Ghat

  • Irrfan Khan should be at #1 top stars
His last three movies have been
    1. Life Of Pi (3000+ crore)
    2. The Amazing Spiderman (4000+ crore)
    3. Paan Singh Tomar (20 crore)
    :-)

  • its superb Aamir Khan back to 2nd spot, while no.1 spot is taking by Salman Khan without a release in this year, this shows in last 3 year 2010,2011,2012 he completely thrashed other actors from box office with 5 blockbusters.
Aamir fans no need to argue why included DG in list or not, still this man goes to 2nd spot with one Art film included, if we don’t include DG than total goes to 677+63(TZP)=740 very close to Salman’s 5 release collections.I was damn sure when D3 release he will definitely move up to 2nd spot.
Aamir always said Salman is no.1 and srk fans asking why he is so jealous to srk, the reason Aamir said this line from Dabangg release as it broke 3I weekend record and after that his 4 next release put boxoffice on fire without having strong entertaining script no doubt CE broke lifetime record of 3I but the reason for that movie was love by public while his movie like Bodyguard,Dabangg2& Ready despite being much liked and appreciated raked the Moolah only due his star power, an stardom is one who work for lifetime collection of a movie, not ended with first 3 days, there is no doubt every other actor have popularity and create weekend collection but if movie was not good we see rapid downfall in collection since weekend finish but its not happen in Salman last5 film cases though before 2010 Salman’s brand power not clicked but right now he is on top.

Happy for HR to make mark in top 5 list he is most deserving among any actor apart from 3 khans, though i would like Ajay take his place at 5th position.

@indicine why giving reply to @nolan as you not mentioned billu in the list as it was srk not among srk last 5 releases, you are talking like as you mentioned Billu in july2012 ranking list before ce release. Lol. btw as you said it included Lead performance so in Billu srk was not lead star, he is supporting actor in that sense no place require for Billu in srk list for this i am completely agree.

  • the boxoffice badshah one and only salman khan.proud of you bhai eagerly waiting for jai ho.it will also all time blockbuster.then 6th blockbuster in a row OMG never seen any actor with such records.

  • @X or a Lungiwala Thakur Fan, I just want to say “to h-e-l-l with your stu-pid and biased analysis!” Jai Ho is just two weeks away from its release. What will you do if it crosses your so-called figure 135 crores? Just one advice: meanwhile, hold your lungi tight! Remember “Ready,” an out and out non-festive release in 2011 made a collection 121 crores. Even two festive releases by the Lungiwala Thakur in the same year could not cross its collections. And Jai Ho is a high-end social drama with romance and actions….It will cross 200 crores though it may be able to cross the business of Thakur’s Crappy Express being a non-festive release..
@nipun, I have no idea why you hate Salman Khan. That too, for no reason! He helped your icon a lot before and post his entry in bollywood. Your icon still holds high regard to him. And you prefer to level the Thakur with your Icon! Are the Thakur and his deluded fans are campaigning against K3 collections and degrading Roshans just because K3 crossed Crappy Express’s Records?? Just feel the meanings of this statement of Hrithik “I wonder who these people are who have been so affected by these numbers and my success. Are they the ones I call my friends I wonder?”
If you think Salman’s five films are craps, how could u not think so for Thakur’s last four films? R u really a Duggu fan? Or you are a Thakur fan in disguise of a Duggu fan?

  • for huge demand of readers to provide worldwide figure i make the list.
i used BOI collection in the list but for CE & D3 case using officals as d3 worldwide actual collection not updated by BOI and its still running.
    1. Aamir Khan: D3 550cr-expected,Talaash(174cr),Dhobi Ghat(29-30cr ww gross),3Idiots (392cr),Ghajini(190cr) Total=1335cr ,avg=267cr per film

    2. ShahRukh Khan- Chennai Express 422cr, Jab Tak Hai Jaan 211cr, Don 2 230cr, Ra one 240cr,my Name Is Khan-200cr total=1303cr, avg=260.6cr

    3. Salman Khan- Dabangg2-261cr, Ek Tha Tiger-310cr, Bodyguard-230cr,Dabangg-215cr, Ready-184cr total-1200cr , avg-240 cr

    4. Hrithik Roshan- Krissh3- 374cr, Agneepath-193cr, ZNMD-153cr,Kites-88cr, Guzaarish-42cr\
    total=850/5 avg-170cr.

    5. Ranbir Kapoor- Besharam-95cr, YJHD-302cr,Barfi-175cr,Rockstar-108cr, Anjaana Anjaani-50cr
    total=730 avg=146cr
    Some Points:
-Due to not proper updation of BOI sites collection used Wikipedia as sources.
-All actors last released movies i.e. D3,K3,Ce,dabangg2 official collection used as D3 run not completed yet, K3 controversial collection.
-As D3 final run not completed so can’t get Hindi version collection alone so in case of k3,Ra one & Don2 worldwide collection with all languages included in list along with D3 and used 550cr as expected in lifetime run.
-i have not get proper worldwide collection of Anjaana Anajaani & Gujaarish from wikipedia if some one knows let me know and calculated by you own in respective stars total, but the difference is not so huge so might not affect the ranking of stars.
-though BOI archieves not properly updated i used wiki as source because BOI archives updated till 2010 properly, new BOI can clear doubt of all soon including myself too,and wikipedia follows BOI”
    – if i used TZP (88cr ww) in Aamir list in place of DG as it was commercial movie than Aamir’s total collection will increased to 1393cr i.e.=278.6cr, similarly if i used only hindi collection than srk total will reduced to 1243cr i.e. avg -248.6cr so it will give huge difference among Aamir & srk but i can’t add because Aamir Himself said DG is his movie at the time of Talaash promotion and as worldwide we have to use total collection combined and also d3 & k3 collection for Hindi not confirmed yet.

P.S.- myths of haters Dhobi ghat is flop & Talaash was semi hit, as a boi follower i will use verdict of BOI(apart from BOI every sites declared Talaash a Hit), as per wikipedia says “Box Office India declared Talaash was a “hit” in India and a “super hit” overseas.[8][9][10] It eventually grossed 1.74 billion (US$28 million) worldwide. for Dhobi ghat wiki says”Boxofficeindia, com declared the film as a ‘Semi Hit’.
as per Indicine comments about DG”we can’t really call a film costing 8 crores with returns in excess of 30 crores, a Flop! Not to forget, the international and critical acclaim. Also, it been liked by its target audience.”
