Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle
There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.
So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.
The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.
Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.
So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!
Here are the number.
5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.
- Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
- Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
- Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
- Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
- Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster
Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.
4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.
- Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
- Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
- Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
- Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
- Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.
3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.
- Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
- Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
- Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
- Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
- Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.
2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.
- Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
- Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
- Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
- Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
- Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit
Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.
1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.
- Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
- Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
- Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
- Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
- Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit
Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.
The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.
We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.
Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.
Lets discuss below, if you dont agree with the article please post a comment on why. Thank you for reading.

Dr. R C Patel: (September 7, 2008 at 5:34 pm)
Before making any comments on the placing of the top five actors in Bollywood today, I ask esteemed viewers [esp Mr. Raj] to consider the following:
1. Could Akshay Kumar carry off the role of Akhbar in Jodha? He would have made the majestic Akhbar look like a country bumpkin. Conversely, Hrithik could have easily fitted into Akshay’s role in Siingh is King and would have carried it off with even more aplomb.
2. Could Akshay have even dared to take on Hrithik’s role in Koi Mil Gaya? Such a role would have been absolutely impossible for him.
3. Could Akshay have matches Amir’s passion and perfectionism in Taare Zameen Par and Lagaan? If he was the teacher in Taare Zameen Par, would the dyslexic child ever have improved?
MY POINT: Akshay, Shahrukh and Salman are NO MATCH for Hrithik and Amir. Not only are Hrithik and Amir good looking, not only do they bring in reasonable amounts at the box office, above all they CAN ACT, especially in difficult, challenging roles. They can show emotion, passion, anger very effectively, and are also good at romance and sizzling up the screen.
Please do not be fickle and shed jealousy and appreciate talent because that is what has made India great over the centuries. True talents MUST be appreciated. Akshay, Shahrukh and Salman have just been lucky. They possess no true talent. They feed off the lack of intellegence in the viewing public. In order words, they count on people being fickle. And so far, they have succeeded. That is why I implore the viewing public: Become more demanding in the recognition and appreciation of true talent, otherwise India will lose its credibility as a land of genius.
Here is my list [with all due respect to Indicine], keeping only true talent and potential in mind:
1. Hrithik Roshan
2. Amir Khan
3. Sanjay Dutt
4. Ajay Devgan
5. Shahid Kapur/ Saif Ali Khan
Even in Comedy, Akshay does not match up to the true comic geniuses such as Mehmood, O P Ralhan, Asrani, Jonny Walker, Jagdip etc. IF we talk about this era, the only comedians I feel have potential are Arshad Warsi and Javed Jaffrey.
I do not intend to offend fans of Akshay, Shahrukh etc but the truth needs to be told. Akshay, Shahrukh, Salman have got good karma and have been lucky in their careers. Same goes for Katrina Kaif. But if put under a microscope, they have very limited acting ability and cannot match up to the true actors of today who are Hrithik and Amir.
I hope this is kept in mind when this year’s awards are being decided upon. Box office success should only carry five percent weight in the allocation of awards.
Punjabi Sher: (September 7, 2008 at 9:10 pm)
So Dr R.C Patel!!!!!!!! Sir……………..Akshay doesnt have any talent. Oh my god! Akshay has done various roles which are realy differant frm others. For ex………. Romantic role in namestey London, Great doctors role in bhool bulaiya, A real punjabi looking guy in singh is kinng. And see his previous movies like….
A willian in ajanabi, A blind man in aakhein. Akshay is real talent. He can do all types of roles. And now talk about your Hritik. He is a good Actor but he has done most of the hit movies with his father only. And look his hits they all are with the big directors Like….. Koi Mil gaya, Krish, Kabhi kushi Kabhi Gum, Dhoom 2(a multistarer)………on the other hand. Akshay has done work woth small actors like vipul shah etc. He has done movies alone and maked them hit like….bhool bulaiya, Welcome, Namstey London, Singh is kinng etc.
Hritik has done many flop movies after his first movie.. He has given hits only with his dad and with other big stars. So Akshay is a great actor and a Great human being also. He is a great comedian. His comic tyming is perfect. Look his movies like. Hera pheri, Phier hera pheri, Bhool bulaiya, Hey baby, Singh is kinng,Welcome,Bhagam bhag………..Sir……..Akshay is a gift given by god to the bollywood. He has not came in bollywood through his fathers or by any big name………He came with his own. Not like Hritk……
So Sir………give me answer who is better??????? IM WAITING FOR UR RESPONSE!!!!!!!
Dr. R. C. Patel: (September 7, 2008 at 11:05 pm)
It is obvious that I have upset you, Punjabi Sher. You obviously have a great liking for Akshay Kumar and I respect that. My intention was not to hurt you but the truth can be bitter. And I once again reiterate that although Hrithik appears to be the proverbial golden boy, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he has not used his prestigious background as a shield whatsoever. He has oodles of talent and that is unquestionable. Him working for his father is a sign of loyalty. Myself, I never look at what banners a film has been produced under. I just look at the final product on the screen and make my judgements accordingly. I have seen all of Hrithik’s films and I have seen all of Akshays films to date. It is without a doubt Hrithik is a true actor whereas Akshay is a mediocre actor. Anybody else could have fit into Akshay’s roles effortlessly. Considering how long he has been around in this industry [remember Ye Dil Lagi in 1991?] he should have attempted a variety of roles by now. Unfortunately most of these have come across as rather ordinary. By ordinary I mean, anyone else could have done the same role without blinking an eyelid. No wonder Shahrukh Khan quickly overtook him and rose to superstardom. I hope you now understand that my arguement has substance. Akshay should not be named top actor just based on his box office successes. Based on ACTING ABILITY, he cannot even appear in the top ten. Im sorry, sir, but that is the bitter truth.
Talking about Akshay’s box office successes [despite giving ordinary performances ] a big part of this is due to his cassanova nature in his personal life. If the press is to be believed he has had so many flings despite being a married man. This quality is attractive to the world’s large population of single women and also men find this attitude “cool” and “macho”. Hrithik got married immediately after his first film and by all accounts was set to be a faithful husband [which he is to date] that is why his romantic films after Kaho na pyar hai started flopping, because to most women he had become unavailable and they felt it was not fair. But his acting prowess soon corrected this situation and started drawing the crowds back towards him again.
All these factors put together make it abundantly clear that Hrithik deserves a spot on the top list whereas Akshay does not.

Dr. R.C. Patel:
I have decide not to write any more comments in this website defending Shahrukh or Hrithik or even express my opinion in any other pages ’cause some people love only to attack and write against what u mention even if u r right, and they (insist) that they are right even if u write pages on this website explaining everything ( they’d never agree with you) but the main purpose for writing is for other people to read and decide and not to try to convince only few of the commentators.
I liked your comment, therefore I’m writing now just to thank u as u r the first commentator who really knows how to analyze everything correctly and fair in your evaluation for best actors, although I don’t agree with u about Shahrukh, as Shahrukh is very talented ( but in some specific roles, romantic & comedy) and Shahrukh is faithful too for his wife and I never heard any thing bad about him so far except on this website as lots of people try to spoil his image and just want to dump him no matter what!!
I don’t want to have more discussion with others on this page anymore as I’ve had enough of hearing their bad language which (really) gave me a very bad impression about some Indians who never respect other nationalities point of views and they just (attack, swear and say very bad things!!)
So this is only to thank u, and God bless you Dr. Patel, Hrithik really deserves to be considered as number one as he (raised ) bollywood to the top so did Aamir with his TZP. And I like Ajay Devgan, admired him in ( The Legend of Baghat Singh)
Suniel: (September 8, 2008 at 2:42 am)
Fathiyaji….. Pls dont stop writing here
I luv reading your comments even if sometimes i dont agree with what you say. what you write is very informative and your views are very different from the way we Indians see things.
So i request you to ignore others and write what you feel like. Pls take my request
Suniel: (September 8, 2008 at 2:48 am)
About the discussion going on. Hrithik deserves the top place. I love his roles and his performances in all his movies. Even in his crap movies Aap Mujhe and Mujshe Dosti Karogi he did a splendid job.
Akshay is a average actor. Aamir, Hrithik and SRK are the best acting stars we have today. Obviously actors like Naseerudin Shah and Amitabh Bachchan are miles ahead but they not big stars today.
If you take awards Hrithik has won 3 Filmfares for best actor in 7 years. SRK has won 7 in 17 years. Aamir i think has won 3 in 19 years. Has Akshay even won one Best actor award? I dont think he will ever win in the popular category
Fathiya: (September 8, 2008 at 6:37 am)
Suniel: Thanks brother, that was my purpose of visitng your websites, Indian’s websites to tell all of u: people..there is someone who thinks differently ( and I think I’m the only one who’s not indian here, sharing her opinion with u all) but the problem, as I mentioned earlier, that people here want me to be like a ( parrot) if they say yes.. I have to say (yes) if they say no ( I’ve to say no!!) and when I say something different, they attack, I never mind if people disagree with me because we are all different in the way we think, but when they exceed their limits, and try to hurt, abuse with their dirty filthy tongue, that’s not what I can tolerate, that they disgrace my name and say things which I’m ashamed of even to say or mention it on this website!! Indian people in our country are different, I never met any Indian in my country who ever said these dirty words, never.
I’ll give it a try just because u asked me, and about Akshay Kumar, believe me.. I never liked Akshay Kumar or considered him as a big actor and 3 out of 5 movies he did last year and this year : Welcome, Bhool Bulaiya & Heyy Baby he was just a part of the movie and his acting in Namaste London was just normal, nothing special only in Singh is Kinng he did a good job as a comedian, and I mentioned his name at number (3) in this page, just to avoid these people, lie to them and make them.. happy!! Doesn’t this what they want?!! So I did it. Akshay is a good actor but can’t be considered as one of the top 5, but one of the top 10 only, that’s my opinion and I agree with Dr. R.C. Patel about Akshay, but Shahrukh ( I just love him very very much) It really hurt me when I read some people’s comments, saying that Shahrukh is bad and a mean actor and he is not. Shahrukh, as he’s a good human being, can’t even act good in villain roles! ( he fitted only in his role in Asoka) believe me.. when I watched his movie (Don) I started to laugh because he can’t be a bad guy, he can’t act as a bad guy! that’s shahrukh, so good in a way that he can’t be even bad on the screen. He did Darr & Anjam, good movies but he doesn’t fit in these kind of roles ( exactly like Dilip Kumar, they both got the same face, good peacful faces which reflects their good soul.
And a word to some commentators: Just shame on u people.. u got someone like shahrukh which u must be proud of and u all try to dump him!! ( I just wished if we had some of our local actors in Gulf Arabia or Middle East who is similar to shahrukh but we will never ever have, shahrukh is one and only in this world and u all will never have any duplicate of him in future, so value him, love him, respect him, that’s my wish)
Fathiya: (September 8, 2008 at 3:20 pm)
Syed: thanks for the greeting, but time is coming, and it will prove everything, if Shahrukh will remain in his position or Akshay wiil be, the next King of Bollywood, it’s not u or me who will decide, we just express our opinion about actors and their movies and nothing else, other people will decide, I assume!
Kalyan: (September 8, 2008 at 6:45 pm)
Oh,thanks Indicine ^_^ and i hope Akki gets a solo blockbuster ^^!
Fathiya: (September 8, 2008 at 6:50 pm)
And Sayed: we rank actors according to us, to our favourites, I can say that I consider Saif Ali Khan a better actor than Akshay because I see his performance on the screen better, even if Akshay’s movies are some hit movies and saif Saif did only one movie this year which is (Race) and (Omkara) last year and he was just brilliant in the negative role he played in Omkara (and he won an award for it) that’s my opinion.
The King of Bollywood must be ( perfect) just like a beauty contest, e.g. Miss India or Miss World, the judges never select a girl who was alcoholic, or addicted to drugs, means have a bad reputation, she must have the inner and the outer beauty and must be smart too. So the King of Bollywood must be the same, in my opinion, must be a perrect actor, as per the following:
1) He must be one of the best top actors in his performance, acting skills
2) He must be the best in his look ( and no one is as handsome as Hrithik in bollywood) and maybe age matters too, I don’t know, as Hrithik is the youngest among the other four.
3) He must have done for the past 5 years some best movies
4) He must be a loveable actor, have a good reputation, and pulls the audience to the box office
Good movies win at the box office, not because of the actor’s performance only, but because of many reasons, the directors and procuders, the script, the choreographer, the music, etc. as well as the hero/heroine’s performance. For example, the movie Devdas, did it win because of Aishwaiya’s acting or because of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s hard work on this movie? If the movie in direction and production wasn’t good, and flopped at the box office, did we have the right to blame Aishawariya for that or the director, and would have said: Oh.. Aish didn’t do a good job.. oh.. Shahrukh’s acting wasn’t so good in the movie!
Another example: when workers are building your house, and it came out perfect, beautiful, so the credit would go to the workers who mixed some water with the cement and started working, following only the archetature’s instructions or would go to the architecture himself??
Suniel: (September 8, 2008 at 9:26 pm)
Thanks for replying Fathiyaji :D Nice to read your comments they are very very informative. Dont try to make others happy, do they try to make you happy? Write what you feel like
Back on topic…. SRK is a good actor he has proved it in films like Chak De India and Devdas in the last few years but i really find him a bit mean. Matlabi sorts. He only sees his benefit in everything he does. He is faithful to his wife, great father but still to the rest of the world to his old friends he doesnt care much about them. I dont think he respects elders as well. He smokes in public which makes a negative impression on his young fans.
Akshay is a very good human being too. He doesnt smoke or drink doesnt have any bad habit and so far very faithful to his wife after marriage.
Punjabi Sher: (September 8, 2008 at 9:37 pm)
Dr R.C Patel!!!!!!!!!! Why u are saying that akshay doesnt have the talent of acting and he is only at no.1 spot because of his extramarital affairs. This cant be a fair reason behing the success. Salman also have many affairs with the grls but he is not at that no.1 Spot. Akshay is a great actor. Im not comparing hritk with akshay………..I also like Hritk but akshay is more talented actor. He can do all types roles. And akshay is one of those actor who doesnt do comment on anybody and he hardly came in any case like salman or sanjay…………Sir he is a great human being. He himself says that im not a king but he is a real king of bollywood………………U have said that he is not even able to come in top 10……….How u can say that.he has proved everything to us……….A great actor, comedian, action star………….And at last i thinks that he is great………And i also thinks that choices may be differant but it cant be differant that we two are having like u are saying akshay is not even in top 10 and im saying that he is no .1………
Dr. R. C. Patel: (September 8, 2008 at 9:59 pm)
Dear Fathiya,
I am glad you took my comments in a positive light and thank you for your kind words.
Believe me, upto Kuch kuch hota hai, I too was a big fan of SRK. However, and I am not exaggerating, thereafter something went badly wrong with him. From what I could analyse, his success went completely to his head. This had two consequences:
a] He compromised on quality and we therefore saw lack luster performances in Devdas, Paheli, Kal ho na ho, Khabi Alvida Na Khena, Don and Om shanti Om. It seems in all these roles his arrogance came shining through and that the directors just left it upto him to do as he wanted with the roles. The result was quite a bit of ham-acting and shallow portrayal of emotions. This was not so with Swades. Ashutosh Gowarikar made him tow the line and so he proved that he could be a good actor.
b] He started acting disrespectfully with his peers, making brash comments about them openly and indulging in under handed tactics to keep his position intact and to keep others away from encroaching on his territory. This turned the industry against him with powerful peers such as Amitabh Bachhan and Sanjay Leela Bansali rallying against him. If as you say, he is a good person then why did he behave so assininely at last year’s Filmfare Awards function? Why did he make such reckless comments about Amitabh as the original don? Why did he involve himself in such a well publicised tiff with Salman Khan? If only SRK had treated his God-given success with dignity and humility there would be no one who could touch him for years to come, but now do you see – Youngsters like Hrithik who dont indulge in Bollywood politics have succeeded in stealing the limelight from SRK.
I hope you now understand why I have not rated SRK in the top five in my list above. Nevertheless he is lucky to have fans like you, so keep up the enthusiasm!
