Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle
There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.
So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.
The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.
Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.
So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!
Here are the number.
5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.
- Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
- Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
- Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
- Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
- Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster
Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.
4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.
- Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
- Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
- Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
- Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
- Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.
3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.
- Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
- Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
- Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
- Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
- Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster
Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.
2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.
- Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
- Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
- Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
- Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
- Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit
Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.
1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.
Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.
- Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
- Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
- Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
- Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
- Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit
Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.
The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.
We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.
Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.
Lets discuss below, if you dont agree with the article please post a comment on why. Thank you for reading.

I agree with you, Mr. Ashok. 100%.
To Aryan,
Do you really think it’s fair for Akshay to ask for 72 crores when we all know that the best movies only make about 80 – 90 crores??? What will be left for the other members of the cast and crew? Does he care? Is this humility?? Even the public voted that it is unfair!
It is said that true charity is “when your right hand does charity and even your left hand doesnt come to know about it”. So yes, yes it IS a publicity stunt and I cant believe that you are naive enough to believe otherwise and say that because the newspapers report of his charity, he is humble?? Do you even know the meaning of humility?? And all celebrities do their bits for society because it casts them in a positive light and they wish to encourage their fanbase to imitate such acts. BUT that is not really a sign of humility!
BTW pride always comes before a fall. Take Himesh for example. What a hype there was about him! But then he insisted that he would only sing and direct music for movies he acts in. And what happened to all that hype? POOF!!
So therefore, if Akshay asks for 72 crores, just how many producers and directors will be willing to pay him that much. It is a simple case of Economics. When the price goes up, the demand comes hurtling down!! [Especially for ORDINARY goods] ;)

ABD & Dr. Patel,
U both r right in what u mentioned. I saw an interview for Hrithik where he says that he feels more comfortable to work in his dad’s home production movies, as he can discuss, argue with the director/producter of his movie which is his dad, but while working with other directors, he’s has to show respect to what they ask him to ( If we put ourselves in his shoes, we’d the same). Hrithik cares about his success more than earning money, that’s his character ( I think Shahrukh too) but.. there’s a point that all these celebrities not in a need of money when they (raise) their price, it’s just that whey they get the highest paid, it indicates that they are the best.. that’s all, therefore, Akshay raised his price as he knows now that he is at number 1 position, as everyone say so.. that he is number 1.
So.. If Akshay would earn 70 or more crores for a movie, the other actors feel lower and that it’s a big gap in what they earn and what Akshay would earn.. and I’m sure that most of them will raise their price according to Akshay, if Shahrukh used to earn 13 or 18 crores definitely he’d ask for double or more, that’s natural, all of u ppl r working and in any istitution u work, if some staff who do the same job as u r doing get this much higher increament in his monthly salary, all of u would ask for the same.. it’s not because of jealousy.. no.. it’s because u feel that u r not less than this employee in your performance, loyality, harding wroking, etc.
Ashok: I do agree with u abt the crappy movies Welcome, Tashan, but Heyy Baby wasn’t bad, it was funny for ppl who wants only comedy movies and don’t care about the script and don’t like serious movies ( millions of audiences want just to laugh and nothing else) and SIK also was a funny movie and Akshay did a good job except some scenes. Bhool Bulaiyya was a thriller movie but had some comedy scenes in it ( and Akshay himslef said this during an interview)

ABD i like the small jealous in u wen u write” [Especially for ORDINARY goods] ;) ”
ABD u r mistaken 72 Cr will not b paid to AK as his fee it includes fees + territory business +overseas share + % share of profits as a fee he might b getting max 30-35 cr n the 80-90 cr wat u r talking is only India boxoffice business doesnot include oversea, television, home video, music business…
n moreover that piece of news is denied by AK himself…n abt the bihar news it was told by a Director Prakash Jha who hails frm Bihar n i dont think AK has done any film wit Prakash Jha n moreover if somebody says XYZ has paid 25+lakhs it will b cross checked bcoz its not a small amount…
he is jus returning the favour to the plp of Bihar since most of his movies including Tashan got good response in Bihar…
So dont worry abt the numbers….and abt Himesh i knw he declined to compose for “Welcome” midway which was not ethical lets leave the person to fight it out in the industry…
Fathiya very nice very good comment on the hw the business runs for Actors/actresses…

Dear Fathiya, you should not sit on the fence, it does not suit you. Take a stand, madame! I know it is Eid and you are feeling particularly charitable, that is because u are a good human being, but the truth must stand in all its glory and therefore you must agree and change your stand that Heyy Baby, Bhool Bhulaiya and Singh is King are all C grade films. Not worthy of any discussion. Eid mubarak to you and all your relatives and friends. And from tomorrow when the stomachs are full we will think better. Inshallah.

To all my friends and foes on this forum,
I wish you all prosperity, success, humility and good sense on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. And I feel on this happy occasion we need a change of subject. Enough about Akshay, SRK, Hrithik etc. Let’s be nostalgic and go back in time to the Golden Era of films. Here is my list of my top ten oldies. I would be happy if my friends and foes on this forum would also share their fond oldie memories with me too.
10. Jwar Bhata [Dharmendra, Saira Banu]
9. Aakir Kyon? [Rajesh Khanna, Smitha Patil, Rakesh Roshan]
8. Mera Saaya [Sunil Dutt, Sadhna]
7. Aradhna [Rajesh Kanna, Sharmila Tagore]
6. Bawarchi [Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachhan]
5. Dushman [Rajesh Khanna, Meena Kumari, Mumtaz]
4. Satyakaam [Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore]
3. Mother India [Nargis, Sunil Dutt]
2. Amar Prem [Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore]
1. Guide [Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman]
Each of these films had a unique story, superb acting, wonderful songs, and strong direction. Ofcourse when we talk about the Golden Era and oldies, the list is endless. But these are my favourites. Which ones are yours?
[Of late we have been arguing so much about Hrithik, Akkie, SRK etc This has become mentally exhausting which is why I am introducing a change of subject for today only, as it is Eid, which is a time for nostalgia and fond memories of the past]

ABD: Thanks ABD but I’m saying what I felt.. honestly.. Heyy Baby & SIK weren’t bad movies.. they weren’t a great movies but – at least – I didn’t get bored while watching them and quite enjoyed them, I didn’t feel that they were worthless movies.. I didn’t say to myself: what a crap as I said while watching Welcome, JTYJN, Golmaal, and so many others ( but I don’t understand why lots of ppl consider Akshay’s movie Namaste London as a great one!! it was good although I didn’t like Akshay’s acting in one scene in the movie but not a great one and wasn’t Akshay’s best performance) …but wait.. holdon ABD.. why do u consider Bhool Bhulaiya as a 3rd class movie?!! I hear this for 1st time as everyone loved this movie, I don’t agree with u in this, the movie was so good and didn’t lack anything, the direction, prodcution, script, music, all the cast’s performance ( I don’t know why u didn’t like it!)
About the old movies, my list would be as follows:
10.Aap ki Kasam (Rajesh Khanna & Mumtaz)
9. Amar Prem
8.Masoom
7. Bahavna
6. Arth
5. Satyam Shivam Sundaram
4. Mother India
3. Guide
2. Aradhana
1. Sangam
( And 2 of Amitab Bachan’s movie (Sharabi & Khuda Ghawa) but these movies aren’t so old, maybe in the last quarter of 80’s I assume)

ABD: I forgot to add to my list 2 nice old movies which I loved and they were also blockbuster movies ( Do Raaste for Rajesh Khanna and Jab Jab Phool Keli for Shashi Kapoor.
Do Raaste at no 5
Jab Jab Phool Keli at no. 6 then the rest
Virender: (October 3, 2008 at 7:35 am)
Without being biased.. I totally agree with the list. Hrithik is very underrated by the media. He has been highly succcessful at such a young age. His contemporaries like Abhishek Bachan, Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Arjun Rampal, Vivek Oberoi have almost faded away.
Nice List Indicine. Very informative good read

Punjabi Sher: (October 6, 2008 at 11:45 am)
I will not leave u untill u dont agree that akshay is no.1……………………Agree kar lo………….i will leave u.

y do i say he is humble bcoz he says wat he believes…wen a news channel said u rocked in the song “Hare Ram Hare Krishna” he quickly replied saying the music was such that even if u had done it u wud hav rocked….now u guys talk only abt his fees hw many of u knw that he has taken complete responsibility of restructuring a villiage in Bihar after it was hit by Cyclone…
now u guys wil say its a media stunt to gain PR…
Wel for me he was not responsible until he got married and post 2000 he has done diff types of movies and comedy made him famous so he is typecasted earlier a Action Hero now a comedian and in between all these the movies like “Waqt”, “Ankhaee”,”Khakee”,”Jaanwar”,”Sangharsh”,”Namastey London”,”Bhool Bhulaiya”,”Dhadkan”,”Aitraaz”, “Ajnabee”,”Ek Ristha(Flop)” were not out n out comedies but were from small production house…interested plp can checkout that critics were happy wit it….
im Ok wit wat Hrithik has acheived but to b a heavyweight champ he shud take risks churn out more films make them successful…but lets accept the fact that AK is a Hit machine and u cannot giv hit again n again if u r not a good actor
