Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle

There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.

So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.

Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.

So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!

Here are the number.

5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.

  • Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
  • Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
  • Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
  • Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
  • Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster

Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.

4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.

  • Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
  • Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
  • Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
  • Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
  • Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster

Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.

3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.

  • Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
  • Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
  • Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
  • Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
  • Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster

Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.

2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.

  • Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
  • Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
  • Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
  • Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit

Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.

1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.

  • Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
  • Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
  • Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
  • Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
  • Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit

Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.

The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.

We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.

Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.

Lets discuss below, if you dont agree with the article please post a comment on why. Thank you for reading.

Well Punjabi Sher.. I’m not forcing Aziza to love shahrukh.. I think if other people read my comment for Aziza on this page, they’d understand that I’m not forcing her to love shahrukh.. except u!!

My question to her was very clear as I asked her the reason for hating shahrukh and not why she doesn’t love him!! when we hate someone.. there must be a reason.. same as when we love someone.. so.. if I ask u the same q: why do u love Akshay Kumar.. u definitely know why, and if I ask u: why do u hate shahrukh.. also u know the reason.. don’t u know the difference between the 2 questions?!!!

So Aziza might hv her reasons for hating shahrukh, therefore, I wanted to find out from her ( and not from u!!) u r the one who wants every human in this world to love your Akki.. but u can’t do it ( even if the news is right and he’s really no. 1 now) but this doesn’t mean that everyone in this world love him just because he is at number (1)! if 90% of ppl do but there r still 10% – or maybe more – I don’t have the statisitc to confirm the no. of ppl who don’t ( and I’m not any of those, I don’t love him and I don’t hate him too.. for me he’s just a good actor same as Seif, Sanjay, Anil and he’s not a “uniqe”

The only “unique” and “extraordinary” actors are 2 in bollywood: Shahrukh & Hrithik, and some newcomers might be also in future!

Punjabi Sher:  (September 27, 2008 at 8:49 pm)

Fathiya……………my dear…………Why u always keep shahrukha and hritik above than akshay? Why do u think that there are only two unique actors in the bollywood? Ur thinking is wrong…………….change it.

Fathiya:  (September 27, 2008 at 9:13 pm)

Raja Hussein: If u hate shahrukh because of what u said then u r a person who doesn’t know how to distinguish, while watching any interview, when the man is serious and when he’s joking!! Everyone, even on other websites know that shahrukh (always) jokes, and he said that as a humour!! don’t u understand all this.. when someone tries to be funny and make ppl laugh and when he’s serious?!! ( u just want to misunderstand him because u hate him.. that’s all.. I understand it.. it’s not only u.. so many ppl does even on other websites!!)

What u said about me.. that I like shahurkh because he is muslim and u closed your eyes on all my previous comments which r not less than a hundred on this web (proves) that u r all sick people and don’t want to understand what we say!!! When I asked Aziza a question.. why does she hate shahrukh, and mentioned that she’s (muslim) that didn’t mean the following: Why Aziza don’t u love Shahruk.. you r a muslim?!!!! U ppl understood it this way which is wrong!! Saying to Aziza that she’s a muslim means that shouldn’t believe in gossip, rumours and repeat what other people says ’cause God will punish us as we might hurt an innocent guy who did nothing of the stuff people say.. it’s a great sin in Islam.

DID U UNDERSTAND MY POINT AND MY QUESTION FOR AZIZA NOW?!! IF U DIDN’T SO FAR.. THEN DON’T EXPECT ANY ANSWER FROM ME IF U POSTED SOME OTHER OCMMENTS.

Fathiya:  (September 27, 2008 at 9:24 pm)

For u my thinking is wrong.. for me it’s right.. and for me your thinking is wrong to value and worship Akshay because he’s just ordinary.. killed himself for years to reach the top, and suceeded after 17 years only!! So he’s not so talented, but became after long years of working hard and gaining experience.. a talented actor is perfect from the starting.. therefore I consider SRK & Hrithik outstanding.. extraordinary actors..

And.. Ranbir Kapoor too!

Fathiya:  (September 28, 2008 at 4:43 pm)

Do u want me to reply to u by saying: You shut up Punjabi Sher? Oh.. u made me (angry) by your words!!!!

You never understand what’s written?!! Ranbir, as a newcomer, he’s so good, so he’ll grow big big big in future.. we can say who’s talented and who’s not from their first movies.. don’t u get my points dear P. Sher?!!!!

And.. why do u think that Yash Raj assigned shahrukh for their films?! Akshay existed in 1991 and Shahrukh in 1992, means shahrukh was in the industry one year later, Akshay is older just one year.. Doesn’t this prove that SRK was more successful than Akshay and more popular and his movies were bigger hits in that time?!!! Why didn’t Yash Raj take Akshay for their movies, if Akshay was soooo good as u say, and thatttt successful after 5 years or working?!! Directors normally select the one who (pulls) the audienece towards him, the one who makes more money, the one who got more admirers in this world and it was (always) Shahrukh.. u can’t deny this fact because shahrukh succeeded and won the title ( King of Bollywood) and he remained in his position for almost 10 years.. can u deny this fact?

Answer yourself and not me!!

Punjabi Sher:  (September 28, 2008 at 5:44 pm)

I agree that srk has remained the tittle of king for almost 10 yrs but Now u can deny that akshay is a new king?????????????????????.. …………………… This is not right that directors take actors who pull the crowd. This is a luck and srk is more lucky in this than akshay……………..And u also lied about ranbir kapoor…U said in ur previous comment that ranbir kapoor is a extraoridnary actor……………..And now ur saying that I have said for a youngster. U urself dont know that wat to speak…………..I was also angry when u said akshay is not extraoridnary and srk, hritik.ranbeir are…………………..Now give answer to urself.

Fathiya:  (September 28, 2008 at 7:11 pm)

U said: “this is not right directors take the actor who pull the crowd” that’s what u mentioned.. it was shahrukh, and now it’s Akshay ( I don’t deny it) so akshay pulls the crowd now.. do u consider the directors r wrong?! Dear.. this is only business.. why do u think they make movies then?!! They go for the actor who is doing a good sale, who’s in a demand and ppl want to watch his movies.. and now it’s Akshay, whether he’s so talented or not, he’s making a good sale now and will let the directors sleep well at night as they guarantee him.. that he’ll make crores for their movies!

I said it about Ranbir because he’s ( so talented) drew all the attention to him after 2 movies only, therefore I consider him (extraordinary) and that’s gifts from God.. some ppl r gifted, lucky and some aren’t.. lots of actresses in bollywood r talented but aren’t (loveable) can’t win the audience as they lack strong presence on the screen, therefore, and after a while, they vanish, leave bollywood.

So if Akshay wasn’t so lucky, couldn’t draw a big attention when he joined bollywood and succeeded only now, after all these years, that was his fate, destiny, what could he do about it, and it’s not only Akshay.. many actors couldn’t reach the top.. example.. Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Khanna and now Abhishek Pachan.. let us talk about Abhishek who’s his dad is the God of Indian Cinema.. he worked in Yash Raj films, he’s in the industry more than 10 years.. so.. did he reach the top?! Could he win the title “King of Bollywood”? No.. why do u think he couldn’t?? He’s cute, tall, funny & performing well, not a bad actor, and he got lots of big directors around him.. why?
Simply because he is not that special.. that’s all.

ABD:  (September 28, 2008 at 8:46 pm)

Akshay is really just a comedian. His “successful” movies have been of the comedy genre only. He hasnt received accolades for the serious roles he has played, that is because he’s mediocre in that category. The question is, should an actor who seems to be only good in one genre be crowned the King of Bollywood?? All this Akshay-hype will be short-lived, mark my words. As was the Himesh Reshmiya-mania – short-lived with a capital S.
Talent leaves a lasting impression, especially the all-rounded kind. For example, Amir Khan. He can pull off anything. His comedy in Rang de Basanti was entertaining, and not the kind that makes your skin crawl. In Fanaa, he portrayed emotions such as anger and guilt superbly. I’d like to see Akshay try his hand at that. I’m sure it would come off as rather “fake” and unconvincing. He’d ham it! SRK too. Ham, ham, ham. All that stammering and shaking while crying, really it’s too overdone.
But it’s still left to be seen whether Amir can do what Hrithik did in Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish. And maybe even Dhoom 2. Hrithik goes an extra mile when it comes to giving it all to his roles. It looks so effortless. That scene in Mission Kashmir when he learnt of his mother’s death (the woman who had adopted him) the way he fell to the floor, devastated and howling with pain, has left an everlasting impression. The role of the father he played in Krrish, I dont think anybody can [not even Amitabh] could do that.
The “loser” or rather the care-free bum-along boy he played in Lakshya was too convincing. And the role of the retarded boy in Koi Mil Gaya, that was out-of-this-world! Just look at the variety of the roles he has played to date, the challenging and different performances. I cant believe I forgot to mention his role in Jodha Akbar too, the way he portrayed the role of Akhbar in such majesty, how awesome is that!! He seriously should win the award for Best Actor for this film otherwise there is something very wrong with the industry.
Now we’ve just got to see if he can play Amir’s role in Lagaan and Akshay’s in Singh is King. But I honestly think he can do all sorts of roles, he’s very versatile and this was very much evident in Dhoom 2 when he donned all those many disguises and pulled them off excellently.
Those who disagree with me arent being truthful with themselves. Appreciate Hrithik, dont hate on him, just because he’s beautiful, successful and very very talented.

ABD:  (September 28, 2008 at 9:17 pm)

Jus to add: It’s very rare that God gives somebody everything – beauty, brains, talent, wealth and humility, loyalty and faithfulness also. Hrithik has it all. Hrithik just has it all. Apart from being a superb actor and dancer, he is a dotting son to his parents, a faithful husband to his beautiful wife, a loving father to his children and a humble, loyal human being. He keeps out of the media and the limelight and avoids the soul-corroding politics of Bollywood. To summarise, he just has it all, which this world cannot digest. Such people are always hated. And the world tries its best to put them down. But the more infamous he becomes, the more it is evident that he IS the best. People can try to be derogatory about him all they want but such people are under the grace of God and will continue progressing. So haha to Hrithik’s down-putters!

sumit singh:  (September 28, 2008 at 11:58 pm)

my love to all of my friends abdur, raj for suporting our most favourate actor AKSHAY KUMAR and i must say AKSHAY will be the real king forever.

Fathiya:  (September 29, 2008 at 2:34 am)

ABD: You are 100% right.. therefore I said earlier to Punjabi Sher that there’re 2 unique, extraordinay actors in bollywood: Shahrukh & Hrithik.. Hrithik for what u mentioned and what I mentioned in my earlier comments, Shahrukh because of his (charm & strong presenece) each one of them got a different strength, in a different way..and to be a unique, extra-ordinary u must have some sort of strengths which others don’t have and it’s not necessary that all the actors must have the same strenght.. no. Hrithik can play a superman, a spiderman, a batman because of his height, body, his look, but we can’t ask Shahrukh to play these roles, simply because he doesn’t fit in such roles, and Hrithik can’t be a comedian or make u laugh like shahrukh does… I remember a scene in the movie ( Hum Tumare Hai Sanam) where shahrukh is drunk, sad because madhuri, his wife, left him.. the scene where he walks in the house and talks to a horse statue.. this scene made me laugh so much, that’s only an example as shahrukh played many funny scenes in his movies, but neither Hrithik nor Akshay can make us laugh this way.. Akshay is doing comedy movies, he says some funny dialogues, but he can’t make u laugh with his body language as Shahrukh does.

This is shahrukh’s strenght, funny and romantic.

Aryan:  (September 29, 2008 at 9:50 am)

looks like i cannot keep out of this discussion…
ABD: Abinav Bindra(Won the gold medal for India) has great talent but it only paid off bcoz of hardwork and fantastic facilities provided by his father in the backyard of his house. Remember this is the same guy who cudnot qualify in last Olympics.
Hrithik is a good human being listens to his parents but dont u think his father had a much vital role to play in his success(after a series of flops) dont u thnk Rakesh Roshan might hav given him the much needed inputs as a director wen he watched “Mujse Dosti Karoge”, for me he lost it thr completely. keep urself in thr and tell me wont u jus learn acting wit al the facilities provided to u…
AK had to borrow maney frm somebody to purchase a book on Acting leave alone going to acting schools
AK n SRK r the only actors who hav managed it single handedly…Im not sympathizing wit these actors
but some plp r just very lucky in thr life Hrithik knws it n he respects it AB Jr knws it that is y these guys dont overboard on nything

Fathiya says Ranbir is good, lady if Kapoor was not after Ranbir do u think Sanjay Leela Bhansali wud hav casted him…i feel….. Neil Nitin Mukesh to b a better actor compared 2 Ranbir…

Aryan:  (September 29, 2008 at 10:06 am)

n Aamir i guess u guys wil agree that he wont giv sarcastic comments or derogatory remarks, few days bac i watched him telling that he is happy for AK, he adds “his hardwork is finally paid off”
y am telling this…if AK has learned his lessons, i can c AK reaching grt8 heights bcoz now he has the all important money factor in his kitty…

Fathiya:  (September 29, 2008 at 1:16 pm)

Aryan: I know this fact, yes.. I worked for more than 25 years in different institutions, and how much u got experience, qualifications and certificates, no one would give u a chance to get a job, but when someone ( which u know) introduce u to the company, easily you’ll get the job.. that’s fact which we can’t deny, but there’s also another fact.. I will get the job.. but can I prove myself in the job given to me? Am I really qualified, talented, hard working and the institution would be happy for hiring me? Am I going to reach the top in my career? This is another question Aryan.. I will get the job easily.. yes.. but well ppl appreciate my work.. that’s another issue.

Ranbir Kapoor easily got the job, but proved himself and won the audience.. Neil Mukesh also got the job easily as his grandfather (Mukesh) was a famous singer, got a good look and talent, he also deserves to have a good future, but still early to say so ’cause he did only one movie and his acting was so good.

Ranbir did 2 movies and in the 2 of them, he proved himself as a good actor, this boy will reach the top.. I’m sure, not because of his background.. family because he’s what we see on the screen!

Fathiya:  (September 29, 2008 at 1:18 pm)

More to add: Aryan.. Memo.. Mithun’s son. why did he fail as an actor?!! His dad is a famous actor in India!! so ask yourslef this question!

Aryan:  (September 29, 2008 at 2:17 pm)

Fathiya, good that u talk abt making the most of the opportunities…i hav jus commented on u saying Ranbir has “extraordinary talent”, its too early 2 say abt Ranbir though i knw he’ll b still tried by producers as happened wit AB Jr. n abt Mithun’s son is considered wel i dont thnk he is a brand name in bollywood… in W.Bengal may b YES
n who said he has failed he is only one film old, n i dont thnk BAH is a HIT.
these guys will b tested again n again bcoz they hav a brand name attached 2 them…
who makes the most of it will b the winner thats al.
eg: Kareena kapoor took so many yrs to prove it in “Jab We Met” but still was the highest paid actress i guess

Fathiya:  (September 29, 2008 at 2:34 pm)

Aryan: BAH is a simi hit. About Memoh: If ppl would accept some newcomers, that’s also an issue: just put the 3 above actor’s names, including one more, in a line as follows:

RANBIR KAPOOR.. NEIL MUKESH… MEMOH ( AND HARMAN BAWEJA) : Which one of these new actors we love to see them again on the screen??

As an audience, I would say 3 out of 4, the 3 above actors are very good and got all the qualificaton to be in films except (one) which is (Memoh) he got a zero qualification.. this is a fact ’cause his look is a zero, his voice is a zero, his dancing (in the trailer which I saw) is a zera and can’t be in films, can’t be an actor, for me.. he’s not applicable and I don’t know for others.

Aryan:  (September 29, 2008 at 2:55 pm)

Karan Johar had same thoughts abt AB Jr till Yuva happened… y alone him i thnk many had n still have…
my discussion is not abt who is good bcoz all r in the same league 1yr old n i htnk u dont like Imran Khan
i hope u hav same empathy towards Rajiv(Aamir fame) who was much better than ur list of future superstars…

Fathiya:  (September 29, 2008 at 3:53 pm)

Aryan: who is Rajiv? About Imran, I just forgot to add his name, u r wrong in yr conclusion, I do like him, I didn’t consider him a great actor from his 1st movie JTYJN but I think he’s done a good job in his new film: Kidnap.. Imran got a good future too, only Memoh.

Aryan:  (September 29, 2008 at 4:12 pm)

Fathiya this is wat happens wen u r not a starkid, i suggest u plz watch “Aaamir” released in June im not sure. i dont knw if DVD is released. Rajiv is the lead actor in the movie.
i hope the movie is atleast nominated for best Film/script category
Indicine Team plz provide the link to ur review on “Aaamir”
