Top 5 Actors in Bollywood – Box office battle

There has been a lot of discussion in the comments section as to who the Top 5 actors in Bollywood are at the moment. Most in the Singh Is King Box office collection topic were of the opinion that Akshay Kumar post Singh is King has gone past Shahrukh Khan as the King of Bollywood.

So we decided to do some research on the Top 5 actors in Bollywood and their last 5 movies. The actors included in the battle are Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The results were quite unexpected. A few things before we give you the numbers.

Some points to remember are, actors with more releases in recent times (Post 2006) have an advantage over actors whose movies released in say 2003. That is because of the mutliplexes that have come up all over the country and also the increase in the number of prints.

So Akshay Kumar has a much bigger advantage over Aamir Khan as Aamir’s 5th movie Dil Chahta Hai released in 2001, when there were hardly any multiplexes. Also dont forget the inflation!

Here are the number.

5. Salman Khan – Salman Khan is at Number 5. We havent taken God Tussi Great Ho into count as it has just released last week and its final gross is awaited. He mainly suffers because of Marigold, as it did less than 1 crore of business in India! Salman has just one Blockbuster i.e Partner.

  • Jaan-E-Mann (2006) – 27 crores – Flop
  • Babul (2006) – 17 crores – Flop
  • Saalam-e-Ishq (2007) – 24 crores – Flop
  • Partner (2007) – 62 crores – Blockbuster
  • Marigold (2007) – 1 crore – Disaster

Total – 131 crores
Average – 26.2 crores per movie.

4. Aamir Khan – Aamir Khan although at a huge disadvantage is at Number 4. Imagine if Dil Chahta Hai had released today? It would have grossed atleast a minimum of 50 crores at the box office. Still since his come back the perfectionist has 2 Superhits and 1 Blockbuster to his credit.

  • Dil Chahta Hai (2001) – 16 crores – Hit
  • Mangal Pandey (2005) – 29 crores – Average
  • Rang De Basanti (2006) – 51 crores – Super Hit
  • Fanaa (2006) – 53 crores – Super Hit
  • Taare Zameen Par (2007) – 61 crores – Blockbuster

Total – 210 crores
Average – 42 crores per movie.

3. Shahrukh Khan – Has been affected big time due to the failure of Paheli. It didnt even get a face saving opening at the box-office and did just 13 crores. Rest of his movies have done well. KANK and Don bearly managed to go on to be hits. Chak De and Om Shanti Om were blockbusters.

  • Paheli (2005) – 13 crores – Flop
  • Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) – 46 crores – Above Average to Hit
  • Don (2006) – 50 crores – Hit
  • Chak De India (2007) – 64 crores – Blockbuster
  • Om Shanti Om (2007) – 87 crores – Blockbuster

Total – 260 crores
Average – 52 crores per movie.

2. Akshay Kumar – Now this was a real toughie. But we decided to push Akshay Kumar down to second due to several reasons. He is the only star to not have a single solo ‘Blockbuster’ to his credit (Welcome was a multistarrer with Anil Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Nan Patekar). Although we have included Singh Is King, it has not completed its complete run at the boxoffice. We had to predict the total nett gross of Singh Is Kinng to 72 crores (44 crores in week one is confirmed + 18 crores in week 2 is also confirmed + 6 crores in week 3 and about 4 crores in the rest of the weeks is a prediction). The other reason for placing him at second is he is the only actor who has the advantage of every movie releasing Post – 2006. No release in the Pre multiplex era of India Cinema.

  • Heyy Babyy (2007) – 52 crores – Super hit
  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) – 54 crores – Super hit
  • Welcome (2007) – 76 crores – Blockbuster (Multistarrer)
  • Tashan (2008) – 31 crores – Flop
  • Singh Is King (2008) – 72 crores – Hit to Super hit

Total – 285 crores
Average – 57 crores per movie.

1. Hrithik Roshan – By far the youngest actor in the list, Hrithik Roshan by pure box office numbers of India, tops although by a very close margin. 2 solo blockbusters (KMG, Krrish), 1 multi star Blockbuster (Dhoom 2) and 1 Super hit (Jodha Akbar). His only failure in the last 4 years has been Lakshya which did average business at the boxoffice. A great comeback after about 6 failures in a row after Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Hrithik also has two movies pre 2006 which is a disadvantage.

  • Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 44 crores – Super Hit
  • Lakshya (2004) – 23 crores – Average
  • Krrish (2006) – 66 crores – Blockbuster
  • Dhoom 2 (2006) – 86 crores – Blockbuster
  • Jodhaa Akbar (2008) – 63 crores – Super Hit

Total – 282 crores
Average – 56.4 crores per movie.

The whole list might change when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Chandni Chowk To China release in December. SRK could make it to the top if Rab Ne works big time. How Chandni Chowk fares will also be interesting. Hrithik’s kites releases in the summer of 2009 and there is news that it could be sold for 100 crores if not more. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini too releases this year end and is expected to create boxoffice history.

We will post an update here after all the 3 movies; Rab Ne, Chandni Chowk and Ghajini release.

Note – These figures are only of how the movies fared at the Indian Box-office. Shahrukh Khan is the undisputed king of the overseas box-office. Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan come a close second and third.

Lets discuss below, if you dont agree with the article please post a comment on why. Thank you for reading.

Fathiya, bollywood was not the same 20 yrs bac…it has reached to more plp more cultures
oday plp r more open in thr thoughts, can i say going more hollywood way…
hollywood has more trash than bollywood u’ll find more plp jus 4 no reason taking media attention…

As far as good movies doing fine business in boxoffice is concerned i think its still fair…
producers who invest less and make good movies are getting thr dues though not huge amt but then if u invest less then ur expectation shud not b huge…
The movie must be saleable to get huge numbers…plp r more happy buying a ticket 4 Akki or SRk or top 5 in the list but play safe wen a Shreyas Talpade does it…
most of the actors r good director shud take out the best to make it memorable…it only possible if the character is grt8
simple eg Ledger(joker) of “The Dark Knight” fame he was no whr all these yrs one grt8 performance, i thnk he’ll b the frontrunner 4 the oscars, I feel sorry for the loss though.

jus to reply Fathiya’s comment on if guuide and Aradhana were to b released today take my word lady they wud have be superhits only few yrs bac we had Kabhi Khushi Khabhi Gham declared superhit which had moreemotional content take for VZ as example for a romantic story…good movies also work..

Fathiya:  (September 22, 2008 at 5:48 pm)

If Veer Zara worked only because of the big banner, Yash Chopra doing a movie after 7 years, promotion, the songs, Shahrukh himslef and the supporting actors Bigb And Hema Malini, and ofcourse with some spices in the movie, little comedy with romance, but if Veer Zarah was too serious, and wasn’t a Yash Chopra, I don’t think so, and KKKG was a big movie and had lots of comedy scenes beside the emotional scenes.

Guide & Araadhna didn’t have any comedy scenes at all, serious drama, romantic ( I’m sure, they’d never worked at present)

Aryan:  (September 22, 2008 at 8:12 pm)

dont tel me abt the starcast of Guide or Aradhana…one had the most stylish actor of those times while the ther had the blue superstar and as far as songs r concrened both the movies had fantastic songs and the script of the movie was brilliant…

Aryan, Fathiya and my other friends,
My back goes up when the time comes for awards and ratings and rankings. As the respectable Aryan says, this world is depressing with all its problems and pressures, and therefore entertaining films are in demand. Very true and very necessary, BUT the entertainers should be happy with their commercial success, pocket their money, and lead luxurious lives, period. They should not vie for awards, accolades, and rankings such as “No.1″. These belong only to those who have confirmed acting ability. That is the only point that I have been trying to make for so long. Entertaining films deserve box office success, especially in such times, but should be left out when it comes to awards and rankings. One has never seen Spiderman 3, or Get Smart, or any Eddie Murphy film vying for Oscars. The cast and crew of such films are happy enough with their millions. I hope my point is coming across clearly, and we shall not have to see the painful moment when an entertainer like Akshay Kumar walks away with Best Actor Award just because his films have been successful at the box office, and deserving actors such as Sanjay Dutt, Shreyas Talpade and Darshil Safary are ignored.
Best wishes to all of you.

Fathiya:  (September 23, 2008 at 4:44 pm)

Dr. R.C. Patel:

That’s the point, awards must be given to actors according to their (talents) capability of acting specially in difficult roles, and the actor’s performance is only a part of any successful movie as the actors only participate with the team to make any movie work (it’s just a team work and not an individual) that’s all, and as I mentioned earlier, it’s mainly the script, production & the direction including the special effects, cinematography, music, etc. So 50% of the credit for any successful movie would go for the “creators” and not for the actors.

Moreover, while evaluating any actor at any award functions, an important point must be noted too, that there’s an (easy job) and there’s a (difficult job) for actors to perform in any movie and according to the script, examples:

One successful movie which is JTYJN, a simple movie with a small budget, with an easy job for the actors

One flop movie which is Love Story 2050, a big movie with a big budget, with “difficult” job for the actors.

One movie won, and the other one failed, but while evaluating the talents of both actors: Imraan & Harman in the two movies, which one of them do u think really deserves the award as a debutant? Now u answer this question ( the question is only for the people who saw the 2 movies) and just forget about the success or the failure of the 2 movies at the box office, as they didn’t (create) the movies they worked in, but other people, as they r not responsible, neither for the success nor for the failure.

If u all would ask me this question, I’d say it’s Harman Baweja ’cause he was given a difficult role to play, similar to Hrithik’s role in his latest movies, and as a debutant, he did really well, needs some experience, but he really deserves, and besides the talent, he’s handsome, a good looking & got a strong presence on the screen, what about u all?!

Aryan:  (September 23, 2008 at 4:51 pm)

I feel only National Awards are true to talent rest al timepass if u hav nothing to do…
and abt Akki havng the awards i dont thnk he will get it
wen he didnt get for some really good performance in the past how can he get it now…
he can get only one award “the entertainer” which doesnot fall in any category…
as far as Darsheel is concerned it very early to judge him i am telling this wit the reference to many child actors who did a brilliant job as child artist in thr very first film

Fathiya:  (September 23, 2008 at 5:15 pm)

Let me give one more example, that bollywood (and people) r so unfair and they don’t appreciate some newcomers talents. If u all watched Bigb’s movie which didn’t do well at the box office (Dil Joh bi Kahe), his son in the movie – I don’t know his name – was so talented as a debutant, even better than Shahrukh when he did “Deewana” and because the movie didn’t work, the new actor which he deserved a big attention and an award at the award functions was completely ignored!! and vanished now from bollywood! I even noticed the sadness on his face during one of awards , ’cause he was so sure of his abilities as an actor but ppl and the judges didn’t appreciate him just because the movie didn’t work.. so unfair.

Fathiya:  (September 23, 2008 at 6:53 pm)

Many kids actors who worked in good movies and were talented didn’t get any awards e.g. the kids of the movie Tararampum, thery were also good specially the girl, but as u know, if the movie wasn’t a super hit.. the actors also will be (drowned) big actors, kids actors, all of them! If Darshil Safary’s movie TZP was a flop, who’d have appreciated his talent in the movie?!! No one.

Hello to all! I’m an American who loves movies from all over the world. I’m from Austin, Texas, where a lot of American movies and TV shows are made, and our city’s nickname is “the music capital of the world”, which is just because per capita we have more musicians in this city than anywhere else (which doesn’t mean the best ones, haha). It’s a running joke that if you tell someone here that you’ve just wrapped a movie or cut a record that they will likely respond with “Yeah? Me too!” Austin also has great cultural diversity. People from all over the world come here to live for music or movie opportunities, or for our university and research opportunities. I love being able to soak up all the wonderful foods, clothes, religions, and traditions from so many different places, like India, Japan, China, Thailand, Europe, Australia, Africa, Greece… well, you get the idea. I hope I am welcome to submit comments here.

All of you have such fine points to make. However, I would respectfully submit that everything about a movie star is completely subjective, meaning that it totally depends on the viewers’ preferences, which in turn are reflected at the box office.

Some may look gorgeous, so therefore we could care less about acting ability. Some act well, so we could care less about how they look. Some are great comedians, and some are great villains.

Once in a while we get someone who has all of these entertaining qualities, and that’s usually someone who is ‘universal’, meaning that the actor is appealing to people of different tastes for different reasons, and has commonalities with a lot of people. In other words, I like the actor because he is handsome, another likes him because he does his own stunts or singing, another likes him because he emotes with such passion that it brings tears, another likes him because he is hysterically funny, another likes him because he gets intense in serious scenes, and so on.

How we perceive these screen personalities has a lot to do with our development from birth, as far as what we like and don’t like. These perceptions are formed in our minds as children, from the faces of people that made us feel good or sad or afraid. For instance, I have a friend who thinks a particular actor looks ‘evil’ because when she was 8 years old, someone who looked like him had pushed her around on the playground and bullied her on the way home, whereas one of her favorite actors totally creeps me out because he reminds me of a date that went horribly wrong. So I don’t think we could ever truly define the perfect movie star, because we all have differing criteria as to what that means to each of us personally. The box office reflects and measures those preferences since that’s where we actually pay to ‘vote’ for our favorites, if we’re theater-goers in first place. A lot of us have to wait for the DVD release, which I believe is eventually included in the grand total of sales, which is also unfair, because DVD’s cost different prices in different areas, and a lot of people are renting them anyway. That means that there was 1 sale for many more who rented the same DVD.

But as usual, it is not Shahrukh or Aamir or Akshay that rules, because money is the king of all box offices, and when these guys can no longer feed King Money, they will be replaced by the next wave of moneymakers.

And I agree with the Aryan about the media. When there’s no more info or dirt to dig up on someone, they have to move on to someone else just to keep their audience interested. So Shahrukh is boring the media, and they want fresh meat to chew on.

I think one thing we ALL have in common is a disliking of the media to some extent. But we’re stuck with them if we want to know more about the actors we see on-screen. On one hand, we want to know our actors’ favorite foods or designer, on the other we want the media to keep their opinions to themselves. But we are the ones who give them permission to do so by gossiping and arguing, instead of recognizing the fact that these actors are real humans with real lives that should not be interrupted by the media or anyone else. They look like crap when they wake up in the morning, just like the rest of us. They get insulted and react, just like the rest of us. They get full of themselves at times, just like we do. The only difference is that you and I are not on the cover of the fan magazines next to some other actor with the headline “Who Has More Cellulite?” or “Brad and Jen: Together Again?” just because they happened to meet by chance somewhere and someone had a camera. I can see the media getting involved if celebs go to an event, sure. But if they’re just running to the store for eggs, respect it and leave them alone. How would any of us like it if the same were to happen to us? Say you are an accountant, and you’re getting groceries, and someone comes up to you and hands you some paperwork and asks if you could check for mistakes right then and there. You would tell him that you’re not at work right now, to come back at some time when you are in the office.

Since we have so many celebs in Austin, and we don’t want them go back to NYC or LA, you know we want to keep them here for our own reasons :) well we don’t approach celebs on their personal time. I was in line behind Sandra Bullock at the garden shop, but no one was paying her any attention, other than a look of recognition upon seeing her face. And it wasn’t on the front page of the newspaper. Mobbing celebs is not how you get them to be your friends :)

Personally, I would like to see the box office measurements change to the number of tickets sold rather than the amount of money a movie makes since the value of the tickets is different according to what region you are in when you pay for the ticket. It would make the global box office make more sense.

One last thing: Has anyone here heard of the ‘Tallest Poppy Syndrome’? It means that when someone is getting all the acclaim and rewards, he/she seems to stand taller than the rest of us. It therefore challenges us to either do better, or try to cut him/her down so that we can equalize him/her to our status. Guess which one is easier! But let’s not forget that just like poppies, stars come into their season and are gone when their season is over, and our favorites will one day be just like dried flowers pressed into a book of memories, taken out when we want to remember them.

Dr. Patel:

About your list, the top 5 actresses, you considerd Vidya Balan as number 5. Actually I didn’t forget her in my list but she’s an actress which can’t be rated as yet. She’s good, but also she lacks something, and what does she really lack?? I still don’t know!! she’s beautiful, talented, but there’s something about her, she’s different, therefore I couldn’t rate her in the top 10.. I think she’s a mysterious actress.. can’t say anything about her future, whether she’ll continue in bollywood and will continue as a successful actress or will be vanished from bollywood one day.

Punjabi Sher: don’t u think that u aren’t saying anything useful on this web except : Akshay Kumar is the true king.. and repeatedly?!!

We’ve heard u saying this many many times, and we said already: Let him be.. but I love Shahrukh, some people love Shahrukh, and popularity is nothing to do with your favourite actors. If Shahrukh is now considered as No. 10, I don’t mind, I consider him better than Akshay Kumar, and if u visit other web e.g. bollywoodhungama website, u will find that some ppl don’t like Akshay and they say that he’s been overrated! Yes.. there r also lots of ppl who don’t like Shahrukh, I don’t care.

Akshay must be given a title ” King of Comedy” but not the King of Bollywood.

Punjabi Sher:  (September 25, 2008 at 5:36 pm)

Fathiya…..akshay is given the tittle of king of bollywood and also king of comdy…..Im saying again again bcs u are not accepting tha akshay is bettet than srk……….U always says that akshay is behind srk….Why???

Punjabi Sher: I never heard in the news any of what u r saying.. today.. I truned on the t.v. on NDTV channel and after a while, while I was leaving my room to answer a telephone call, I heard the announcer talking about this subject: who r the top 3 actors in bollywood now: I think she said ( but I’m not sure as I’ve to followup the news) that Aamir Khan is number (1) Shahrukh is number (2) and Akshay is number (3).

And.. what do u mean by saying: you r not accepting that Akshay is better than shahrukh?!!!!! I said many times that Shahrukh is my favourite with Hrithik Roshan in bollywood, even if they’re not at number one position.. u can’t force me to like..love..admire Akshay simply because ( I don’t) I consider him only a good actor.. that’s all even if he is considered as best actor, not in bollywood but for the whole world!!

Listen dear: The most popular actor in hollywood and the most (expensive) actor in hollywood is TOM CRUISE, but I never admired him, I don’t like his character, except one movie and one character he played all these years in the movie:(the Last Sumarai) that’s the only one for me but not for the whole world.

I always admired an actor who is no more now.. who is dead and long time ago, and it’s ( Yul Briyner) the bald actor.. and there’s a similarity in his faces with SRK.. Shahrukh and Yul.. the eyebrow, the eyes, and I think the character too!

Fathiya:  (September 26, 2008 at 2:28 am)

Aziza: can I ask u a question? Why do u ( so much) hate Shahrukh?? What did he do?!! Did he commit a crime? Did he abuse, harm, torture pople in your country?! Did he divorce or betrayed his wife?! Just answer my question and please.. don’t say what people repeats as u have no evidence that he is: a homosexual or a bisexual.. please don’t say this

I think u r a muslim, your name is Aziza, so if u r a true muslim u shouldn’t bother about the gossip, rumuors and what some people say about Shahrukh, not only shahrukh, jealous people love to spoil any celebrity’s reputation.. because they’re “failures” and didn’t achieve anything in their life, and that.. saying lies about someone who’s successful make them feel: happy!

Punjabi Sher:  (September 26, 2008 at 11:42 am)

HEY Fathiya! Now why ur saying to aziza that ur a true muslims and thats why admire muslims actor.????
U are a typical muslim who dont know anything about the bollywood. U people like muslim actors only . When two years back shahrukh was no. 1 I accepted thta he is a king. I dont choose my favourites by thier religion………I also not say other punjabis that like akshay kumar bcs he is of our religion. And u have seen any false news on the T.V. or u are telling lie. BCs now in the indian media AKshay is no.1 and aamir is no.2 and hritik is at no. 3…………And ur choice is worst thats why u dont like tom cruise, Akshay kumar.
Ok……..I also agree that this is ur own choice then why are u forcing other people to love shahrukh??
U are not indian……..And dont comment on our bollywood………..Now also I will say AKSHAY KINNG KUMAR !! U ROCK MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fathiya:  (September 26, 2008 at 6:16 pm)

Punjabi Sher: I don’t care about your feedback to my comments.. I write for ppl who loves to read my comments, who asked me to continue writing and not for u to read or give me your feedback!!

And.. I don’t admire shahrukh because he’s muslim ( go back to my previous comments, if u didn’t read them, or probably u did read them but didn’t understand them!!) If it’s just because he’s muslim, so I would have been a big Salman Khan’s fan or Aamir Khan’s fan, but I’m not, and I’d never admired Hrithik or Madhuri because they r not muslims.. am I right?

And.. I asked Aziza to answer my question.. and not you!!

Rashid Ahmed:  (September 26, 2008 at 7:01 pm)

YES Punjabi Sher. AKSHAY KING KUMAR IS THE NO. 1 ACTOR OF BOLLYWOOD.

AKKI RULES THE WHOLE WORLD. I LOVE YOU AKKI KING KUMAR.

Punjabi Sher:  (September 26, 2008 at 8:52 pm)

Im saying that why u are forcing Aziza??????????????? Why u are talking about religion with Aziza?????
