January: Hrithik Roshan’s 4 year old film Agneepath continues to be highest grosser of January, followed by Jai Ho and Race 2. The target for 2016’s biggest January film is Rs 102 crore to become the third highest grosser of the month or 123 crore to become the highest grosser of the month. Update: Airlift has now become the 3rd highest grosser of January, beating the lifetime business of Race 2. The next target is Jai Ho and finally Agneepath.

February: The second month of the year is a dull period for the industry. Not many big films release in February and 2016 will be no different. Ghayal Once Again, Sanam Re, Neerja and Fitoor are the big releases. Excellent word-of-mouth will be the key for any film to challenge the Top 3 films.

- My Name Is Khan (73 cr) - Shahrukh Khan
- Special 26 (69 cr) – Akshay Kumar
March: After February, March has also been a dull month for the industry. This year has a few films that could challenge the top grosser of the month – which also happens to be oldest film occupying the top spot – the 2008 film Race. Priyanka Chopra’s Jai Gangaajal, Sidharth – Alia’s Kapoor and Sons, Great Grand Masti and Rocky Handsome are the big films. All those film hold the potential to make it to top spot, with Great Grand Masti being the biggie.
- Race (63 cr) – Saif Ali Khan
- Queen (62 cr) – Kangana Ranaut
- Kahaani (59 cr) – Vidya Balan
April: Shah Rukh Khan is the top contender to take the top spot this month. His first non-festive release since My Name Is Khan, Maneesh Sharma’s Fan, will release on April 15. It’s ‘expected’ to easily top the collections of Housefull 2. The other contenders are Ki & Ka and Baaghi.

- Aashiqui 2 (81 cr) – Aditya Roy Kapoor
May: Last year, Tanu Weds Manu Returns did the unthinkable by grossing Rs 151 crore at the domestic box office and Akshay Kumar’s Gabbar Is Back took the third spot. This year, the target for films like Mirziya, Azhar biopic and Sarabjit would be Gabbar Is Back. The Top 2 films could prove to be out of reach.
- Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (189 cr) – Ranbir Kapoor
- Tanu Weds Manu Returns (151 cr) – Kangana Ranaut
- Gabbar Is Back (87 cr) – Akshay Kumar
June: ABCD 2 fell short this year, but 2016 has biggies lined up in June. The biggest of them all is Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 3, which releases during the Post-IPL period. The other films are Jagga Jasoos and Udta Punjab.

- Holiday (113 cr) – Akshay Kumar
July: It will be Shah Rukh Khan vs Salman Khan in July this year – i.e if the clash between Raees and Sultan isn’t averted. The other big release is Varun and John’s Dishoom. Which film will make it to the Top 3? Tell us in the comments!

August: Brothers failed last year, but 2016 marks the return of Hrithik Roshan in Mohenjo Daro, which is set to clash against Akshay’s third release of 2016 – Rustom. We also have Tiger Shroff’s ‘A Flying Jatt’ lined up for release.

September: MS Dhoni biopic, Baar Baar Dekho and Rangoon are the big releases of September. The target will be crossing the 100 crore mark to beat Grand Masti.

October: The month of Diwali has biggies in the form of Half Girlfriend, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay. The target will be SRK’s Ra One / Happy New Year and Hrithik’s Bang Bang.

November: There will be more films that will be announced for November, but currently the film that has been announced is Rock On 2.

December: The Christmas weekend has been dominated by Aamir Khan over the years. Stars like Akshay Kumar (Tees Maar Khan), Shahrukh Khan (Don 2) and Salman Khan (Dabangg 2) have tried their luck, but Aamir is in a league of his own in December. Shah Rukh tried his luck once again, but failed with Dilwale. Ranveer’s Bajirao Mastani did much better, but failed to beat 3 Idiots. It’ll be Aamir vs Aamir once again this year, as he would be targeting the record of Dhoom 3 at the very least. But if there is one man in the industry, who you would place your bet on beating the total of PK, it would be Aamir himself. Strong content, of course, will be the key.

Airlift should beat agneepath..if it holds well during weekdays then it may even beat rowdy rathore too..
Fan should comfortably beat Houseful 2 and become the top grosser for April but if the content is widely accepted then a real big number is on the cards.
Raees and sultan will struggle to cross kick with clash forget Bajrangi bhaijaan.. If the clash is averted then also content will be needed to cross major benchmarks like 250 crore,dhoom 3 or Bajrangi bhaijaan figure..
Mohenjadaro should end up in top 3 in the worst case Scenerio but if all goes well then chennai express can be challenged.
It will be interesting to see where Diwali releases end up because the top spot is not that huge as compared to other festive blockbusters but again the clash will hurt both the film.
And as far as December is concerned, it is very correctly described in the article.. I have placed my bet already for Dangal creating 350 crore club and ending up as the highest grosser of 2016 so lets just hope it does that.
Agneepath along with Jai Ho and Race 2…. were completely mediocre films….and would love Airlift to beat all of them…………of the three, Jai Ho only ran on Salman’s name…while the others, one was a remake of cult classic with multi-starcast, while Race 2 was a sequel to a successful movie…so in comparision infact both of them failed to cash on those aspects………so, Salman again won hands down….. but I hope Akki breaks this record with Airlift.

Good stuff, but it’s very sexist to leave the actresses’ names out. In a film like 2 States for example, Alia’s pull was as strong – if not stronger – than Arjun. Ditto for Deepika in YJHD. I think it’s unfair to only include their names when it’s a “female-centric” movie and they should be given half the credit in movies where they had equal roles.
