Summing up the year – The men who did well:

  • Aamir Khan: What does one say about this man? He has single-handedly taken Dangal to a mammoth 300 crore plus grosser. A box office phenomenon, who has leapfrogged from 718 crore to 1093 crore (assuming Dangal ends with 375 crore) this decade with just one film. That’s nearly as much as the entire decade collections of Shahid Kapoor, who made his debut well before the decade began. His average per film has also jumped to a mind-boggling 273 crore per film, which is an outstanding 220 crore+ even if his off-beat art film Dhobi Ghat is included. By far the best for an actor this decade and also the only actor to average more than 200 crore per film. Legend. Note: We have removed Dhobi Ghat from the list to make it fair.
  • Salman Khan: It was supposed to be his year, until Dangal arrived and took the sheen away from the phenomenal run of Sultan. He still commands the biggest opening in the industry, both in terms of collections, consistency, fan following and the number of tickets sold. 2017 will be a challenge for him, because in the two-way battle for the numero-uno position in the industry, Aamir has upped the ante and it’s upto Salman to challenge those numbers and remain at the top of his game. Inspite of Dangal’s outstanding run, let’s not take anything away from the fact that Sultan managed to collect 300 crore in a year when no other Hindi film crossed 150.
  • Akshay Kumar: It’s been a excellent year for Akshay, his success ratio has increased from 48 to 54%, his hit-ratio has gone up from 33% to 42% too. And with him doing interesting films and making all the right moves (as far as positivity in the media and image is concerned), Akshay is expected to take it to the next level in 2017. In 2016, he moved one step ahead into the Top 4, could he stake a claim into the Top 3 in 2017? That’s going to be the big question.
  • Sushant Singh Rajput: Backed by the stardom and popularity of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sushant delivered the year’s 3rd highest grosser. It’ll now be upto him to sustain the momentum and establish himself in the industry.
  • Ranbir Kapoor: After several back-to-back disasters, Ranbir finally got the box office ‘hit’ he so desperately needed. ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ also managed to beat the competition from a big film like ‘Shivaay’ and comprehensively won the controversial clash.
  • Arjun Kapoor: It was a good year for him, making a comeback after the failure of Tevar in 2015. Ki and Ka was a solid box office hit, he has edged out Ranbir in both success and hit ratios too. 2017 will be important with ’Half Girlfriend’ and ’Mubarakan’.
  • Varun Dhawan: A steady year. ‘Dishoom’ did fairly well to touch the 70 crore mark, even though the trailers and other promos weren’t well-received. The film opened well and went on to recover its investment, although the actor and the rest of the ‘Dishoom’ team would’ve hoped for a better lifetime total. However, Varun retains his 100% success ratio.
  • Tiger Shroff: The year began very well for Tiger with the success of ‘Baaghi’, but all the good work was undone with ‘A Flying Jatt’ crash-landing instead of flying at the box office.
  • Shahid Kapoor: For someone who made his debut more than 13 years ago, his record remains poor but ‘Udta Punjab’ did fairly well at the box office. When will his breakthrough year come? When will he start doing films that appeal to the audience more than the critics? The questions remain.

The men who didn’t:

  • Shah Rukh Khan: The much-hyped FAN turned out to be a big setback for SRK, right after the under-performance of Dilwale during Christmas in 2015. No one would’ve expected the film to fall below the 100 crore mark, but it finished with a poor total of 85 crore. Unlike ‘Mohenjo Daro’, the writing wasn’t on the wall for ‘Fan’ prior to release, as the trailer got a very good response. 2017 is going to be a very important year if the superstar, who still commands one of the biggest fan-following in the industry, has to challenge the likes of Aamir and Salman who are way ahead in the race at the moment.
  • Hrithik Roshan: Mohenjo Daro was one of the most anticipated films of 2016, but right from the first trailer to every other promo – nothing worked for the Ashutosh Gowariker film. If the embarrassment of losing to ‘Rustom’ wasn’t enough, Mohenjo Daro is the biggest disaster of 2016 – not including smaller films like Great Grand Masti, Rock On 2 and Mirzya. Hrithik has to turn things around in 2017, but it isn’t going to be easy with his first release ‘Kaabil’ all set to take on SRK’s ‘Raees’.
  • Ajay Devgn: 2017 was a forgettable year for Ajay as his ambitious film ‘Shivaay’ couldn’t take a big initial nor could it sustain well enough to recover costs in the long run.
  • Ranveer Singh: Befikre carried high expectations, more so since it was Aditya Chopra’s first film in 8 years and he was directing his first film without Shah Rukh. Ranveer was returning after ‘Bajirao Mastani’, a career-defining film. Unfortunately, Befikre was rejected by the audience.
  • Emraan Hashmi: 2016 was yet another big setback as the franchise which gave him his biggest career blockbuster, failed to even take a initial

  • Hrithik has to do more movies now else he will lag way behind.
SRK has still a chance , I think his movie with Imtiaz Ali will do close to 160cr.
Salman will rule 2017 no doubt.
    Baadshaho will do around 80cr.
Akshay will have a good year too.
Finally my predictions for the much awaited clash:-
    Raees – 138cr
    Kaabil – 94cr.

  • HIGHEST 5 ATHG 6 ATBB
    7 HGOTY
    2 HGOTD
    1 BHOTD
ONE OF THE BEST HIT AND SUCCESS RATIO
    4 NATIONAL AWARDS
    2 PADMA AWARDS
HIGHEST RATED MOVIE ON IMDB OF 9.2 AND HIGHEST AVERAGE RATING OF 7

    ONLY AAMIR KHAN RULES

  • how aamir’s success rate is 75% ?? all his
films r all time blockbuster(d3, pk, dangal) & talaash semi hit
    so 4 out of 4 means 100%

  • Pity on people who were writing off srk!! You dumbshits!! THE STATISTICS SPEAK SOMETHING ELSE!! He’s giving tough competition n giving hits n making money than other so called A-listers!! N than too in his WORST PHASE OF CARRIER!
That’s why people call him king!
I agree he hasn’t given more highest grosser but we’re sure that king will be back…bigger n better!

  • Kaabil :: more than 100 Cr
Raees :: less than 100 Cr

that predictions are more sufficient than all to both films that are slated to release on 25th January 2017.

  • 1st 100,150,200,250,300,350 cr In INDIA
    1st 200,300,400,500,600,700,800 cr WorldWide
    1st 30,35,40,45m overseas
Only actor to have a 350 cr movie in India 700cr worldwide and 30m movie overseas

TOP 2 IN INDIA WORLDWIDE AND OVERSEAS BELONGS TO AAMIR AND HE HAS MOST MOVIES IN TOP 5

  • Why limit at blockbuster percentage? ??.wat abt all time highest grossing record breaking blockbuster % ?

aamir will hv 75% while srk is d only other star with a athg rest all have zero

  • No doubt TZH is the BIGGEST movie of the year…

Also GST is likely to come in bringing ticket rates down….or if ticket rates remain the same, NET Collections would increase substantially!

Plus not to forget, Xmas and New Year holidays are falling on Mondays. First Sunday of TZH is likely to be the biggest single day ever !!!!

Unless the film is rejected, TZH should make new opening records. Target will be to beat first week collection of Sultan………..just feel with the new tax structure in place, the record would be more achievable!!!

However, since long, I’ve been reading that Xmas is the best period to release a film followed by Eid. Diwali somehow, seems to have lost its flavour with trade sites (Mainly because not many good films have released on Diwali for a long long time).

Two of the biggest films of this year – Robot and TZH are releasing on Diwali and Xmas, will be interesting to see how it goes.

Personally, I still feel DIWALI is the best period to release films. Perfect weather with schools, colleges, courts etc closed for about a week and ofcourse people come out and spend money with families at that time of the year!

  • Megastar Salman Khan: It was supposed to be his year, until Dangal arrived and took the sheen away from the phenomenal run of Sultan. He still commands the biggest opening in the industry, both in terms of collections, consistency, fan following and the number of tickets sold. 2017 will be a challenge for him, because in the two-way battle for the numero-uno position in the industry Tubelight and TZH Salman will rule 2017 no doubt

  • Fan had no songs and festive release date. If fan released xmas 2016 then it does 400 cr. amir is struggling for 400. despite 5 open week, hike ticket prices, tax free in five states only 320 cr. Wait 2018 SRK will cross 750 cr.

  • Bollywood is wholely rely on Aamir and salman without them bollywood industry is nothing and shahrukh as well.
3 decades and still ruling and most importantly they are getting better and better,3 khans are pillars of bollywood industry.

  • Tubelight is Salman’s last release that can beat Dangal because TZH is an action masala types film and will do good business of 300cr+ and his next releases after that also looks like will be masala types with Dabangg 3 and Remos dance film. But Tubelight is a Bajrangi Bhaijaan type film which appeals to a wider audience and if Kabir-Salman combo works again then 400 cr is on, hopefully.

  • 2017 and 2018 will belong to SRK. Amir xmas honymon period is over. He will never get xmas release date now.

  • Aamir all the way ahead with good choices. Srk should can do anytime and he has done this before too. He can change these stats in sometime only. Hope so

  • except for blunder in aamir’s success rate ( it should b 100%) it’s a brilliant article. one of ur best

  • People saying about akshay . They should see the hit ration is 54% I.e. from 24 is 12 higest then most of Actor total movie

  • 2018 aur 2019 main to chance hi nahi hain Bhaiya..Thug of Hindustan and Saare Jahan se acchaa will arrive respectively…Jisko HGOTY dena hain woh 2017 main dele

  • Why don’t you talk about increased ticket prices for Dangal which helped the movie double the collection .also tax free benefit comparing should be keeping every parameters constant then only it’s fair

  • thanks for correcting the aamir success % . brilliant article. luvd it. i hv been saying this for a long time that ranking should b made using all d abv factors u hv taken here & giving diff weightage to them
    so 5 points for athg
    4 for blockbuster %
    3 for avg per film
    2 for hit %
    1 for success %

    plz use this formula

much better than ur formula where only last 5 films & avg per film is used

plz listen to my advice and make d ranking

  • Akshay is getting better with every year.
Hrithik and SRK really needs to think about their movie choices.. People are getting smart and jokes works no more now.
Salman and Aamir are just unmatchable.
But what’s make me feel most bad is about Shahid kapoor. you have to admit that(unless you are a blind hater) man have 10/10 acting talent just like Ranbir kapoor.still his movies are not working. That guy is purr talent no doubt but to survive in Bollywood you have to give hits.Hope he’ll give hits as Rangoon and Padmavati.

Varun has all on track.. Sushant is rising there.Ranvir’s talent needs no explanation.
And about others i Don’t give a Damn.

  • Akshay never sleeps!

Aamir uncle be like :” I’ll be back in 2018. Lemme take some rest after making records with Dangal. So you guys.. I give you enough time to break my records” ?

  • Bahubali 2 teaser promo will release with Raees. Raees buzz is creating bwandar on social media.
Before release Raees buzz is bigger than after 2 week release dangal. But it will clashing kaabil otherwise raees break amir’s bones.

  • Srk will prove himself with Raees & Rehnuma.

    Raees above 180cr
    Rehnuma above 250cr

King will get his position again. ….

  • Aamir Khan knows what kind of films he want to make – a film with a social message, presented in a universal way
Salman khan knows what kind of films is expected out of him – a story which incorporates his quirky antics and strengthening the cult of Salman Khan
SRK is confused whom to go after – Salman or Aamir. His last five years has been truly disastrous for a superstar of his stature(totally in terms of audience patronage, boxoffice wise he is still the top three).

  • fare article it is. at every aspect only two persons are at no 1. salman or Aamir. & i think aamir should do 1 film each year. & movies like ghajini, wanted etc for crazy fanbase like bhaijaan. & bhaijaan should stick to bb,tubelight etc then they both will be unmatchable.
