Singh Is King is one of the most hyped Bollywood movies in recent times. There are several reasons for the hype
- Akshay Kumar, the superstar, is the biggest reason for all the hype surrounding the movie. Akshay’s fan following has increased tremendously in the past 2 years. Also his pairing with co-star Katrina Kaif has created box-office magic in the past.
- The movie is directed by Anees Bazmee whose last two movies, No Entry and Welcome, were box office Blockbusters.
- Producer Vipul Amruthlal Shah has left no stone unturned in promoting the movie. More than 5 crores has been spent just on promotion.
Is Singh Is Kinng worth all the hype it has generated over the past few weeks? Well to a certain extent, Yes.
First the story. Singh is Kinng is about Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar) a simpleton, from a village in Punjab, with a heart of gold. He always tries to do good, but exactly the opposite happens. He tries to help a villager and ends up ruining the whole village. Frustrated the villagers decide to send him far away to Australia, to bring back Lakhan Singh a.k.a Lucky, an underworld don in Australia.
But as always when Happy Singh sets out to do good, he does the opposite. Happy accompanied by his friend Tony land in Egypt instead of Australia. Here Happy meets Sonia (Katrina Kaif) and falls head over heels in love, at first sight.
Happy then makes his way to Australia. Without any money, Happy and Tony starve for days until Happy bumps into Rose Lady (Kirron Kher) who gives him a place to stay and food to eat. Happy then meets King Lucky, but due to an attack on the gang, Lucky is hurt and now cannot speak a word. After a lot of confusion, Happy is crowned the King (don) of the dangerous underworld gang. After a series of comical errors and misadventures, Sonia turns out to be Rose Lady’s daughter who returns to Australia with her boyfriend (Ranvir Shorey).
Does Happy end up with Sonia or does she marry her boyfriend? Does Happy succeed in taking Lucky back to his village in Punjab? Forms the rest of the hilarious tale.
Singh Is King Review
Singh is King is a perfect example of a great first half ruined by an average second. The pre-interval portions of the movie are filled with hilarious scenes.
- Happy chasing a chicken only to end up ruining the whole village is side-splitting.
- The scenes between Tony and Happy in Egypt and Australia. The dialogues are rib tickling, especially a few by Tony (Om Puri).
- The way Singh (Happy) becomes King is brilliantly written, enacted and executed.
After the extremely entertaining first half, you expect an even better second. Unfortunately, it pales in comparison. The song picturised on Javeed Jaffrey was unnecessary. Also the lack of scenes between Tony and Happy is a negative as their chemistry was brilliant. The climax seemed to be hurried up and before you realise the movie comes to an abrupt end.
Another aspect that could go against the movie is, at times it’s hard to understand the Punjabi dialogues. Also at times in the first half, the voice is not in sync with the lip movement. Wonder why such minor flaws are overlooked in an A grade bollywood movie.
The music is above average. Few songs like ‘Teri Ore’ and ‘Singh is King’ title track standout.
Singh Is King Performances
Akshay Kumar is a great entertainer, he puts his heart and soul into the character of Happy. His comic timing is as good as ever. Katrina Kaif does exactly what’s required of her; she manages to look great in every scene. Must say, her smile has a very pleasing effect on the viewer. She’s also looking better with each passing film. Om Puri is brilliant and his chemistry with Akshay Kumar is one of the reasons to watch the movie. Sonu Sood has improved a lot acting wise since his debut in B grade flicks. Neha Dhupia looks hot, does a decent job. Javeed Jaffrey is funny. The rest of the character actors are good.
Singh Is King Verdict
Overall Singh is King is a typical Akshay Kumar mindless entertainer which has a great first half, beautifully picturised songs and a gorgeous Katrina Kaif. But what makes Singh is King more worthwhile is Akshay Kumar, who holds the movie together, well supported by Om Puri.
If your are a die hard Akshay fan and enjoyed his movies like Welcome, Heyy Babyy last year, dont think twice.. Just go for it! Others can wait for the DVD.
Ill go with 3 on 5 for the most hyped movie of the year!

SRK is already toppled, he’s at the mercy of Akshay Kumar now. Singh is Kinng has beat OSO as the highest-grossing movie ever in Bollywood history!!! SRK is too far behind now.
As to the king of Bollywood, why are people denying the facts? Akki has beat SRK in all respects with Singh is Kinng, especially in terms of box office collections, and there is no challenge anymore. Akki has proven who is the king today.

The “judges of Bollywood” are the viewers, the audience of the movie, and they already decided AKSHAY IS KING and SRK IS DING. Singh is Kinng has grossed more than OSO, and now set a record for the highest-grossing movie in Bollywood in the first week of ALL TIME!

n i can only say the first half cannot to be enacted much better
by any other actor in the industry…
the song bhootni ke made be njoy so much that i wanted to be part of that song

Sing is Kinng is a masterpeace very very good movie. Akshay Kumar more popular than SRK in Bangladesh, because Bangladeshi People love action, comdey and romance movies and Akshay Kumar has done all kind of movies. SRK has done only romance movies which nobody cannot see at home. Because there are my parents, grand parents, sisters, aunties and uncles sitting over there. And romance movie are not for the family.
These kind of movies is only for puberty and adolescence Peoples. That’s why SRK movie cannot be seen with the family. I have seen SINGH IS KINNG with my whole family. AKSHAY KUMAR IS OUR FAVOURITE ACTOR NOW. And we have planned to watch the “Chandni Chowk To China” with my comunity. We love Akshay Kumar style. Singh Is Kinng did business of over 5 crore over its first week in Pakistan and the craze continues in week two with overcrowded theatres and shows having to be held at 3 am at night to meet demand. The collections from Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi and Multan are mind boggling in week two and the film will show minimal drops. The advance for second week in Lahore DHA showed 80 lakhs on Friday alone. Faisalabad was still running to overcrowded shows in week two. Rawalpindi which opened on Friday showed tickets sold for the weekend in advance on Friday itself. Also what we can say. Singh is kinng rocks the Pakistan!

SRK is still cherished by the ladies(hindu, muslim, christian) and will continue to be so for some years ahead. Despite OM shanti om being an average movie it did very well oevrseas. Remove SRK and put somebody else. What would be the outcome. WHY?
Akki is the new doll, the teens(all religion) loves him. We decides what we want to see and the marketting guru produce such films for us. Once it was love storylater emotional then action n today comedy. Akki performs well in comedy (action as well)thats why he get so many proposal and successful releases.
Bollywood belongs to INdia and indians.Whether you are punjabi,or gujrati we on the other side we know its indian who act and make the successful movies.
Bollywood is closing the gap. Hollywood is closer. Thanks to muslims or hindu?
Its easy to break but bollywood is building something dont ruin it. I hate SRK **because he is overrated but I have really enjoyed some of his film where ppl talked less about him.
Please dont do this for AKki and the newcomers. There are many non hindu who loves him and we dont always get the time to write our opinions.
I can fully undertsand why hindu or punjabi support AKKI but think twice why put AKKI so high as they did for SRK see his downfall. Since 1990 I was 11, I loved Kumar Gaurav, Amir , Salman , Ajay , Akshay , Sanjay dutt, Anil Kapoor, Saif, Bobby,Aftab and my latest addition is Kunal Khemu. All Mauritian loved the acting of kunal in Superstar. We applauded because he deserved it. If the script was bad its not his fault, that boy has the ability to make you cry.
All these names is exporting India so respect them and its industry. They know their limits. After more than a century my ancestors came from INdia i can still speak in BHojpuri and hindi as opposed to uk citizen of indian origin thanks to hindi serials and movies.
You are a gr8 muslim, your are gr8 hindu, etc but akki isnt he doesnt wear his turban, SRK doesnt perform his prayer as he should.
Dont associate them to religion.
When I hear the Indian national anthem it thrill me. My ancestors blood still flows in my vein. Be a proud Indian all ppl out there. See the previous posts Even Pakistanis like Indian Star and i like atif aslam. Isnt this wonderful. Wise ppl take advantage of it.

Saw this much-hyped movie last nite…oh my god…this is such a disgrace to entertainment. A very very stupid movie , pathetic jokes, senseless comedy. Highly disappointing for me as I like Akki’s acting (i wud say - used to )
this movie is a real torture and i dont see anything funny in it, a disgusting plot and as usual Typical Indian Cinema’s horrendous style (of everything)
this movie s**ks big time and i dont understand whats so punjabi in it..? although it has made good money, but the movie is useless…please please dont watch it….watch ZOHAN instead….but not this …

U Name it: Again I’m receiving the same messages from this guy who’s name is (Sachin)!! Well.. I don’t think he’s serious because no one can love someone (blindly)! I told him a lie that I’m 80 years old, got while hair, etc. but in fact I could be his mother only, not a grandmother. I’m 53 years old, divorced since 20 years, got 3 kids, 2 girls who’re married and have kids, and my youngest is a boy who’s now 24 years old, means he is Sachin’s age ( he reminds me of someone before 10 years, who was crazy, loving me and was 20 years younger than me!! when I used to work at a bank, and whenever I used to tell him that I could be his mother, he never believed and used to tell me: u look only 28 years old, I’m 23 years old, so what, few years older doesn’t matter, and there was no way to convience him that I’m older 20 years!)
Well, I think I sound from my writing that I’m young and that’s because I grewup in my age but not in my thinking, my character or my look. I still feel that I’m in the age of 20 and I don’t know why!

Pathetic copy of a good movie. I am sure Aneez Bazmee did not write this all by himself. This is a full fledged copy of a Jackie Chan movie - Mr. Canton and Lady Rose. Right from the plot to even the lady (Kiron Kher) selling roses.
Please do not laud the film for originality. It had its own comic pieces and I agree that Akshay carried the entire movie on his shoulders and did a good job of that.

kya yaar…….. khaya piya kuch nahin gilas toda barah aana.i really like akshay but how could he be so brainless what and how he was being made playing his parts,that silly chasing a chicken ending up to ruin the entire village,the conspiracy to get him out of the village…total crrraaaaap. the way singh becomes king,i dont find a damn a humor element in the scene,wonder why people liked it. the unsynchronized lipping in the first half freaks out,how could the editor disgrace our country’s A grade movie overlooking such apparent flaws,that even a kid can find out.khiran kher seemed to be a little artificial. if say,the 1st half was entertaining overall,but the second half was worse than i had imagined.the climax was just hurried up,neha dhupia sneaks on the guns of all the sharp shooters..not happening and the way ranbir shorey downs his arms before the accidental marriage of akshay and katrina was quite indigestible.once he says to the pandit “cover off all the chanting and other moves within one hour,i dont want this go long” implying his less concern to customs..but what inspired him to be so weird to those ’saat phere’ at the end…now this screws up yaar.by the way katrina was as hot as usual, ompuri was brilliant,javed jaff was ok, neha dhupia was ok either, sonu sood hadn’t much to perform.wellllllll a gud one time watch movie for a die hard akshay fan…an average movie with above average music but unnecessarily hyped which popped around 5 crore merely on the publicity.

I was very disappointed in the hype surrounding this film and hoped for better. It was poorly edited, choppy and confusing. The dialogue and subtitles were rushed and not at the professional level one would expect from a venue that puts out thousands of movies a year.
It had great potential, having a somewhat credible story line (typical of most indian movies - boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl, moral lesson etc), scenery was passable and of course Mr. Puri delivered his lines with usual aplomb.
Granted I did enjoy the handsome leads. If Bollywood is bringing its movies to mainstream, it should cease dressing like the poor cousin.

I love to see AKSHAY KING KUMAR´s show ” FEAR FACTOR”. There is only actor in bollywood who wants to give confidence to the all 13 ladies and both viewers men and women. BECAUSE AKSHAY KING KUMAR is like a teacher.

Wow, Horrible movie, I’m a die hard akshay fan, and I’m punjabi, but this movie was SHIT. Honestly, after watching Namastey London which is my all time favorite movie, I thought the same actors from that movie plus the producer would come out with a great film. Nope, they decided to do a shit ass job, just promote the Singh name, and expect people to pay to watch it, because obviously, when people pay for the movie, they can’t get their money back. Honestly, really dissapointed with ahshay, its like dude, you’ve done some really good comedy movies, you’ve done some really good serious ones, why would you ruin your name with shitty movies like this, just to make a few bucks. I’m a Singh, and this Singh is extremely dissapointed.
First off, Om puri’s freakin old, get rid of him. The whole chicken chase scene, HA HA HA, not, like do we really need senseless running around and damaging everything, what is this, I thought we were over the whole Jhonny lever era. Ohh and then we are suppose to believe, Katrina is suppose to be a lawyer, gimme a break. And she believes that all criminals should be locked up or killed, yeah sure, thats what every lawyer thinks, not believable at all. Even after all that, i’m thinkin alright, maybe it’ll be interesting to know how Akshay becomes king, NOPE, he walks in, the idiot king goes into some coma, and accidently points to akshay HA HA HA, NOT, come on man, damn, no wonder why hollywood makes fun of us. And I thought okay after he becomes king, he’ll do some krazy stuff, yea right. The whole F$%^in movie he runs around pleasing kiran kher, COME ON PEOPLE, is this a PG 5 movie, HE DIDNT DO JACK WHEN HE BECAME KING, and we are suppose to believe he’s a nice guy, the villagers got rid of him cuz he was annoying, they didnt care about bringing don back. Why does bollywood over and over try to make us Indian seem like idiots, where we will laugh at anything they throw at us. And then theres Javed, no comment. Just really really sad, NOT FUNNY DUDE. Being punjabi, i’m also really dissapointed with the guys with the turbans. THEY DIDNT even look freaking punjabi, it looks like the producer went to a shop said can i get some pre made turbans, and just threw it on their heads. You could’ve simply took off the turbans off these guys and called is Patel is king, like seriously, maybe you can scam people in watching that as well.
And according to those people who liked the movie, lol its okay to admit you didnt. Just because its akshay and its bollywood, you dont have to go with the crowd. The movie is stupid and a waste of time, but people can’t admit it cuz they did waste their money and their time but just because of their love for ahshay and katrina, they got their freakin eyes closed. The movie was shit, end of story, akshay, your making money but ruining your career, you were amazing in namastey london, do another flick like that. Or do a proper comedy with paresh rawal, those are always amazing.
And as much as i’m a die hard akshay fan, people lets be serious, amir khan is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better, in every angle, he’s untouchable, shar rukh, salman, nor saif got nothing on him. Ohh btw way, Salman is prob the worst actor in all time, freakin drunk ass gay piece of shit.

You r punjabi and didn’t like Singh is Kinng?!!!! So. punjabi ppl.. r u going to attak “Disappointed” with your none stop comments because he’s really disappointed and found the movie a crap?! It’s his opinion, found it a crap from his perspective.
Can I ask u a q: What does “Singh” mean? Is it like “Sikh”? And.. u took the movie too seriously.. it’s just a comedy, and comedy movies r stupid, shallow, the purpose is just to make u laugh, to have fun. I enjoyed watching it, enjoyed the songs, except the last 30 minutes and the parachote scene which was so stupid, at the starting of the movie.
Punjabi Sher: c’mon.. attack your friend.. and blame him for months, just because he didn’t like SIK!!

Dear Fathiya,
as per your request, Singh is derived from the Sanskirt work Simha which translates to “lion”. It’s the name adopted by male Sikhs, same way as Kaur is a female name. It’s given to a child when they are named at the gurdwara a few weeks after their birth. Its used as a common surname and middle name in North India by many communities. However, I still have ran into many people who’s name is Singh but they are from the west indies, Sri lanka and various other areas. The reason they have the name probably due to someone in their ancestry being Sikh.
Also Fathiya, you mentioned that I took the move “too seriously” I can understand your view, but here’s the situation, the movie is entitled “Singh is Kinggg” so hence it is promoting “Singh”. However, I feel it didnt do a good job of that, I felt as if it was trying to show that Singh people just run around mess things up, get drunk, preety much how BOLLYWOOD portrays us in every movie, (WE ARE NOT ALL LIKE DALER MENDHI, who is a horrible excuse as SIKH). Bollywood show’s us as turban wearing slobs, running around always drinking an dancing and saying “Balle Balle” over and over again. We are far from that, and I thought SIK as you say would at least show a different more accurate side of us, but nope it didnt. Yes it is a comedy, but I dont know if you know, being from the US, they promoted the hell out of this movie, saying its a great hit. I have some of my cacausian friends saying ohh I heard bout this SIK movie and are going to watch it, well sad to say they got a lot of jokes from this movie, making fun of us “turban” people.
Fathiya, as you might know, the film industry is very powerful, although they claim to be innocent. They control a large part of how people view the society around them. Where do you think Stereotypes come from. Sure there were great songs, cheap comedy etc., but then again look at Namastey London, also a romantic comedy, MUCH better movie, and actually contains some substance.
Also Fathiya, I find it a bit funny how you claim Punjabi Sher to be my friend, how you assumed just because he’s punjabi and so am I, that automatically we should share opinions. For example, why can’t I be your friend as well. And whats with the whole asking everyone here to attack me Fathiya, because of my opinion, wow I thought I had a right to my own opinion. Lol and also, Fathiya you say I took this movie way too seriously, hmmm I’m sorry, I didnt realize we were examing the movie SIK, hmmm I wonder what else you do when you come onto a blog thats main element is to discuss SIK. Maybe I should find a blog thats titled “Disussion on SIK but dont take it seriously”. That would make more sense right.

Dissapointed: oh. no no no… u got it all wrong.. there is a big problem in discussion here.. I write a sentence which got a specific meaning, but some readers missunderstand them.. completely different!!
First of all, thanks for explaining the meaning of (Singh)
About the sentence which I wrote it for Punjabi Sher saying: “c’mon.. attack you friend” didn’t u notice at the end of the sentence 2 exclamation marks, as I’m writing now( !!)
Saying (your friend) because all punjabi ppl here were supporting each other against me.. therefore I said (your friend) I as u r Punjabi too, but different than the others, because Punjabi Sher (always) understands my comments wrong, and by saying ( attack your friend) it’s just like teasing him as he always attacks and want everyone to love Akshay and his movies and not to criticise him and his movies in any way!!
I’ll give u an example the way he misunderstands.. I wrote a sentenece to a girl who’s name is Aziza on some other pages, asking her the following: Aziza.. why do u hate Shahrukh? and P. Sher understood my sentence this way: Aziza.. why don’t u love Shahrukh!! do u think the 2 sentences gives the same meaning?! That’s the big problem here, and I hope u got it right now.

looks like Akshay’s following Govinda’s footsteps…. Love his acting, but he is repeatedly doing same time of roles. Needs a change. Or else he’ll end up like Govinda
Also…. Singh is King was one of the most awaited film… thought it would be good…. but its a big disappointment…. its a crap movie
