Ajay Devgn approaches the Competition Apellate Tribunal

Shocked after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) rejected their plea against against Yash Raj Films (YRF), alleging monopolistic practices, Ajay Devgn Films (ADF) has now approached the Competition Apellate Tribunal.

“We are shocked by the rejection of our legitimate case by the Competition Commission of India. We have approached the appellate tribunal against the order” an spokesperson of ADF said.

ADF complained to the CCI against YRF alleging malpractice in connection with the clash of the release of the former’s “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”, with the latter’s “Son Of Sardaar” on Diwali, Nov 13.

It was alleged that YRF was using its dominant position to ask exhibitors to dedicate more screens to JTHJ instead of SOS.

But the case was rejected Monday by the CCI, which stated there is no contravention of the provisions of the act by the alleged agreement between Yash Raj Films Private Limited and its various associated enterprises.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s last directorial featuring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, while Son Of Sardaar stars Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt. Both films release this Diwali.

  • YRF have done all cheap tricks to get the screens. Ajay could also have booked the screens when his Bol Bachchan was about to release. but he didn’t bcoz he beleives in fair play.
but srk & yrf were so insecure that they used Salman Khan’s star power to pre-book all the better single screens.
yrf have lost the repect it had since years, becoz of their cheap act. talking about srk, he was never respected in the 1st place.

  • Ajay goes simply mad. He thought by going to court he may do some sort of promotion, but Alas this type of act makes him a laughmaker person. He is loosing sympathy from Publib. AJAY NO WAY FOR U THIS DIWALI because King SRK here to rule. JTHJ ruling youtube, twitter, facebook and now in advance booking it is ruling by huge mergin. SOS all the way to Disaster.

  • nw its proven. it was nthing more than a publicity stun. bt i doubt a man of ajay’s caliber would stoop that low.

  • @ Niloy, Even Anna and Others loses on court, does that means one should not appeal. Sorry Yaar, Diwali bekar bina Son of Sardar.

  • The box office collision between Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar on November 13 was always going to be a clash of titans. In an unexpected twist, Ajay Devgn accused Yash Raj Films, producer of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, of using it’s dominant position to edge Son Of Sardaar out of the competition. Ajay Devgn alleged that his film was not finding enough single screen theatres. The Competition Commission of India has now rejected Ajay’s petition filed against Yash Raj Films.

Here’s what happened, and who said what:

Ajay Devgn’s production house claims Yash Raj Films ‘armtwisted’ distributors to keep Son Of Sardaar out of theaters. A legal notice sent by his production house to Yash Raj Films stated that a complaint had been filed with the Competition Commission of India. Ajay says he filed the complaint after sending messages to Yash Raj Films. “Through people messages were sent and things were spoken. Directly I haven’t met them …I don’t share that rapport with them. And through exhibitors themselves we tried to manage things but when it did not happen..then,” he told PTI.

Earlier, YRF in a statement had claimed to have booked less than 1,500 single screens out of the 10,500-plus single screens available on all-India basis. They also said, “When we approached the theatre owners earlier this year, they were more than happy to accommodate Jab Tak Hai Jaan, owing to their long relationship with the production house. No one was forced to include our film in their theatres.” Yash Raj Films closed it’s distribution deals before the release of it’s previous film, Ek Tha Tiger starring Salman Khan. Some theatres who screened Ek Tha Tiger have apparently chosen not to show Jab Tak Hai Jaan at all.

Ajay says this is not true. “Out of the 10,000 screens if they have booked 1,500 and I have 8,000 screens then am I fool to spend money and lose my reputation and go to court. It does not make sense logically. Secondly going by the statistics then out of the 10,000-12,000 screens more than 5,000-6,000 are in South where only regional films release,” he told PTI. “Then in the remaining 4,000-4,500 screens 1,500-2,000 are closed… Those which are operational are less. For example in Dadar there are about seven single screen theatres they have booked six, in Delhi there are 21 single screens we have three.. This is something that has never happened before. You can verify it,” he added.

Ajay also told PTI that he had filed the notice much before the death of Yash Chopra on October 21. “I had filed the complaint much before the demise of Yash Chopra. When this happened I was like people are going to target me and nobody is going to understand my point of view. I was a villain on both sides. I couldn’t withdraw it (notice) from the Competition Commission. It is not a normal court,” Ajay said. “I respected Yashji as much anybody else does. We have grown up watching his films,” he added.

Shah Rukh Khan, star of Jab Tak Hai Jaan which is the last film directed by Yash Chopra, says the controversy is a legal matter and has nothing to do with him. “I was reading about it today. There are enough screens. These are all legal matters and thankfully it’s not my production company,” Shah Rukh told reporters at a press meet on his 47th birthday in Mumbai. “I hope they resolve it and on this Friday both the films do well. I have nothing against anyone. I have no problem with anyone,” he said.

  • the single screen owners will lose a big chunk of money this just bcoz of being forced by yrf. who the hell would waste their precious 3 hrs in a threatre watching crap.

  • SRK has promised that he/she shall give good cash to all those websites who declare JTHJ as blockbuster.
this time he’s very tensed bcoz of SON OF SARDAAR. he doesn’t want to lose to AJAY, after losing to Salman, Aamir, Hrithik, Akshay & even Ranbir.
so this time manipulation will be huge.

  • In this whole issue one thing which Ajay said I liked it “why they don’t ask Akshay, Amir or Salman to Change the release date of their movie”.

  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan hum dekhenge SON OF SARDAAR kyunki saath me hai Pandey ji ka waar, isliye SOS dekhna banta hai yaar… :)

  • wah ajay devgan tumne pehle se hi sos k flop ka bahana dhoondh liya…..koi ajay se pooche ki isko screen counts ki baat 1 week pehle yaad aayi isse pehle 1 saal se so rha tha kya…ajay knows that he is illogical and absurd all he is trying to do is to gain some publicity, so that sos wouldn’t turn out to be disaster….shame on u

  • sos will be sureshot flop movie. that’s why exhibitors are rejecting it and choosing. king khan’s jthj. srk rocks

salman is using ajay to compete with srk

  • @EK THA TIGER nd dnt u thing that srk’s name is also bought unneceraly. he is neigther producer, distributor nor exibitor. bt u ppl r stil shouting, even after court has proven u all wrong.

  • @SUHANA , you’re a disgrace to women on earth… Knowing nothing about the inside story, only hearing from the media… Ha(!) I must say I’ve analysed and checked again and again, and my conclusion is that indians are the race that have the cheapest mindset as compared to any other… This is what you’ll are best at, boasting without knowing anything… P.S I’m not reffering to the mass, just a handful…

  • @jitendra nigam..chal tu hi bata de ki screens ki baat ajay ko 1 hafte pehle hi kyun yaad aayi ….saal bhar se so rha tha kya sala..all educated and logical persons would agree with me,thats y he lost the case coz there is no weight or merit in his petition..cci wouldn’t even bother to call yrf..becoz there was no case…..all is this is publicity gimmick from ajay to save sos from sinking…and i really hope and pray that ajay(sos) fail and learn a lesson that BE TRUTHFUL TO URSELF AND DON’T TRY TO FOOL INNOCENT PEOPLE

  • ajay in desperation had simply lost his mind,he shouldn’t have filed this case on the first place..coz this case does not have any merits..if he was so afraid y wouldn’t he file the petition just after ett released and y didn’t he booked the screens before yrf and yrf announced release date 1 year before ajay had announced his,so y on earth he want to clash with yrf,and all the exhibitors and distributors clearly stated that they weren’t forced to sign jthj at-all,it was their choice…its first come first serve…its like u lost a toss in a match and then u r crying that y the opposition chose to bat first….he surely made a fool out of himself..SORRY AJAY BUT UR ARGUMENT WAS ILLOGICAL AND ABSURD

  • It is so funny to see some desperate ajay devgan fans still trying to defend that clown who used media to have cheap publicity for his B grade movie sos, wake up the verdict is fair and square, distributors got the movie on first come first serve basis, your ajay devgan is nothing but a dishonest cry baby

  • I dont know what Ajay is trying to accomplished. What YRF did is a business strategy. The distributors accepts their business proposition. So they have to abide by it. Now Ajay is pleading so that the distributors to break their agreement or should I say promise to YRF because didn’t make the agreement first? It’s all about FSFC basis and of course good will rapport that YRF has. As a producer if Ajay cant even plan a business strategy and can’t accept the reality of business, then he has no business producing films unless he does not business profit. Barfi gained 100cr++ in spite of little amount of screen. Why is Ajay so upset or should I say worried about? . Hope this issue resolve soon without hurting all sides of the parties involved. – IMHO.

  • SRK is king and does not need any support, he is self made star.

He is not depend on any directors including Yash Chopra and Karan Arjun.

Now, if SRK is such a huge star why the hell Yash Raj used Salman’s ETT to book single screens ?

This clearly shows that Yashraj does not have confidence in their own product (JTHJ movie) and in SRK.

They know SRK popularity is declining (atleast in India) hence they came up with single agreement for 2 movies.

I strongly believe even if yashraj had not pre-booked the screen JTHJ would have occupied 60% screen compare to SOS which
    would have occupied 40%.

Disgusting and shame on YRF – SRK team.
