The combination of Yash Raj Productions with AR Rahman and Gulzar would normally have us bursting firecrackers from the rooftop. Normally being the key word. Rahman is a genius. Period. Geniuses shouldn’t be shackled. This album sounds as if the maestro was told to toe the Yash Raj line. Hence, instead of following his heart and making wild, vibrant music, Rahman has made maple sugar sweet music. As they say, too much maple syrup makes your pancakes go all mushy. And that’s exactly what has happened.

The sole exception is Challa, whose cranberry juice tanginess is addictive. Keba Jeremiah’s guitar in tandem with Ranjit Barot’s drums coupled with Rabbi’s raw voice makes you want to listen to it on loop. It does remind you of Rabbi’s own Bulla but you tend to forget it all and just submerge yourself in the song.
Then Saans comes along. It reminds you of Do pal ki hai from Veer-Zaara (2004). Rahman has segued into Madan Mohan territory, Shreya Ghoshal sounds like a distant echo of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohit Chauhan is definitely off key. Yes, it does have violin, flute, drums and dafli combination but something is missing. Like someone forgot to put eggs in a cake mix. Great taste, but it won’t rise. Shreya’s reprise version sounds better but only just.

A dash of colour gets added to the fast paced arabesque number Ishq shava with the use of such instruments as oud, mandolin and saz. Kudos to Tapas Ray for his virtuosity. Raghav Mathur and Shilpa sing it with the zest it deserves. It reminds you of Rahman’s old numbers from down South though.

Heer is easily the best song of the album. Gulzar rewrites the Mirza-Sahiba love story and Rahman keeps the dafli, dholak based music to the minimum. Harshdeep Kaur’s salt of the Punjabi earth voice is apt for the song.

Chandresh Kudwa’s guitar work and Neeti Mohan’s vocals make Jiya re an interesting combination. This is vintage Rahman, the composer throws something unusual and you grapple with it and finally like it.

Then comes the weakest link in the chain, the title song. The multilayered orchestration doesn’t save it from being abysmal. Shakthisree Gopalan’s voice overpowers that of Javed Ali (who sounds so much like Sonu Niigaam, it’s not funny). Rahman has never goofed up on voice casting but, as they say, there’s a first time for everything. We know that even Homer had his off days.

Ranjit Barot’s drums are in the forefront in the instrumental Ishq dance. But again, it’s not a patch on Rahman’s instrumentals from Roja onwards.
The orchestration of Jab tak hai jaan (the poem written by Aditya Chopra and recited by Shah Rukh Khan), tries to capture the magic of Yeh raat hai (from Silsila), the interlude recited by Amitabh Bachchan in the midst of Yeh kahan aa gaye ham.

All-in-all, Jab Tak Hai Jaan’s OST neither has Rahman’s nor Yash Raj’s trademark sound. In trying to please everyone, the parties concerned have, like the cat who got greedy over too much cream, smothered themselves with their own indulgence. Results would have been infinitely better if only Rahman had been given a free hand…

  • Indicine team, why are you like this ? During Amitabh Bachan’s birthday,Akshay Kumar,Sachin Tendulkar & south star Mohanlal wished him. Then Dhoom 3 is the first Bollywood film to be released in IMAX format. You have not published these news. But you published an article like SRK’s first onscreen kiss.

  • If Ajay is so confident why he using SALMAN khan in his film for guest/song etc. Otherside SRK not doing any showoff for his movie coz he is confident by his acting skills and God Blessing. Now by seeing Ajay/Salman tactics i am confident with SRK movie.
