Second half of the year important for younger stars in the industry

The first half of the year, which had film releases featuring major superstars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan – had an unexpected winner. Varun Dhawan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania, also featuring the terrific Alia Bhatt, was the biggest success in the first half of 2017.

The second half has as many as 7 films featuring the younger generation of stars and the box office fate of these films will be extremely important for every actor.

Ranbir Kapoor (Jagga Jasoos – July 14): Arguably the best actor in the industry today, Ranbir returns after ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ with the much-delayed ‘Jagga Jasoos’. The promos have generated quite a bit of buzz, credit for which should almost entirely go to Ranbir for holding it all together. But films like these can only go two ways – a critically acclaimed classic that does well at the box office or a film that fails to entertain and falls flat. For terrific actors like Ranbir, one or two failures make little or no difference from a career point-of-view, but money-wise there’s plenty riding on the film. He’d also be hoping to get a success behind him before the much-awaited biggie (Dutt biopic) next year.

Tiger Shroff (Munna Michael – July 21): A week after ‘Jagga Jasoos’, it’ll be Tiger Shroff’s time to entertain the audience with the action-film ‘Munna Michael’. The promos haven’t quite managed to generate the kind of buzz that ‘Baaghi’ did, but with the Salman Khan Eid release falling flat, the masses will be waiting for ‘their kind of film’ in theatres. Surprisingly, the makers haven’t effectively used Nawazuddin Siddiqui to attract the multiplex audience and the leading lady hasn’t yet managed to make an impression. Neither has the music. ‘Munna Michael’ is important for Tiger. His last film ‘A Flying Jatt’ failed, but all of his films under Sabbir Khan’s direction have worked big. If this doesn’t work, it’ll be a major setback, which would probably make him rethink and work on his weaknesses rather than playing to his strengths in every film.

Arjun Kapoor (Mubarakan – July 28): Luck hasn’t been on his side lately. Half Girlfriend had an excellent release date, but the glorious run of ‘Bahubali 2’ changed everything. Mubarakan too was one of the few films that had two open weeks, including Raksha Bandhan. But the announcement of ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’, the preponement of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and the much-talked-about ‘Indu Sarkar’ on the same day, has left ‘Mubarakan’ will very little breathing space. Amidst intense competition, Anees Bazmee has to be at the top of his game for the film to work. Onto the more positive side of things, Arjun films been opening above expectations. During times when most films are struggling for an initial, it’s important for a film like ‘Mubarakan’ to open well and then carry good word-of-mouth.

Sidharth Malhotra (A Gentleman – August 25, Ittefaq – November 2): Sidharth’s career was going well when the ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ setback happened. The film was a washout at the box office. The actor has two films lined-up this year, an action-comedy titled ‘A Gentleman’ with Jacqueline Fernandes as his co-star and the low-budget ‘Ittefaq’ also featuring Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna. Both are important films before ‘Aiyaary’ with Neeraj Pandey next year.

Varun Dhawan (Judwaa 2 – September 29): He’s the biggest star among the younger generation of actors, probably right up there in Ranbir Kapoor’s league with the multiplex audience and ahead when it comes to the masses. His choice of films has also resulted in a strong fan-following amongst the kids, the audience that he will be catering to with a film like ‘Judwaa 2’. Varun’s consistency at the box office (both in terms of opening and lifetime business), along with the film taking forward Salman Khan’s popular ‘Judwaa’ series, has raised expectations from ‘Judwaa 2’. With an excellent release date, Varun legendary father David Dhawan as the director, ‘Judwaa 2’ is expected to perform better than ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ at the box office. The expectations are high, will the film deliver?

Ranveer Singh (Padmavati – November 17): Ranveer is loved and has a strong fan-following with the youth, but what’s been missing is consistency. But that isn’t the case under Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s direction. After ‘Ram Leela’ and a career-defining performance in ‘Bajirao Mastani’, the actor returns with the same team (with the addition of Shahid Kapoor) in the year’s most expensive film ‘Padmavati’. The period after Golmaal Again (Diwali) and Tiger Zinda Hai (Christmas) doesn’t have any big release. If that doesn’t change, ‘Padmavati’ will have enough time to perform – as long as the makers manage to release the film on the scheduled date and more importantly, it turns out to be well made.

  • There are 7 Releases,3 movies are already have look(trailer, poster, songs),apart from Songs,MM to Mubarakan all 3 movies look are not upto the mark,MM Have Chance To To Surpass Both Bcoz of mass applying, but don’t expact much…..other 3 have only poster A Gentalman, Judwaa 2 and Ittefaq.A Gentelman looking pethetic but waiting trailer,J2 Will be biggie but i will chosse Ittefaq for classic looking….Padmavati One Of The Most Awaited Movie,Name Indicates The Female Centric Movie,I Don’t know sometime i remember SLB’s Biggest Failure Movies Kites And Sawariya..Hope It Wouldn’t happen again

  • U ignored shahid kapoor completly. He has a gud roal in padmavati. Tht guy needs some luck.

  • The 2nd half of the year looks exciting with Mom, Guest Iin London, Jagga Jasoos, Munna Michael, Mubarakan, Indu Sarkar, JHMS, TEPK, Haseena Parkar, Bareilly Ki Barfi, A Gentleman, Baadshaho, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Poster Boys, Daddy, Bhoomi, Simran, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Judwaa 2, Chef, Kalakandi, Golmaal Again, Secret Superstar, Ittefaq, Drive, Padmavati, 102 Not Out, Tumhari Sulu, Parmanu, Fukrey Returns and TZH .
Out of these 7 movies I am excited only for Padmavati and Ittefaq . Padmavati brings back the team of SLB-RS-DP for the 3rd time after Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani .

  • @indicine ..why u always mention/credit ranbir WD JJ …if it fails will u den blame entirely him …unlikely
My point is Anurag stuck through it also …And KATRINA ..talk ABT professionalism …relationship issue aside ..she gave it all ..also promoting …and she lukz a million bucks …I liked JJ second promo …songs and she is big reason for DAT …so Plz kindly explain how is Ranbir is alone showered WD praise….(not sarcastic but genuinely asking)

  • First of all ranbeer kapoor is no new generation star. It has already been 10 years since debut. Mithunda, govinda, jacky sunny sanju Anil were huge and bankable star of there first 10 year all these actors have 3-4 movies in top 3 hit of the year in terms of nett collection in 80s decade and many of them have huge opener. Same goes to khan trio akki ajay hritik. Leave alone srk sunny sanju even akki, ajay used to give huge opening eg mohra kkk, jigar jaan etc. which were top 3-5 opener of the year and there hit movies does certainly mire than flop or average of bigger star of that period
Here varun’s biggest grosser is dilwale which is considered as a under performer that too because of srk in it. You are keep glorifying badtinath ki dulhania which is below flop movie of salman srk. And he is not newcomer he is already 5 years in industry though I m not expecting him to give the level of make, ddlj, rh or ghayal but or mohra but should give atleast level of pyar kiya to darna kya, rangeela , pyar to hona hi tha etc.his movies only successful because of cost. Let him do big budget movie then u will know how big star he is.

  • Jagga Jasoos – Honestly this film looks boring and sloppy . Ideally this film should have been shelved because this film has been reshot multiple times which reduces the essence and increase the budget massively . Verdict – Flop/Disaster .

Munna Michael – The trailer was pretty average for me . But it has received good response on YouTube . The response is much better than A Flying Jatt but less than Baaghi . The songs have been catchy . Main Hoon has been successful and Ding Dang looks like a typical mass number . It should well even though it looks a typical commercial potboiler . Verdict – Average/Semi Hit/ Hit .

Mubarakan – This looks a forced comedy . Anees Bazmee is not the same director which he used to be . In this decade he has made some forgettable films such as No Problem, Ready, Thank You and Welcome Back . This looks much better than HG because of Anil Kapoor, Ileana D’Cruz and entertainment to some extent . Verdict – Flop .

A Gentleman – It is difficult to say anything about this film right now without watching teaser/trailer . From the posters this looks a cheap remake of Bang Bang . It has been directed by Raj and DK who do not have a terrific record in terms of Box Office . This looks like a big budget film so if the trailer and music clicks it might get a good opening . On the other hand it can be a massive failure if the wom is not positive . Verdict – Flop/Average/Hit .

Judwaa 2 – People will be really excited for this film because of the nostalgia associated with Salman, David Dhawan and Karishma Kapoor . Till now Varun has not done anything wrong in terms of opening and box office . With BKD getting Superhit verdict people and trade will be more excited for this film . The songs should do well because they have a recall value . The opening should be impressive unless something goes wrong . The lifetime collections should beat ABCD 2 and BKD . So if all goes well this will be Varun’s Solo Highest Grosser and 2nd after Dilwale . Beating Dilwale will be very difficult . Verdict – Average/Hit/Superhit .

Ittefaq – On paper this is the smallest film . It is an official remake of 1969 Ittefaaq starring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda . It was a songless film and got tremendous critical acclaim and commercial success . Yash Chopra won the Filmfare Best Director Award for this film . It has been made on a reasonable budget . Verdict – Above Average/Hit/Superhit .

Padmavati – Last but not the least . Padmavati will release on 17th November . This film can go anywhere . I am quite confident this film will be banned in Rajasthan . This film will be much more controversial than BM . It can be the biggest failure of this year if anything goes wrong . SLB is the kind of person who takes a lot of time and this increases the pressure and expectations . If all goes well it may become the 2nd film to do 200 CR on non holiday after Bahubali 2 . According to reliable reports this is the most expensive Hindi film till now so this will attract a lot of eyeballs . Verdict – Flop/Hit/Superhit/Blockbuster . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ranbir Kapoor has the quality to be the next reigning superstar after the khans.. He needs to choose his movies wisely. The rest got talent as well but the superstar trait is missing in them.
Btw his galti se mistake song from jagga jasoos is superb.

  • not interested in these young actors all of them from filming family they do not work harder like SRK who came from no way

  • Padmavati>Judwaa2>Munna Michael>Mubarakan>Itefaq>A gentleman>Jagga Jasoos. Ranveer wins the battle, Ranbir flops the race. Please Indicine, which league does Shahid Kapoor belong to? ???

  • My most awaited are Judwaa 2 & Padmavati. Varun Dhawan is a brilliant actor who can appeal to both the classes & masses and the best of this generation (Badrinath Ki Dulhania was mind-blowing). Ranveer Singh is also great (eg: Bajirao Mastani) but he shouldn’t do useless ones(ahem: Befikre). I don’t know about Tiger Shroff’s Munna Michael but from the trailers I think it can become a decent hit(eg: like Baaghi). Rest all are just useless……Arjun Kapoor & Sidharth Malhotra are both good looking I agree but when it comes to acting they are expresssionless. Ranbir Kapoor can only do romantic roles(as if tailor-made 4 it). My predictions of Box Office collections:
    Judwaa 2 : 90-120Cr
    Padmavati : 120-170Cr
    Munna Michael : 60-80Cr
    Jagga Jasoos : 60-70Cr
    A Gentleman : 30-40Cr

  • Padmavati with Deepika is my most anticipated. I just want to watch my rani light up the screen.

  • But on a serious note, SLB needs to pray and fast for Padmavati to turn out successful commercial because of the inclusion of Shahid Kapoor. That is one certified flopper like Sohail Khan.

  • The topper among these will be Judwaa 2 & Padmavati. Varun Dhawan (only actor with 100% success rate) who can act from serious movies like Badlapur to rom-coms as Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Ranveer Singh has good potential to deliver another hit like Bajirao Mastani in 2015 and is a capable actor(but he chooses idiotic roles in between like Kill Dil & Befikre).Tiger Shroff is good as a dancer & action star rather than an actor. But Munna Michael can do wonders if this MJ Factor works well. Ranbir Kapoor is just a chocolate actor. He has a large list of flops – Roy, Bombay Velvet, Tamasha, Besharam, Saawariya, etc) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was also just average. Arjun Kapoor what is he doing ? Dont know how he became an actor…..Sidharth is a silent one…just gets along….
    My prediction:
    Judwaa 2 : Super Hit/Hit
    Padmavati : Hit
    Munna Michael : Hit
    Jagga Jasoos : Average/Flop
    Mubarakan : Flop/Disaster

  • Ranbir Kapoor is no longer part of younger stars league. He is old enough not to be part of this. Varun Dhawan will deliver in Judwaa 2 and hoping Padmavati works too. Rest are looking average movies and may tanked !!!!!!!!!!

  • Top grossers of 2017 (Hindi/Bollywood movies only) :

    Tiger Zinda Hai

    Judwaa 2

    Padmavati

    Raees / Golmaal 4

    TEPK / Badrinath ki Dulhania

    All movies (Including regional/dubbed movies):

    Baahubali

Tiger Zinda Hai / Robot 2.0

Robot 2.0 / Tiger Zinda Hai

    Judwaa 2 / Padmavati

    Padmavati / Judwaa 2

  • TZH only….

Just cant wait for the action side of bhaijaan!!!

400crs even if the movie is one time watch.

    Power of megastar!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think sid will surprise everyone wid iteefaq. As of 2014 he was ahead of all his contemporaries but brothers in 2015 hurt him alot. Kns in 2016 did some damage control but after baar baar dekho debacle pple hv started doubting him. Hope iteefaq will be a turning point in his career

  • judwaa2 superhit 120cr
    jagga jassos hit 105 cr
    A gentlement hit 70 cr
    ittefaq surprise superhit 85 cr
padmavati superhit because high budget chance toh 200cr club
mubarakan flop finish to 30 cr sure
munna michael was average word mouth of jagga jasois positive that flim will be manage 50 cr

  • Waiting for mubarakan. Arjun kapoor and Anil uncle are coming onscreen in a movie firat time. Love them ?

  • Ranbir, Varun and Ranveer are the only ones who can act and also give entertaining and good films as they do all genres and mostly succeed or at least give it a try. Tiger has a long way to go, all his films are him jumping and dancing in every scene, even a slow romantic song you see him fly kicking which just makes you get bored of him. Arjun needs more films like 2 Sates and has to improve his lazy dialect. Sid is an average actor but if he gets decent films then he is good. And out of all the films you have mentioned above, I am only excited for Jagga Jasoos, Judwaa 2, Padmavati and Ittefaq only because of Akshaye Khanna. And not to forget that the biggest Blockbuster of the year will be Tiger Zinda Hai because abhi Salman Khan zinda hai. JHMS looks fine but its not going to be any major grosser. Akshay Kumar’s films will do 150cr max. Baadshaho will do in 100 Cr+ and Golmaal 4 around 200cr. Therefore, there’s no other big film that can cross 300cr or 250cr at the box office. TZH will do 300cr+. And by the way, to deliver a 300cr film, content by itself is not enough unless its a Bahubali because a 300cr film needs Superstars like Khans and good content.
