Second half of the year important for younger stars in the industry

The first half of the year, which had film releases featuring major superstars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan – had an unexpected winner. Varun Dhawan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania, also featuring the terrific Alia Bhatt, was the biggest success in the first half of 2017.

The second half has as many as 7 films featuring the younger generation of stars and the box office fate of these films will be extremely important for every actor.

Ranbir Kapoor (Jagga Jasoos – July 14): Arguably the best actor in the industry today, Ranbir returns after ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ with the much-delayed ‘Jagga Jasoos’. The promos have generated quite a bit of buzz, credit for which should almost entirely go to Ranbir for holding it all together. But films like these can only go two ways – a critically acclaimed classic that does well at the box office or a film that fails to entertain and falls flat. For terrific actors like Ranbir, one or two failures make little or no difference from a career point-of-view, but money-wise there’s plenty riding on the film. He’d also be hoping to get a success behind him before the much-awaited biggie (Dutt biopic) next year.

Tiger Shroff (Munna Michael – July 21): A week after ‘Jagga Jasoos’, it’ll be Tiger Shroff’s time to entertain the audience with the action-film ‘Munna Michael’. The promos haven’t quite managed to generate the kind of buzz that ‘Baaghi’ did, but with the Salman Khan Eid release falling flat, the masses will be waiting for ‘their kind of film’ in theatres. Surprisingly, the makers haven’t effectively used Nawazuddin Siddiqui to attract the multiplex audience and the leading lady hasn’t yet managed to make an impression. Neither has the music. ‘Munna Michael’ is important for Tiger. His last film ‘A Flying Jatt’ failed, but all of his films under Sabbir Khan’s direction have worked big. If this doesn’t work, it’ll be a major setback, which would probably make him rethink and work on his weaknesses rather than playing to his strengths in every film.

Arjun Kapoor (Mubarakan – July 28): Luck hasn’t been on his side lately. Half Girlfriend had an excellent release date, but the glorious run of ‘Bahubali 2’ changed everything. Mubarakan too was one of the few films that had two open weeks, including Raksha Bandhan. But the announcement of ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’, the preponement of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and the much-talked-about ‘Indu Sarkar’ on the same day, has left ‘Mubarakan’ will very little breathing space. Amidst intense competition, Anees Bazmee has to be at the top of his game for the film to work. Onto the more positive side of things, Arjun films been opening above expectations. During times when most films are struggling for an initial, it’s important for a film like ‘Mubarakan’ to open well and then carry good word-of-mouth.

Sidharth Malhotra (A Gentleman – August 25, Ittefaq – November 2): Sidharth’s career was going well when the ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ setback happened. The film was a washout at the box office. The actor has two films lined-up this year, an action-comedy titled ‘A Gentleman’ with Jacqueline Fernandes as his co-star and the low-budget ‘Ittefaq’ also featuring Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna. Both are important films before ‘Aiyaary’ with Neeraj Pandey next year.

Varun Dhawan (Judwaa 2 – September 29): He’s the biggest star among the younger generation of actors, probably right up there in Ranbir Kapoor’s league with the multiplex audience and ahead when it comes to the masses. His choice of films has also resulted in a strong fan-following amongst the kids, the audience that he will be catering to with a film like ‘Judwaa 2’. Varun’s consistency at the box office (both in terms of opening and lifetime business), along with the film taking forward Salman Khan’s popular ‘Judwaa’ series, has raised expectations from ‘Judwaa 2’. With an excellent release date, Varun legendary father David Dhawan as the director, ‘Judwaa 2’ is expected to perform better than ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ at the box office. The expectations are high, will the film deliver?

Ranveer Singh (Padmavati – November 17): Ranveer is loved and has a strong fan-following with the youth, but what’s been missing is consistency. But that isn’t the case under Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s direction. After ‘Ram Leela’ and a career-defining performance in ‘Bajirao Mastani’, the actor returns with the same team (with the addition of Shahid Kapoor) in the year’s most expensive film ‘Padmavati’. The period after Golmaal Again (Diwali) and Tiger Zinda Hai (Christmas) doesn’t have any big release. If that doesn’t change, ‘Padmavati’ will have enough time to perform – as long as the makers manage to release the film on the scheduled date and more importantly, it turns out to be well made.

none of these upcoming movies are promising !!!

  • Jagga Jasoos – FLOP or Below Average (Op 9-10 Cr which is not good for a high budget Action Adventure Film)

Munna Michael – Average to Semi Hit (Opening 11-12 Cr ,Trailer was average nut songs r Hit)

I m waiting for Padmavati among these the Most due to SLB Factor followed by Judwaa 2.

    Collections Acc to me ,
    PADMAVATI > JUDWAA 2 > MUNNA MICHAEL > JAGGA JASOOS > A GENTLEMAN > ITTEFAQ > MUBARAKAN

  • Ranbir kapoor is a brilliant actor. There’s no comparison between him and other youngsters. But JJ will be a disaster unless it’s a classic.
I had high hopes from Sushant but maybe his overconfidence has led to his decline.
    But still a good actor.
Siddharth is a limited actor.Good in romcoms but not versatile.
Varun too lacks in acting skills. His performance in ABCD2 was pathetic. But he manages to entertain the audience so his shortcomings aren’t highlighted.
Arjun Kapoor can never become a star.He is a perfect example of nepotism existing in Bollywood. But I like his off screen humility.
Ranveer is the second best after Ranbir.Padmavati will be huge and bring his career back on track.
Tiger has improved a lot in past two years but audience are smart now. They will get bored of his repeated action flicks very soon.
I wish to see Shahid Kapoor ahead of these younger stars. He has everything to become a major superstar but messes everything with his choice of movies.

  • Varun is using his mind, taken holi weekend in the 1st half, in the second half taken dushera weekend which also had moharram, gandhi jayanti & balmiki jayanti attached to it…..others are fighting blindly for a normal weekends..

  • Ranbir kapoor is best actor is generation . Varun movie work becasue of low budgest he can’t deliver big on his own and he need to do some acting only, comedy not working .

  • munna michael song ding dang is big hit and this movie can take bigger opening than baaghi for sure

  • Jagga Jasoos: 80cr
    Munna Micheal: 65cr
    Mubarakan: 55cr
    A Gentleman: 67cr
    Judwaa2: 150cr
    Padmavati: 140cr

  • ranbir kapoor is the next srk rest all are useless

jagga will earn more than 150 crores others film will not even cross 100 crores

  • padmavati will be chance 250cr if contant is good.munna micheel will be flop.jadwaa 2 definetly 100cr.ittafak looking good remake a good movie and jugga jasoos eran minimum 135 cr with good story.

  • “Half Girlfriend had an excellent release date, but the glorious run of ‘Bahubali 2’ changed everything.”

Come on Indicine! You guys still can’t accept the fact that the movie was pathetic (rated 3/5 by you) and that’s why it failed? How come the Bahubali 2 wave not affect a much-smaller film like Hindi medium?

  • PADMAVATI (175-190)
    JUDWAA2 (120-140)
    JAGGA (110-120) / ITTEFAQ(60-70)

MUNNA MICHEAL CAN ALSO DO WONDERS..

OTHER THEN THAT OTHER LOOK DULL

  • Ranbir kapoor arguably the best actor in the Industry today…????

Did you mean among the young generation..???

  • I really want to believe in Jagga Jasoos, first of all because as you said Ranbir is a brilliant actor and also because most of Anurag Basu’s films were very interesting (Gangster, Life In A Metro and Barfi! are among my favorites).

Munna Michael will appeal to the masses but I also agree that producers didn’t use Nawazuddin effectively. Looks like an average/semi-hit grosser but can do better with a good wom.

Mubarakan will be a complete flop. Arjun Kapoor is a nice guy but a terrible actor.

A Gentleman could be a big surprise if the trailer is good, Sid is a good actor and he can pull off a film on his own..

Judwaa 2 is very promising but latest comedies have shown us that franchise fame isn’t enough. Housefull 3 and Welcome 2 didn’t sustain as well as expected so this one will have to be much better.

Ittefaq has very good posters, I wasn’t expecting anything from this one but it could be a sleeper hit.

Padmavati looks HUGE. It could well become the biggest blockbuster of the year among youngsters !

  • second half will be interesting for biggest like SRK Salman and Akshay
waiting for turning points can Salman comeback with TZH
SRK trumps in JHMS is important to continue rules in Bollywood akshay in good phase he didn’t want to such golden moment.

  • JJ. MUNNA MICHAEL AND MUBARAKAN all 3 sound shite!!! Masses are waiting for their kind of film come on indicine? NAWAZUDDIN for multiplex u guys shud get ur head out of ur arses!!! If thats how u dickheads think then he shud have a been a major superstar by now!!!Padmavati 180 budget? No chance Bajirao was a dreadful film pathetic to say the least!!! Ram leela miles better

  • @indicine, looks like u have problem even with the word ” flop ” … grow up !!!
    everyone has their own opinion..
besides,if I say that Judwaa 2 will flop, then it doesn’t mean it will flop for real…
    grow up !!!!

  • Nd this is important for Ajay as none of his movie realeased in first half. My box office and content exceptations are high from both(especially Baadshaho, teaser was excellent)

  • I am looking forward to Judwaa 2, a gentleman and Jagga Jasoos. these three are my pick. I think a gentleman will be a very good movie because it will be a stylish action film I think such film is best for Sidharth Malhotra. I am not at all a fan of Sidharth Malhotra but still a gentleman has the look of a slick action thriller and a film like action thriller does not require much acting.
and Judwaa 2 will be a good entertaining movie because David Dhawan is a director who makes entertaining films though it may not be a great movie but a good entertaining movie is expected from David Dhawan and two good actress with a handsome actor like Varun Dhawan and a sequel of the most successful double role film in the 90s.
and Jagga Jasoos seems to be a very good watch because the director had a very good time with Ranbir last time. yes there is a chance that the movie may not shape as well as expected but I think I want to see the movie because of VFX.

  • My personal favourite from these are Ranbir, siddarth , Varun
I also like Ranveer Singh but when he is in modern look like all his movies other than with SLB
