Sarbjit Review

Production designer turned Director Omung Kumar started his directorial innings with a box office success after Mary Kom went on to be a hit. Now he’s back with his second film, another social film about a man who was well known: Sarabjit Singh. But he has chosen to tell the story of his sister Dalbir Kaur instead. Will he able to deliver another hit and will Aishwariya Rai Bachchan finally get a hit? Time to find out.

Story: Sarbjit starts with an Indian farmer Sarbjit Singh Atwal (Randeep Hooda) who drunkenly crossing the border to Pakistan and then gets captured by the Pakistan authorities who label him as an Indian spy. He keeps languishing in jail for more than 2 decades while his sister Dalbir Kaur (Aishwariya) crusades in India to get him freed from jail. Her pleas fall into deaf ears and the Indian authorities don’t do anything. Sarbjit’s wife Sukhpreet (Richa Chadha) and his two daughters keep bearing the grief of not seeing him. We all know the fate of Sarbjit and the film toes similar lines.

Screenplay and Direction: Omung Kumar who got away with bizarre story and casting decisions in Mary Kom repeats his mistakes. He is unable to focus on a part of Sarbjit’s or Dalbir’s story and instead makes it a saga with too many high pitched melodramatic scenes. Sarbjit could have done with deft handling of the emotional scenes and subtlety would have been the way to go for such an emotionally disparaging story. Even though there’s a lot of material to sift through, the movie jogs along and is plagued by too many slow scenes.

Sarbjit Review

Sarbjit is made a lot better by the cinematography showcased in the movie. There’s a lot of maturity in the way the film has been shot. The detailing is also upto the mark, but the editing lags behind with many scenes going on for far too long. The music of Sarbjit is decent with no chart toppers.

Acting: Aishwariya is the face of the movie Sarbjit and if you had no idea about the story of the movie, you’d think she was playing the title role. Unfortunately, she is grossly miscast as Sarbjit’s sister as she is unable to put forth the tenacity and the determination in her expressions. She tries her level best but cannot even get her Punjabi diction right. The other female actress in this movie Richa Chadha shines in whatever scenes she has been given, and it makes the audience wonder if she would have been better suited for the role of Dalbir Kaur. Randeep Hooda, as Sarbjit, is fantastically cast and he shows his potential as an actor in this movie. He gets the diction, the expressions, the physical similarities and even the mental instability of the character just right. Darshan Kumar is good in his role as the Pakistani lawyer.

Conclusion: Sarbjit is a missed opportunity of a tragic count. A story like this, which has the power to showcase the trials and tribulations faced by humans due to man made borders, should have been dealt with a lot more gravitas. It suffers from such a fate because of the Bollywoodisation of this social story and because it makes this a star vehicle when it had no business being one. Even if we overlook the bad casting decision, Sarbjit just doesn’t hold fort as a movie because it lags too much and is not able to hold the attention of the viewers for far too long even with all the melodrama. Sometimes, subtlety works better than melodrama. This movie is a shining example of that.

Pros:

  • Randeep Hooda and Richa Chadha in their roles
  • The detailing of the movie seems accurate

Cons:

  • The fake unnecessary jingoism showcased
  • The gross miscasting of Aishwariya Rai Bachchan and her failure to bring the character of Dalbir Kaur to life
  • Overdose of melodrama when all it needed was subtlety
  • The slow pace of the movie

Rating: ★½☆☆☆ (0.5 extra for Randeep Hooda)

  • Feeling bad for the fact that this story wont be able to reach amount of people its shud have due to badly made movie… That Aish aunty was unbearable in Trailers also and after Jazbaa’s Overacting i knew she will spoil it… Every critics has zprais d movie overall and loved richha chadda and Randeep but hated that Aishwarya… And the Fact that they Excluded Salman’s Effort part from the story whuch actually brought this incident to light after so many years was not a Good Idea..
i hop movie becomes Hit for the Sake of Story reaching to maximum people as well as Randeep Hooda..

  • In q&a you say that critics are pseudointellectual people who think as if they are super smart and here you are yourself giving a review..
    Why???
And a suggestion- if you are giving a review to Indian viewers then please keep your English simple.. We don’t read reviews to improve our vocabulary..

  • Aishwarya ober acted in jazbaa as well. Seems like she has become over confident and arrogant as a person and that’s affecting her acting

  • All the Models turned actors can’t act and aish is a perfect example of that, i hope she will take a break and stop ruinning movies.

  • indicine azhar was better or sarbjit? if indicine saying 0.5 stars then the movie is pathetic because indicine is the most trust worthy website

indicine from next time don’t post any fake celebrity review of for any movie

  • Tabu would have been a better choice instead of Aish.
Just read Abhishek’s review of Aish’s performance in the previous page.Pocket money ke liye kya kuch karna padta hai?

  • Tabboo probably the best choice to play Dalbir Kaur. Director want make a commercial films & there he fails miserbly.

  • Disappointed.

Was planning to watch it in evening today, but now i will wait for public word of mouth.

For today, It will be X Men for me :-)

  • aishwarya is one of the most over rated actress of bollywood. She gives hammy performance in each and every film. @indicine ticket prices have not been reduced in kanpur. Why is it so??

  • Aishwarya..the most overrated and irritating actress..very happy and thankful for whoever invented d idea of trailers..saves a lot of money and headache and warns us against this type of actors

  • Left wing critics are hating it, they want Pakistan to be shown as an innocent country and India as a bad country.

  • After watching the trailer itself I knew Aish won’t be able to justify this role. Why cast a beautiful actress like Aish to play a normal Punjabi woman role!
This omung Kumar is just a 3rd class director, he has ruined two films that deserved much better.

  • its the job of the director to get the best acting out of the actors if someone over acts the director needs to see that and tell the acors to turn it down a little bit.
if the director didnt see the overacting than he is not a good diector.
a Sanjay Leela Bhansali brings the best out of every actor, or like the director of neerja brought the best acting of sonam kapoor

  • @BollyBoy Have you ever read the reviews of Ndtv and Indian express or even Anupama Chopra?.We have to sit with a dictionary besides us.
Indicine’s reviews may be off the mark at times but their writing is just perfect and least complicated

  • I agree with ur review but kindly be strict with the reviews of salman films also just bcoz his films gross huge numbers it does not mean they are good as there is no dearth of illiterate morons .If people can make crappy shows on TV like nagin and sasural simar ka trp toppers then they can also make trashy salman movies a big hit .its our nature we give our votes to corrupt leaders and then shout corruption ,same with movies we watch movies of criminal salman which assault our sensibilities and make him rich its high time his movies be rejected like earlier his movies bombed miserably and looks like sultan would begin this trend

  • First, Mr Omung Kumar messed up Mary Kom, which ran in theatres only because it was the story of “Mary Kom” whom we all have huge respect and second for Priyanka Chopra’s effort.

Now, it looks like he has destroyed another biopic.

Aishwary is a star, she is not a great actor. For movies like this you need an “actor” who can seamlessly blend in to the setting with subtle ease…….the likes of Tabu, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut falls in that category……may be to an extent Priyanka…….while the rest all do not.

I guess Mr. Kumar wants, on one hand, to have his movie look real, but he also wants to cast glamours stars like Priyanka and Aishwarya. In the process he is messing it completely, like a messed up dish……with poor direction and cast.

I hope he gets is right next time, especially his treatment of the movie and his casting.

  • @ Indicine, as the user @KingBiscuit pointed out, you should have also mentioned “poor” execution by director……the director is the captain of the ship, if he cannot get the best out of his crew then he is not worth it……..the cast is the second in line to be blamed, like, even after the best effort, if they cannot “get it” then that is a sign of lacking talent in understanding or grasping what is required exactly.

  • and she is the same Actress who acted brilliantly in Hum dil de chuke sanam and Jodha Akbar … Acting krna bhul gayi ho kya ,??????? she ruined Randeep n Richaa’s hardwork…
