Sanjay Dutt brilliant, but under-rated

Sanjay Dutt is creating quite a stir with his latest portrayal as Kancha – the monstrous villain in Agneepath. But the veteran actor, who has been around for almost 3 decades in the industry, has impressed in several roles over the years.

Some of his most popular characters are Ballu in Khalnayak, Raghu in Vaastav (which also won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor) and Kancha in Agneepath.

In Ekalavya, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, he portrayed a pot-bellied, rotund and seemingly corrupt, Inspector Pannalal Chohaar. His performance showed a completely different side of the actor. It marked him as a man – unafraid to give up the glamour of his persona and get into the skin of the character.

In Mission Kashmir, Sanjay played the role of Inayat Khan, a tough cop who deals with both terrorism and familial baggage thanks to losing a young son in a tragic accident. Dutt delivered a subtle performance with an appropriately stiff upper lip. One could even risk saying that his performance in the film, outdid that of Hrithik’s.

But one performance towers above everything else that Sanjay Dutt has done. It’s easily his most loved performance and a role that he will forever be best known for – Murli Prasad Sharma in the Munnabhai series. He played the role of a gangster with a heart-of-gold, absolutely flawlessly.

Unfortunately, a quick look at his filmography also reveals that the actor has appeared in several mediocre films. Films that he likely agreed to do, as a favor to many of his friends in the industry.

  • even he did great job in mindless comedy too..his n govinda’s jodi was hillarious although it didn’t get notice much..i am not a big fan of Sanjay but his manrism n acting surely deserve much more than he gets..

  • @Ather, gr8 pick, I would jus like to add some more films beside “Kroadh”, namely “Naam”, “Aatish”, “Saajan”, “Kaante”, “Haseena Maan Jayegi”, “Shootout at Lokhandwala”, “Parineeta”, “Munna Bhai Series”, “Vaastav”, “Khalnayak”, “Pitaah” and “Sadak”. Sanjay Dutt has done variety of roles with major hits to blockbusters in all generes. One of the most versatile actor in the industry.

  • I would say he did not get what he deserved. Just have a close look to his roles, he performed being under skin of characters. I do not know why he is ignored for that long except few occassaion. He is one of the classic actor who really deserve block buster opening at box office but what to do with our janta, saying something here but when his movie release, few go to watch movie. so sad. a finest actor has been ignored forever.

  • Well I dont think I am going to be forgetting Sajay’s entries in Luck either. He took my mind away from the mediocre performance Imran Khan was giving
