Salman ‘Remake’ Khan? Not really!

After the success of Wanted, Ready and Bodyguard, Salman Khan has been labeled as someone who only acts in remakes of south Indian hits. He has been accused of playing it safe, by doing films that have already proven to be hugely successful at the ticket-window.

“King of Remakes”, “Remake Khan” are names that are often used to bring him down. But a quick glance at some of the films that he has done in the last 5 years, reveals a different story.

  • Salaam-e-Ishq (2007) – Original script
  • Partner (2007) – Inspired by Hollywood film Hitch
  • Marigold (2007) – Original script
  • Saawariya (2007) – Original script
  • God Tussi Great Ho (2008) – Inspired by Hollywood film Bruce Almighty
  • Hello (2008) – Based on Chetan Bhagat’s Novel
  • Heroes (2008) – Original Script
  • Yuvvraaj (2008) – Original Script
  • Wanted (2009) – Remake of Telugu film Pokiri
  • Main Aurr Mrs Khanna (2009) – Original Script
  • London Dreams (2009) – Original Script
  • Veer (2010) – Original Script
  • Dabangg (2010) – Original Script
  • Ready (2011) – Remake of Telugu film Ready
  • Bodyguard (2011) – Remake of Malayalam film Bodyguard
  • Ek Tha Tiger (2012) – Original Script
  • Dabangg 2 (2012) – Original Script
  • Sher Khan (2012) – Original Script

To sum it up, Salman has been a part of 3 remakes in the last 5 years, 2 films inspired by Hollywood movies and 13 films with original scripts. What’s more, none of his upcoming films are remakes.

Also, it’s not Salman alone who has appeared in remakes. Have a look!

  • Shahrukh Khan – Don was a remake of an Amitabh Bachchan classic with the same title. The SRK produced Billu, which featured the actor in an extended special appearance, was also a Malayalam remake.
  • Aamir Khan – One of Aamir’s biggest hits in the last decade – Ghajini – was a Tamil remake.
  • Akshay Kumar – Has appeared in 3 remakes in the last 5 years – Khatta Meetha, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Heyy Babyy. His upcoming film Rowdy Rathore too is a remake of Telugu hit Vikramarkudu.
  • Hrithik Roshan – Who once vowed to never be a part of remakes, will be seen in Agneepath which again is an official remake of  an Amitabh Bachchan classic with the same title. To be fair to Hrithik, the story seems to have been changed and the treatment is very different too!
  • Ajay Devgan – One of Ajay’s biggest solo-hits too is a remake – Singham!

Remakes DO NOT guarantee success and attributing Salman’s success to remakes alone is unfair! Do tell us what you think, in the comments section below.

Update: A few are asking about Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick. Agreed that Kick is a remake of a Telugu film. But it’s not 100% confirmed yet. Shirish Kunder was supposed to direct it, but he has now backed out. Unconfirmed reports say, Surender Reddy who directed the Telugu version will be directing the Hindi one too.

Still, it’s unfair to single-out Salman Khan, when half the industry is remaking films. Rowdy Rathore, Agneepath, Ek Deewana Tha, Bol Bachchan, Son of Sardar, Players etc are all remakes.

  • I don’t think that Salman Khan only acts in remakes, because there are lots of other actors who do to. I think he’s labelled as “remake khan” because some of his biggest hits such as Bodyguard, Ready and Wanted were remakes. I am actually a big fan of Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan so it doesn’t make a difference to me when one beats the other. I can’t wait for Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2, Yash Chopra’s Next, Chennai Express, Talaash and Dhoom 3. All of them are going to be huge blockbusters and will collect more than 150 crores when they release

  • I forgot to say that people always forget about Salman Khan’s other huge hits like Dabangg and Partner because they were either Hollywood remakes or original scripts. And Indicine, you forgot to mention Salman Khan’s next few films like Kick and No Entry Mein Entry.

  • I believe i don’t need to say anything, because you have already proved it. In year 2009, three movies were released Wanted, Mr. and Mrs. Khanna, and London Dreams. From this only one worked and guess which one was it? Wanted; the remake. In year 2010 two films were released Veer and Dabbang. Veer fairly just did good, and Dabbang followed the same Tamil formula, in which a hero never gets to be beaten up, and he only beats others. Year 2011 two movies and both remakes.
I am not saying that he is the Remake King. If we remember then he has given the big blockbuster way back in 1994. I just want to say this that all actors have different kinds of qualities, and honestly we all know this fact. It is stupid to just sit around and talk who is better. It is just like comparing physics with chemistry, biology with maths. It is ridiculous.
Aamir khan takes time to do his work, whereas srk khan give a good product without consuming time. So, I would say aamir shouldn’t make movies quickly, and srk shouldn’t take too much time to do a movie. We saw what happened with Ra one. Srk has this chrismatic appeal who will draw numbers in and the best example of it is I think so Rab ne Bana di Jodi. That movies was just shot in 40 days and was a blockbuster according to my sources.
I believe that the movie is mostly about the story which audience wants to see if you have a good story like 3 Idiots had then it will become a huge success. Like in Magal Pandey Aamir spent so much time to make that movie and it just did fair at the box office. Which I believe should have broken records.
Like Chak De India, Srk didn’t promoted that movie and that movie I first believed that it won’t work, but the Srk’s acting made it work. If you will do a little different it will either be rejected or will be appreciated by masses.
and comparing any actor especially these three khans would just be stupid and unfair.

  • @indicine tht right and even u 4get about ajay devgan singham tht is also a remake 4rm nw onwards whch ever movie salman wil do tht all wil be blockbuster sallu rocks

  • @indicine even srk did a dilip kumar classic devdas tht also a remake in that srk spoilt the classic movie by his acting

  • every single actor acted in remakes.be it salman , aamir or shahrukh or anybody…even rajnikant acted in so many bollywood remakes..shahrukh khan’s mnik was borrowed from forrest gump & rainman..his daar & baazigaar were remakes…chak de india was borrowed 4rm moghty ducks & miracle on ice..swades was a remake of a kannada movie chigurida kanasu…paheli was a remake of kannada film nagamandala…one 2 ka 4 was remake of one good cop……even otherwise also he did some remakes including official one’s don . billu & devdas etc….aamir did ghajini…aajay did singham & akki also did so many remakes of some south indian films..so many…actually akki is the king of remakes…..everybody acts in remakes…some does well some don’t but thats how it is….

    we love entertaining cinema………….

  • @khaleed: you have posted wrong information…actually salman khan’s “yuvraaj” was a copy of justin hoffman and tom cruise starer “rain man” not MNIK and bazzigar was inspired from a book named “kiss before dying” it was not copied nor borrowed from any movie..its true that sharukh’s character was little bit like tom hanks’s character in forrest gump…!!

and its really waste of time to discuss about which actor remakes and which actor does original films..its about the film which we see in theatre in that particular day…its pointless to talk about this things..and obviously salman khan is not popular for his remake films only..he was popular for removing his shirts before releasing of wanted,ready,bodyguard..! he is a mega star..!! I am the biggest fan of sharukh khan ..but truth is truth and we should not deny it…!! class lamba hogaya..??

  • Salman is “Re-make” Khan & will remain so.

Salman tried to make original dream project called VEER. even wrote it. Huge FLOP.

    Salman tried Yuvraaj. another FLOP.

Prabhu Deva decided to make scene-2-scene remake of Wanted, a telugu blockbuster. Got Salman in it & it worked.

since than Ready & Bodyguard. all remakes after remakes after remakes of the blockbustes in tamil, Malayalum, tamil.

Anything original Salman touches like Ra.One or Don-2, its a FLOP just because Salman is in it. He cannot carry a film into the safe waters around 80+crores BO collections by his sheer presense & acting like SRK did with Ra.One unless he is in a re-makes.

Its a fact. & will remain so.

Because Ek Tha Tiger is an Original product with FLOP director. It will be a FLOP

so will SHER KHAN. It will be a FLOP.

Remake Khan had his BB run at the boxoffice of 2 years after rest of the 2000 decade as a FLOP actor. His course is running out now.

Dabanng was an anomaly with rustic flavor writing around salman’s perfonality by visionary tactics of Abhinav kashyap. It worked.

Even Kashyap walked out of Dabanng-2. It will be an AVERAGE at BO. mark my words.

    • hey khan I just read it out what u said before 6 years and i think you have been proved wrong. The films to which you said in past before released that they will be flop now they are Blockbusters of this decade (dabbang 2 ,ek tha tiger) and added some more AllTimeBlockbusters now ‘bajrangi bhaijaan, sultan’ and superhit PRDP. they all are originals. I didn’t give you reply if you didn’t wrote at last in your comment ‘mark my words’.

  • Dude, do your research before writing. Yuvvraaj was taken from Rain Man. Ek tha tiger is getting its story mostly from Sunny Deol’s Hero.Saawariya is a copy of White Nights.

  • After the release of Ra1, 2nd day Ra1 did a business of over 23crs highest single day business, all salman fans were saying that with double the prints and publicity and tamil/telegu versions Ra1 could only beat Bodyguard by 1.5 or 2 crs which was expected as the movie released with 3400 prints and in all other languages. An article came up here as well as on KOIMOI that no body stopped Salman from releasing bodyguard in 3400 screens and nobody stopped salman from releasing bodyguard in other languages, at the end of the day Business is what all matters.

I would like to say the same thing here Nobody is stopping SRk from making Masala Movies or remakes or whatever. Its the business that’s what matters at the end of the day and Salman is a clear winner here. Nobody can beat him at least in INDIA. SRk will have to keep trying to match up with Salman these days. and now look at don 2 looks difficult to even cross 100 crs.

Ra1 couldn’t break first day record of Bodyguard, First week record of Bodyguard and overall business of Ready. Now I know a lot of SRk fans are going to counter my opinions by saying that SRK is making difference in the cinema..hehheh what difference can you make by coping few Hollywood movies into 1 and called it RA1. Special effect were of a C grade Hollywood movie are about same as Ra1. Using a lot of adult jokes in a movie targeted for kids. Come on who r u kidding with. Nobody is stopping SRk from making Masala movies, its the business that’s what matters and SRK keep dreaming.

  • @ Salman Rocks

    your argument is completely flawed.

Ra.One released on DIWALI day friday. DIWALI pooja always interrupts its collection.

Bodyguard is released on EID Day. EID prayers or festivities NEVER interrupt the collection. infact, people are starved for a superstar movie release after 4 fridays of Ramzan saw no release even 6 fridays leading up to Ramzan.

    Be realistic.

If Ra.One releases on EID day. It will guarantee 26-28 crores day 1 collection on the hype alone.

Salman is very very lucky with EID release date.

I hope SRK releases one on EID. Its the best day to have maximum collections. no interruptions & no major releases in previous 4 fridays.

  • Indicine u forgot to mention that..almost all orignal scrip films..of Salman doomed at BO.
and ..There is a Salman version of DON to..

Jab humhare dhande mein..saari films ek ke baad ek flop hone lagjaaye ..toh yeh smjh jaana chaiye..ki its time to Remake South Films…

  • @ salman rocks

salman films can never ever be released in south. Salman has ZERO fans in south unlike SRK. South India already got their own versions of Salman called Rajinikanth etc. etc.

Salman already makes south indian blockbusters as he plays safe after YUVRAAJ & VEER utter FLOP Show. He is lallu & reason why 2000-2008 he was complete FLOP.

SRK films also suffer from huge negative publicity & media campaign. There is a huge anti-SRK media. also shiv sena MNIK fiasco. Salman never struggles this way. He is forgiven for aish abusing, killing foot path sleeper etc etc because he comes from celebritiy family.

SRK is truly self made KING. Salman is hugely overrated. Ready was garbage. Bodyguard was even bigger guarbage. both boring. Dabanng is the only decent movie he game in 2 years.

Ra.One was still entertaining till end. Don-2 is immensely thrilling.

  • @ indicine team

you wrote “re-make dont guarantee success.”

    partly true.

“Regional BLOCK BUSTERs remakes guarantee you success. 100%” Salman before Telugu remake WANTED was washed up FLOP has been superstar. WANTED invented RAJNIKAANT Salman khan of North India.

Salman continues to copy RAJINEEKANTH Style remake after remake after remake of Blockbusters of telugu, tamil, malayalam with regional directors too with scene-2-scene remake too. no improvement. Only very popular “item number” inserted to make sure maximum PAISA VASOOL for cheap interior audience. its perfect & its working despite being content of the movie garbage.

SRK on the other hand was given ENTHIRAN with full on adult romance with AISH with SHANKAR. RAJNI did SRKs rejected shankar movie.

instead SRK did a Children movie with NO Romance NO comedy NO real Drama that can engage audience. Result still 120+ crores HIT. Its a huge risk. substitute Aamir, Sallu, Ajay, Akshay in RA ONE with no chemistry with lead pair. Its a sure 50-60 crores FLOP.

SRK with risky kiddy movie made it a HIT literally on his own.

  • Ay babiez it doesn’t matter what you think….
The must see moviez in 2012
    “Shanghai” Emran hashmi,
    “Tezz” Ajay devgan
    “Rowdy Rathore” Akshay Kumar
    “Race 2” Saif Ali Khan
    and
The most popular movies of 2012 is Once upon a time in mumbai sequel, Ek tha Tiger, Talaash, Kick, and the one n only Sher Khan….

  • Bodyguard director Siddique never had a flop film in his career. All his films in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu were blockbusters . So u can’t credit salman alone 4 the success of bodyguard. Siddique told in an interview that he watched more than 100 hindi movies before directing Bodyguard.
