Salman Khan’s South Remakes: Top 10

Remaking successful South Indian Hit Masala movies in Hindi has emerged as the easiest formula to huge box office openings and a safe bet for getting the best return on investment these days. The whole idea of remaking a script allows for the story to be adapted into a larger setting and the movie to be marketed to a newer audience.

The super success of Aamir Khan’s ‘Ghajini’ in 2008 triggered an unseen trend of remakes and Salman Khan’s ‘Wanted’ in 2009 further consolidated it.

But the fact is that the influence of South Indian Cinema on Bollywood and vice-versa had always been there. It is only now, largely due to the media, that we are seeing official remakes where makers are openly acknowledging the source of the story.

Salman is probably the most successful Bollywood star today in remaking South Indian movies. Here is the list of 10 best remakes done by Salman Khan in the order of their prominence in his career.

Salman Khan Tere Naam - Wanted

Salman Khan Tere Naam – Wanted

Wanted: This is the movie which is largely responsible for the current euphoria of Masala Action movies in Bollywood. It brought Salman Khan back in the top league and most importantly revived the single-screen theatres in many parts of the country. Wanted is a remake of Telugu blockbuster movie ‘Pokiri’ directed by Puri Jagannath starring Mahesh Babu and Ileana D’ Cruz. Before directing the Hindi version, Prabhu Deva remade the movie in Tamil with Vijay and Asin.

Tere Naam: Arguably his best performance, Tere Naam revived Salman’s career in a big way in 2003. Directed by Satish Kaushik, it is a remake of Tamil film ‘Sethu’ featuring Vikram in the lead. Bhoomika Chawla made her Bollywood debut with this film, which boasts of a memorable soundtrack composed by Himesh Reshammiya.

Biwi No 1: Directed by David Dhawan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Biwi No 1 is a remake of 1995 Tamil film Sathi Leelavathi featuring Kamal Hassan, Ramesh Aravind, Kalpana and Heera. Apparently, Kamal Hassan’s role was portrayed by Anil Kapoor in the Hindi version. Released during the Cricket World Cup in 1999, Biwi No 1 became the highest grosser of the year.

Judwaa: Another David Dhawan comedy, ‘Judwaa’ silenced Salman’s critics in 1997 as it emerged as one the biggest hits of the year. It featured Khan in a double role for the first and only time in his illustrious career. Judwaa is a remake of Telugu blockbuster ‘Hello Brother’ featuring Nagarjuna, Ramya and Soundarya. The Telugu movie itself was inspired from the Jackie Chan’s action comedy ‘Twin Dragons’.

Bodyguard: This action romantic movie directed by Siddique is the third remake of the director’s own 2010 Malayalam flick of the same name starring Dileep and Nayantara, the second being 2011 Tamil film Kaavalan featuring Vijay and Asin. Kareena Kapoor was paired opposite Salman and Bodyguard went on to be the biggest grosser of 2011 and broke numerous records.

Ready: Starring Salman and Asin, it is the 4th remake of 2008 Telugu movie ‘Ready’ featuring Ram and Genelia D’ Souza. Before the Hindi version, the film was remade in Kannada as ‘Raam’ by Punith Rajkumar and then in Tamil as ‘Uthama Puthiran’ starring Dhanush and Genelia D’Souza. The hindi version was directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by T-Series, ‘Ready’ became the second biggest grosser of 2011.

No Entry: Although Anees Bazmee’s No Entry is the biggest hit of 2006 and one of the funniest comedies in recent times, it is down in this list as Salman is not the main lead in the movie. Also starring Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Esha Deol, Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitley, No Entry is the remake of 2002 Tamil Film ‘Charlie Chaplin’ starring Prabhudeva and Prabhu Ganeshan. The Tamil film’s commercial success led to remakes into Telugu (Pellam Oorelithe), Kannada (Kalla Malla Sulla) and Malayalam (Happy Husbands).

Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega: Inspired from 1995 Hollywood Film ‘While You were Sleeping’, Priyadarshan directed 1997 Malayalam blockbuster ‘Chandralekha’ featuring Mohanlal. Next year the movie was remade into Telugu by Krishna Vamsi with the same name starring Nagarjuna, Ramya and Isha Koppikar. Two years later, producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Raj Kanwar combined together and ‘Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega’ was made with Salman Khan, Rani Mukherji and Preity Zinta. Shahrukh Khan made a special appearance. The film was a moderate success at the ticket window.

Kyonki: This Priyadarshan’s movie is a remake of the 1986 Malayalam film Thalavattam directed by Priyadarshan himself. Featuring Salman, Kareena and Rimi Sen ; ‘Kyonki’ was appreciated for Salman’s sensitive performance but the movie failed at the box office.

Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam: Starring Shahrukh, Salman and Madhuri Dixit, ‘Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam’ is the remake of Tamil movie ‘Thotta Chinungi’ by the same director K.S.Adhiyaman. The Tamil movie featured Karthik, Raghuvaran and Revathi in the lead. The movie took 5 years to make and was finally released in 2002 to an average response.

It comes as no surprise that Salman’s next two releases ‘Mental’ and ‘Kick’ are also South remakes. While ‘Mental’ is a remake of Telugu movie ‘Stalin’ starring Chiranjeevi ; ‘Kick’ is a remake of Telugu movie of the same name featuring Ravi Teja.

  • Half his career? Then what about films like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Saat Saat Hain, Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger etc etc. Some of the biggest hits of his career were originals.

Even if you take a film like Wanted, it was Salman’s charisma that made it a blockbuster. Put any other actor and it would have flopped big time.

  • is this something to be proud of??????our cinema quality is degrading with such cheap remakes.
if u hv guts make some original ones.

  • @Nikita: he is in the industry because of south remake? then what is maine pyar kiya, hum apke hain kaun, Dabanng,ETT, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam,Hum sath sath hain,Pyar Kiya too Darna Kiya ,Andaz Apna Apna and the list continue.

  • I wont blame salman if he does remake in his initial part of his career, but now he is successful star now. Why can’t he select some good stories and script and use his stardom for good movies atleast once n a while. Remakes are popularising south movies and reducing south indian viewers. It’s high time that salman shud do good movies else he will be erased frm new generation mind. Srk and ranbhir is the only stars who able to win ppls heart without masala genre, even aamir and hrithik need gajini and agneepath to make it big.

  • shame on bollywood filmmakers they lack originality they either copy hollywood films or remake south indian films. south indian films are much better than bollywood.

  • My fav from above list is ofcoz Wanted. @akram. For ur information Wanted is remade from Pokkiri, a telugu movie, was the biggest blockbuster ever, ranned for 300 days in many theaters. Later, Pokkiri has been remade in both Tamil and Kannada, there too it was a huge blockbuster. Only in Bollywood it was limited to super hit coz of Salman dipping stardom at that point of time. Now ur telling Wanted was a hit jst coz of Salman and nobody could do justice to it ?. it seems, ur completely out of the mind

  • Indicine
thank you by proving that Salman is nothing without south remake

‘Remaking successful South Indian Hit Masalamovies in Hindi has emerged as the easiest formula to huge box office openings and a safe bet for getting the best return on investment these days. The whole idea of remaking a script allows for the story to be adapted into a larger setting and the movie to be marketed to a newer audience.’

very first line of this article proved that salman is cheap actor and works for money

  • Mere dushman samajh rahe the main…ab kabhi laut ke na aaonga…
Ek ghoom nami ka samunder hai, usi mein ja ke doob jaonga!
Abhi baki meri kahani hai…saari duniya ko jo sunani hai…
    Mujhe pehchano…dekho main hoon kaun…
Aa raha hoon palat ke, main hoon xzone !!!!
    ………:P

Now morons (salman fans) like “navin”,”hritik”,”nvs”,”sachin11″…etc will start finding the ways to escape away…..lol…

  • look at the faces of those moronic salman fans……as soon as indicine published the truth of their “crapstar” “remake khan”….they made a list of all famous h/w movies and declared that srk has copied all those movies….
but these demented souls never know that their “crap star” has even copied bhojpuri films too….
the historical hit of his career “hum aapke hain kon” was a copy of a blockbuster bhojpuri film “nadiya k paar”….now …wat ll u say morons…
so conclusion is…that he was never been an actor…instead of it what he did…is just copied all the “south”,”bhojpuri”,”punjabi”,”gujrati”,”bengali” and all the c-grade stuff….:P

  • does the art of copy pasting a thing of acknowledgement ??? what’s wrong with indicine ?? now you will also make an article for salman’s south remakes ?? half of his career is on south remakes !!! why can’t you make an article about why salman is relying on south remakes, why is he not trying other genres !!!! plz indicine team, my request, make an article on this too please !!!!!!!!

  • @xzone: Read the above comment from “salman khan fan” don’t argue without logic you have answer just post it SRK all movies copies from hollywoood movies and some from original hindi movie.

  • Nadiya ke paar was made by Rajshri Production and Hum Apke hain kaun also the same production what is the big deal?

  • Salman ek Tsunami ka naam hai, jo box office ko crash kar deta hai, 1989-Maine Pyar Kiya, 1991-Sajan, 1994-Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, 1998-Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, 1999-Hum Saath Saath Hai, 2005-No Entry, 2010-Dabang, 2011-Bodyguard, 2012-Ek Tha Tiger, 2013-??? Whatever remake or original. Haters jal kar raakh ho jaonge. By the way good job by Abhishek Sharma & Indicine.

  • @Aki…first i wud request u to learn the difference between remakes and copying some scenes…..a remake means buing the right of a movie and keep all the things same e.g. storyline and script…which ur sallu bhiajaan do…
On the other hand ….copying some scenes is not a big deal….i ll request u to go and watch all those hollywood movies ..which are claimed as original scripts for srk’s movies by ur beloved “salman khan fan”…there is no any evidence..that srk has worked in a remake of any hollywood movie..except copying some scenes…..everybody tries to copy some famous scenes…
even aamir starer “mela” was a mixture of movies like “sholay”,”mera gaon mera desh” etc…but that was not a remake..
but ur “remake khan” ia an exception..who used to copy paste…:P

  • @xzone: same I can say too salman remake as well go and watch original movie and see the difference in Hindi Movie done by Salman lots of changes in each movie and by the way for your information orginal movie like Dabanng and ETT earn more success then remake 10-times more success then ALL SRK MOVIES.

  • A lot of fans complain about sallu remakes, let’s be honest he has never been appreciated as an actor even working for 2 decades, he has always been in shadows of shahruk or amir as an actor when he was in his prime even actors like Hrithik and now Ranbir have always been rated by directors, industry people and bollywood fans as better actors then salman, so salman has never achieved that respect or achievements as an actor, so why would he change and stop remaking south films when there is nothing left to achieve as an actor, why would he gamble his starpower when there is nothing left to achieve anything in his career except money,

Without remakes his success ratio is 18%

With remake his succes ratio is almost 95-100% why would he change that especially when there is nothing left to gain in his career except making money.

Salman tried hard to impress when he was young made some fantastic films even his haters can’t deny that but never could impress audiance or industry people and his films were flopping in numbers(he has more then 50 flop films you can check in google) so now he doesn’t care and decided to make easy money using shortcut.

He will always be remembered as superstar and lately for his Boxoffice, so guyz let him leave the way he wants let him do films which he wants at end of the day enjoy, coz very few years have left in his career and one day fans are going to miss him even his haters will realise that coz you appreciate things when they go away from you so guyz just enjoy and chill rather then fight with each other, we should appreciate every actor who tries hard to entertain us, there are lots of different movies now which should be enough for bollywood fan to be satisfied then fight/complain everytime!

  • To all Srk fans people like Salman movies remake or original what is the problem with you guys? SRK original movies are struggling to cross 100-crores SRK acting itself is copy of Big B and Dilip Kumar and he admitted that.

  • @aki…hahaha..u r so innocent…one can’t even dare to copy mr. amitabh bachchan and deelip ji…it requires a lot of skills…and one can expect it only frm srk, not frm ur “bald”, “non-actor” sallu….did u forget “devdas” and “don”…..only srk can take those movies as a challenge…but ur “crapstar” sallu can’t even play the role of “chunni babu” of devdas …forget the lead role…
    coming to seen-by-seen copy….movies like hahk,wanted,tere naam ,ready…they are copy-paste of their original version…go nd watch them…
and if salman movies are earning bcoz of these remakes …then y u guys are not accepting that it is remakes…which made him a “superstar” from a “flopstar”…..:P
