Salman Khan’s Jai Ho has opened well at the domestic box office, but the start was way below trade expectations. After Dhoom 3’s record-breaking opening in December, most in the trade were expecting a 25 crore+ opening as the film released on a record number of screens in India. However, the official figures for Friday is 17.55 crore on a total capacity of more than 40 crore.
When every Salman Khan film since Dabangg (2010) has opened well, why hasn’t Jai Ho – with good reviews and reports – taken a flying start? Below are a few reasons why we think the film disappointed on day 1.

1. Unexciting Promos: There is a saying in the industry that the audience decides whether to watch a film or not, depending on how they like the first trailer. Jai Ho was expected to be different from other Salman films, but the trailer gave the audience an impression that it is a typical run-of-the-mill action-masala film. Also there were way too many mass-pleasing action scenes, due to which the family audience probably decided to give the film a skip.
2. Music: Sajid-Wajid failed big time with the music of Jai Ho. While the album had a couple of good songs, none of those went on to top charts. In the recent past, every Salman Khan film has had a hugely popular song or two - Dabangg (Munni Badnaam, Chori Kiya Re Jiya.. others), Ready (Character Dheela, Dhinka Chika), Bodyguard (Teri Meri, I love you), Ek Tha Tiger (Mashallah, Saiyaara), Dabangg 2 (Fevicol Se).
3. Excess of action masala films: It’s a catch-22 situation for Salman. If he does ‘classy’ films, his hardcore fan-base in the interiors of India might walk out of the theatre disappointed. At the same time, he is well aware of the fact that the ‘masala entertainer’ genre has been done to death. Just before the release of Akshay Kumar’s Boss, Salman had said “This space (masala films) will die totally. I think this was a beautiful format when we had films like Wanted, Dabangg etc. Now everybody has overdone it so much that it might die away. These kinds of films are popular but the creativity is becoming less… It seems the same stuff is happening. I don’t know which genre will click now”. However, what has come as a shocker is the opening of Jai Ho in Salman strongholds like Rajasthan, C.P, C.I and UP. The film was expected to shatter records in these circuits, but failed to do so on Friday. Its time to mix it up a bit and signing films with directors like Shimit Amin is a step in the right direction for Salman.
4. Mediocre Production values: Multiplex tickets cost a bomb. Unless a film has high-production values and has that big-film feel like Dhoom 3 or Krrish 3 or Ek Tha Tiger, the audience will think twice before spending Rs 2,000 for a movie outing with family. The release of Dhoom 3 a month before Jai Ho could also have had an impact on business.
5. Leading lady: Both the media and the audience have been way too harsh on Daisy Shah. Having said that, she doesn’t really belong to that group of quintessential Bollywood leading ladies.
6. Release Date: Each of Salman’s last 5 blockbusters have released during the holiday season (Eid / Christmas) or just after the conclusion of IPL (Ready). Jai Ho didn’t get a perfect release date. In fact, with Republic Day falling on January 26th, it was a normal release for the film.
7. Over-dependence on Salman: “The audience only come to watch Salman” – both the trade and probably Salman himself took this statement way too seriously. You can’t blame them either as each of his last 5 films have not only been hits, but major blockbusters. That, however, might have back-fired big time with Jai Ho – the film was a south Indian remake, directed by his brother (just like his last film Dabangg 2), music composed by Sajid-Wajid, new leading lady – the film had absolutely nothing to excite the audience apart from the presence of Salman. When the superstar is over-exposed on television and provides enough and more entertainment with his antics on the small screen.. the audience need a little more incentive to pay those hard-earned bucks on his movies.
Fine analysis, I would like to add few more.
1. Owaisi asking his supporters to boycott the movie, it has impacted business at least by 1cr.
2. Sohail Khan- His poor direction was apparent from the promos, I like Salman but can’t understand why he keeps on trying his useless brother. Look at the recent history whenever he has collaborated (Actor or director) with Sohail film has failed miserably.

JAI HO is the bestest film in recent years.. No other film can match the class and standard of JH.. This is SALMAN’s best film till date at par with Tere Naam.. Thankyou Salman for not giving us masala flick, instead you gave us a film which will be remembered for years and years to come..
Films like JAI HO are made once in 5-6 years.. Guys dont miss watching it tomorrow at a theatre near you.. And yes “Agar aap ki kisine help ki hai toh aap use thankyou mat kahiye, instead waisi hi help aap teen logon ki karen aur unse bhi kahen ke wo bhi teen-teen logon ki help karen.. Aisa karne se desh mein kise bhi problems face ya mehsus nahi karni padegi”
SALMAN & SOHAIL KHAN, I salute you for making this film.. I dont give a damn about collections because the ticket rates are almost half the price of Dhoom3/ChennaiExpress and these two crap films have crossed the 200cr mark which itself is a big shame.. Proud that JAI HO is a film at par with 3idiots and should be watched by every single person. Its getting class reviews from all over the world. Never heard before public response..

Create records when release your movie in festive period,,, out of it you r back to being just a human,,, in Bollywood all top 5 actors-3 khans hrithik ranbir can all give top grossers with movie releasing in festive period and having catchy promos and music,,,

Great analysis. I agree with all the points except 5th. Point number 6, 1 and 2 were major factors. It can still pick up over the weekend, over 60-65 crore weekend is still on the cards. Real test begins from Monday, since almost all of his recent blockbusters collected huge in first week itself with the help of holidays and his star power, but dropped down heavily from 2nd week. If it sustains over the weekdays, then it might become his 2nd highest grosser behind ETT, I don’t see it getting past ETT though.
People are liking Craps like Doom3, Krrish3 … They have no time for good films like Jai ho.. My kick to the stupid audience.

Jai Ho had a slow start at the box office due to low promotions.
But the 17 crore first day is ONLY due to Salman’s presence.
No holiday release. No top heroine. No great/popular director. No great songs. No tributes. No franchise.
Salman and just Salman!
No other actor can give 17 crore with such a film release.

i m a salman fan but u cant give out excuses. what about akshay. why dont you give out excuses when his movies dont do well.most movies he works with a new or flop director, no big banner, no big heroine(didnt even have one in boss), no hit music in boss,ouatimd,special26, low production values and he doesnt even have one holiday most of time. plus he comes after every 2 months. if he came after year and a hald , hype for his movies would be higher

Guy’s indicine are showing us non holiday opening records where jai ho stands at fifth position with 17.55 cr at normal day. No festive season like Christmas, diwali, summer. so they are at top 4 position. Just chill guys , WOM of jai ho is like dabangg & 3 idiots. So go and watch the movie.

Don’t fall into trolls by Paglapurians. Even when Jai Ho collected 50 Crores on day 1. The would have still tried to badmouth Salman Khan and his films. It happened with Dhoom 3 and K3.

My review about Jai Ho !!!! :
The first 15-20 minutes I felt Sohail trademark of boredom. I feared he may have spoiled the entire movie but Thankfully he surprised me. This is Sohail’s best direction n Salman’s one of the best. The trump card or most influential character in the movie is Tabu. She reaffirms audience that this is not regular Salman Khans run of the mill or masala movie n Whats most pleasing is Salman proves that by more intensity specially when he goes to Danny’s place with Tabu. I wish it had 3 changes:
* A well know Heroine or atleast a better looking lady than Daisy.
* Salman should stop charity n experiment with other music directors. Sajid-Wajid has taken things for granted, they should keep in mind that they are directing music score for India’s biggest superstar. Music does have an impact.
* Most importantly should have release on a festival or holiday. Not a single holiday advantage apary from regular weekend.
Also, every scene have some known face from bollywood or television. Its good to give work to those who are struggling but not at cost of your over all look of the movie.
The movie is made with noble n honest intensions and definitely makes you thing about it. Salman Khan roars in the character of Jai n no other actor wud have carried it the way he did. Tabu is one of the finest actress. Sana Khan is surprising n makes an impact with her role. Danny have not much to do as the main villian but thats how today’s real life baddies operates their evil network. Rest of the cast are just ok.
I rate as 4/5 : 2 Stars for the concept n noble thought, 1 for Salman and 1 for Tabu (she really have a meaty role in Jai Ho).
Few of my friends are Srk fans, they also enjoyed Jai Ho n said ‘It is different from last few movies of Salman n did a good job’.
Will watch for atleast 2 more times. :)
