Rangoon Day 2 Box Office Collection Update

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon performed poorly at the box office on Friday, collecting Rs 6.07 crore as per official figures from the producers of the film. Even though the ‘actuals’ are a lot lower (in 5 crore range), the collections are disastrous for a film that has landing costs of more than 60 crore.

Friday was a holiday for Maha Shivaratri, which usually tends to give a boost of around 25% to film business. So the ‘real value’ is actually a lot lower and this means the film will struggle to show big growth on Saturday – as the reports are extremely mixed.

Given the level of business on Friday, Rangoon has to show growth of 30% or more to have any chance at the box office.

The poor opening of Rangoon once again raises the point of the big disconnect that exists between some of our actors / filmmakers and the audience in general. Films are being made to please the critics or the select few intellectuals and not the massive audience all across the country. Inspite of the film boasting of three talented stars, an acclaimed director – who share multiple national awards between them – the audience simply weren’t interested.

At a few theatres, the 1st Friday business of Rangoon was lower than the 2nd Friday collections of a film like ‘XXX: Return Of the Xander’. Several shows were cancelled and many were running at less than 5% occupancy.

The Hindi Film Industry is a business. The economics is failing the film even before its release. You can’t make films like Rangoon with actors who expect a big paycheque, but cannot bring the audience to theatres on the first day. Even the likes of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who gets less than 20% of the acting fee as compared to some of our so called stars, adds more value to a commercial film.

On Saturday (Day 2), the occupancy in the morning is lower than Friday and unless there is a huge turnaround from here, Rangoon will be the biggest disaster of the year. A film that could, officially, fall well under the 30 crore mark – which also means it’ll struggle to recover even the acting fee of the ‘stars’ or the money that was spent on marketing it.

  • This is why we call Srk and Salman the real crowd Pullers.. No mater who is the director , actress, Or any thing.. …Excellent opening is Sure for their films…….Respect!

  • Its really surprising that Shahid kapoor Even after being in the industry for around One and ahalf decade is yet to get a tag of star leave apart a superstar tag he was never in top 5 actors and young actors like ranbir, ranveer andvarun dhawan are much ahead of him and soonother youngsters will also overtake him. After disaster Rangoon he is unlikely to be considered as a reason for success of padmavati (if its successful)

  • Still shahid fans compare him with Ranbir Kapoor who is biggest young star , some even dare to compare him with hritik roshan and start of his career with aamir khan’s career.Aamir had 10 success including 8 hits among which 4 were blockbusters (1 atbb), hritik at start had 9 success among which 7 were hits including 4 blockbusters. Both were among top5 actors at start of their career (Note: Aamir Started during single screen era)

  • Now lets compare shahid with Aamir’s nephew Imran Khan who is not a successful actor and whose career is over.

No. of years active Shahid 14 yrs Imran 7 yrs

No. of hits Shahid 2/25, Imran 4/12

Highest grosser of both actors is 58 cr

So its clear Imran Khan is more successful than Shahid Kapoor Period!

  • Really sad to hear.I am very much sad for a director like Vishal Bhardwaj. For me SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI AND VISHAL BHARDWAJ ARE THE BEST DIRECTORS OF BOLLYWOOD.(WITH NO OFFENSE TO OTHER DIRECTORS OF BOLLYWOOD)

  • BV2
That’s why Hollywood start giving compilation to Bollywood even mantle peoples not allowed 80cr to flop actor, flop actress and flop director for fake 4 star rating
I think production houses have corrupt employees they only want some share of money

  • The so called film critics and some cinema lovers think this kind of movies are reall movies.. But in reality people only watch movie for entertainment and for stars.. Stars ka achar dalo producer to kangaal naa.

  • And I don’t know what to say about shahid.. Really love him talented actor.. But awfull choice of movies.. No daubt haider was brilliant but it was avg on box office so he should mixing up his movies.. He shows his real talent but now he should do commercial movies..

  • Watched #Rangoon
Expectations r always high while watching a Vishal Bhardwaj film . He has something special
#Rangoon s not his best , but not his worst also.
Majority of films dissapointes n irritates regular moviegoers.
But #Rangoon s not a dissapointment for sure.
Narration n specially editing s pretty slow n dey can easily chopoff some songs n scenes .
But I like d plot and performances
Although Kangna s bit dissapointing , But Shahid Kapoor s stand out. Saif Ali Khan n rest of d cast s also decent. If u compare some1 s talent and hardwork with BO nos then dis s not fair.
Shahid again proved dat he can pull a different n difficult role with ease , n slowly but steadily he will became a bankable star also. Outstanding performance.
Cinematography s just wow in dis war drama.
Locals , sets, frames everything captured beautifully.
    Vishal Bhardwaj s work s decent , dialogues r ok , music s bad , VFX s decent production values r good .
    Overall a decent film
    3stars
And don’t listen 2 others just go n watch because it s not a bad 1 for sure and those who love watching different n meaningful cinema won’t get dissapoint dat much.
    #Cheers

  • Saif and Shahid are stars but not the Salman Khan type. They need good content. Shahid has got time and good films in the future. While Saif needs a Hit asap and hope Chef is successful. Saif is a good actor and has good screen persona as we’ve seen in films like Race. If the right film and content, Saif will shine as he’s a good actor. Kangana is good actress but not a star, she can’t make a film Hit just by her presence. Deepika and anushka are much bigger.

  • That Shows how good business jolly llb2 did in dull period Feb month…jolly 2 ..120+Superhit ..On non holiday.

  • @Navneet don’t be that much blind haters also. 1st check then comment. Haider collection was 58 then what about udta punjab and r..rajkumar.

    Udta punjab- 60 cr
    r..rajkumar- 65 cr.

Yeh, it is less than compare to others actors top grosser but at least learn to speak truth.

  • This isn’t any surprise. Currently we are the dullest phase of the year for film business. Board Exams are nearing and schools have final exams on. To add on, it’s a Vishal Bhardwaj movie. Feeling sad for Shahid, when will he ever get success in the industry. Even Ayushman Khurana might race past him soon.

  • Hi indicine…
Why are you over estimiating movies..e.g lbo for rang0on was 6.3 & actual is 5 & lbo for jolly was 14 and actual was 12 & lbo 4 ok janu & raees & kabil was also much m0re than actual…
I’m not bashing you..i love your site..i am just giving an advice…
    That is ‘calm down dude’…
Reduce the LBO of phillauri , commando 2,, badrinath etc…
    Otherwise you will be bashed.,
    Øk….

  • 5 crores opening on national holiday ..vishal boardwaaj as director ..also shahid and Saif. ..still lifetime will be maximum 20 or 25 crores. …Queen of bollywood really!!!.. now it is confirmed tat tanu weds manu was just a tukka ….now I do hope tat she do even even more disastrous movies like these as this is her real aukaat…

  • Kangana was never a crowd puller and never will be. She just got lucky with a few films.
It’s a combination of lot other factors that made his successful films the successes they are.

  • Sad that Saif Ali Khan is getting failures. He’s an excellent actor. Look at his work in Kal Ho Naa Ho. If his acting was not better than SRK then it was no less too. He had the role of a solo lead for the first time and he won a national award. I mean wow!

  • I get your point Indicine but don’t you think that audiance has to grow up ? In western countries, expensive art movies can be success because audiance is more educated. I think we should blame the system here and not directors trying to educate people…
