Ranbir Kapoor Performance Reviews: Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewaani

Verdict from leading critics in India for Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Indicine: Ranbir Kapoor is always good. Always. He hardly ever misses a beat, and this role must have been a cakewalk for him compared to his last few roles. He stays well within his comfort zone as Ayan Mukherji knows his friend’s strengths very well. Ranbir accentuates the bohemian Bunny very comfortably. He lights up the screen when he’s on-screen with his sheer charm. Read full review

Meena Iyer (TOI): Ranbir is delectable and a true-blue superstar. This pedigreed actor dances like a dream, looks terrific and emotes effortlessly. Watch out for the scenes with his father Farooque Shaikh.

Taran Adarsh: Ranbir is the show-stopper, the film’s major muscle, the jewel in the crown, no two opinions on that. He is pitch-perfect, managing to be maddening, exasperating, childish and endearing in a flash. He captivates you with his gaze, his tone of voice, his chuckle and those itsy-bitsy gestures that make Bunny so so so lovable.

Tushar Joshi (DNA India): Over the last few films, Ranbir has managed to reach a platform where anything he does seems so easy and natural. With his best friend as the director, there is never a dull moment with RK on screen. There is a lot more of him in Bunny than any of his characters.

Ranbir Kapoor

Ananya Bhattacharya (Zee News): Ranbir Kapoor clinches it – this time too! While his last at the BO saw him as the deaf and mute ‘Barfi!’, Kapoor makes up for the minutes spent not talking in this one – he is funny, focused, flirtatious and miles away from what he had been in Mukherji’s last film – ‘Wake Up Sid’.

Shubhra Gupta (Indian Express): It is Ranbir, and a few of his climactic moments with Deepika (they begin with distressingly little going on between them), as well as a few emotive scenes with Farooq Shaikh, who plays his father, that stay with you. The Kapoor lad gets a nice matter-of-factness to loverboy self, and allows himself to be overcome when the time is right.

Martin D’Souza (Glamsham): Ranbir is his exuberant self, portraying the joys of youth with gay abandon. For the two to pull off a super performance tells a lot of their maturity, both as actors and as ordinary human beings. After all, it is not easy to get cozy on screen when your personal break-up has been national news.

Sukhanya Verma (Rediff): Ranbir Kapoor is perfectly cast as the hippie-at-heart Bunny.  Whether he’s sipping Roohafza with his dad (Farookh Shaikh, two scenes is all it takes to convey brilliance), telling Deepika Padukone how special she is, fondly referring to his gal pal Kalki as ‘Mere Cheetah’ or shaking a leg with a tantalising Madhuri Dixit, the extent of romanticism, charisma and verve he conveys; lends YJHD all the personality it needs.

Aparanjeetha Sambandan (Sify): Ranbir’s portrayal of Bunny is spot on. He brings life and energy to the character in a way that there’s always a constant state of motion even in Bunny’s most tranquil moments, thereby fitting in seamlessly into the garb of a traveler raring to go.

Shubha Shetty-Saha (Mid-day): Ranbir Kapoor is brilliant. This is a true star, who moves you to tears with a simple scene that he shares with his dad (played sensitively by Farooq Shaikh) and he also challenges to take your eyes off him when he is shaking legs with the gorgeous Madhuri Dixit.

Mayank Shekhar: The hero is Ranbir Kapoor. The audience in my theatre at 10.30 am on the first day is about 70 per cent female, which is a significantly higher gender ratio you’re ever likely to land up with at any Indian party you go to. I sense the female power over films at work. If you’re coming from the ‘90s, you could ask Shah Rukh Khan a thing or two about that. If you’re currently headed towards Hollywood, you have to only sit in a Ryan Gosling movie to experience the effect. It has nothing to do with movies, much less, movie reviews for god’s sake. The audience has walked into the theatre already decided that they will swoon over the hero’s swagger, respond to his every move and line.

Komal Nahta: Ranbir Kapoor is a charmer par excellence. He looks fantastic, acts marvellously and dances splendidly to reach straight into the hearts of the audience. This is yet another award-winning performance from the new superstar. His innocent face and his mature acting are a deadly combination.

With almost every critic praising his performance, Ranbir Kapoor yet again get a 10 on 10 for his performance in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

  • This movie will be the turning point for Ranbir. Like DDLJwas the turning point for SRK.

This movie looks like modern version of DDLJ. I mean the way naina gets into the train, the way bunny gives his hand to naina to help her gettin into the train reminds me of DDLJ. I haven’t watched the movie. But I just feel so. If someone who has watched the movie reads my comment tell me if I am true. :-)

  • YES!!!!! He is a perfect ACTOR. And after earth shattering opening this movie took he has turned into a super star too.

  • i had seen the promos, and to be honest, there was nothing exceptional in his role, but still i don’t know why this media and these critics are praising him so much as if this role deserves oscar, i think media and all industry people wants to push ranbir as much as they can to superstar status, indicine never posted about any other actor’s performance reviews before, why such injustice ?? what about irrfan khan in paan singh tomar ?? hrithik roshan in agneepath ?? aamir khan in talaash ?? paresh rawal in OMG ?? those roles were far complex and difficult, bunny is such a simple role of youthful flirt and fun loving guy, who can’t play this role ?? seriously this is biased , i think any credible actor can play this role, whats new in it ?? still so much of recognition for this simple role ?? indicine team, sorry but this is getting hard to digest, i think people are over promoting and over rating ranbir honestly. even salman who is the biggest star now, his performance as chulbul pandey was not posted.

  • I agree with @The Truth . His role was pretty easy. In some scenes in the trailer his dialogue delivery was terrible.

  • @THE TRUTH, it isn’t not about who can’t play these roles, it’s about playing these roles perfectly. it’s really hard to play common roles like this. only few people has nailed these roles perfectly like aamir in DCH, saif in love aaj kal, and hrithik in ZNMD. i don’t think even irfan or Nawazuddin would be able to play these kind of roles perfectly. so don’t be a prick and appreciated good acting, because good acting is something we hardly see in bollywood biggies.

  • Ranbir movie Yeh jawaani hai deewani has collected 20 crore. Now all jealous salman fan shud accept the fact and shud appreciate ranbir star power. Bcuz ranbir films didnt had masala element, vulgar item songs, holiday factor, good beinghuman wala tweet, still it managed to net 20 crores. Its very easy to be jealous, cite many weird excuses and try to underestimate but it’s very difficult to accept and appreciate rising superstar.
@Salman fans. Plz open ur eyes and see the world properly. Again don’t be jealous. We SRK fan never take away anything or try to cite wierd excuses when Salman became superstar with Dabangg. You peoples have to the same, that’s it.

  • Dabangg 2 advantages over Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
    1. Sequel of ATBB
    2. Chritmas festival atrraction
    3. 3700 screens means 650 screens more than YJHD
    4. Less run time means more shows
    5. Vulgar item songs to attract small town audience
    6. Salman khan masala movie releasing after his 4 good WOM masala films

Now most important point is : Boxofficeindia quoted Salman is no.1 to no. 10. Then how it’s possible future superstar ranbir who position might be in no. 16 or no. 17, able to beat (no.1 to no.10 star) salman’s opening record? that too with 650 less screens!!!!!
Salman well wishers says he is no.1 in india. I disagree bcuz any superstar with proper holiday weekend can create record. Examples :
Ra one beat bodyguard record on second day. I repeat ON SECOND DAY!!!! that too with huge negtivity
Agneepath beaten bodyguard 1st day record
    now YJHD beaten dabangg 2

Why is salman’s previous films were blockbuster in india?
Due to holiday factor and multiple open weeks
    Dabangg : Eid release
Ready : post IPL releae + multiple open weeks
    Bodyguard : eid release
Ek tha Tiger : National holiday + Eid release + 6 or 7 open weeks ( joker came in btw and u know the fate)
Dabangg 2 : Christmas release + multiple holiday + numerious open weeks
Now salman well wishers can easily say salman is no.1 to no.30

  • @ Soroop: In every article, why you bring Salman. Yes the prince charming has arrived and he is going to rule the 21st century.

Each generation has there share of superstars. Only in 21st century, there were no new Superstars, so the Khans, Kumars & Devgan.

SRK was past, Salman is still present, but yes Ranbir is future.

  • Great achievement for Rabhir. But to those people complaining that the movie is released in 600 odd screens less than Dabangg 2, it’s because the people involved knows what’s best for the movie. There is no use in releasing the movie in extra screens if that won’t help the film.

  • @Nilesh. Why, u can bring sharukh in every article but i cannot bring salman?. Anyways I am comparing Yeh jawani hai deewani and dabangg 2. And if u look at opening and screen count size Ranbir is ahead of ur beloved khan. I know u won’t like it but what to do , u have to accept it dude. Ranbir showed salman’s real Aukad, Now sharukh will put him where he belongs before 2010. King khan needs 1 blockbuster to be no.1 not like others who need 5 blockbusters and still in danger.

  • Vulgar songs so wat is Balam pichkari a sufi song? Aur gf chod chad ke an Anthem?? Salman is super megastar & Aamir 2 RK is nothing

  • WHY U GUYS ARE COMPARING HIM WITH SALMAN ALL SRK FANS,WHY U ALL YOURSELF THINKING THAT SRK DAYS ARE OVER? TO COMPARE WITH SALMAN IS USELESS AND THE MEDIA IS CREATING HYPE NOTHING ELSE.

  • salman and ranbir cant be compared as salman is has allready achieved megastar status by series of mega bockbusters and he is already in safe zone whereas Rk has proven himself by two conseqative superhits and good performance what salman khan has is his presence that makes film blockbuster whereas RK’s performance thad deserves such response which result into b.o result. So it is baseless to compare him with salman or ajay as far as srk’s comparisone is concerned , one thing is obious now srk has gone out of leage neither he has power like salman make a film blockbuster nor he has fanfollowing as of salman bhai.
He -srk- now is in different status where he can only be compared with sunil shetti, govinda, shahid kapoor, tushar kapoor, and anil kapoor,
And i think he has no chance to come out of such a disasturous position.

So what ranbir has shown is a outcome of his hardwork ..

  • @ Soroop: Your king will never get. For Salman giving blockbuster is just a numbers and I am happy for Ranbir, he has also given.

By the way Vidya Balan is also delivering blockbusters, but your King has to depend on various queens still the blockbuster i elusive.

This Eid, the King Kumar will show your king his aukat.

  • IF U WATCH THE FILM SO MUCH VULGAR DIALOGUES “FOR KIDS WHY MARRIAGE” MANY MORE SIMILAR KIND OF DIALOGUES PEOPLE ARE BLAMING SALMAN KHAN FOR ITEM SONGS BUT HE NEVER DONE ON SCREEN KISSING NOR HE USE CHEAP DIALOGUES AS THIS FILM. HALF OF THE FILM IS COPY FROM DDLJ

  • and for some logic read this Ranbir also expressed his desire to work with three Khans – Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir – in a film. “Even if they just stand behind my sofa, with me in front, that film would be runaway hit,” he said.

By now peoples should understand at what height Khans are staying in bollywood. STOP COMPARING HIM WITH KHANS.

  • One thing for sure, if your film is entertaining and engrossing, whatever might be the genre, public will make them blockbuster.

Ashiqui 2 & YJHD, proved that even ROMANTIC pictures can be blocbusters.

  • Akshay kumar a complete actor bcoz of action scene which he do himself.
    But ranbir can’t.
Ranbir is next super star no doubt

  • @soroop: could plz define aukad or auqath? u call a day collections or 1 movie collections as aukad ? if yes u can imagine srk current aukad which is torn apart by Salman n Ranbir is rubbing salt on it. Now this is called as real aukad!!!!! n keep dreaming about CE. it will be a superhit maximum not much more that. 1 blockbuster is not equal to 5 blockbusters. It is like trekking a tiny hill is not same as conquering Mount Everest.

  • @hrithik. Salman given 4 blockbusters before he release dabangg 2 and now that record has been broken. what is the use giving 4 or 5 such blockbster?. In short his movie is earning but his star value is constant. If SRK give 1 blockbuster then he cant be touched by any, that’s his star power.

  • @ Soroop- Ranbir is definitely a great actor and a superstar too.. but as far stardom is concerned, he has miles to go to match that of Salman. Moreover, YJHD is a nice movie with good script and direction and with IPL is off now.. it’s doing so good…And Salman’s movie with much lesser quality do awesome at BO. Imagine, had it been Salman in YJHD instead of Ranbir..the collections wud have been 1.5 times.

  • @Abhinav. For 1st 3 days quality does not matter only star power does. IF salman is in YJHD then it would have collected 1.5 more, this shows how foolish u r. Dabangg 2 was salman’s best and biggest release ever and it’s weekend collection has had been crossed by ranbir movie by 4 crore with less than 650 screens. Salman has more blockbusters but ranbhir have more star power now. Get ready to accept it dude or ask salman to release his mental with besharam and see the result.

  • @ Soroop,.. hahaha…digest the truth…I bet on this..the day Salman would come up with a good movie.. the collections would surpaas that of 3 idiots.. Ranbir is a kid.. let him grow..nd u too grow up!!

  • @soroop : Thats the problem with srk fans. You proved srkians not only biased or hypocrites with double standards but also fools!!!! which media or channel or magazine says an actor’s (whoever it may be) stardom goes down as he belts back to back blockbusters? i guess srk or his fans have created this new media source whose thoughts are not only foolish but childish too.
