Ram Gopal Varma talks about the Hollywood threat

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who is known to direct disaster after disasters and yet find investors to back his films, has spoken about the threat of Hollywood films on the Hindi film industry.

The director has said Hollywood films are already performing better and their filmmakers are far more talented than the directors that we have in our industry.

“It is already happening. They are performing much better than all of our films so I don’t think it is about the future. They are far more talented filmmakers and make better films than us”

“Eventually the audience want to cater to the best and they feel Hollywood films are better, which is the truth. It will be even tougher for Hindi films in the future because Hollywood tasted blood with the kind of collections ‘The Jungle Book’ got.. some $35 million in India. It’s a huge thing for a Hollywood film in India.” he said in a group interview.

Varma’s most recent film ‘Veerappan’ released in theatres last weekend. The film has collected about 4.5 crore in 3 days, making it yet another failure for the director.

  • Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who is known to direct disaster after disasters and yet find investors to back his films

    lol Epic lines from indicine

  • LOL, in his entire carrer he has directed only 4 good hindi films:Rangeela, Satya, Company and sarkar
And after his AAG industry went rofl
Sir mr RGV dont worry,,, our industry will never eever falter,,,u were once the pioneer of epic mumbai noire but now u r in the same level as that of ur best friend krk-#2RsPpl

  • He’s not doing good for a while now, but I think he’ll bounce back. He’s better than the crap dished out by the coffee show guy

  • ‘The Jungle Book’ was a one of a kind phenomenon…I really doubt any other Hollywood movie is going to collect that much from India..but the point to be noted here is more and more people are now getting attracted towards Hollywood movies and that is a fact we cannot ignore. Premium multiplex chains are allotting good no. of shows for big Hollywood movies and obviously the superhero genre movies and action movies from Hollywood are almost certain to take a good opening and some of them even sustaining. People want to spend their hard earned money on quality movies and one thing they can always rely on Hollywood movies is the fact that even if the storyline of the movie is weak, technical brilliance is guaranteed which in turn will give them a great cinematic experience that won’t get from torrents or TV.

  • Hindi Cinema is rapidly making same films every time that’s why Indians have started loving & going to Hollywood cinema, they come up with new ideas, their VFX is perfect and due to some old films like The Jungle Book that made Hollywood cinema more respectable than our Hindi Cinema

This year 2 sports films i.e Sultan, Dangal which repeated by Hindi Cinema film makers since 2-3 years

so many biopics i.e Dangal, Sarbjit, Nirja etc repeating this year too

all other repeated masala entertaining films which is a trend since the birth of Hindi Cinema

this year only three to four films are different which will make Bollywood a valuable industry & watchable
    1, Airlift
    2, MOHENJO DARO
    3, Rustom
    4, Shivaay (May be)

  • Hindi film industry is investing money on not only crap films like FAN, DILWALE, HNY, CE, Ra.one but also small budget films. They are investing heroic films like all superstars films make on heroic base films. Instead of making films on heroic subjects they should discover story oriented films.
Our film industry have power to reach Hollywood level.

  • As I had pointed out, regional cinema works on good story, content and great acting, but when it comes to Bollywood, they have to scale it much higher now.

India is a huge industry and yes hollywood is getting inroads, though they still have miles to go.

However, for us to tackle hollywood, we need directors and technicians who have power to dream, like Rajamouli or S. Shankar to make larger than life movies. Then we have Hirani, who make brilliant film told in a subtle humourous way.

There has to be a reason for people to go to theatres. You cannot expect a person to visit a theatre twice in a month with Rs 300 to 400 ticket price for a movie which can be experienced on TV equally.

We get pirated CDs in 50 rupees on streets, so who wants to spend 300 to 400 per ticket?

The government is equally responsible. They should cut down the 50-60% tax they are charging. It should be kept under 20%. This will help down the ticket prices drastically, and people will be more than willing to go out and watch movie on the big screen. The government is here to help art grow and not make profit out of it.

People go to movies to get entertained, and if that is provided by hollywood, then be it. People don’t care two hoots about saving bollywood and blah blah……so, the industry itself shoudl wake up and smell the coffee, cuz 5-6 years down the line there will be no Salman, Aamir or Srk……..so, it is high time the industry be brave and evolve now……we have done that before….but we have to do it again……..

By the way saw Angry Birds, and have to tell you, it is a laugh riot…….i don’t blame hollywood !!!!

  • @Indicine, instead of writing disasters after disasters, you should have written ….. Ram Gopal Varma, best known for movies such as Rangeela, Satya, Company, Bhoot, Sarkaar & more, who have not seen box office success recently………… should have been more apt……… not expected this kind of disrespect kind of content from Indicine………… always know that is always a decent way also to write negatively, if you must……… grow up!

  • @Indice, yes go ahead & write facts but in a decent manner. Yes, he trolls people on Twitter, accepted, but why do you need to do the same? Write the facts but decently, by not going going into his standards, he won’t, but only you will be admired & grow! Thanks!

    • @Md Waliur Rahman, facts are facts. No point covering them up. We did mention that Rakta Charitra was a well-made film, but some of his other films have been borderline C-grade.

  • @ Indicine : Lol. Agreed with you.

He has a knack of passing controversial and degrading comments about different stars. He has done it many times. And mostly does it when a movie of his is releasing to gain attention.

He even tweeted once that he was happy that India lost to Australia in a World cup semi final. And his logic was that people were engrossed in cricket and being counter productive. So he thought that watching his movies is a very productive work.

  • he knows his films are not going beyond 7 or 8 crore so he should make movies in budget of 3 crore

  • There is differences between you guys and Ram Gopal Verma. A robust, reputable movie site don’t use sentiments talk more of giving excuses like …because he did or said that on Twitter?? So what? He is representing only himself and his thoughts while you represent trust, credibility, just ,transparency and maturity of a movie industry. There’s a huge gulf between you guys and RGV. Please that’s very harsh and insignificant,no matter what he deserves respect. How many people can sit down ,think do a movie, invest so much …movie does not work (due to some reasons as you pointed out for R.chakr earlier) but still comes back again to invest and do another movie… for who? It’s for Us ,you , the audience etc….just to entertain us .

  • RGV finds investors because his movies recover the spent amount always.

And of course he is right. American film makers far better than Indian film makers

The recent Housefull3 collections itself show how we celebrate mediocrity. Giving 30 crores to Will Smith or Leonardo is so worth it. Here we give it Akshay Kumar
