Ram Gopal Varma Films: Box Office Verdicts

Ram Gopal Varma is all set to continue his losing streak at the box office, as his latest film ‘Veerappan’ has received a poor response in its opening weekend. The director who began his career with a cult classic like ‘Shiva’, hasn’t had a box office success since ‘Sarkar Raj’ in 2008.

Between all this flop films, RGV has one film that deserved to be a box office hit, but ended up as a under-performer, mainly due to the unwillingness of the audience to give the director’s film a chance. That film was ‘Rakta Charitra’ a fantastic gangster film with outstanding performances and direction.

His next film is based on the life and times of yet another don. This time around it’ll be a dreaded gangster from the South city of Mangalore, Muthappa Rai. The film titled ‘Rai’ will mark the comeback of Vivek Oberoi under RGV’s director. The director duo have together delivered films like ‘Company’ and ‘Rakta Charitra’.

  • This director started well and delivered some very good movies like Satya, Rangeela, Company, Kaun (a superb thriller even if it was a flop), Bhoot, Sarkar. But he then started delivering duds after duds.

Repeating a portion of an old comment of mine below in which I had discussed some other good directors who also later lost their touch.

    Some other examples are:

    1. The great Subhash Ghai who initially directed evergreen and memorable movies like Karz, Karma, Meri Jung, Hero, Vidhaata, Saudagar, Ram Lakhan and Khalnayak.

And then at the end delivered poor/average movies like Yaadein, Yuvraaj, Kisna and with Kaanchi touching his lowest ebb.

    2. The greatest Ramesh Sippy who directed all time epic and classic (and whatever other words of praises one can possibly imagine for) movies like Sholay and Shakti. Also the director of some very fine movies like Shaan, Seeta aur Geeta and Saagar.

At the end of career delivered poor movies like Akayla (Big B), Bhrashtachar and Zamana Deewana (SRK).

    3. Kundan Shah (though not a director known for delivering big hits) is best known for his cult comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro considered to be an all time classic. Also delivered an excellent movie Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na (SRK) and another very fine movie Kya Kehna (Saif, Pretty).

He also at the end delivered below average movies like Hum to Muhabbat Karega, Dil Hai Tumhara and touching his lowest with a movie like P se PM tak.

  • this will happen if you insult every one…..how dare you to insult acting legend mammootty sir…if your movie is good still you won’t get any box office success beacouse of your attitude…

  • Saw his many films… he is very talented and UNIQUE director in Indian film industry but impatient…. if he spend some time on ‘quality’ every film will be a classic like ‘Satya & Sarkar’ :)

  • @indicine: are u sure abt rangeela verdict. Boi and some other sites hv given blockbuster verdict. I was very young then but remember the film getting excellent response back in 1995.

    • @Amit, 100% sure. Rangeela was not a major success at the box office. It only did well at select few centres. There is a lot of difference between perception / critical acclaim and how the film actually performed when it released. A lot of people would say ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ is a blockbuster, but in reality the film was a theatrical failure when it released.

  • I loved The attacks of 26/11.It deserved audiences. It was gruesome and shocking led by wonderful performance by Nana Patekar.

  • Rangeela. Abv avg…!!! Haha. I earlier used 2 blv that indicine used 2 copy boi for bo verdicts of old films but later realised that even boi have termed films like rangeela as hits. . !! Anyways past is past. Indicine verdicts for films post 2008 are accurate and trustworthy

  • Here everything u indicine guys said is true!! And u guys are gone crazy over the statement of varma that salman is bigger star than srk,, u guys don’t agree with him but varma too said the truth!! Here is the game of saving extinct srk!!

  • @Indicine, I am damn sure Rangeela was a Super Hit, not above average.
And also I believe Company was a Hit.
So get your BO Verdicts revised.

  • Rangeela is a blockbuster acc to boi new update. Before rangeela ,i hate aamir as a Salman fan but rangeela ,laagan and taare zameen par changed everything. Now i like aaa also of ameer .full marks to rgv.

  • so true about rakht charitra. It was a brilliant gangster film with superb acting from everyone and great direction from rgv

  • Rangeela has been universally acknowledged as a semi hit Sarkar Raj was above average at best. And I am sure Phoonk did well (above average to hit).

  • that’s only Guts of Aamir that he can work with director like RGV and SRK and Salman are playing Safe always

  • RGV has made some brilliant movies such as Rangeela, Satya, Sarkar, Company and Attacks of 26/11 . Out of these I have seen Sarkar, Company and 26/11 . But he is known for making Nishabd, Agyaat, Phoonk, Phoonk 2, Department and RGV KI Aag . He has completely ruined his career by making craps after craps .

  • Company 40 cr but budget? 10 crs?? Hit
Rangeela adjusted gross 167 crs Footfall 1.90 and verdict Blockbuster…

  • Attacks of 26/11 and Rakht Charitra were very good… I feel that RC and Gangs of Wasseypur were the two best gangsters saga in recent times.
Anyway, what is Veerappan’s budget Indicine ? Because I thought that 5,95 cr wasn’t disastrous if the budget is low… Could you please give us more information about it ? :)

  • @Amir Fan, u idiot!!!
Amir worked with RGV after he gave 1 hit, not after continous flops!!!
That doesn’t take guts, that is what playing safe actually means…

  • @indicine wow what a joke? You are damn jealous of aamir’s success as he is ruling the industry like no one ever did, but always partial towards other khans. If rangeela is not blockbuster and only above average then same logic wise, my challenge, change the verdicts of partner, dabangg 2, ready, ra.one, don 2, my name is khan, dilwale, and many other overrated 2 khans’ movies. Because according to many initial reports and based on how they performed, their verdicts were exaggerated. Partner, ready, dabangg 2 were super hits not blockbusters. Ra.one, dilwale, my name is khan were above average not hits. And TZP was blockbuster even according to your own Top 5 ranking article in 2008. I can even send you the link. But now you have changed the verdict of TZP to super hit.

    Check this out.

Now if you have guts then accept your deeds.

  • @iamBollywood Fan and what about hiding behind shelter like big banners YRF/Dharma/Rajashree? Srk and salman have alays played safe because they didnt have guts to take risks like Megastar Emperor Aamir Khan. Tell srk to do movie like talaaah if he has guts, tell bhabhijaan to do risky movies like talaash, dhobi ghaat, peepli live, etc if he has guts. But no, he wont do it, because his gawaar auto waala fans wont even give a damn if he would stop doing masala entertainers. Thats his level. Aamir has always taken risks unluke insecure yrf/rajashree/masala dependent stars.

Company is a 2002 Indian crime-thriller film directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film starred Mohanlal, Ajay Devgan, Manisha Koirala, Vivek Oberoi, and Antara Mali in pivotal roles. It is a fictional exposé of the Mumbai underworld, loosely based on the Indian mafia organization D-Company, known to be run by Dawood Ibrahim. It is the second film in the Indian Gangster trilogy, and a sequel to the blockbuster Satya. Upon release, the film received positive reviews from critics as well as audience, having won seven Filmfare Awards; three IIFA Awards, and went on to become one of the highest grossing Bollywood film(s) of 2002.

An example of Parallel cinema, Company received critical acclaim at the Austin Film Festival, New York Asian Film Festival, and the Fribourg International Film Festival.[1][2] British director Danny Boyle cited the trilogy as influences on his Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), for their “slick, often mesmerizing portrayals of the Mumbai underworld”, their display of “brutality and urban violence”, and their gritty realism.[3][4][5]…..

  • I’m so glad that Ram Gopal Varma is back with a bang with his latest film, Ram Gopal Varma Films. The film is a must-watch and I’m sure it will do well at the box office.
