Raat Gayi Baat Gayi Movie Review

Assumed to be heavily inspired from Hollywood super-hit ‘The Hangover’, it came as a pleasant surprise when Raat Gayi Baat Gayi turned out to be anything but a ‘Hangover’ remake.

The movie is basically about men, women, their relationships and urban marriages. Rahul (Rajat Kapoor) a married man encounters a sexy young woman, Sophie (Neha Dhupia), at a party. The situation is just about perfect for a one night fling and some mild flirting later, the man and woman are locked up inside a room….

Rahul wakes up the next morning, unable to recollect the events that transpired in the room. His wife Mitali (Iravati Harshe) is strangely upset. With help from his friend (Vinay Pathak), who is thrown out by his wife for chatting with girls and watching porn, Rahul sets out to find out, if he indeed did go all the way the previous night.

Raat Gayi Baat Gayi Review

The movie was an unsatisfying experience primarily because of four reasons. One, the first half is an uneventful drag with the story going nowhere. Two, the ‘truth’ behind the night, when revealed lacked impact. Three, the married man in Neha’s life and ‘why Rahul’s wife is upset’ was quite easy to predict. And four, the movie completely lacked shock-value, so important for a movie like Raat Gayi Baat Gayi.

But it sure does leave a smile on your face as you walk out, due to a few well written and executed sequences. The scene in Neha Dhupia’s apartment, although predictable, was hilarious. So too was the scene when Vinay Pathak apologizes to his wife by singing a song.

Also at the cafe, when Pathak’s wife holds on to the waiter and passes on her number, asking Pathak “Do you now know how it feels to be hurt?” was great to watch. All that the director was probably trying to convey through the scene was – Women, irrespective of their status or looks, never lack attention. Its oh-so easy to get just about anyone they want, yet they rarely slip. For men, it doesn’t take much more than half a hint, does it?

The performances are good. Rajat Kapoor is at his effortless best. Vinay Pathak overacts at times, but is exceptionally good in few scenes. Neha Dhupia looks hot, acts well too. The rest – Anu Menon, Irawati Mayadev, Navniit Nisshan, Aamir Bashir, Dalip Tahil – are all good. Ranvir Shorey, Sudhir Mishra and Makrand Deshpande have special appearances.

Overall, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is not for everyone. It has its moments, but not enough to warrant a big screen watch. You’d be better off waiting for the DVD.

    1) Akshay Kumar will be a part of the remake, directed by Sajid Khan, to be produced by Feroze Nadiadwala.

    2) There were also rumours that Saif Ali Khan’s Production house Illuminati Productions were approached by Warner Bros themselves.

    3) To be directed by Anees Bazmee starring Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Ritesh Deshmukh and Paresh Rawal.

    4) Sanjay Dutt it is said, is also interested in remaking the film.
