Raabta does the impossible, falls below Rangoon

Sushant Singh Rajput’s ‘Raabta’ has faced the worst possible rejection of the year, as the film that looked more commercial and colourful as compared to the darker ‘Rangoon’ will end up with lesser lifetime collections.

The collections of ‘Raabta’ makes even the under-performing box office performance of a film like ‘Half Girlfriend’, look much better than it did a couple of weeks ago.

‘Raabta’ is out of most theatres this week, even though there is no major competition. Even at big cities, the screen-count has come down by 90%, with the film running at select high-capacity theatres that are screening 2-3 shows of the film.

The writing was on the wall the moment the trailer was out, but a performance worse than ‘Rangoon’ was unexpected. In fact, the day-wise collections are comparable to a lower-budget rejected film like ‘Ok Jaanu’.

‘Raabta’ is a major setback for Sushant Singh Rajput after the success of ‘MS Dhoni The Untold Story’. Ditto for Kriti Sanon, who doesn’t have much to show after a promising debut in ‘Heropanti’. It’s also the worst possible directorial-debut for a successful producer like Dinesh Vijan, as the collections are lower than his niche film ‘Go Goa Gone’ which released in 2013.
