Aamir Khan’s PK and Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year were two of the most anticipated movies of 2014. While the former took a slow start at the box office on its opening day, Farah Khan’s Diwali release opened to packed houses across the country.
The comparison is interesting because both films had a similar release – PK had higher number of shows at multiplexes and also the average ticket price was about 10-12% higher. Happy New Year on the other hand, had two holidays in its first weekend (Sunday included), Saturday was also a holiday in parts of the country and it had a slightly wider single-screen release.
Interestingly, while Happy New Year went on to collect just 4.5 times its first day business (204.83 divided by 44.97 = 4.55), PK has already collected 4.37 times its first day collections (116.43 divided by 26.63 = 4.37). The Aamir Khan starrer, which is probably carrying the best word-of-mouth for any film released this year, could go on to do more than 10 times its first day business!
In 4 days, Happy New Year had collected 123.87 crore, while PK is trailing with collections of 116.43 crore.

It just shows SUPERSTARDOM can give your huge opening weekend. But its the CONTENT and QUALITY of a production, WOM are the real king on weekdays.
SRK must learn to work with QUALITY directors instead of garbage like FARAH KHAN. She is just riding him. 204 crores is low for HNY after record breaking start!.
SRK needs to work with ANURAG KASHYUP, KABIR KHAN, SRIRAM RAGHAVAN and TIGMANSHU DHULIA after MANISH SHARMA and RAHUL DHOLAKIA.

Pk has christmas holiday and year end holiday.Christian schools and convents are having christmas vacations. Regions like goa,kerala and tamil nadu will benefit due to christmas vacations. Hny had diwali vacations.

@ khan – completely agree with u……first of all top actors should do a masala film only once in a while and that too there has to be something unique about it………we expect the top actors to give something more than just 200 cr grossers…..unique concepts, unique scripts, they should take risks…..their name is enuf to ensure reach of their films……they must guide the industry to new levels in terms of production, quality etc …….money will follow……even if it doesnt , their stardom would not decrease

Our king movie HNY won in first 2 days but from 3 rd day PK is winning and PK will win everyday now coz there is no chance of single digit collection of PK while our kings movie hny single digit collection came on day 7 only when it collected less than 10 crores
