Overseas Ranking: Top Stars of Bollywood

Aamir Khan has finally edged past Shahrukh Khan in the overseas markets for the first time. Not too long ago, Shahrukh was in a league of his own, but after the super-success of ‘3 Idiots’ Aamir Khan films too have been taking record-openings. Aamir currently has two of the highest grossers in the history of Indian cinema to his credit – Dhoom 3 and 3 Idiots, only two films that have crossed $25 million overseas. The $25 million mark could be considered equivalent to the 200 crore club in the domestic market.

The rest of the list remains the same.

  • The list below would be based on the gross box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. To keep the comparison fair, all figures are in US dollars.
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration. Non-commercial and art films like ‘Dhobi Ghat’ have also not been considered.
  • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
  • We have only included 8 actors in the list because the rest are not bankable stars overseas. The likes of Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, with a couple of solid overseas performers behind them, are emerging as stars to watch out for. Currently, it’s unfair to include them in the list.
Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma - PK

Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma – PK

Rank 1 Aamir Khan: Aamir Khan has finally ended Shahrukh Khan’s 2-decade long overseas dominance. With the release of his upcoming film ‘PK’, Aamir is likely to establish himself as the new king of the overseas markets. While the consistency and craze for Shahrukh will be difficult to match, Aamir too has a loyal fan-following which extends to countries like Japan and China. He currently has the highest grossing overseas film to his credit, Dhoom 3, which released in theatres during Christmas last year.

  • Dhoom 3 – $31 million
  • Talaash – $8.95 million
  • 3 Idiots – $25.9 million
  • Ghajini – $7.75 million
  • Taare Zameen Par – $3.20 million
  • Total – $76.8 million (average $15.36 million per film)

Rank 2 Shahrukh Khan: An actor who has dominated the overseas markets like no other star in the history of Indian Cinema, Shahrukh Khan remains the biggest crowd puller outside India. His lowest grossers are far higher than the highest grossers of most other actors. However, Aamir Khan films have taken business to another level in the overseas markets. Happy New Year had to collect $23.5 million or more for SRK to retain the top spot, the film collected about $15.9 million.

  • Happy New Year – $15.9 million
  • Chennai Express – $18.95 million
  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan – $13.25 million
  • Don 2 – $11.25 million
  • Ra. One – $10.9 million
  • Total – $70.5 million (average $14.05 million per film)

Rank 3 Salman Khan: The biggest star in India is at number three overseas and lags way behind Aamir and Shahrukh. Most of his films belong to the action / masala genre, which could be one of the reasons why his films don’t perform as well in overseas territories. His latest release, Kick, was also his highest grosser ahead of Ek Tha Tiger. Currently, Kick is the 3rd highest overseas grosser of the year after Happy New Year and Bang Bang.

  • Kick – $11.3 million
  • Jai Ho – $6.1 million
  • Dabangg 2 – $8.48 million
  • Ek Tha Tiger – $10.4 million
  • Bodyguard – $8.3 million
  • Total – $44.58 million (average $8.92 million per film)

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan: The super-success of Bang Bang in the overseas markets has closed the gap between Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan. It will be interesting to see if Hrithik can go past Salman after the release of Mohenjo Daro in 2016. The Top 4 stars are the biggest crowd-pullers overseas, the gap between them and the rest is pretty big.

  • Bang Bang – $13.5 million
  • Krrish 3 – $8.78 million
  • Agneepath – $6.1 million
  • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara – $7.21 million
  • Guzaarish – $3.22 million
  • Total – $38.81 million (average $7.76 million per film)

Rank 5 Ranbir Kapoor: Besharam under-performed big time, but Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a massive success at the box office. Barfi and Rockstar too did well.

  • Besharam – $2.96 million
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – $10.45 million
  • Barfi! – $5.86 million
  • Rockstar – $3.36 million
  • Anjaana Anjaani – $3.2 million
  • Total – $25.83 million (average $5.17 million per film)

Rank 6 Saif Ali Khan: Saif’s latest release Happy Ending has fared poorly in the overseas markets. The film has collected $1 million in its opening weekend, but the success of Race 2 and Cocktail ensures that Saif continues to hold on to the 6th spot. Happy Ending should collect around $1.5 – 1.75 million by the end of its run as it has dropped all over on Monday.

  • Happy Ending – $1.75 million (expected)
  • Humshakals - $2.65 million
  • Bullet Raja- $1 million
  • Race 2 - $6.4 million
  • Cocktail - $4.3 million
  • Total – $16.1 million (average $3.22 million per film)

Rank 7 Ajay Devgn: Singham Returns has done well and so have most of his films directed by Rohit Shetty. Apart from those, Son of Sardaar was a decent hit. Devgn is ahead of Akshay Kumar by a small margin. Films like Action Jackson don’t perform well overseas. If the film collects $5 million or more, Ajay will take the 6th spot, if it collects less than $3.25 million, Ajay will go below Akshay to Rank 8.

  • Singham Returns – 4.3 million
  • Satyagraha – $2.4 million
  • Himmatwala – $1.3 million
  • Son of Sardaar – $2.8 million
  • Bol Bachchan – $4.1 million
  • Total – $15.1 million (average $3.02 million per film)

Rank 8 Akshay Kumar: Singh Is Kinng (7.1 million), Housefull 2 ($6 million), Heyy Baby ($4.4 million) are several others were hugely successful films. Back in 2007 – 2008, Akshay movies used to fare better than Aamir, Salman and Hrithik’s. But his last few films have under-performed big time. His biggest hit in the last 2 years is Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty.

  • Entertainment – 2.8 million
  • Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty – $4.2 million
  • Boss – $2.75 million
  • Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara – $1.85 million
  • Special 26 – $2.75 million
  • Total – $14.25 million (average $2.85 million per film)

And finally, we also have the list of the Top 10 highest grossing films overseas. Shahrukh Khan has a staggering 6 films in the Top 10, Aamir Khan has 2, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan have one each.

  • 1. Dhoom 3 – $ 31 million
  • 2. 3 Idiots – $ 25.9 million
  • 3. My Name Is Khan – $22.98 million
  • 4. Chennai Express - $ 18.95 million
  • 5. Happy New Year – $ 15.9 million
  • 6. Bang Bang - $13.5 million
  • 7. Jab Tak Hai Jaan - $13.25 million
  • 8. Don 2 - $11.25 million
  • 9. Kick - $11.3 million
  • 10. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna - $10.8 million

  • No comparison with srk in overseas markets plz publish the list of blockbuster movies in overseas market where srk dominant by 80 percent bb while rest deliver 20 percent amir has only two bb which are already included in above list

  • One big thing to be noted are the release dates of aamir’s movies..all of them except talaash were released during christmas time which is the best period in the overseas markets which makes a big difference bc that is the only most profitable time to release a hindi movie in overseas. for MNIK to collect that much in february speaks volumes about what SRK means in the overseas markets.

  • Agreed wit d rankings! @indicine… But am confused kind off??? Neither critic review nor indicine review is out and u already narrating how overseas box office will not appreciate AXTION JACKSON???? Why not wait??? Foreign location! Well choreographed! Stunt (Hollywood) actions! Already popular and unique songs…..above all d 10million above viewers in you tube for AJ trailer…. Don’t come from India alone which both u d neutral audience and I know???? Anys.. Will just tell u “DONT COUNT YOUR EGGS BEFORE A GENUINE CHICK HATCHES THEM”!!!
Never d less agree with your ranking….and my mind still tells me SRK and SAlman r suppose to b on top above AAMIR BUT DOSENT have to do with d QUALITATIVE MOVIES AAMIR does… Just that his releases r on sporadic intervals

  • @romance puen, despite no dhoom brand aamir will keep ruling overseas. Because aamir’s star power will make every movie of him BB in overseas. Just accept the fact that srk’s dominance is over everywhere be it in India or overseas. Aamir has taken the throne. PK will create unthinkable record in overseas, no chance for fan or raees to break dhoom 3, 3 idiots or pk’s records. Aamir is king of overseas.

  • @sky – Why don’t you see in the other way ??? Kjo came with SRK and bagged the highest grossing film in overseas four times…lol….For your info….am just talking about the present situation as am not aware of past collection….every film has a selling point which makes it sell in market be it overseas or india…with Kjo anf Yrf SRK the king of romance came and gave away highest grossers….while AAMIR had the awesome oscar returning Laggan, the brand Dhoom, tye masla Gajhni, Yrf backed returning Kajol factor in Fanna and many more….and most importantly xams factor….talking about Don 2….it doesn’t have a strong brand power or nri entertaining story or uniqueness of 3IDIOTS….still it did good in overseas because of SRK…Come out of all the lame talking of Internet like AAMIR has no fan or HNY CE 100 crs grosser in overseas because of DEEPIKA etc…a film runs as a whole package with some USP….Its due to SRKs usp CE earned 100 crs overseas….its Aamir + Dhoom brand which hiked up the excitement and made it earned 30$ overseas…its just not about you but to all who are fighting with excuses many a miles away from reality in Internet.

  • And to all who thinks Aamir kicked out SRK in overseas…aamir may havr earned highest grossing status overseas….but its SRK only who eanrned 100 even 150 crs with not even half star people in overseas and TMK director and non holiday in overseas….lol.

  • its very tragic to see saif ali khan and ajay devgn’s names in the list!!!
very disappointing. their movie except singham, has all been disasters.
both of them should retire. if a person like rohit shetty was not there, ajay devgn would’ve been extinct long time back…in 2011!!
anyways, i’m not going to take this ranking seriously, just like other readers.
its as if KHANS only rule indian industry. others are garbage or what?? i’ll go with reality…thats better. now we’ve evidances of FOX star studios n lionsgate n even canadian projects banking on a star( i’m not naming him)….its the best proof, who’s regarded the “international” in india.

  • Worldwide last 5 movies of khans:- srk- raone=240 crs, don2=215 crs, jthj=232 crs, ce=422 crs, hny=370 crs, total=1479crs, avg=295.8crs… Aamir khan:- tzp=105 crs(not sure), ghazini=185 crs, 3idiots=395 crs, talaash=180 crs, dhoom3=542 crs, total=1407 crs, avg=281.4 crs….. Salman:-bodyguard=240 crs, ett=327 crs, dabangg2=265 crs, jai ho=185 crs, kick=377 crs, total=1394 crs, avg=278.8 crs.. So worldwide ranking is- srk>aamir>salman.. Final leaders- domestic=salman, overseas=aamir, worldwide=srk..

  • the so called blockbuster ghajini collecting less than avg hit kank in overseas is enough 2 prove who is bigger star in overseas

  • in overseas talaash didn’t grossed even half of 3i,so it’s clr dat 3i collected bcz of gud script n not aamir.

  • SRK has given back to back 8 blockbusters in overseas n overall 18.aamir has just 4 in his entire career n u r saying dat he has gone ahead of srk…

  • Did you Say Aamir is number One in overseas?
If You Are saying Aamir is number one then What About R madhvan, Sharman Joshi, Uday Chopra Abishek? They are also Number One
In Every poll Aamir is Behind Ranbeer kapoor and his Fans are talking about Popularity
Aamir is good Actor But popular?? u must be kidding

  • Aamir is the King of overseas by a huge margin. Till today only 2 films have crossed $25 million in overseas….. both are Aamir’s. All Hail the Legend.

  • @sky – Diwali is holiday period in overseas ??? Lol….Now who is blind here :-D….FYI may AAMIR films earned huge with DHHOM brand and all but best collection per screen still with SRK….No one has ever denied that the muslim factor played an important role in overseas huge collection of MNIK….Its the USP or Xfactor of the film as i earlier mentioned….Don’t go by the logic of internet people as a film is a package which needs to have various aspects to be sold in both INDIA and overseas…as we are talking about overtseas here…AAMIR may have gone ahead with DHOOM brand and all but its SRK who remains constant with best collection per screen and many more….keep your detailed explanation with you as you always tends to ignore the x factors of AAMIRs film such as masla, dhoom brand etc and even try to say a non holiday diwali as holiday for SRK film…lol….SRK will be the most consistant superstar overseas…lol

  • @sky u said u think fanaa collected more than Don in 2006. i will say stop thinking it doesnt suit you. The Kajol starrer YRF produced movie Fanaa collected 6m while Don collected 7m in overseas.

  • Great work indicine.Totally agreed with u.Collection of last 5 movies is the best criteria to judge star ranking bcoz 3 movies seems less and above 5 movies seems too much.Aamir khan is ahead of Srk in overseas without any doubt in present.

  • @indicine any special reason why u r considering only 5 movies? there is no comparison between 18 BB star and 3 BB star in overseas.

  • @Bhai ka fan Looks like u r not aware of Aamir being mobbed everyday in USA by fans during Dhoom 3 shooting.Dhoom 3 not made aamir popular in overseas but aamir made Dhoom 3 biggest grosser in overseas.

  • @iamsrk_fan Get ready with more excuses next month when aamir will have 3 biggest grossers in overseas bcoz PK abhi baaki hai mere dost.lol

  • This is a ridiculous ranking! Don’t agree with it. Taking only last 5 films or so would not give any sort of ranking! Agreed, Aamir Khan is seriously changing the Overseas Business and continuously challenging SRK’s films there. But, that too has happened only from his last two films! Just because, of 3I and Dhoom3 collecting close to $58M overseas doesn’t state Aamir as No.1 overseas star! To my view or even most of the people, SRK was, is and would still be the King of Overseas – just that HNY did 16m, it again proves is supremacy! It’s idiotic to even compare SRK’s total overseas collections of his films to any actor to date.

  • Where is talash?? Overseas me to movie sirf movie Aamir k naam se hi to chalti hai
Then how come talash and dhobi ghat not in the list??

  • @Indicine , this Ranking is not fare. If you include Guzaarish in the list you should have included Dhoobi gut also. what would you do if it had become a commercial hit. Include some movies or such numbers of movies for anybody’s favor is not fare. Its clearly proved Sharukh is the King in Overseas and world wide.No one care about your Ranking.

People agree Ranking done by some official authorities such as Box Office India.

The Box Office India’s November Ranking list is as follows.

    Domestic:

    1-Salman -1285 Points
    2-Sharukh -1202 Points
    3-AAmir -909 Points

    Overseas:

    1-sharukh -1164 Points
    2-AAmir – 875 Points
    4-Salman -392 Points

    World wide :

    1-Sharukh -1435
    2-Salman -1363
    3-Aamir -1084

If we sum up the total Of Domestic+Overseas+World wide, the figure is as follows.

    1-Sharukh -3801 Pnts
    2-Salman -3040 Pnts
    3-AAmir -2868 Pnts.

King Sharukh is the Real King of Bollywood and also he is the Biggest film star in the world as well as The most popular actor in the Earth Which is declared by many Global Authorities such as BBC, The Guardian,The Times any many others..

Be proud that the Biggest Film star in the World and the Second richest Actor is from our country.

    • @everyone, the same people who are complaining now are those who agreed with the ranking in September. This is OUR ranking. You don’t have to necessarily agree with it. We think 5 films is just about perfect to give our readers an idea about an actor’s CURRENT standing in the industry.

And finally about BOI’s list, we don’t agree with their ranking system. It is designed to work in favour of actors who work in 1-2 films a year. Akshay goes way down the list, below Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham, just because he does 3-4 movies a year. Aamir Khan is at No 2 only because he does fewer films.

  • @indicine
you didn’t post my comment on ajay’s movies.. i am writing it again with some addition.. please post it..

    thank you..

    Ajay Devgn :
    Shivaay (2016)
    Golmaal 4
    Kanchana remake
    Rajneeti 2

    Ranbir Kapoor :
    Mr and Mrs Tapori (rumoured)

    Salman Khan :
    Dhoom 4

  • @Sachin 11 Lol
Please make some sense when you speak
    Aamir Made Dhoom Series popular??
    Hahaha
What happened at the time of “The Laash”
No offence to Aamir and His Fans
Aamir is only depend On Good scripts and strong content
He can not make Average story movie Hit or BB like Salman And SRK
If you Are saying Aamir Is ahead of SRK
you can see the list Even Avrg movies like CE and HNY are collecting 100 crs in overseas ( HNY will definitely collect 100 cr in 2nd phase)
