Munna Michael Movie Review

Tiger Shroff debuted in a Sabbir Khan movie ‘Heropanti’ which ended up being a surprise hit at the box office. The pair came together once again with ‘Baaghi’, which was also a big hit. So when they come together for a third outing with a film like Munna Michael, will this prove to be the icing on the cake for their partnership? Only time will tell, but the promos have focused more on the dance part and less on the action part.

Story: Munna (Tiger) is an orphan who was rescued by a do-gooder from a ditch. He grows up as a huge Michael Jackson fan and tries to emulate his moves. This helps him become a fantastic director. He falls in love with a girl called Dolly (Niddhi). But the twist arises when a gangster called Mahinder (Nawazuddin) also falls in love with the same girl. He enlists the help of Munna to make him learn dancing in a month so that he can impress the girl. Comedy ensues when Munna tries to teach him to dance. Does the hero and villain come to know they love the same girl? Watch the film to find out.

Screenplay and Direction: Sabbir Khan knows how to direct movies. He gets the tone of Munna Michael right too for the most part but it all starts feeling a little predictable as dance set-pieces make way for action scenes and then he repeats the same cycle throughout the length of the movie. It gets tiring after a while but the comedy elements keep it going. It is a fun watch when the dancing sequences between Nawazuddin and Tiger take place. Munna Michael loses momentum after the second half and then picks up pace right before the climax. The climax is good but it nothing unique or exhilarating. That only means Sabbir Khan has delivered a good template movie.

Munna Michael is a technically well shot film as both the action and dance choreography scenes don’t come across as tacky or cheesy. The production design gives the film a big scale but the problem is that it looks too much like the movie was shot in a studio except for a few parts here and there. The costume design is filmy. The music is good and the songs do make you swag. Main Hoon, Ding Dang, Swag all work well within the nature of the movie. The background music is loud, however.

Acting: Tiger Shroff is in his natural element once again getting to do what he loves the most. He gets to kick, punch, and turn his body into a real life fidget spinner with both his action and dancing. He’s good in this movie and is getting better with every outing. Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s addition to the film can feel a bit gimmicky at first but it is not a bad choice. He makes himself a part of the texture of the film, although we wish he had more to do in the movie other than be a comic villain staple. Niddhi Agerwal, the debutante, is a decent actress and makes do with her role but there’s not much for her to do in the film at all.

Conclusion: Munna Michael is a decent entertainer that gives the audience what it promises through the trailers. It showcases the young star Tiger Shroff’s dancing skills. If you’re in the mood for some light hearted fun, then Munna Michael is a good movie for you to watch this weekend. If you crave something other than the typical masala fares of Bollywood, then stay far away from the theatres. Munna Michael might work because of Tiger but it will be interesting to see Sabbir and Tiger both experimenting with different sort of films in the future.

Pros:

  • Tiger and Nawauddin’s scenes
  • The dance choreography
  • Niddhi Agerwal does well in her first movie
  • The entertainment quotient is high

Cons:

  • The predictability of the story
  • The pace falls after the interval
  • Nawazuddin takes time to find his feet in the movie
  • The sets feel like studios

Rating: ★★★☆☆

  • Bahubali 2 has set such high standards in audiences mind..
Any below par product will b rejected by audience..
Even big stars cant save mediocre products now..
    Example tubelight..jagga..
Have less hopes from jhms n tepk too..

    • Ya set standards for cartoon like movie…Do u know the hindi version of bahubali in overseas couldn’t even able to beat raees. Fucking overhead film

    • Ya set standards of cartoon like movie… Fucking overhyped movie just for one shitty question they made another part.

    • The critics are a bunch of A—s. Please ignore their amateur comments, SEE and JUDGE the movie for yourself. They have caused me to miss several good movies, that I ended up seeing on the small screen.

  • Honestly till now Tiger is only doing those movies which are in his comfort zone . He will be seen in Baaghi 2 and Rambo which will not be anything different till now . He is also doing SOTY 2 which may be different than routine action and dance . I still feel Nawaz has not been used properly at least in big movies . He made a huge impact in BB but I hope he gets some kind of Success in solo movies such as Babumoshai Bandookbaaz . Niddhi Agarwal looks beautiful and should get more movies if MM becomes successful . The weekend collections will give a very clear idea whether this will fail or emerge successful .

  • Good reviewe indicine..not harsh towards director and actor like some other critics normally do..you know the limitation of actor and director..thats how the review should be. Keep doing good work.
