‘The Accidental PM’: Bollywood Movie on Manmohan Singh

A Bollywood movie will be made on former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh. It will be based on Sanjaya Baru’s controversial book ‘The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’.

The voice over at the very beginning of the film, will have the following lines “It takes years of labour and exemplary political acumen to even dream of heading a state. But this is the story of a man who possessed neither, and yet went on to become a prime minister. A man, who was unaware even a day before his anointment, that he will be PM of the World’s largest democracy”

The producers of the film are going for a big release, as ‘The Accidental PM’ will be released in India and overseas in more than 12 different languages. A teaser of the film is expected to released on August 30.

While a young actor from Punjab is expected to play the role of Manmohan Singh, Manoj Bajpayee has been approached to play Sanjaya Baru.

“The movie will be a true reflection of Mr Sanjaya Baru’s book. The endeavour is not to create any sensation but to present a true account of what transpired during those ten years which changed the political spectrum of the country and fortunes of India’s oldest political party – Congress” said Sunil Bohra, who has produced several films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Shahid, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and more.

Bohra said he decided to make a feature film and not a documentary on the book, after an eight-month-long research.

“Having realised the significance of the unparalleled content the book has, we have decided to make a commercial movie out of it and not confine it to a documentary” he said.

Sanjaya Baru was Manmohan Singh’s media advisor for a period of 4 years between May 2004 to August 2008. He released a book in 2014, ahead of the general elections in which the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance came to power with a huge majority – the first party to get a clear majority since 1984.

  • Casting should be easy.. all that they have to do is get a man who looks like Manmohan Singh. He doesn’t have to speak or emote.. just act lifeless.

Such a good finance minister.. but he never was a leader.. sad that he became a puppet in the end and a man indirectly responsible for scams worth thousands and thousands of crores.

  • My Ajay Sir is best suited for such roles.
Both Manmohan Singh and Ajay Sir are shy people.
    Both have huge fan following.
Both are controlled by ladies.Kajol mam controls my Ajay sir like Sonia Gandhi mam used to control Manmohan.

  • My Ajay sir will like to name this movie as Son of Sardaar 2.
Sir will make an entry standing on 2 horses while playing Manmohan.Crowd will whistle.

  • The accidental PM indeed. The post of “PM” was never been deteriorated like this before.
Those 10 years were a curse for Indian democracy. Such was the domination of that particular family in Indian politics that they made a highly qualified person (like Mr Singh) a mute spectator.

@TIger : No doubt whatever he has achieved will be a dream for other scholars, but don’t put himself in the category of “Legend” for god sake. A legend should prove his potential at all the fronts, even though if he faces some kind of pressure or restriction, but that was not the case with Manmohan Singh.
Agreed, that he was appointed as PM on the “pleasure” of Gandhi Family, but still he should have intervened when number of scams were being scripted in the background while keeping his “honest” face at the front. What if he would have taken his stand? The maximum they could have done is, would have replaced him with another puppet. But then his image would have been remain fair and intact. But unfortunately, now every body knows him for wrong reasons and no body pays a heed to his educational excellence.

    @Challa : “Wrong party” – Agreed.
“Right person to lead the country” – Strongly disagree.
The person who happily accepts to be a mere puppet in someone’s hand can never lead a country. Nothing against Congress and I will give an example from the Congress party itself.
I guess you would have heard of “Kiran Reddy” , former CM of Andhra Pradesh (and a Congress leader). The Gandhi Family sitting at Delhi tried to manhandle Reddy and were putting sheer pressure (to pass the proposal of separate Telangana). But Reddy, who was holding the respect of people of Andhra, opted to resign rather being a robot of Gandhi’s hand.
Now, I am not saying whether Reddy was right or wrong, but at least he had that dignity to take his decisions, but same can’t be said about Manmohan Singh, who religiously followed the “orders” of that incompetent family.

  • If qualification is the only parameter to lead a country, then better appoint the RBI Governor/UPSC chairman as PM , in that way we can save millions of taxpayers money which simply goes waste in the long electoral process.

  • @mohit:

This is the same weakest PM due to whom we are now the 3rd largest economy in the World which was 10th largest in 2004 when he took charge.

He is the same weakest PM whose nuclear deal with USA help our 56 inch ka seenewala getting standing ovation.

He is the same weakest PM whose FREE ECONOMY is the base of our strongest PM and govt’s whole policy.

Ummid hain abhi ke liye itna kaafi hain #mohit!!

  • Film name should be ” Katputli ” of Gandhi Parivar . He signed only contract of Robert Vadera .

  • If anybody want to make film on Best P M Modi . One & Only One can di Modi role I.e Paresh Rawal . Namo Namo .

  • He could have taken India to a whole new level …!!!!
This Sonia and rahi needs to be thrown out of our country…!!!!

  • @Tiger.. who cares what you think? Majority know that he was a failure as PM. Weakest PM of India was MMS. Period.

The mistake is not yours, the problem is the cult you belong to. That’s the biggest cause for all the unhappiness, unease and suffering in the world.

  • He is certainly not the weakest PM ever. That title belongs to Rajeev Gandhi.

Manmohan Singh’s biggest weakness was he was a weak orator. He did shine his way as the Finance Minister & brought some reforms in his period (though the cons outweigh the pros in his tenure)

But he is certainly not the weakest PM. Way better than Rajeev Gandhi!

  • Sounds very interesting indeed!!! I m very excited to know about d circumstances which made him a puppet from a great economist n intellectual!!!

  • @mohit:

Can you deny the points I made???

Didn’t he make India 3rd Biggest economy in the world from 10th???

Didn’t the Bombay stock exchange reach over 25,000 from 7000 during his 10 years period???

Isn’t our current government’s whole policy depend upon his FREE ECONOMY concept???

Didn’t modi get standing ovation in US Congress by mentioning his Indo-US nuclear deal???

  • Some people are calling him weakest PM of our country. Maybe because he can’t say lies so loudly. Eg-……..

‘I have 56 inched chest aur main Pakistan ko Dhul chata dunga.’

‘I will return black money within 100 days.’

‘I will deposit 15-20 lakh to everyone’s account and bring ASSCHE din them’

‘I will make India corruption free’

‘I will create 2cr jobs per annum.’

‘I will bring back Daud to India because I have 56 inched chest.’

‘I will add POK to India’.

    ‘Hafiz Saeed ko sabak sikhaunga’.

‘I will increase farmers income upto 200% within a year.’
    And blah blah blah….!!!!

The great Manmohan Singh ji will be remembered for his works not for his Bhashan-Baazi!!!

  • @Tiger, India is / was at such a stage where the country would grow under any government. Real credit for MMS goes back to the work he did in 90s under Narasimha Rao government as Finance Minister. He was total failure as PM. Leadership comes into play, when there are scams. MMS was silent and helpless when these scams happened under his rule. That shows his weakness.

Listing out a major ones, there are many more, you can google it. Can you deny this???

    Coal scam: (2012)
The CAG report on the irregularities in auctioning 194 coal blocks created a massive uproar in political circles with the government being heavily criticised for causing a loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer.

    2G spectrum scam: (2008)
In 2008, the country issued 122 new telecom licences to several domestic companies that had little or no experience in the telecom sector, and at a price set in 2001. It is estimated that the spectrum scam led to a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the government.

    Chopper scam: (2012)
Former Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi was allegedly paid bribes to swing a Rs 3,600 crore deal for procuring 12 choppers from Italian firm Finmeccanica to ferry VVIPS

    Tatra truck scam: (2012)
The Enforecement Directorate had registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in April, 2013 against Vectra Chairman Ravi Rishi and few other firms after former Army chief Gen V K Singh had alleged that he was offered a Rs 14 crore bribe in September, 2010 to clear the purchase of a tranche of 1,676 Tatra trucks for the Army.

    CWG scam: (2010)
Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi and nine others were charged for allegedly cheating, conspiring and causing a loss of over Rs 90 crore to the exchequer in CWG-related corruption case.

  • @xzone:

Yes, during his time there was a clear dominance of a particular family. That’s absolutely disgusting and shame for India.

But, has anything changed now??? Isn’t there any family dominance right now??? I think you are enough intelligence to notice that the rulling party can’t even make a CM candidate for a state without the permission of a particular family. Even our strongest PM’s name was recommended for the PM candidate by that family and then the party sidelined Adwani ji and we got our strongest PM ever.

I don’t think you are not aware that each & every union minister need report that particular family after a period (including strongest PM). If the government wants to introduce a new bill at first they send it’s draft to that particular family for recommendations. Later they introduce it in parliaments (if gets permission).

You guys are calling Respected Manmohan ji puppet. According to the same logic the whole union govt is a puppet..

P.S- M a big hater of both Cong & BJP but also a big fan of legends Manmohan ji & Atal ji..

  • @mohit:

First and foremost, I am not at all a supporter of Congress. And why should I deny the scams you have mentioned??? Even I had written several articles in regional newspapers (Assamese) on UPA government and my state’s (Assam) Congress government’s scams and corruption.

You are free to bash Congress & Gandhi family for those scams or anything else. I won’t reply. But I have huge respect for a guy (Manmohan ji) who had made India a modern & prosperous India be it as a FM or PM. A simple question…. If he was total failure as PM then WTH India had chosen him for 2nd term???

Yes he was mostly silence over those scams. But we should not forget our current PM is doing the same. Lalit Modi scam was there, people are being killed due to Vyapam, DDCA scam was there, Khadse scam is going on. But our current PM yet to say a single word on them. It doesn’t mean that he was involved in those scams!!!!

  • @Tiger : Before I start, let me clarify that I am kind of politically neutral and hence, my views should not be judged as if I am patronizing or favoring a particular political party or person.

Now, Even you will agree that CONgress (a party with long and widespread political heritage) took the people of this country as granted and they thought, they will continue getting votes by playing the cheap agenda of communalism and caste, but they failed miserably and as a result , shrank to a double digit party. That proves that people were disgusted with their policies and they just wanted to get rid of them at any cost ( and hence the humiliating defeat in 2014).
Coming to Modi and BJP, they too are not doing something which we can categorize as “Great Work”, but yes, as of now, they seem to be the best “available option” , because we can’t trust the CONgress again, at least for next 5-10 years considering the devastation they incurred to our country between 2004-2014 and there is no chance for that “Delhi Dharna&Nautanki Party” too.

Next, you claimed you are a big hater of ‘Both’ Congress and BJP, but that doesn’t seem to be true at least by going through your comments. Almost every reader of indicine will agree that you genuinely hate Modi and BJP and you don’t leave a single chance to criticize them even though if they are doing something good. In the same way, you love everyone who is against Modi and Central government and the way you are giving data/statistics in the favor of MMS and Congress, reckons my belief.

You are ready to give credits to Manmohan with statistics like “3rd largest economy”, “Indo-US deal”, but you are not ready to accept the fact that under the regime of the same person, more than 200000 cr were drained out from our country. And perhaps he is the only second PM (after Rajiv Gandhi- Bofors scam) who was directly convicted for a scam (Although later, charges were removed against him in coal scam).
So my friend, look into the broader picture instead of being a religious fringe, because how much ever you criticize Modi and BJP, you will have to agree that almost all ministers (I used ‘almost’ because exceptions can be found everywhere) at central government are honest and dedicated towards their work and perhaps that’s the reason, no major scams have been reported so far in the tenure of the current government.
