Most successful actors in Bollywood: Detailed

This article is an analysis of the success ratio of the films in which the Top 7 stars of India have appeared in since 2000. Only the films where these actors had a ‘substantial’ or ‘significant’ role where accounted for. Special appearances where the star had limited screen time aren’t included. We have slightly tweaked the analysis from last time to include films with ‘Above Average’ and ‘Semi-Hit’ under the ‘successful film’ category.

We start off with Aamir Khan, one of the most successful actors in recent times.

Aamir Khan

  • Failures: Mela (flop), Dil Chahta Hai (average – was a decent success only in select cities), Mangal Pandey (below average).
  • Successes: Lagaan (hit), Fanaa (super hit), Rang De Basanti (hit), Taare Zameen Par (super hit), Ghajini (All time blockbuster), 3 Idiots (All time blockbuster), Dhobi Ghat (semi hit), Talaash (semi hit) and Dhoom 3 (All Time Blockbuster). Total successes: 9.

Aamir Khan Total Films – 12, Failures – 3, Successes – 9, Success ratio is 75%

Aamir Khan has featured in 12 films in the last 14 years, out of which 9 films have been successful. Dil Chahta Hai, one of his best films, was an average grosser at the box office, even though the general belief is that the film was a huge success. Aamir’s last failure was Mangal Pandey in 2005, after which every single film of his has recovered its investment. 3 Idiots and Dhoom 3 are his biggest money-spinners to date.

Ajay Devgn

  • Failures: Deewane (flop), Raju Chacha (flop), Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke (flop), Tera Mera Saath Rahen (flop), Company (below average), Hum Kisise Kum Nahin (flop), The Legend of Bhagat Singh (flop), Deewaangee (below average), Bhoot (average), Chori Chori (flop), Parwana (flop), Zameen (flop), Khakee (average), Yuva (flop), Raincoat (flop), Insan (flop), Blackmail (flop), Zameer (flop), Tango Charlie (flop), Main Aisa Hi Hoon (flop), Shikhar (flop), Omkara (flop), Cash (flop), Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag (flop), Halla Bol (flop), Sunday (below average), U Me Aur Hum (below average), Mehbooba (flop),  London Dreams (flop), Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (average), Aakrosh (flop), Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (below average), Rascals (flop), Tezz (flop), Satyagraha (flop), Himmatwala (flop). Total Failure – 36
  • Successes:  Qayamat (semi hit), Gangaajal (above average), Kaal (above average),  Apaharan (above average), Golmaal (semi hit), All the Best (above average), Golmaal Returns (hit), Raajneeti (blockbuster), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (hit), Golmaal 3 (blockbuster), Singham (super hit), Bol Bachchan (hit), Son of Sardaar (hit). Total successes – 13

Ajay Devgn Total Films – 49, Failures – 36, Successes – 13, Success ratio is 26.5%

Ajay wasn’t a commercially successful actor until he started working in comedy films. His partnership with director Rohit Shetty has helped push a terrific actor like Ajay into the big league.  However, his overall success ratio is quite poor at 26.5 percent. Only 1 in 4 films of the actor have gone on to be successful at the box office. He has films like Singham 2 and Action Jackson coming up. Both are likely to rake in the moolah at the ticket window and hopefully increase his success ratio too.

Akshay Kumar

  • Failures: Hera Pheri (average), Dhadkan (average), Khiladi 420 (flop), Ek Rishtaa (below average), Ajnabee (average), Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (flop), Aankhen (average),  Talaash (flop), Khakee (average), Police Force: An Inside Story (flop), Aan (flop), Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin (flop), Hatya: The Murder (flop), Aitraaz (average), Ab Tumhare Hawale Waton Saathiyon (flop), Insan (flop), Bewafaa (below average),  Deewana Huye Paagal (flop), Dosti: Friends Forever (below average), Mere Jeevan Saathi (flop), Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (flop), Jaan-E-Mann (flop), Tashan (below average), Chandni Chowk to China (flop), 8 X 10 Tasveer (flop), Blue (below average),  Khatta Meetha (below average), Action Replayy (flop),  Patiala House (below average), Thank You (average), Desi Boyz (below average), Joker (flop), Khiladi 786 (average), Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara (flop), Boss (flop).
  • Successes: Awara Paagal Deewana (above average), Andaaz (hit), Waqt (above average), Garam Masala (semi hit), Mujhse Shaadi Karoge (hit), Phir Hera Pheri (super hit), Bhagam Bhag (hit), Namastey London (hit), Heyy Babyy (hit), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (hit), Welcome (blockbuster), Singh Is Kinng (super hit), Kambakkht Ishq (above average), De Dana Dan (above average), Housefull (hit), Tees Maar Khan (semi hit), Housefull 2 (super hit), Rowdy Rathore (blockbuster), OMG! Oh My God (super hit), Special 26 (hit).

Akshay Kumar Total Films – 54, Failures – 35, Successes – 19, Success ratio is 35.1%

Akshay has featured in 54 films in the last 14 years, which is an average of close to 4 films every year! He is probably the only top star in the industry, who puts his superstardom on the line multiple times every year and yet maintains a healthy success ratio of 35% i.e one in 3 Akshay Kumar films work at the box office. 2007 was the turning point in his career, he gave 4 hits in a single year and was considered to be the biggest crowd -puller in the industry. His career has gone through ups and downs, 2013 wasn’t a great year for him, but he has quite a few promising films lined up for release in 2014.

Krrish 3 Box Office Collections

  • Failures: Fiza (flop),  Yaadein (flop), Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage (flop), Na Tum Jaano Na Hum (flop), Mujhse Dosti Katroge (flop), Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (flop), Lakshya (below average), Kites (flop), Guzaarish (flop).
  • Successes: Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai (blockbuster), Mission Kashmir (semi hit), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (blockbuster), Koi.. Mil Gaya (blockbuster), Krrish (blockbuster), Dhoom 2 (blockbuster), Jodhaa Akbar (hit), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (hit), Agneepath (hit), Krrish 3 (All Time Blockbuster).

Hrithik Roshan Total Films – 19, Failures – 9, Successes – 10, Success Ratio is 52.6%

Hrithik’s debut film was the biggest grosser of 2000, but most of his films that followed failed to make a mark. Post Koi Mil Gaya, Hrithik has been choosy and has consistently delivered some huge grossers. 2006 was the biggest year of his career, as two of his films Krrish and Dhoom 2 were the biggest grossers of the year. In the last 10 years, 7 of his 9 films have worked at the box office. Overall, his success ratio is pretty good and should only improve from here on.

Jai Ho Box Office Prediction

  • Failures:  Chal Mere Bhai (average), Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega (average), Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye (flop), Tumko Na Bhool Payenge (flop),  Yeh Hai Jalwa (flop), Garv: Pride And Honour (below average), Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa (flop), Lucky: No Time for Love (below average), Kyon Ki (flop), Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar (flop), Jaan-E-Mann (flop), Marigold (flop), God Tussi Great Ho (flop), Yuvraaj (flop), London Dreams (flop), Veer (below average). Total failures – 17
  • Successes: Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (above average), Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (flop), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (above average),  Tere Naam (above average), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (hit), Main Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (semi hit), No Entry (super hit), Partner (blockbuster), Wanted (super hit), Dabangg (all time blockbuster), Ready (blockbuster), Bodyguard (blockbuster), Ek Tha Tiger (blockbuster), Dabangg 2 (blockbuster), Jai Ho (above average). Total success – 14

Salman Khan Total Films – 31, Failures – 16, Successes – 15, Success Ratio is 48.3%

Salman’s glorious run that included 5 back-to-back blockbusters came to an end this year with Jai Ho. His winning streak of box office money-spinners was probably the best since Rajesh Khanna’s 15 continuous hits record. Even though Salman has consistently featured in 2 movies a year, his success ratio is very good at around 45%.

Shahrukh Khan

  • Failures: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (flop), One 2 Ka 4 (flop), Asoka (flop),  Swades (flop), Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke and Paheli (flop). Total failures – 6
  • Successes: Josh (above average), Mohabbatein (super hit), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (Blockbuster), Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam (above average), Chalte Chalte (semi hit), Devdas (hit), Kal Ho Naa Ho (hit), Main Hoon Na (hit), Veer Zaara (super hit), Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (hit), Don (hit), Chak De India (Blockbuster), Om Shanti Om (Blockbuster), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (Blockbuster), My Name Is Khan (hit), Ra.One (hit), Don 2 (hit), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (hit), Chennai Express (All Time Blockbuster). Total success – 19

Shahrukh Khan Total Films – 25, Failures – 6, Successes – 19, Success ratio is 76%

Even though SRK has appeared in as many as 25 films in the given time period, his success rate is only comparable to Aamir Khan, who is on-par with SRK but has less than half the number of film releases. While many will argue that Ra.One wasn’t a clean hit at the box office, but the fact remains that it was declared a hit by the trade even though a few distributors lost money.  SRK’s consistency is even more amazing since his last failure was almost 9 years back in 2005. However, when it comes to big box office blockbusters, SRK is behind Salman, Aamir who have consistently delivered huge grossers in the last 4 years or so. In the overall list of highest blockbusters, he is behind Hrithik.

Ranbir Kapoor

  • Failures – Saawariya (disaster), Rocket Singh (flop), Anjaana Anjaani (Average), Besharam (Flop).
  • Successes – Bachna Ae Haseeno (semi hit), Wake Up Sid (semi hit), Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani (super hit), Rajneeti (blockbuster), Rockstar (semi hit), Barfi (super hit), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (blockbuster).

Ranbir Kapoor Total Films – 11, Failures – 4, Successes – 7, Success ratio is 63.6%

The new superstar on the block, Ranbir Kapoor, has already started giving 150 crore+ grossers at the box office. He has age on his side and he is also considered to be one of the best actors in the country. With every top director wanting to sign him for a film, Ranbir could soon enter Aamir – SRK territory. He already had a very good success ratio of around 64%.

The ranking of actors in terms of profibility (the higher the success %, the higher is the profibility):

  • 1. Shahrukh Khan – 76%
  • 2. Aamir Khan – 75%
  • 3. Ranbir Kapoor – 63.6%
  • 3. Hrithik Roshan – 52.6%
  • 4. Salman Khan – 48.3%
  • 5. Akshay Kumar – 35.1%
  • 6. Ajay Devgn – 26.5%

The actors with the most number of clean hits (Hit or better only):

  • 1. Shah Rukh Khan (16)
  • 2. Akshay Kumar (13)
  • 3. Hrithik Roshan (9)
  • 4. Salman Khan (8)
  • 5. Ajay Devgn (7)
  • = 5. Aamir Khan (7)
  • 7. Ranbir Kapoor (4)

Actors with the most ‘blockbusters’

  • 1. Salman Khan – 6 (one all time blockbuster)
  • = 1. Hrithik Roshan – 6 (one all time blockbuster)
  • 3. Shahrukh Khan – 5 (one all time blockbuster)
  • 4. Aamir Khan – 3 (two all time blockbusters)
  • 5. Akshay Kumar – 2
  • = Ranbir Kapoor – 2
  • = Ajay Devgn – 2

  • SRK is the only bollywood heor with no disasters….and “Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke” was a delayed release with SRK’s voice dubbed by someone….its his kindness that he approved to release that film 10years later…It should not have included actually….so as it suggests SRK IS THE MOST SUCESSFUCL BOLLYWOOD ACTOR & HE IS KNOWN AS KING OF BOLLYWOOD

  • Why take it from only 2000 or have a 14 year span? Either from last 20 years or last 10 years would be better.

How is SRK behind hrithik in the overall blockbuster list? SRK has k3g, CDI, OSO, RNBDJ, CE = 5 since 2000 n 7 since 1995. Hrithik has k3g, Krrish, dhoom 2 n krrish 3 = 4.

  • ZNMD is a bigger hit than Dil Chhahta Hai? What a joke.

    BOI had rated it superhit.

Against a budet of 140 million it has collected around 900 million and still you say it was average?

I guess you should only stick to the last 5 years movies or the period that you have really solid data and reliable information to show.

This article is just an hastily made to create confusion and fighting amongst its readers in the comment section.

    Ignoring it already.

  • akshay fans talking bout him positively cos he does many films – well most of those films, especially since 2009, are flops or not hits. Not like anyone is forcing him to do so many films which flop

Btw, indicine, only hits should be counted as success not semi-hit.

  • Aamir with just 12 films in these years!!!
And thus when an Aamir film comes, there is a lot of anticipation behind it,as compared to an Akki or Ajay film.
These success ratios are affected by the no. of films they have done…
Had Aamir or SRK done 40-50 films, their success ratio would’nt have this high.

  • How can Hera Pheri and Dhadkan be failures if they were Average affairs…….Anywayz…….AKSHAY KUMAR is the best……..Lv Yu AK……STAY BLESSED…..!!

  • @indicine
How come Satyagraha was a flop???
You posted an article that time that it was an above average film…it collected 66crs,then how it is a flop?

  • And what are you guys crying about……Dil Chahtea Hai was a Failure………I loved the movie……So did millions…..Buh as per Box Office collections it did good collections in Handful of Metro cities…..!!

  • SRK throughout his career has worked with big banners like YRF and Dharma prod. to get success.
Also he has always worked with leading ladies like Kajol,Rani,Madhuri,Preity,PC and now Kat and DP.
He has not much worked with Shilpa,Raveena, and others.

  • @Asad Khan Nasar Its not your 3rd class group filmy funtoosh or here not any sunny max life crap sorce.so get a life. Finally,Boi takes salman as no.1 star while aamir top in overseas.Maximam websites agree about Krrish 3’s 245crores,It is an All Time Blockbuster, also blockbuster in overseas.

  • Great article i always love such articles . According to me all actors have done a great job since the past 14 years according to me Hrithik has been the dark horse because he has 10 successful films and has done only 19 films . 6 blockbusters in 14 years is a great achievement with 2 superhits and 2 hits . Since 2000 Aamir, Hrithik and Srk have given 3 highest grossing movies of the year and Salman has given 4 with No Entry . So HR is on par with all the Khans despite being 8 years younger than them and 2014 will decide who will have 4 Srk, Aamir and HR . Hats off to HR for doing limited and quality work along with Aamir because both of them has done less than 20 movies but both are class apart . HR rocks .

  • @indicine dil chahta hai is a above average film not average aamir success ratio is 80% and sharukh success ratio is 75% indicine is biased to make there fav srk no 1 they will do anything.

  • Hrithik chose some poor films like Aap mujhe achche lagne lage ,MPKDH,MDK,NTJNH..which reduced his success ratio.

  • Top actors respective years:
    2013:
    1.Aamir(D3)
    2.HR(K3)
    3.SRK(CE)

    2012:
    1.Sallu(ETT,D2)
    2.Akki(RR,HF2)
    3.HR(Agneepath)

    2011:
    1.Sallu(B’guard,Ready)
    2.SRK(Raone,don 2)
    3.Ajay(Singham)

    2010:
    1)Sallu(Dabangg)
    2)Akki (HF,TMK)
    3)SRK(MNIK)

  • srk is one actor who needs to rediscover himself……..yes he has been one of the most successfil/consistent actors but in the last 5 years he hasn’t delivered the big hits apart from CE. Not only the box office but even in terms of quailty his films havent been upto the mark……

one hopes that things would change for him with Fan and Raees which seem to be performance oriented films.

Aamir has done very few films…..but even the lesser money churners of aamir have been good quality films…..the only problem with aamir is that he does very less films…..he should do more……in his movies, mela is probably the only “Bad” film……

  • An interesting fact that JAANWAR movie of akshay kumar was ATBB in bihar circuit and even today JAANWAR is among top 10 movies in bihar circuit.

Only due to bihar circuit, jaanwar had given semi-hit or average verdict coz it outperform in that circuit, other e.g are ramleela and HDDCS of salman and aishwarya outperformed in mumbai and gujraj circuit are given hit tag.

    • @Everyone, just because a film was a cult classic, doesn’t mean it was a huge success commercially. Dil Chahta Hai was an average grosser and only worked in select few cities. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was a much bigger success in comparison, because it released during the multiplex era. A film like ZNMD wouldn’t have worked, had it released before 2006. Hera Pheri wasn’t a clean-hit either, it was an average grosser. Its sequel, Phir Hera Pheri was a super hit.

Even a film like Andaz Apna Apna, arguably the best comedy film of all time, was a box office failure.

  • Emraan Hashmi also has decent no. of successes, why not counting him.

    Murder
    Murder2
    Awaarapan
    Jannat
    Jannat2
    Raaz2
    Raaz3
    OUATIM
    The dirty picture
And some others which i have missed,so his no. of successes is more than Aamir Khan’s 9 successes.

  • This Clearly Shows Who Is The Most Consistent, Sucessfull Actor in B’Town….,,,@ Indicine U Hav Analysed Only The Period Post 2000,,, and That Too Domestic which is Obvoius cz Movies are Declared Sucess or Failure Depending On Their Domestic Collection,, But U Cant Also ignore The Overseas Collection And @ Indicine If That Comes Into Account Then We All Know Mr. Consistent Will Blow All Other Actors Far Away…. By Da Way Respect To All Actors For Entertaining Us For Decades… According To Me The Most Consistent Actor And Actually Who Can Be Termed As Superstars Are ACE KHAN and BADSHAH Khan… Also Luv RK and HR

  • If indicine ratio to 2010-2013. No.1 is SALMAN,, No.2 is Amir,, No.3 is Ranbir (because of YJHD),, No.4 is Ajay,, No.5 is Akki(because of two super hit),, No,6 is srk(because of 0 super hit). Pls note, only BB and ATBB. Thanks @INDICINE and update JAI HO collection….. best

  • @indicine how come salman gives bigger blockbuster than srk? Whenever srk does mass oriented movies it turn bigger grossers and hit than salman starrer. Oso vs partner, MSK vs Mhn. Ce vs all salman recent blockbusters. It’s only srks non masala movies slightly below par Salmans masala movies. Like ra1 125 vs bodyguard 145 but bigger grosser than ready

rectify me if I’m wrong.so losers said SRK is self proclaimed.but from every angle it seems SRK is THE KING OF BOLLYWOOD.if we clearly analyze, then non of a SRK film’s collection is with in 100cr,while see the magical numbers of last 5films of other 2self proclaimed khan.so advised to haters to take medicine in proper time, because the other 2 khans couldn’t come closer to SRK’s collection in their lifetime. That’s why MEGASTAR KING KHAN SRK is always KING.

  • @sachin11,are you kidding?if ranbir, ranveer, arjun could give hits, then what happened to salman he gave 7 back to back disasters before wanted?what happened to amir who through out th 90’s gave so huge flops.SRK have higher bbs than sallu because both VZ and MOHABBATEIN are bbs by BOI
but later it changed.so SRK is winner from all way.

billu is not added in SRK’s filmography,it is just a special appearnce you can check wikipedia, even amir says he did main role in dhobi ghat, you can also check dhobi ghat is added to amir’s lead role filmography by himselfnot special appearnace.think before you write anything.

@messy,just do a little correction, salman is the highest flop giving actor after akshay kumar.amir is the flop actor of 90’s.he did 12 films in 2012 out of which 3 are flops while SRK did 26 films while only 6 are flops.by choosing script after script also amir couldn’t make all films at least hit.while all actors of 90’s depend upon south remake except THE KING,both amir and sallu are successful at their end of career, while SRK through out the career.that’s why SRK is called THE KING OF BOLLYWOOD.got it.

  • srk has been the most consistent actor.. i mean with all the biggest directors n producers in the industry he has been delivering just ‘hit’ films.. this consistency factor is all crap.. the fact is he has failed big time.. having the best of the directors n producers in the business and giving just ‘hit’ films is just not good enough.. n who could forget the debacle called ra.one.. it was a disaster not even a flop.. ra.one’s verdict is fake

  • @shashi singh c- with all due respect to amitabh bachchan and you as well, amitabh bachchan has not delivered that much blockbusters. most of them were superhits. though he was, is and will always be the superstar of the millenium. there will be no other amitabh bachchan. he is a legend.

  • A Great Analysis :) Thanks for the effort Team :)

Just a small correction – Lakshya was “Above Average” but you have included it in failure ? Shouldn’t it be in Success as per new analysis ? This will bring lot on changes to analysis :)

    Thank You

  • @Babaji ka thullu, what’s your problem only with SRK?your comment is appropriate for amir has 25 career and he had done only 38 films, while SRK has 21 year career but had done 55 films.what’s wrong with it,no one is responsible for akshay and ajay who doesn’t care about good/bad just did every films whatever that came his way.

even many big hollywood actors also didn’t have done so much bunch of films.SRK is not feared person like amir who has flop fears that he got through out 90?s nor careless like akshay/salman who couldn’t identify good stories and do films in a random manner.only SRK did all type characters and gave genuine films and only 90?s actor who never depend on south remakes.

if you really want to know about YRF/DP,then I requested to visit the article “jai ho’s 2nd week collection”,where SRK fans cleared doubt of salmir fans.you tell the success of yrf/dp with out SRK and in return I will give you the success of SRK with out them.if you agree.lol.
