Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Movie Review

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Movie Poster

Introducing Laaga Chunari Mein Daag:

Produced by Aditya Chopra ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag – Journey of a Woman’ is the second directorial venture of Pradeep Sarkar of the critically acclaimed film Parineeta (2005) fame. Sarkar saw great success with his musical love story Parineeta, an adaptation of the 1914 Bengali novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. After a two year long hiatus he is back with yet another unique script. How far has he succeeded in describing the journey of a woman?

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Story:

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag deals with one conservative relatively poor family who live on the banks of the river Ganga in Banaras and talks mainly about the eldest girl who takes up the responsibility of protecting and supporting her family financially.

The family consists of Shivshankar Sahay (Anupam Kher) an ex-pensioner, his wife Sabitri (Jaya Bachchan) whose work on the stitching machine is the only source of income to the family and his two daughters Badki (Rani Mukherjee) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma).

Badki always gets hurt when her father keeps wishing they had a son. When dark days seem to take upon their family happiness she decides to take the stride. She soon finds herself battling in the cruel and ruthless city of Mumbai but she tackles her life with great courage. She pays the highest price in an attempt to not let the dark shadows fall on her family. Will she always lead a life full of murky compromises? What will happen if her secret life gets exposed?

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Movie Review:

Pradeep Sarkar is no doubt a proficient story teller. He has managed to bring to light the struggle of a woman to make a living in the cruel and demanding society with maturity and precision. The first half of the movie is told crisp but it gets a little dramatic in the second half. The transformation in Badki’s character evolves with time and reason. Not only that, Badki’s character is expressed in the most convincing and touching way that we tend to care deeply for her. Especially when her mom asks her not to visit home because the town would end up speaking ill of them, made me feel deeply for her. Cinematography is first-rate. The locale of Banaras is shot beautifully. Music is excellent blending well with the storyline and comes from the same team of Parineeta.

The movie has its share of negatives too. The romance between Konkona Sen Sharma and Kunal Kapoor appears forced. The second half of the movie gets over dramatic at times and gets weak on the plot line.

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Performances:

Rani Mukherjee is matchless. She delivers yet another award winning performance. Her best performance since Black. The role gives her immense scope to exhibit a gamut of emotions and she carries it out outstandingly.

Konkona Sen Sharma looks dazzling in the movie. Her performance in the movie was top-notch and is sure to fetch her good reviews and lots of praises. Jaya Bachchan is flawless. Anupam Kher is first-rate.

Kunal Kapoor as Vivaan is good. He manages to perform his act well and appears natural. Abhishek Bachchan as Rohan is just OK.

Indicine.com Laaga Chunari Mein Daag Verdict:

Overall, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is delivered effectively. At the box-office, Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa would make a dent in the LCMD collections.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

  • Its Fabulus movie. Rani’s acting is superb & amazing. This year also she deserves for all kinds of award. Story line was same story normal kinda but Rani Mukherji made it fantastic… Best movie.

  • The story of the movie is not up too the mark, Rani looks excellent in the movie as usual while kokana was also good. But because of poor story line the movie can’t work. May be because of Rani as a lead , the movie will hit

  • Nothing great about the movie.Konkana is superb, Kunal is awesome, and Rani excellent. But the sstory line is very poor and some scenes were very predictive.

  • Overall a good movie – ending is predictable but a taboo subject handled with great tact. RANI is superb! All other actos are very good as well.

  • Film is very nice. Rani is all in all of this movie. Rani’s performance is memorable, abhishek is looking again smart. Overall movie is very nice with some dots :)

  • How cld a brilliant director like Pradeep sarkar associate and devalue a known profession by associating it with high social circle escorts.

Being from the PR field and being a consultant myself it was too humiliating to be clubed as a combo offer, a package vr u get everythin on the platter from PR to escorts. The lines actually said so evidently that a PR person has to be an escort to high society people to win contracts and business.

I think a little courtesy should be shown for professions and not be put in wrong light for audience to understand.

Being in the industry for good 10 years we can’t take lying down if the word PR meant was only wine and dine and be there to do that to win that. Its more than just building relations.

We are communication specialist!!! Mind u.

  • The movie was extremely gud…rani’s acting was outstanding…..the story was known but rani’s acting was awesome………..the movie is hit……..she is not only a good actor but also a very gud human being……im a big fan of u rani……….i like ur smile and i like ur voice too……….all d best for ur upcoming movies!!!!!!!

  • But… in music part i really mis Alka yagnik’s voice for Rani… Alka can reder her voice better than sunidhi or shreya.. Alka’s voice suits for Rani better..What u guys says abt it??

  • “Shown Real life of homes where people still crave for sons and spend their lives cribbing over fate”. Such movies convey strong social messages and are just not yet another art types.

  • A movie with a perfect star-cast. It seems that the characters of the film were actually waiting fr the respective actors to play them. Rani is fanatabulous, Konkona is note worthy, Kunal is very good. The storyline of the movie is nothing new, but Pradip Sarkar have stressed on the common human values and emotions which touches our inner-selfves.

  • I thought this film was excellent, the scenery and songs worked well together bringing together the whole feel of the film

Rani Mukherjee gave an excellent performance along side Jaya Bhachan. All actors and actresses worked well together. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

  • Finally Bollywood attempted to write a good story especially regarding high profile escorts which has been prevalent in india but has been a hush hush matter. I give sarkar kudos for touching very sensitive areas of life. Rani & konkona acted very well . The second half of the movie turned out to be stale & unrealistic.
“Abishek Bachan” for gods sake need to get his act together. Is that called acting or just casual attitude. Boy he can’t act. Shah ruk would have done justice to that role

  • i think the actors were brilliant in their individual capacity, however more realistic performance could have been extracted from Konkana & Abhishek. the plot, however did tend to become melodramatic & predictable at times, as compaerd to the first half which was brilliant.
coming to the second half, Mr Sarkar seems to have mixed up between a PR professional & an escort
& also do trainees get such a lot of attention in ad firms from top shots like the creative head???? that part should have had better lines etc not the typical hindi masala movies, particularly konkana, keeping in mind the rest of the film’s “reality bites”. however it was a grt relief to see Kunal Kapoor in a role where he had more scope for talking.

  • The last scenes of the movie ruined the whole movie! If the director who did a wonderful movie like Parineeta thought correctly wouldn’t end the movie this way, it was a disaster! As if he wanted to tell all men and families: accept a prostitute to be a member in your family! accept a prostitute woman to be your wife!! OK, a man would fall for a prostitute after sleeping with her and give him pleasure and if she want to live a clean and a decent life, and based on a big love story and desire a man would sacrifice and accept the woman, but Abhishek didn’t live a big and strong love story with Rani in the movie. He just admired her!
Life of a woman who is a prostitute is very hard. I can’t forget Shabana Azmi’s movie (Bahavna) one of her best movies and how she portrayed a prostitute in the film, how much she suffered, how much she sacrificed, how much she paid for the sake of her son’s career.
Can’t compare this movie with Bahavna. I’d like to suggest to directors to do a remake of Bahavna for the new generation.

  • i agree wid Sheeba completely. Bachchan Jr needs serious acting lessons.why does he not learn something from his gifted parents’ acting skills?? tho he seemed to have a very promising career after we saw him in refugee & i as a viewer had high hopes from him n despite one flop after another i held on to the belief that like his dad he will finally emerge as a good actor after a series of flops. but now after all this patronage n promotion from his father (for guru), n failure to deliver on his part, i’ve completely given up on it.
