Kochadaiyaan Box Office Opening: Rajnikanth film

Tamil superstar Rajnikanth’s ambitious ‘photo-realistic motion capture’ film Kochadaiyaan, released in theatres worldwide today.

In most parts of the country, the part animated film had to compete against Hindi film Heropanti and Hollywood release X-MEN: Days Of Future Past. In Andhra Pradesh, legendary late actor Nageswara Rao’s last film co-starring his son Nagarjuna released in theatres.

But in Tamilnadu and neighbouring states like Karnataka and Kerala, it was Kochadaiyaan all the way as the film took a earth-shattering start at almost every centre in Tamilnadu.

The expectations weren’t as huge as a normal Rajnikanth film, but the opening of Kochadaiyaan has exceeded all expectations. If the film performs well in the long run and manages to recover its costs, the animation industry in India and also the ‘Photorealistic Performance Capture technology’ which has evolved greatly in the last 10 years or so, will get a huge boost.

Reports suggest that Kochadaiyaan has been made on a budget of Rs 125 crore. The Tamilnadu government has exempted the film of ‘entertainment tax’ which is usually around 15% for new films. Since 2006, films that aim to promote Tamil culture and language have received tax exemption.

It remains to be seen what sort of box office collections Kochadaiyaan can notch up on its opening day, but the overall fan-fare that the film has received, once again proves that, when it comes to star power and craze, Tamil superstar Rajnikanth is in a league of his own.
