Khatta Meetha Movie Review

Akshay Kumar returns with yet another comedy titled Khatta Meetha, once again with Priyadarshan who has previously directed him in immensely successful films like Hera Pheri, Garam Masala and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. The film also stars Trisha, a hugely successful actress from down south.

Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) is a failed road construction contractor. Financially he is always into a mess and when he tries to involve into corruption, the mess only increases. Things get worse when Gehna Ganpule (Trisha), his ex-girlfriend is the new Municipal Commissioner.

First the negatives

  • Content-wise Khatta Meetha simply disappoints. It has its moments, but if you go in expecting a rib-tickling entertainer, you’ll walk out feeling cheated. The best comic sequences were all a part of those television trailers.
  • The second drags on unnecessarily with over-stretched sequences. The complete lack of a story line makes it a painful watch. The runtime (160 mins+) is simply unacceptable for a film like Khatta Meetha.
  • The love angle just doesn’t work and the innumerable song and dance numbers get irritating after a point.
  • Priyadarshan disappoints yet again after De Dana Dan, he indulges  into way too many things and the result is a confused film.
  • Apart from Akshay – Johnny Lever and Asrani, the performances are below average. Especially Trisha, who just doesn’t get her act right.

Positives

  • The first half is good and has several funny scenes to keep you hooked especially those that involve Asrani and Rajpal Yadav.
  • The music by Pritam is good and the one-liners (dialogues) are funny.

Performances (in order)

  • Akshay Kumar is brilliant. Even though he has appeared in several comedy films over the last decade or so, there is a certain freshness in his expressions and body language.
  • Trisha disappoints big time. In a role made for someone like Sushmita Sen, Trisha apart from looking good, gets nothing right.
  • Rajpal Yadav – Johnny Level – Asrani are very good. Makrand Deshpande, Tinu Anand, Urvashi Sharma are wasted. The rest are too loud.

Overall, Khatta Meetha has a good first half but the more important second is a terrible let-down. At the box office, the film is expected to open to good numbers and with the costs being comparatively lower than some of Akshay’s previous films, Khatta Meetha should do reasonably good business. The word of mouth though, which is already mixed to negative, should affect its collections from Monday.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆
