Karan Johar’s Birthday Bash – All the details!

Karan Johar’s 40th birthday party was the kind of event that people will be talking about years after it took place. Every imaginable B-town celebrity, big or small, showed up at the party, to support Kjo. Like they say, the industry that parties together, stays together!

At 9:30PM : In Bollywood, being fashionably late is a party norm and none of the invitees would even think of turning up this early. Only friend Manish Malhotra, who incidently was also the designer for the evening, arrived earliest as he orchestrated the theme of the party which was ‘red and black’.

At 9:42PM : Birthday boy Karan Johar came out from the venue to meet and greet the eager paparazzi waiting outside, looking dapper in a suit, designed by Tom Ford.

At 9:55PM : Karan’s biggest confidante and support, his mother Hiroo was one of the early few to grace the party with her presence.

At 10:10PM : Blockbuster producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra was one of the earliest to arrive and the earliest to leave. Got somewhere else to be, Mr Chopra?

At 10:40PM : Dharma Production’s proteges Punit Malhotra and Niranjan Iyengar, walked the red carpet at a reasonably early time for the big bash. How quirky is Punit’s blue bow tie!

At 10:45PM : Industrialist Anil Ambani arrived with wife Tina at around the same time that, actor and activist Rahul Bose walked the red carpet.

At 10:51PM : The immensely modest Sooraj Barjatya, choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant and director Rohan Sippy arrived at almost the same time. Talk about perfect timing!

At 11:04PM : One of Kjo’s closest friends, Kajol arrived wearing a gown with ruched sheer detailing which surprised us to no end, considering Kajol’s hatred towards dressing up. She looked gorgeous and was accompanied by little sister Tanisha. Right behind them, crooner Ali Zafar zoomed in with wife. Looks like’s he’s back from the debacle that was London-Paris-New York.

At 11:06PM : Zayed Khan walked in with sister Farah Khan Ali, who was all glammed up in a long red flowing gown. Shashi Tharoor’s wife Tilottama Mukherji followed right after. Actor Imran Khan, clearly one of the best dressed of the event in a white tuxedo, made an appearance along with wifey Avantika. Others who also graced the red carpet with their presence were magnum opus director Ashutosh Gowarikar with his wife, lyricist Javed Akhtar and wife Shabana Azmi.

At 11:18PM : The newest aunt in town, Shamita Shetty made up for elder sister Shilpa’s absence and arrived at the party. A few minutes later, the youngest of the Khan siblings, Arpita showed up sans elder brother Salman. It’s nice to see younger siblings making up for their elder’s absence.

At 11:24PM : Anupam Kher and his entire family showed up to party with Karan. Sophie, arrived looking radiant in a deep neck V gown, teaming it up with some Chopard jewels. Such a wonderful appearance! Actor Juhi Chawla was one of the few who chose to wear an Indian outfit, looked pretty as always. Randeep Hooda arrived with a new haircut in tow and hostess and show anchor Simi Garewal graced the party right after.

At 11:31PM : Anil Kapoor entered with his entire family, except Sonam Kapoor, who is busy at Cannes. Though Anil and wife Sunita arrived in separate cars, they did come back to back within 2 minutes of each other. I wish Anil had heard of carpooling, saves up a lot of petrol. Actor Urmila Martondkar, director Yash Chopra and actress Neelam all walked the red carpet at around the same time.

At 11:40PM : Malaika Arora Khan arrived with sister Amrita and hottie Malaika looked ravishing in a gown with a plunging neckline. Hot stuff, this! Actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor arrived sans son Ranbir, who’s shooting at an outdoor location. Soha Ali Khan, accompanied by boyfriend Kunal Khemu also walked in at around the same time. Just a few minutes after, the recently hitched Deshmukh brothers arrived in their respective cars with their respective wives. Genelia looked gorgeous in a blue gown with an asymmetrical hemline and spoke fluently in marathi, much to the delight of the reporters.

At 11:43PM : Bipasha chose to keep it long this time, in a black gown with a huge V cut on the back. Love how she looked! Clearly, one of her best appearances. Newbie Sonakshi arrived, looking beautiful, shortly after in a drape neck gown that had a lace detail at the waist.

At 11:46PM : Suneil Shetty arrived with wife Mana, at the same time, that actress Nargis walked the red carpet.

At 11:50PM : The besties club in Bollywood, comprising of designer Anna Singh, Seema Khan and a few others arrived together to wish Karan.

At 11:51PM : Actress Anushka Sharma walked in, a minute later and Raveena Tandon followed suit. How much do you love Anushka’s pant-suit combo with the red lips? Raveena met Asin at the gate and they entered the party together. Signs of bonding, perhaps?

At 11:56PM : Shahrukh Khan finally arrived a few minutes before midnight with wife Gauri, who was all decked up in a red party gown. The power couple looked fantastic together. Just minutes later, Sanjay Dutt arrived with his entire family.

At 12:01AM : Kareena and Karishma Kapoor walked in together. Bebo donned a short Aztec printed dress and looked super cute. It was nice to see her wearing something other than long boring gowns.

At 12:02AM : Hrithik Roshan along with wife Sussane and actors Preity Zinta and Fardeen Khan, all walked in together on the red carpet.

At 12:10AM : Jaya Bachchan arrived with Rinkie Khanna, younger daughter of yesteryear superstar Rajesh Khanna. A few minutes later, Shahid Kapoor arrived looking dashing with a bow tie. Love to see him all suited up. Director Rohit Shetty also walked in at the same time.

At 12:13AM : Actor Akshay Kumar arrived with his ‘Housefull 2’ director Sajid Khan. Planning Houseful 3, perhaps?

At 12:14AM : Fresh off her appearance at Cannes, actress Kalki Koechlin walked in for the party. Neha Dhupia arrived with her mystery man at the same time.

At 12:17AM : Aamir Khan came in with wife Kiran, who was decked up elegantly in a gorgeous saree and producer Ekta Kapoor walked in with her entire family at the same time. Akshay Kumar, the only actor who wasn’t dressed up in formals, left a few minutes after his arrival and co-star Sonakshi Sinha left exactly a few seconds later. Looks like they were devising promotional strategies for their new movie together.

At 12:32AM : Uday Chopra arrived with YRF’s blue eyed girl Parineeti Chopra, who looked adorable in a blue metallic gown. Only wish is that she had toned down on the makeup.

At 12:43AM : Kjo’s bestie Rani Mukherjee arrived, in a satin gown which we wish fit her better. However, waist up, she looked fabulous.

At 12:50AM : Putting to rest all rumors of a tiff between her and the host, Priyanka Chopra graced the red carpet in a mesh overlay gown, with her hair swept up in a bun and minimal makeup. PC was the last one to arrive, but looks like she made the maximum impact.
