Jazbaa Movie Review

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who last appeared in a movie 5 years back is back in Bollywood with Jazbaa, being directed by Sanjay Gupta. The trailers have promised green mayhem on screens with the scenes being shot with an atypical tint of green. But does the film rise from such weird decisions? Is it a solid thriller at the end of the day? And how is Aishwarya in the movie? Let’s dissect.

Story: Anuradha Verma (Aish) is a topshot lawyer in Mumbai who lives with her daughter Sanaaya. She gets justice for a rape victim by getting the rape accused Miyaz (Chandan Roy Sanyal) sentenced to death. But then her daughter gets kidnapped and she is blackmailed into fighting the case for Miyaz to get him out of jail. In comes Yohan Parmar (Irrfan) who is a childhood friend of Anuradha’s and is there to help Anuradha out in such a tricky situation. Will she be able to get her daughter back without letting a rapist go free? That’s for you to discover!

Screenplay and Direction: First things first, Jazbaa is an official remake of the Korean hit Seven Days. It follows the template of that Korean film to the tee but thankfully for the owners not many people would have seen the Korean original. The best thing about the movie is the speed at which the story movies. Jazbaa keeps flowing like a fast paced thriller and stays at it throughout the duration of the movie. Sanjay Gupta doesn’t believe in subtlety and keeps everything at a high pitched octane. But that is a double edged sword because you have to get your mind into that frame of mind to like such movies.

Jazbaa Movie Review

Miscellaneous and Music: Technically, everything about Jazbaa is superseded by the dramatic tones the cinematographer shoots the film in. Jazbaa is either heavily green or heavily blue or heavily white. It is not the most pleasurable color palette. The costume design is alright. The background score is mainly one tone and doesn’t keep things subtle by any means. It is ear drums-tearing stuff!

Acting: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan makes a competent and sincere return to Hindi cinema with Jazbaa. She oozes confidence and sincerely in every scene. Sadly, you can’t help but feel that she deserved a better subject for her comeback project and as everything feels uneasy in the movie. The dialogues delivered by Yohan is betrayed by the subtlety of Irrfan’s expressions. Irrfan makes an effort to play his character two levels lower than he was probably required to. Shabana Azmi is good but hams it up a bit as the rape victim Sia’s mother. Jackky Shroff is good as the politician with grey shades.

Conclusion: Jazbaa works as a solid, taut, fast paced thriller with its own quirks like green frames and overblown dialogues. Aishwariya Rai Bachchan makes a sincere comeback to movies and does incredibly well to supersede the material she is made to work with. If you are in the mood to not rack your brains too much and yet enjoy a good thriller, then Jazbaa is the right choice for you this weekend. It is appropriate counterprogramming to another one of Irrfan’s films Talvaar which released last week. Give Jazbaa a watch and make the decision for yourself.

Pros:

  • Aishwariya makes a sincere return to Hindi cinema
  • Irrfan downplays his part appropriately
  • The movie is fast paced and the pace never drops off
  • The acting is also deft

Cons:

  • The green/blue frames of the movie
  • The scene by scene remake aspect makes it lose some of its credibility
  • The nonexistence of any subtlety in the universe of Jazbaa
  • The loud background score

Rating: ★★★☆☆

  • Just finished watching Bombay Velvet. While first half was confusing, Movie was too good in second half. These types of movies are not made for India. That is why it being considered even after getting horrible reviews for a New York Museum celebrating great films of Bollywood. End reminded me of Scarface.. Ranbir like always has chosen good script(Including Roy) except for Besharam…Hope everyone sees it at least once on DVD.. 8/10 Not everyday you get these types of films.

  • expecting jazbaa to be a hit as reviews are good…
if it will be it would be 3rd hit in a row(talwar doin decent business too) for irrfan khan beside the ultimate blockbuster jurassic world

  • How can lack of originality listed among cons for a film? ??
u didn’t do the same for remakes like gabbar ready holiday so y only list it as a con for jazbaa and drishyam

  • Jazba is a must watch movie it will be sure a Hit for Aish Ma’am.

And I hope that Singh Is Bling will get good response again in its 2nd week and Singh Is Bling will become a Hit with 100 crore + collections.

  • If credibility is a parameter to judge a film half of Bhai movies shouldn’t have been hits since they too are shameless remakes of South movies

  • @safiul That means only 2cr on 2nd friday
    weekend will be 9-10cr
