Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Movie Review

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na marks the acting debut of Aamir Khan’s nephew Imraan Khan. Abbas Tyrewala of Munnabhai M.B.B.S and Main Hoon Na fame (as a writer) has scripted and directed this fun flick mainly targetted at the youth. This is also the first movie from Aamir Khan productions to not feature the superstar himself. But any product that Aamir lends his name to, is keenly anticipated and be rest assured, high on quality. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is no exception!

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is about Jai Singh Rathore a.k.a Rats (Imraan Khan), a Rajput who doesnt believe in violence and Aditi Mahant a.k.a Meow (Genelia D’Souza), a cute and violent girl. Aditi feels Jai is a big coward and Jai says her parents should have rinsed her mouth with soap! They fight like crazy but just cant live without each other. They are almost a made for each other couple, their parents know this, friends know it, but they believe they are just great friends, no more, no less. Does friendship turn into love?

Jane Tu Ya Jane Na Review

Whatever Aamir Khan touches seems to be turning into gold. First Lagaan, then Taare Zameen Par and now Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, although not in the same league, is yet another classic from Aamir Khan productions. What works for Jaane Tu is the well etched characters, performed brilliantly by the actors. Its not just the main characters, but even the supporting characters that add a lot of value to Jaane Tu.

Director Abbas Tyrewala has executed the script with brilliance. The first half is almost flawless, a simple tale of friendship and love, that either makes you smile or laugh. The second half, could have been better.. it tends to drag a tad bit at times and gets predictable when Genelia is engaged. The writer should have opted for a different climax and made it slightly more believable. The dialogues are witty, hilarious at times and brilliant. The music by A.R. Rehman is perfect for the movie. “Pappu cant dance saala” and “Kabhi Kabhi” stand out.

Scenes that stand out in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

  • Aditi’s parents and Jai’s discussion on the engagement. Funny!
  • Aditi wonders how the 5 years passed by. “On the phone beta” says Jai’s mom.
  • Scene between Amit and Aditi, his confession. Heart warming and brilliant!
  • Aditi begins to realise her love for Jai only when Manjari Phadnis enters the scene. The jealousy, sadness and regret is executed and performed perfectly.
  • When Amit takes Aditi into his room.
  • Scenes between Jai’s mother and his dead father (he talks from a portrait). Hilarious!
  • The chemistry between the gang of 6 friends.
  • Honestly I didnt like the climax, but the performance by Genelia and Imraan, when surrounded by the cops, makes an impact.

I can just go on and on, great moments make a great movie and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na has simply fantastic moments in abundance.

Coming to the performances, Imraan Khan reminded me a lot of Aamir Khan, especially the mischievious grin. Imraan overall makes a solid debut, not once does he go over the top. A good restrained performance, this actor will surely go a long way. Genelia D’Souza’s expressions alone are worth the price of the ticket. She oozes cuteness and performs well. Manjari Phadnis looks good, acts well. Ratna Pathak Shah is superb as always. Paresh Rawal makes you laugh a couple of times. Naseeruddin Shah in a short role is just perfect. The director has managed to extract excellent performances from every other character actor.

Overall, Jaane Tu is immensely enjoyable and high on entertainment. If your looking for a movie on friendship and love, that makes you smile and laugh at times. Dont miss it! At the box-office, the lacklustre performance of Love Story 2050 along with good word out mouth should ensure a HIT status atleast!

Rating: ★★★★☆

From nowon.. I’ll never rely on your reviews indicine.com or the review of any other websites. It was a bad, boring movie. The only good thing in the movie was 2 songs and introducing (Amit) Smita Patel’s son, he was an interesting guy in the movie. And.. what gold?! This time Aamir did a steel movie, not a gold!!
I can’t compare TZP & Lagaan with this movie which is below average, a poor movie. I’ts good for teenagers only, the script, the direction, nothing was interesting. The girl Aditi wasn’t bad and Emraan too, but they didn’t have a strong presence on screen only (Amit). And.. no one knows, might be Love Story 2050 a good movie, means vice versa. The movie which you praised is a bad one, and the movie which you gave one star, probably is a good one. I will decide after watching it next week as it’s not yet released in our country Bahrain.

In addition to my earlier comments, and for whoever watched the movie, didn’t u notice the following:
1) The group gathering at the airport and tell a story (in details) to their friend doesn’t happen in real life, but in Hindi movies only!!
2) No point for the following scenes :
a) A guy riding a horse in the desert
b) Naseerudin Shah is alive in the portrait. ( the wife wasn’t imagining, but saw him talking and moving!!)
c) Arbaaz & Suhail Khan’s apperance, no point at all
d) When a rocking music starts, while aditi is blowdrying her hair, make u think it’s a starting of an interesting song, then it stops, and the scene changes!!
e) The last airport scene, where the boy is after the girl, want to stop her get in the plane ( a repeated scene which we so 20 times in different indian movies).

So.. dear all, what’s so good about this movie?!! The comedy, only a few scenes where a bit funny and not (very) funny Om Shanti Om which I didn’t like much and got bored in the 1st half was a better movie than this one. I’ll rate it with one star only.

I hope that Aamir Khan’s Gajini would be a good one.

Fathiya, we have been reading your comments on almost every reviews of ours. So we owe you a explaination for being a regular reader.

First of all, as mentioned in the Love Story 2050 Review comment, Not all reviews can be universally accepted. Movies that are universally excepted like Taare Zameen Par, Jodha Akbar, Chak De India are very rare and there could probably be 2 or 3 (at max) such movies every year. Even those movies were criticized by a few!

Coming to those points mentioned by you.

1) Very few movies are absolutely realistic.. Cinema is great, because of the cinematic liberties that a filmmaker can take. Jaane Tu is a fun movie.. trying to find logic in every scene doesnt make sense for a movie of this genre.

2 a) A guy riding a horse in a desert, is Imraan’s dream in the movie. Dreams are wild and often unrealistic, dont you think?

2 b) Its a fun element in the movie, which was enjoyed by almost everyone in the theatre. In the 90s there was a serial called Hum Paanch which was extremely popular and one of the top most comedy serials those days. It had a similar concept, the movie was popular for the character who talks in the portrait. Again its a fun element, for the viewers to enjoy.

2 c) Arbaaz and Sohail’s track was unnecessary, i agree, especially the scene jail scene wasnt very impressive.

2 d) A song there would have just been unnecessary.

2 e) As i mentioned above in the review, i wasnt very impressed by the ending as the particular scene has been done to death in so many movies in the past. It should ideally have been different. But what we liked about it was the way it was performed by Imraan and the energy level of Genelia and also her expressions. Also the way the inspector was repeating their words was hilarious and bought the house down!

So whats good about the movie? The concept, its got a Dil Chahta Hai feel to it, but doesnt go too deep into relationships.. Its more fun, refreshing, like it is in those good old college / school days. Its a feel good entertainer. Also each character in the movie was absolutely perfect and you could easily releate to them.

All in all, the poll above says it all.. 879 off the total 996 who have voted, have loved the movie!

So we would like to believe, we have succeeded in giving out a good review that has been accepted by the majority :)

Thanks for your comments, we appreciate healthy criticism.

Thank you

Indicine Team: Thanks for your reply, but no.. you can’t compare Dil Chahta hai with this movie. Dil Chahta hai was one of best indian romantic comedy which I saw and enjoyed every part of it, it’s one of my favourite movies which I still watch and watched it 5 times since the release date, it was a quality movie. Believe me if I say that I went to the theatre yesterday and was very enthusiastic and expected to see a good movie and enjoy it. When the movie started, and after 5 minutes only I had a feeling that I might be dissapointed, the movie doesn’t sound good as I’m expecting ( we can feel the good movie from the way it starts, can’t we?) as the direction is everything, the direction was poor with the cast of the movie. so.. I got bored, fallen a bit asleep ( this exactly happened to me while watching “Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic”
Dear Indicine Team:
Some people find some scenes very funny and some don’t. Jaane Tu, Hangama, Rang De Basanti, these movies millions of people found them very good but maybe I’m with some other audiences are exclusion!

Indicine Team:  (July 7, 2008 at 9:51 am)

Dil Chahta Hai is a classic, agreed. Am not comparing the 2 movies. All that i am saying is, Jaane Tu has a DCH kinda feel to it.

Dil Chahta Hai is a bit more serious, as it involved 3 grown up friends and not a gang of friends from college (15 – 18 year olds)… it concentrated on all 3 lead characters, whereas Jaane Tu is more about Rats and Meow.

Jaane Tu has taken a lot of cinematic liberties, its a refreshing masala film which should not be taken very seriously. Just go there.. enjoy the performances, dialogues and the light moments..

Regarding RDB, its a flawless movie. Hungama was good mainly because of Paresh Rawal.. Jaane Tu will be a movie that will bag many Best Debut awards for Imraan Khan, will work big time at the box office and will be remembered few years down the line!

Fathiya, your entitled to your opinion, appreciate your comments.

The movie was bang on! I guess movies like this are just for fun and expecting tragic realities of life or some absolute truths from such films would be a flaw as some are committing here. Want A light hearted movie to freshen up your life a bit ? Its one such brilliant piece of film and one of the best i’ve ever seen. Cant watch a flick without burnin too much brain sugar? Trust me! Only Serious cinema is your business. I dont believe in an autopsy . Just think i liked it a great deal. Casting is impeccable and dialogues are ok and really hilarious at times. The atmosphere is great. Music is good. Everybody acted nicely. Yes you’re right, movie has a DIL CHAHTA HAi feel to it and that could have been intensified by a good end and doing away with unnecessary humour where the movie missed out a bit in the later part . But nobody’s perfect and i aint let down.
