Let me start off by saying, Shahrukh Khan hasn’t really been at the top of his games since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which released more than 3 and a half years ago.
- He has not delivered a single blockbuster since 2009.
- None of his films have crossed the 120 crore mark in the domestic market, despite all of his films (except My Name Is Khan) releasing during the Holiday season.
- Back in his prime, the quality of his films were way better than what it is today. Post Rab Ne.., none of his films have sustained at the box office for more than 2 or 3 weeks.
Let us analyze:
Shahrukh Khan Movies
My Name Is Khan (2010): This was probably the most awaited film of 2009 and many were expecting it to cross 100 crore, as Aamir Khan’s last two releases had done 116 crore (Ghajini) and 202 crores (3 Idiots). It took a good opening and was critically acclaimed too, in fact the Karan Johar film was one of the best reviewed movies of 2010. However, this film crashed in the second week and ended with lifetime collections of Rs 74 Crore. Even Akshay Kumar, who was going through a rough patch, was able to deliver a solid-hit when Housefull grossed 75 crore during the IPL season.
Verdict: HIT
Ra.One: Like most SRK movies, this too was one of the most awaited flicks of the year. Due to the sheer amount of money spent. the hype behind it and the 5 day extended Diwali weekend; the trade was expecting this to cross 200 crore. Ra One opened well, it’s second day after release was a record for the highest single day collections (surpassed later by Ek Tha Tiger). But unfortunately, the film crashed after a week due to mixed/negative word of mouth. This film DID NOT CROSS 120 CRORE if you exclude regional collections.
Verdict: Above Average to HIT (some say the film has lost several crores)
Don 2: SRK’s first Christmas release took a good opening, although the trade expected the opening to be a lot higher. The film sustained for 2 and half weeks, did well at multiplexes but was a non-starter at single screens. However, its overall collections was once again below expectations as the film collected Rs 112 crore.
Verdict: Hit
Jab Tak Hai Jaan: SRK, Katrina, Yash Chopra, A.R. Rahman — it could not have gotten bigger or better. But who would have expected that the collections after the initial weekend would be on the same level as Son Of Sardar, even though the Ajay Devgan starrer released on fewer screens? Like every other SRK film, this too got good reviews, but 106 (BOI) or 120 (official) whichever figure you take, it was still below the mark.
Verdict: HIT
Chennai Express: This year SRK takes Salman’s EID slot. But he has a bigger challenge on his hands, as Akshay Kumar’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Again is also slated to release on the same day (August 8th). If both films have the same number of screens, then OUATIM 2 might just take a better opening as it’s the sequel to one of 2010’s most loved films and has great recall value too.
That brings me to the big question – Is Shahrukh Khan the ‘numero uno superstar’ that he once was between 1995 – 2009? Is his star power on the wane?

Well srk was never as popular as Salman & Govinda in the 90’s. srk’s films collections are manipulated. Even ra1 was declared a hit even though it was a loss making project.90’s belonged to Salman. 2000s belonged to Aamir & Hrithik. & now once again it’s Salmania everywhere. I don’t think srk was ever a numero uno Superstar !! Salman has always been more loved & adored on a personal level. Guess what, it’s srk’s arrogance nature which is backfiring him. But still i think he will back as he is very good at manipulation. So even if his films fail in future, still he’ll get a HIT status. Just the way MNIK was given a Hit status even though it performed dismally at the domestic market & so many distribytors & sub distributors lost their money which the makers later compensated.
Shahrukh was NOT the numero uno during 1995-2009.
During 1995-99, Srk ruled but Aamir & Salman were very close to him.
And 2000 onwards, the position was shared between Hrithik, Akshay, Aamir & Srk. and since 2010, Salman is unanimously the no.1 star.
So, its wrong to say that he was the No.1 star during that phase. Also his star-power is declining with every next film of his.

Quite a stupid article… Even though I dont like srk’s acting much,, but the fact is he took risks and tried different genres in the last few years unlike others who did the usual formula masala films. That is definitely praise worthy.. And I feel These risky films did quite a good business.
I dont think so !! He has done movies which r not the hot genre post rab ne bana di jodi. He has done almost al genre except masala and comedy. That is the reason films did not do better. Jab tak hai jaan did 120cr despite clash with masala movie, do u think its poor? (Assuming dabang2 did 155cr with 3500 screens and 3 open weeks) . Even aamir’s talash didnt even touch 100cr becoz that was an off genre movie. None of akshay’s last 3-4 movies did 80+cr. Srk has given 3 consequetive 100+cr movies. No other actor except salman has done that. Nly salman has out done him.
Come d day ce releases. Then make any conclusion. And yes, his stardom is ever increasing..u have to be neutral and unbiased to experience where he lies in fan’s hearts! U will b amaged, i promise u :)

And since 2008, he’s not even close to the big khans (Salman, Aamir & Saif), Hrithik, Akshay, Ajay, Ranbir, Imran & Emraan. All the actors mentions have given Blockbusters & superhits but Srk has failed to do so.
Firstly Shah Rukh is Not No 1 .That position is with Salman Khan for quite some time now. SRK is only hit overseas .That too is not at the same level as before.Salman who was considered hero of the masses & Single screens has proved that he is No 1 of classes also. Ek Tha Tiger proved that.
salman has become the Darling of masses & Classes. His presence only now gets a huge opening.If salman comes with a super duper script, i wonder what will happen to the Box Office.
Another factor is unlike salman, SRK Now looks odd doing romantic roles with Heroines half his age. He should do roles that suit him & not try to copy others to remain in the race.
He should’ve gracefully retired during 2009-10, but now its too late for him to retire *gracefully*. he’s nowhere in the top 5 at the present.
Star power on the wane?
His last 3 films crossed 100 crores. Easily.
His last 4 films have all crossed 200 crores worldwide. Easily.
If still his star power is on the decline then it just show the high standards that he has set over the years. SRK will be back. Watch out. Chennai Express and Happy New Year are commercial entertainers will universal appeal.

Does this guy understand the word STAR POWER….??? SRK got his 4 mediocre films to a HIT STATUS….thats star power…….Mediocre films of Aamir Akshay Ajay dont even hit 90cr.
and its cause people like him who say “QUATIM will open better than C.E that too on EID” made me leave.. anyone with slightest knowledge will know that.. a serious film vs an entertainer on EID is a one side battle its not even that QUATIM part 1 was a big hit it did a mediocre 58cr….. same as vidya balan’s kahaani
sharukh’s above listed all films had crosses 200 crore worldwide. Nowadays films are made on high budget coz bollywood movies do excellent business in overeas too. My name is Khan is made on 40 crore budget eyeing on overseas business too not just indian business and films did more than 100 crore overseas and 74 crore in india. film made 174 crore on the budget of 40 crores and still it has been called just hit. Like that all of his film mad huge profit. Even ra 1 would had been made on lesser budget if bollywood films doesn’t have overseas market. So my point is films boxoffice collection shud not be divided by overseas and indian collection specially while deciding a verdict.

Well there shouldnt even be an iota of doubt about the so called ‘global superstar with 3.9876543210 billion fans’ stardom being on a steady & continuous decline from the past 3 years. Yes it is true that his last 4 movies have grossed 200+ crores worldwide but it is also very much true that the domestic collections of his movies has been far from satisfactory and more than any thing else his fan following in india has been decreasingly rapidly (and not to forget the fact that he is the most hated actor in bollywood right now & more than 80% of the bollywood industry doesnt like him GENUINELY).
The major reason for his last 4 movies doing such worldwide business is because of their efficient & structured distribution by the major production houses and except for mnik, the other 3 movies released on major festival holidays but still couldnt net more than 125 crores in india (such a shame for a superstar).
srk was always a genre-specific actor (romantic) but now he has become too old to play the romantic roles and he isn’t appropriate for any other non-romantic genres like action,comedy,family, thrillers etc (though he did some films in these genres and even some were successful, he was never really taken seriously as a non-romantic actor).
It will not be an aberration to say that srk is right now a pale shadow of his own stardom and is in the twilight of his career and we shouldnt be suprised if he retires after 4-5 years from the bollywood. So It is better for srk to retire from bollywood as early as possible
@ mr.imam.for ur kind information only 3 million $ difference in overseas collection between JTHJ and Dabaang 2. Forget about domestic boxoffice.u c there is no comparision to salman star power just visit to boxofficeindia.com they states that only 2 or 3 star have seen the success like him before. and for everyone information that yashraj got 2700 screens for JTHJ only becoz of Ek Tha Tiger though distributors were not happy for JTHJ as SOS was predicted to do better bussiness and it did so.
