IndicineLBO Update: Badrinath Ki Dulhania awaited, Jagga Jasoos pushed again

Note: IndicineLBO Update will be published every Tuesday.

The period between ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ has been extremely dull for the industry. ‘Rangoon’ sank without a trace and ‘Commando 2’ will also end up losing some of its investment.

It’s time to look ahead to the next few releases..

Badrinath Ki Dulhania (BKD): March is usually a dull period for the industry, but this week’s release featuring two of the most established young stars in the industry, has the potential to set the cash registers ringing.  The industry is confident that the Varun-Alia starrer can surprise and a 90 crore plus total will be well within reach if it opens well. The negatives will be the exam period, the impact of which is extremely difficult to judge. However, unlike most other Dharma films in recent times, BKD reaches out to a larger section of the audience – so if the film does manage to find acceptance, it has the potential to be the much-needed ‘runaway hit’ at the box office, something that every other film this year has failed to do. The added box office interest is to see if Varun Dhawan can continue his winning streak. There’s Alia Bhatt too who was phenomenal in 2016, her presence is certain to give the film a big boost too.

Machine: Abbas-Mustan return with yet another action-love-thriller, in a film that marks the debut of Abbas’ son Mustafa. And even though Salman has quoted the ‘Don’t worry Mustafa..’ song, there’s plenty of reason for Mustafa to worry because the trailer hasn’t really generated wide-spread interest. It’s word-of-mouth dependent and unlike in olden times when films had space to grow, the audience isn’t even giving the ‘routine’ films a chance. If ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ finds acceptance, it could pretty much eat this film up. The only hope is if Mustafa surprises and the film – with the stunning Kiara Advani – turns out to be a good one. The starting level isn’t going to be high (we expect it to fall below 3 crore), which means it needs to show big growth over the weekend and probably collect more than Friday on Monday! Difficult.

Phillauri: The trailer generated quite a bit of interest, but since then, it’s been downhill for the Anushka Sharma starrer. It’s again one of those word-of-mouth films. Anushka is a top star and Diljit Singh is a superstar in Punjab, but it isn’t the sort of film that appeals to their respective fan-bases. Excellent reviews from the critics and then the push that some films get through social media (Pink, Piku etc) is going to be important.

Naam Shabana: Akshay Kumar’s Baby opened poorly at the box office, so the extension to that film which doesn’t even feature the superstar in the lead – is unlikely to get a big initial. It doesn’t have the credibility of a director like Neeraj Pandey either, but the promos have received a fairly good response. Content is going to be the key, we say that for almost every film, but it’s a lot more important for films that do not get an initial as compared to those that do.

Sarkar 3: If there’s one director in the industry who can really get the ‘dark thriller’ genre right (i.e entertaining and commercially successful), it has to be Ram Gopal Varma.  He’s the master of gangster films too, but the biggest cause of concern is his form. A in-form RGV can deliver a brilliant film, but when he isn’t he can go horribly wrong. ‘Sarkar’ is his biggest franchise, it has a strong-cast led by the legendary Bachchan. The trailer has been received well too. We expect the film to cross the 50 crore mark, a excellent film can take this over 70.

The above films are important for the Hindi film industry, especially the bigger ones like ‘Badrinath..’ and ‘Sarkar 3’. If these two films work along with a couple of others, the Hindi industry will have something to show in the first 3 months before films like ‘Fast and Furious 8’ and ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ hit theatres.

Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos has been delayed yet again and it isn’t even complete yet with reshoots taking place recently. There’s been news that the Ranbir-Katrina starrer has been pushed to July, but there’s no confirmation on the release date yet. It went on floors in November 2013  and there have been 5 new release date announcements. The trailer was released in December last year. The audience is quickly losing interest and the product itself is looking stale. This one neither has the kind of promos like ‘Raees’ nor does it have a Shah Rukh Khan to survive such long delays.

  • @rajatkumarbhatt : Imitiaz Ali movies are not so commercial to earn 200 crs. Even 150 crs will be tough if wom is mixed. Why do u want to burden poor srk with unrealistic expectations and later get disappointed ??

  • @adj ,morons like u always forget tat kaabil was clashed with gareebs while chadrinath ki dulhaniya is solo release….

  • @hritik
Good that even you know Imtiyaz Ali movies are not commercial!!!!

But tomorrow if Rahnuma/The Ring doesnt do as expected you will call it as excuses!! And your usual dialogue-“SRK ki aukaat nai rahi!!!!” kinda stuffs, right?

BTW even I have no much expectations from The Ring or even Anad L Rai. SRK should do some interesting projects!!! Some good directors, some pan-India backdrop movies. Not these usual rom-com /masala stuffs!!!!

  • @hritik
How can you predict the word of mouth so quickly?? I remeber you had prognosticated 135 crore for Raees on day 1 in your review, it did 133 cr, accurate prediction!!! Bulls eye!!!!

Fan wars aside!! I hope you predict 180-200 crore for The Ring, gonna admire your erstwhile prediction though I have argued with you countless times!!! Must say, Slayed it!!!!

    @Salman Fan
Well dude, I am an SRK fan, but I have never wished TZH to clash. Not those fanatics who get Schadenfreude in other star’s debacles or purgatories in midst. Salman is numero-uno today and its a fact!!!! Doubting on him will be stupid!!! If some SRK fans are imbecile, doesnt mean that they represent the whole fanbase, does it??

  • I dont think tzh will cross 200 cr even with solo release. reason is that action movies are no longer popular and 2012 was different time, that time action genre was very popular but that is not the case now. Only tubelight has potential to cross 300 cr if word of mouth is excellent otherwise tubelight also might just manage to cross 250 cr.

My prediction for big event films
    1. Baahubali- 200 cr(hindi version only)
    2. Tubelight- 330 cr(if excellent)
    3. Srk-imtiaz movie- 120 cr
    4. Golmaal 3- 180 cr
    5. Dutt biopic- 255 cr (because of raju hirani)
    6. SLB film with deepika ranveer – 80 cr (because of shahid)
    7. Tiger zinda hai- 195 cr

  • @Rejan how is salman numero uno today when aamir goves back to back ATBB and ATHG? Aamir has given 3 ATHG in a raw and top 2 highest grossers belong to aamir at the movement be it domestic, overseas and worldwide. So how is salmam numero uno? Its aamir who is numero uno at the movement. Period. Be genuine and honest. Salman cant beat aamir. So at present aamir is numero uno and salman switches the position with aamir.

  • @Suraj : I am not a fanatic. I know SRK is still one of the top superstars of the country but currently he is behind Aamir and Salman. I cant tolerate if someone abuse Salman without a reason. I used to like SRK movies until Veer-Zaara after he did only 3 good movie which are CDI, RNBDJ and MNIK. It is because of his some of his fans people hate him.

  • @Rejan : Thank you !!!! That prediction was made after watching Raees considering clash and the time of release. I am not a punter. As I said Imtiaz’s movies are not full fledge commercial, SRK’s presence will help opened it big but expecting 180 crs is too much. 100+ crs in first 5 days will take it to 150-160 crs again it all boils down to content and how movie is connected to audience. All the best for Rehnuma !!!!!!!

  • Indicine why r u not admitting tat u have gone wrong in lbo predictions of kaabil and gareebs….if u will accept ur wrong prediction and give actual collections, then ..u will be loved ten times more by this site . mistakes r made by humans only ..honestly admit it .don’t remain arrogant .it is creating bad goodwill. For ur site .thanks…

  • 1. TZH – 350 (solo), 230 (Clash)
    2. Tubelight- 290
    3. Bahubali – 210 (Hindi)
    4. Padmavati-130
    5. Robot-150 (Hindi)
    6. Rehnuma- 185
    7. Badrinath- 110
    8. Judwaa- 90
    9. Badshaaho – 65
    10. Dutt Biopic – 170 (Christmas clash), 200 (solo not christmas release)
    11. Jagga Jasoos – 120

  • @Chamankapoor : Now you want Indicine to believe Rakesh (t@kla) uncle’s jadoo kalkulator and post the manipulated collections? Ek movie ka collection manipulate kiya toh kiya 3-3 movies ka collections manipulated. Even Jadoo will feel ashamed for passing on manipulation powers to t@kla & his son.
