IndicineFBO Update: Toilet, A Gentleman, Baadshaho

The industry has had very little to recover from multiple shocks when the biggest of them all – ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ – came and has almost gone away in less than a week. The film started at 15 crore on Friday, well below expectations from a Shah Rukh Khan starrer – but has already come down to less than 3 crore business, 5 days after its theatrical release.

Only ‘Mubarakan’ has survived in the last couple of months and it was probably the only ‘desi entertainer’ that we’ve had in recent times.

The outright rejection of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ has shaken the industry which now looks to one of the more promising films in recent times – Toilet Ek Prem Katha. If nothing else, it has Akshay Kumar who has been in top form recently. The perception around him has changed in the last two years, the multiplex audience now expect good films out of him. The trailer received a decent response too and the film has received political support.

The success of ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ is what the industry desperately needs to build hope for future films. But if the Akshay Kumar film fails, we’d have to wait for another two months before the next big film ‘Judwaa 2’ arrives in theatres.

In between we have films like ‘A Gentleman’ and ‘Baadshaho’. The Sidharth Malhotra starrer has action and youth appeal, which should help the film take a decent opening at multiplexes. The trailer of the film received a decent response, but it’s been downhill since. The songs have not worked, they haven’t really shown the action sequences either with the film looking more like a romantic comedy, a genre that the audience seem to dislike today.

‘Baadshaho’ is massy, it should open well at single-screens and mass centres – but it’s impossible in today’s times for a film to perform without the support of multiplexes. High costs and multiplex rejection were the reasons why Ajay Devgn’s last film, Shivaay, failed at the box office. It’s at multiplexes in those top 10-15 cities where ‘Baadshaho’ will face its biggest test.

The remaining films will be content and word-of-mouth dependent. ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ seem to be the most promising films, while ‘Qaidi Band’ has received the worst response amongst upcoming films, dead on arrival unless content surprises.

  • I disagree. Baadshaho trailer is very classy and impactful.. it surely has packed punch and will work on multiplexes as well. My prediction is 14 cr for baadshaho.

‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ film review
Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar are sincere in their roles but get bogged down with the propaganda message

Toilet Ek Prem Katha (61)tab_Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar in Toilet Ek Prem Katha)14
      1/2
In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Keshav (Akshay Kumar) isn’t expected to build a monument like the Taj Mahal that a Mughal emperor had built for his beloved wife, but a utility-friendly toilet for his bride (Bhumi Pednekar) who refuses to defecate in the open fields like the other women in his village.

Understandably, the college topper doesn’t want to be a part of the ‘lota party’ — the village sorority who do their morning business by trekking to the open fields with a lota (spherical water vessel) at the crack of dawn. It’s a merry group of women, if you discard their sordid outputs aside.

So, do Kumar — who’s all heart as Keshav — and his on-screen wife Jaya, played by Pednekar, come out smelling like roses in a film that begins by lauding the work of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clean India Mission?

      Not always.

The satire, which takes a nick at the unholy, but prevalent practice of open defecation in India, comes across as a star-driven propaganda vehicle.

The second half was decidedly a crash course on the existing government’s noble attempts at providing toilets across India and to highlight the narrow-mindedness among Indians who are shackled by cultural and religious beliefs.

But don’t give up on this film yet, because it has some golden moments scattered across it.

      GOOD FIGHT

The film starts on a promising note where we see a rakish Keshav, who runs a cycle store, being wed to a buffalo under the directions of his pious and conservative father. The animal will offset the misaligned stars, such is the belief.

Director Sree Narayan Singh has a superb knack of shrouding grim social scenarios and regressive traditions with wry humour.

Providing the verve to his vision is the urbane Kumar and Pednekar who do a splendid job of playing small-towners. It is Pednekar’s second film and she has an impressive command over her role as a feisty rebel.

Since it begins as a love story, a lot depends on their chemistry and they don’t disappoint. They are charming as a couple and their romantic escapades are endearing. It may be a bit disconcerting to see 49-year-old Kumar play a bachelor who is 36 and being smitten by a twenty-something woman, but since the actor is age-defying he seems to pull off the role. Even the bits where he follows her relentlessly is a questionable way of courtship, but Kumar manages to make it less creepy with his charismatic on-screen presence.

      CLOGGED MOMENTS

The first half is smooth, but it’s the second half that gets constipated. The premise which is intriguing and novel becomes repetitive and laboured. Some of the scenes in the second half seems contrived to make the current government shine and sparkle. Keshav and Jaya’s domestic problem snowballs into such a stinker of an issue that the entire state seems to be involved towards the end. There’s a good chance that you may have lost interest and your steam by all that drama surrounding a toilet-building battle.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, which clocks 175 minutes, would have benefited from tighter editing and fewer number of songs that showcase courtship, heartbreak and divorce.

Actors Sudhir Pandey (who plays the inflexible, traditionalist dad), Divyendu Sharma (Keshav’s jovial brother) and Anupam Kher (the naughty granddad with a penchant for watching raunchy Bollywood songs) complement the lead pair.

While the intention of this film is noble and should be lauded, the love story gets lost in the din of indoctrinating the glorious Indian government’s honourable campaign. Watch this if you are in the mood to witness earnest acting performances, but if you are looking for a propaganda-free film, then this is not it.

      Don’t miss it

  • You always have some irrelevant excuses for Ajay Devgn. God knows why you cant ever say something nice about him.
Tepk sure shot Super Hit am going for 14 cr opening day.

    • That’s not true. I have already said previously that Ajay Devgan is only actor in Indian cinema that is raising the bar. His magnum opus Taanaji will break all records thus become threat to even surpass Avator’s records.

  • Always against Ajay sir, nobody wants to know your personal hatred for him.
Fact is Baadshaho will win hearts and expect lots of seethis and claps for the action and dialogues.
Between i only appear here because of Akshay kumar Sir if not your biasness is so visible. Remember too those prediction are damn low Toilet; EPK will suprise everybody.

  • Toilet EPK Day1: 13.5cr
It had low buzz, but now the buzz is starting to pick up, will have a decent opening.

    A Gentleman Day1: 8.5cr
The movie has a decent buzz around it, there’s still 1 song left(Bandook Meri Laila), which can be a Chartbuster & increase the buzz.

    Baadshaho Day1: 12.5cr
All the promos & songs have been good, so a good Opening should be expected.

  • TEPK ka buzz sirf 5 kyu likh rahe ho indicine . I know buzz was low till last week but now TEPK is gaining buzz . During june
buzz was 8 . In end July it came down to 6 and now close to release the actual buzz is 7 . So please correct it .

  • I think Baadshaho will open little above what Indicine predicted… Multiplex business is very important now a days. one ticket in multiplex is equal to three tickets of single screen.. I can guarantee you that the footfall of shivaay was more than ADHM. But ADHM covered 25-30 cr more than shivaay..

  • TEPK can surprise but I think 100 cr is still a big task for a film with such an unusual topic. Let’s hope for the best, we really need a hit right now…

  • Indicine is creating negativity around Baadshaho .

Judwa2 will flop like Mubarakan, half gf, jhms, tubelight. @indicine and indeed it will another slap on ur face!!!!

  • Baadshaho has all ingredients of a massy film with a bit of everything ..so I think it has the potential to become a success and help the industry from this bad time.

  • 13.20 CR will be a very good start for TEPK . The makers released the trailer too early and the songs have not created a huge impact except Has Mat Pagli . TEPK has a massive chance to show positive growth on Saturday and Sunday . This film should be successful for Akshay . A Gentleman was looking good because the trailer received positive response . The songs have been poor . Baadshaho is looking good on paper . The teaser was brilliant and the trailer has received a terrific response on YouTube . The trailer is entertaining with kickass dialogues and superb action sequences . Baadshaho is looking entertaining which was not the case with Tubelight and JHMS . Shubh Mangal Savdhaan is looking nice . But the problem is it will be badly affected as it will clash with Baadshaho . BKB is looking very good . It should be successful but it has only 1 week before A Gentleman . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The only movies which can beat “Raees” are tzh and padmavati(it has to be exceptional).. and if these fail, srk has hgoty even though with low collections.. (this is regarding Bollywood movies and not other industries hence not including bahubali 2)

  • Toilet is exactly where Joker Boys career was heading until this greedy canadian gobbar started doing fake patriotic themed movies…!

  • When audiences ultimately reject this crapfest all exhibitors will look for the nearest to flush their prints of this bakwaas film…

  • After this film flops a toilet will be the only place our Greedy Gobbarrs shameless fans will hide their dirty faces including that loser Fanny Alcoholic…!

  • Dont be surprised to discover that Toilet infact turns out to be a documentary about Joker Boys biggest loser fan aka the Toilet dweller Fanny Alcoholic

  • Junooni Song Qaidi Band featuring Arijit and yashita sharma is just amazing, u have to repost this song @indicine..
